Academic Integrity and PlagiarismThe principles of academic integrity encompass simple standards of honesty and truth.Each member of the College community has a responsibility to uphold standards and totake action when others violate them. Faculty members have an obligation to educatestudents about the standards of academic integrity and to report violations of thesestandards. All students, both online and onsite, are responsible for knowing what thestandards are and for adhering to them. Students also should bring any violations of whichthey are aware to the attention of their instructors. Any breach of academic integrity is aserious offense that may result in disciplinary consequences.

Computation of Grade Point Average (GPA): To compute the GPA for the term, eachletter grade is converted to the grade point equivalent listed above. Then, that grade pointis multiplied by the number of credits designated for the course. This procedure is followedfor each course. Next, the number of grade point equivalents for all courses is added. Thattotal is then divided by the total number of credits attempted for the term. The result isthe term GPA.

Incomplete Grade: Documented inability to complete coursework due to circumstancesbeyond the student’s control (such as severe illness) may, at the discretion of theinstructor, result in a grade of I. All outstanding work must be completed within two weeksafter the end of the course. If all work is not completed by that time, the incomplete gradebecomes an F. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor to make thenecessary arrangements for makeup work.

Course Withdrawal: Students who wish to drop a course must do so in writing and musthave the approval of the Academic Advisement Department. Courses dropped during theadd/drop period (first week for sevenweek courses and first two weeks for all othercourses) do not appear on the student’s transcript. Withdrawal from a sevenweek coursebetween weeks two and four will result in a grade of WP or WF, withdrawal from a 12weekcourse between weeks three and nine will result in a grade of WP or WF, and withdrawalfrom a 14 or 15week course between weeks three and 12 will result in a grade of WP orWF, which indicates whether the student was passing or failing the course at the time ofwithdrawal. A grade of W will be assigned to students who enrolled in but did notparticipate in a course. Students who do not officially withdraw from a course will receive aletter grade that reflects their achievement.

Students enrolled in the Practical Nurse program are permitted to withdraw from one NURcourse during the length of their Practical Nurse program; students enrolled in the SurgicalTechnology program are permitted to withdraw from one SUR course during the length of

their Surgical Technology program. Students enrolled in these programs should refer totheir respective Student Handbook Supplements for additional information.

Repeated Course: When a course is successfully repeated, the original failure remains onthe transcript but is not included in calculating the cumulative GPA. A single course can betaken a maximum of three times, including two repeats. With the exception of certaincourses offered in the School of Health Studies, students may only repeat courses in whichthe student has earned a grade of F and may not repeat courses for which credit alreadyhas been earned (grade of D or better), either at Berkeley College or in transfer fromanother college.

Where a course is no longer offered, the Chair of the Academic Department in which thecourse is housed, in consultation with the Dean of the School, shall designate anappropriate replacement course. When a course has been repeated, both the original andsubsequent courses are included on the permanent record, but the credit is counted onlyonce.

Students in School of Health Studies programs should consult their individual programhandbooks for specific guidelines for repeating a course.

Change of Major: All courses remain on the transcript and continue to be included in thecumulative GPA when students change their major.

Course Syllabus: Students receive a syllabus for each course during the first week of theterm. The syllabus contains the instructor's name and office hours, a general description ofthe course and its contents, a statement of learning outcomes, descriptions of theinstructor's attendance and grading policies, the academic integrity policy, and a list ofmajor assignments.

General Academic PoliciesMatriculation Status: A matriculated student is one who is officially enrolled in acertificate or degree program. Students who wish to take only a single course or acombination of courses are welcome as nonmatriculated students.

Transfer to Bachelor's Degree: Students in an Associate's degree program mustgraduate before moving to a Bachelor's degree program. After discussion with an AcademicAdvisor, dual enrollment may be approved for the last term of the Associate's program.

Justice Studies Criminal Justice Requirements: New, firsttime students in theJustice Studies Criminal Justice major are enrolled in the Associate in Applied Science(A.A.S.) degree program. Upon completion of the Associate’s degree, students transitioninto the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree program. After discussion with an AcademicAdvisor, enrollment in both degrees may be approved for the last term of the Associate'sprogram.

College Skills (Developmental Education) Courses: All new, matriculated, degreeseeking students, including transfer students and those entering Berkeley College for thefirst time, are assessed to determine competency levels in reading, writing, andmathematics. When this assessment indicates a need, students are scheduled for one ormore of the following skills courses designed to promote their successful transition tocollege life: Foundations of Critical Reading, Foundations of Critical Writing, andTransitional Math.

All College Skills courses must be successfully completed by the end of a student’s thirdquarter or second semester. Students enrolled in College Skills courses must receive agrade of C or better in the course in order to complete their programs and graduate fromthe College. College Skills courses are not counted toward graduation requirements. Thesecourses are included in the determination of the full or parttime enrollment status for aterm, and financial aid disbursements are made based on this status. Under certaincircumstances the need to take College Skills courses may lengthen the time required tocomplete the student’s program, thereby resulting in increased costs to a student.

Attendance: Students are expected to attend and participate in all their coursesthroughout each term. Those who fail to do so may be administratively withdrawn fromindividual courses or the College. Online students in 15week courses have one week tocomplete their work. A student is considered absent if he or she does not submit work for afull week. It generally is encouraged that logins to each online course will occur onseparate days throughout the week rather than on a single day. It is expected thatstudents will spend significant time in each online course on substantive academicactivities, including posting to discussion forums, reviewing digital content, uploadingassignments, and taking assessments.

Sevenweek online courses: Typically students in an accelerated sevenweek online coursewill need to log in at least three separate times during each week to be successful. Specificguidelines for each course are available through the course syllabi, but it generally isexpected that these logins will occur on separate days throughout the week rather thanon a single day, and that students will spend significant time in the online course onsubstantive academic activities, including posting to discussion forums, reviewing digitalcontent, uploading assignments, and taking assessments.

Students enrolled in the LPN to B.S.N., Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician,Practical Nurse, Surgical Processing Technician, and Surgical Technology programsshould refer to their respective Student Handbook Supplements for programspecific attendance requirements.

Faculty members will include their coursespecific rules about absences, grading, andmakeup work in each course syllabus. Each instructor may excuse absences for good



















cause and determine to what extent absences will affect grading. Certain absences will beexcused automatically as required by law (such as military students called to active duty).

If illness, accident, or similar circumstances require absence for three or more consecutivedays, students must notify the Academic Advisement Department and the faculty memberto discuss their status in their class(es).

Students who are withdrawn for a failure to attend and participate will receive a grade ofWP or WF for the course(s), depending on whether the student was passing or failing atthe time of withdrawal. This may affect the student's financial aid eligibility.

Academic Time Commitment: Coursework performed outside of the classroom (such asreading, studying, writing papers, doing projects, or receiving tutoring) is critical toacademic success. While the time requirements for individual students may varysomewhat, a general rule of thumb is that students should spend about two hours outsidethe classroom for every hour required in it. Grade Appeal: A student wishing to appeal a course grade must submit a completedgrade appeal form to the faculty member by the end of the first week of the academicterm following posting of the disputed grade. The faculty member will respond to thestudent’s appeal in writing as soon as practical. All responses should be entered into thegrade appeal form.

Should the student disagree with the faculty member’s decision, then no later than twoweeks after receiving the faculty member’s decision, the student may appeal that decisionto the Department Chair. The Chair will respond to the student’s appeal as soon aspractical and shall have the authority to modify the grade as the Chair may deemappropriate. Should the student disagree with the Chair’s decision, then – and only then –no later than two weeks after receiving the Chair’s decision, the student may submit a finalappeal to the Dean of the School. The Dean will respond to the student’s appeal as soon aspractical and shall have the authority to modify the grade as the Dean may deemappropriate. The Dean’s decision shall be final.

When submitting an appeal to either the Department Chair or the Dean of the School, thestudent should continue to use and submit the original appeal form, containing theresponse received from the faculty member and, if submitting to the Dean, the responsereceived from the Department Chair. The student should indicate on the form why thestudent believes the faculty member’s decision was in error.

College Closing: The College seldom closes due to inclement weather. In cases ofextreme weather or emergencies, however, the closing of each College campus will bemade available over the Internet at closings.BerkeleyCollege.edu and by phone as anoption on the automated phone menu at each campus.

Closings only apply to onsite students. Work will continue in the online platform for bothonline and many onsite students. Onsite students will be contacted by their instructorsregarding the week’s requirements.

Schedules for delayed openings due to inclement weather are posted on Blackboard and atclosings.BerkeleyCollege.edu.

Add/Drop Policy: Students enrolled in nonclinical 15 or 12week courses may add acourse or courses to their schedules prior to the start of the second week of the term.Clinical and accelerated courses cannot be added after the start of the term. 15 or 12week courses dropped during the first two weeks of classes do not appear on the student’stranscript. Accelerated courses dropped during the first week of classes do not appear onthe student’s transcript. Students who drop a course or courses (including CollegeSkills courses) and reduce their total term credit hours to fewer than 12 prior to theenrollment status determination should notify the Financial Aid Department. This actionmay adversely affect eligibility for financial aid.

SEVENWEEK SESSIONS: Students taking courses in both session A and session B mustregister for both by the end of the Add/Drop Period applicable to the correspondingsemester. Any credits added, on rare exception as a result of special academic approval,after that date will not count toward financial aid eligibility. Students taking session Bwithout first having taken Session A may register for session B and add credits up to week10 of the corresponding semester.

Canceled Classes: The College reserves the right to cancel courses or scheduled sectionsof courses at its discretion.

Leaves of Absence: A oneterm academic leave of absence (LOA) may be granted at thediscretion of the Academic Advisement Department for students in a degree program(Bachelor's and Associate's). Subject to the terms of the Tuition Freeze Policy, studentswho take a leave of absence will be charged the prevailing rate of tuition and residencecharges at the time of their return. A leave of absence may be requested only at the end ofa term for the subsequent term.

Students enrolled in clinical programs are subject to medical and criminal backgroundclearance prior to returning from their LOA. Students are responsible for any fees incurredin obtaining these medical and criminal background clearances.

Withdrawing from College: Any student who wishes to withdraw from the Collegeshould contact the student’s Academic Advisor immediately and complete the Collegewithdrawal eform, which can be found on Blackboard.

SevenWeek Sessions “Intent to Return”: A student registered for both sessions Aand B who chooses to withdraw from session A but intends to return for session B shouldsubmit an Intent to Return form to the Academic Advisement department. See the Returnof Federal Funds section for more details.

Credits per Semester: Fulltime students typically take a course load of 15 semestercredits. Students on probation or academic plan will be advised to take a course load of 12semester credits or less until they are restored to good academic standing. In some cases,students taking a reduced load may require longer to complete their academic programs,leading to significant additional charges.

Students enrolled in some School of Health Studies programs will be scheduled accordingto programmatic requirements. Students should refer to their respective Student HandbookSupplements for programspecific requirements, where available.

Additional Credits per Term: A per credit tuition rate is charged for each credit in excessof 16 quarter or 15 semester credits. Students enrolled in the Surgical Technology andMedical Insurance, Billing, and Coding programs will have this fee waived. Students whowish to enroll in more than this maximum number of credits must have permission from anAcademic Advisor. Consideration will be offered to students who have demonstratedacademic success. Students may not enroll in more than 18 semester or 20 quarter creditsin any one term.

Online: An introductory online course to familiarize the student with online learning is aprerequisite to enrolling for online courses. Additional information is available in theAcademic Advisement department.

Please Note: Berkeley College reserves the right to revise course offerings, cancelscheduled courses, or make any other curriculum changes that the College, in its solediscretion, deems appropriate. The College may limit an individual student’s course load asneeded to facilitate the student’s academic success. Such changes may affect theestimated duration and cost of the student’s program. GraduationRequirements: To qualify for graduation, students must complete the prescribed courseof study with a minimum average of 2.00 (C), discharge all financial obligations to theCollege, and meet the credithour requirements for their major.

Requirements for the LPN to B.S.N., Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician,Practical Nurse, Surgical Processing Technician, and Surgical Technology programsmay differ. Students should refer to their respective Student Handbook Supplements forprogramspecific graduation policies.

Each spring the College conducts both an inperson Commencement ceremony and aseparate online Virtual Commencement ceremony. Online and international students areautomatically invited to the Virtual Commencement; onsite students may request toparticipate. Both ceremonies will include special addresses by the Berkeley CollegePresident and other noteworthy speakers. Students must be within six semester or ninequarter credits of completing all requirements by the end of the winter term to beconsidered for participation in spring Commencement exercises.

Honors: Students in degree programs who achieve an overall 3.50 average will begraduated Cum Laude; students who achieve an overall 3.70 average will be graduatedMagna Cum Laude; and students who achieve an overall 4.00 average will be graduatedSumma Cum Laude.

Honors for Certificate Recipients: Students in certificate programs who achieve anoverall average of 3.50 – 3.79 will be graduated with Honors; students who achieve anoverall average of 3.80 – 4.00 will be graduated with High Honors.

Graduation Pictures: Graduates may have formal pictures taken during GraduateSalutes, celebratory events held at each College campus, prior to the annualcommencement ceremony. Arrangements may be made through the Student Developmentand Campus Life Department.

Honors ProgramThe Berkeley College Honors Program is a selective and voluntary 9 or 18credit academicprogram designed to educate, recognize, and retain our highlymotivated, highachievingassociate and bachelor degreeseeking students. The mission of the Honors Program is toprovide a rigorous educational experience that focuses on themebased seminars,community service engagement, and the development of student scholarship. Students aretaught and mentored by Honors faculty, guest lecturers, writing consultants and librarians.Honors seminars are held at select New York, New Jersey campuses, and online. Eachaccepted Honors student is assigned to a particular location and learning community.Learning communities meet approximately once a week. Students must register for Honorsseminars through their academic advisor.

The Honors Program is open to incoming freshman students enrolled in one of BerkeleyCollege’s associate or bachelor degree programs AND continuing/ transfer studentsenrolled in a bachelor degree program. Students who meet the seminar, service, andscholarship requirements will receive the Honors Scholar distinction on their BerkeleyCollege transcripts and diplomas. The distinction will be noted next to each student’s namein the Commencement booklets. Students will also receive an Honors Scholar cord to beworn over their gowns at Commencement.

Berkeley College continuing/transfer students seeking a Bachelor's degree with acumulative 3.50 grade point average (GPA) or higher, and a minimum of 18 semestercredits, but no more than 80 semester credits by the next fall term, are eligible to applyfor admission into the next honors continuing/transfer learning community.Continuing/Transfer Honors students starting the program in the fall semester of 2017 willcomplete one honors seminar in each of the fall, winter, and spring semestersconsecutively, culminating in a final Honors Thesis seminar in the spring 2018 semester.Transfer students with an incoming cumulative 3.50 GPA or higher and a minimum of 18semester credits with special approval from the Honors Program Director are eligible toapply for admission into the next honors continuing/transfer learning community.

Incoming freshmen students who are seeking both Associate’s or Bachelor’s degrees with ahigh school GPA of 3.00 or higher, or have special approval from the Honors ProgramDirector, are eligible to apply for the honors freshmen cohort.

Associate’s degreeseeking Freshmen Honors students starting the program in the fallsemester of 2017 complete one freshmen honors seminar in each of the fall, winter, andspring semesters consecutively.

Bachelor’s degreeseeking Freshmen Honors students starting the program in the fallsemester of 2017 complete one freshmen honors seminar in each of the fall, winter, andspring semesters consecutively, positioning them to join the next Continuing/TransferHonors Program in the fall semester of 2018.

Eligible students for both the freshmen and continuing/transfer honors learningcommunities are invited to download an application via the Honors Program page on theBerkeley College website. The application deadline for each fall term is June 1 for theFreshmen Honors Program and July 1 for Continuing/Transfer Honors Program. The HonorsAdmissions Committee will review each application and select the next learning communityof honors students for the fall term. Students admitted into the program will receive awritten response from the Director within one month of the application deadline.

Students in the Honors Program must sign an Honors Program Acknowledgment with theunderstanding that they must maintain a cumulative 3.00 Berkeley College GPA to remainin the program. Credits earned in the Honors Program will contribute toward the fulfillmentof the liberal arts requirement.

Project SuccessThe Project Success program is mandatory for students returning to Berkeley who have notachieved satisfactory academic progress. The program requires active participation, weeklydiscussions, and activities that focus on effective study and learning skills and strategies.Students who do not post to the weekly discussions may be withdrawn from the College.

Satisfactory Academic ProgressINTRODUCTION

Qualitative Assessments: Every matriculated student is required to maintain a minimumgrade point average (GPA), which varies based on the number of credits the student hasalready attempted. Compliance with this qualitative requirement is measured every term.Continued failure to meet this standard after a warning (automatic) or probationary (whenpermitted) period, or failing to fulfill the requirements of a prescribed academic plan, willlead to dismissal from the College. Probation may be granted and academic plans may beprescribed at the sole discretion of the College, only after a successful appeal by thestudent. Some programs have more restrictive requirements using different thresholds forpassing grades. The details can be viewed, by program, in the Catalog. All course gradesbelow the minimum passing standard for that course will be treated as failures incalculating the student’s GPA for qualitative assessment. Students will not be allowed tochange programs without approval from the Academic Advisement Department.

Quantitative Assessments: Students are also required to pass a minimum percentage ofthe credits they attempt in order to remain eligible for enrollment. Quantitative progressassessments are subject to those same warning, probation, and academic plan proceduresevery term. Students in Baccalaureate programs must have a GPA of at least 2.00 at the end of theirsecond academic year.

In addition to the qualitative standards set forth above, students must meet quantitativestandards of progress in order to remain eligible for enrollment.

Application of the 150 Percent Rule

The College includes developmental and test credits as “credits attempted” in applying the150 percent metric. For students who have changed programs and/or have returned tocomplete additional degrees, only the attempted credits applicable to their currentprograms will be counted in the 150 percent calculation. Students will not be allowed tochange programs without approval from the Academic Advisement Department.

Students for whom it is no longer possible to comply with the 150 percent rule beforeprogram completion will be declared ineligible to participate in Title IV or TAG programs. Atthe discretion of the Provost’s Office, these students may be dismissed from the College.Such decisions are not appealable.

Progress Assessments

To help students avoid reaching the 150 percent point, the College tests student progressevery term, based on attempted vs. earned benchmarks. The following standards areapplied:

For this purpose, attempted credits include developmental courses, test credits, and allcredits accepted in transfer. In addition, all credits for which a letter grade was received,including F, WP, and WF (withdrawn after tuition assessment), are counted as attemptedcredits. Credits earned include all coursework that was successfully completed (studentreceived a passing grade). The quarter policy applies to students enrolled in 12weekquarters. The semester policy applies to students enrolled in 15week semesters.

WARNINGS AND APPEALS

Warning of Failure to Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Requirements

Students who, for the first time, fail to meet standards will automatically be placed onWarning status for the following term. Students on Warning status may continue to beenrolled and, if applicable, maintain their eligibility for financial aid. Students who meet theSAP standards during the Warning (subsequent) term will be restored to good standing.

Appeals for Probation

Students who fail to meet standards during the Warning term may appeal to be placed onProbation status for the subsequent term. Failure to submit an appeal if required will resultin withdrawal from the College. Students on probation may continue to be enrolled and, ifapplicable, maintain their eligibility for financial aid. Students who have met the SAPstandards by the end of the probationary term will be restored to good standing.

Appeals for Academic Plans

Students who fail to meet the SAP standards by the end of a probation term may appealagain to be given academic plans customized for their needs. Failure to submit an appeal ifrequired will result in withdrawal from the College. Academic plans, to which students mustagree, are designed to allow students to achieve compliance with SAP requirements withina reasonable period of time. Students on academic plans may continue to be enrolled and,if applicable, maintain their eligibility for financial aid programs as long as they satisfy theterms and conditions of their plans.

Academic Advisement

The College will promptly contact students placed on Warning, Probation, or Academic Planstatus to offer additional academic support services.

Appeal Procedures

Students dismissed for failure to meet qualitative standards or prescribed quantitativebenchmarks may appeal those dismissals by timely submission of online eForms.Dismissals for failure to satisfy the 150 percent rule are not appealable.

Students will be notified when their appeals have been submitted successfully. The appealswill be reviewed, as needed, by the Satisfactory Academic Process (SAP) ReviewCommittee, which is comprised of representatives appointed by the Provost’s Office.Decisions made by the SAP Review Committee will be based on several criteria, includingany special circumstances that contributed to the failure to satisfy SAP requirements andmaterial changes in such circumstances. Students who successfully appeal may be restoredto good academic standing by meeting the SAP standards in the subsequent term orfollowing their prescribed academic plans. Students whose appeals are granted will receiveinstructions from the Academic Advisement Department on how to proceed. Approvedappeals will be honored for two terms, the term for which they are appealing and thesubsequent term.

Provisional Appeals

Students on Warning or Probation status who are not succeeding in their studies areencouraged to submit provisional appeals even before the end of the term. Provisionalappeals by students who go on to meet SAP standards in that term will be deemedwithdrawn.




Denial of an Appeal

If a failing student’s appeal is denied, the student will be notified and dismissed from theCollege.

Reinstatement after Dismissal or Loss of Eligibility for Financial Aid Due to Failureto Meet SAP Standards

The College will consider exceptional appeals for reinstatement of students who have notbeen enrolled for a minimum of one term. Students dismissed or declared ineligible forfinancial aid due to their failure to meet SAP standards may later experience positivechanges in their personal circumstances that improve their chances for future academicsuccess. Reinstatement of such students will be at the nonappealable discretion of theProvost’s Office and will be conditioned upon adherence to prescribed academic plans. Onlythose whose student accounts are current will be considered for reinstatement.

SAP and Transfer Credits

In measuring compliance with SAP standards, transfer credits will be considered as creditsattempted and earned. Therefore, since transfer credits are ungraded but are neverthelesscounted in calculating SAP requirements, transfer students may be required to earn atleast a 2.00 GPA in their first term (and all subsequent terms) at Berkeley in order toremain in good standing.

SAP and Repeated Courses

When a course is successfully repeated, the original failure(s) is not included in calculatingthe cumulative GPA or the qualitative requirements. For the quantitative SAP measure,however, each failed attempt will be included in the “courses attempted” portion of theevaluation.

SAP and Incomplete Grades

Effective January 1, 2012, initial calculations of SAP will treat incomplete grades as Fgrades until such incompletes are replaced with passing letter grades. After the first weekof the following term, all unresolved incomplete grades will convert to F grades and will betreated as such in all SAP evaluations. To accommodate grade changes, final SAPcalculations are made after all grades have been recorded.

SAP and Course Withdrawal

Students who drop courses will receive letter grades of either WP (withdrawnpassing) orWF (withdrawnfailing). These grades will not be considered in the application of qualitativerequirements, but will be counted as credits attempted for quantitative purposes.

SAP and Developmental Coursework

Effective January 1, 2012, even though they are not applied toward the number of creditsrequired to complete a program of study, developmental credits will be included in bothqualitative and quantitative SAP measurements.

SAP and NonMatriculated Students

Students enrolled as nonmatriculated students will not be held to the SAP standards.However, if nonmatriculated students matriculate, then all coursework will be included inSAP calculations.

Campus SecurityThe Public Safety Department is responsible for providing information with respect tosafety and security issues. Each year, in accordance with federal regulations, the Collegedistributes a Campus Crime Report for each campus. Copyright PolicyOriginal "works of expression," such as writings, graphics, photographs, and music, may beprotected from unauthorized use by the federal copyright laws. Copyright laws governwhether — and to what extent — you are permitted to copy, upload, download, transmit,or distribute such works, or to create new works derived from them without first receivingpermission from the holder of the copyright (often the author or publisher of the original).The copyright laws are complex. Under some circumstances, copying information fromwebsites, downloading music or video from or uploading it to a peertopeer application, oreven mere photocopying, faxing, or cutting and pasting substantial portions of copyrightedmaterials may constitute infringement. The Berkeley College community is expresslyprohibited from using the Berkeley College network or computing resources to access peertopeer sites that permit unauthorized copying of copyrighted music, photographs, video,or other legally protected materials. Such activities will be treated as violations of theStudent Electronic Information Policy. Certain limited copying of published materialswithout permission may be allowed under the "Fair Use" doctrine.

Berkeley students and associates are required to comply with the copyright laws. Immunization RequirementNew York and New Jersey State laws require that all students enrolled in degree programswho were born on or after January 1, 1957 (except those who have been determined to beexempt from such requirements for appropriately documented medical or religiousreasons) be immunized against measles, mumps, and rubella. New Jersey laws alsorequire any new student who enrolls at Berkeley for the first time on or after January 1,2008 for a degree program consisting of 12 or more credits (and who is not otherwiseexempt) to show appropriate proof of immunization or actual immunity from Hepatitis B.

Every student enrolled in a degree program must submit a certificate of immunizationsigned by a physician or healthcare provider to the Registrar prior to registering forclasses. The certificate must document the student’s receipt of two live doses of measlesvaccine and one live dose each of mumps and rubella vaccine. In addition, studentsattending Berkeley’s New Jersey locations must document their receipt of three doses ofHepatitis B vaccine administered within prescribed time frames. At least two doses must bereceived prior to registration for classes. In the discretion of the Registrar, serological proofof immunity or other proof such as a Student Health Record from a previously attendedschool or military records properly documenting the required immunization history may beaccepted as adequate proof of such immunization.

Berkeley College also complies with regulations of the States of New Jersey and New Yorkregarding the distribution of information about meningitis and vaccination. All Berkeleystudents enrolled in degree programs who do not submit other proof of immunizationagainst meningitis must acknowledge in writing that they have received the requiredinformation and either have been immunized or have elected to forego immunization.Students seeking to reside in student housing facilities must submit proof of actualimmunization against meningitis before keys will be issued.

Students who fail to satisfy the College's immunization requirements will not be permittedto register for classes. For more information concerning immunization requirements, pleasecontact the Registrar.

Other GrievancesGrade Appeals and Academic Grievances

Grade appeals and other grievances relating to academic matters other than academic andfinancial aid probation should be promptly presented to the appropriate faculty member,and then, if necessary, the Department Chair, and finally, the Dean of the School. In allacademic matters, including grade appeals, the decision of the Dean of the School isfinal. The grade appeal form and instructions are available in the General AcademicPolicies section.

Appeal procedures for academic and financial aid probation and dismissal due tounsatisfactory academic progress are described under the Satisfactory Academic Progresssection.

Other NonAcademic Grievances

Grievances relating to (a) a suspension or dismissal for nonacademic reasons other thanconduct covered by the Equal Opportunity Policy or (b) any matter not otherwise providedfor in these policies and procedures must be presented in writing to the Campus OperatingOfficer within 10 business days. The Campus Operating Officer shall review thecircumstances and action taken and may modify such action only where, in the judgmentof the Campus Operating Officer, a failure to do so would result in a manifest injustice. Insuch matters, the decision of the Campus Operating Officer shall be final.

Unavailability of DecisionMaker and Potential Conflicts ofInterest

Whenever, in the sole discretion of the College, the official designated by these proceduresas a decisionmaker shall be unavailable or perceived by the College to have a potentialconflict of interest that may unduly influence the investigation or determination of an EqualOpportunity complaint, Academic Grievance or NonAcademic Grievance, the College maydesignate a substitute decisionmaker.

Student Records and InformationThe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law governing howstudent academic, financial, disciplinary, and immunization records, among others("Education Records"), and information derived from them, are managed. EducationRecords protected by FERPA refer to any records maintained by Berkeley College that aredirectly related to a student, with certain exceptions. Generally, FERPA prohibitseducational institutions from disclosing private student information and records (such asgrades, disciplinary records, and Social Security numbers) without prior consent from thestudent. It also gives students the right to review many of their Education Records andcorrect errors.

FERPA permits institutions to disclose some Education Records under specific conditions.For example, certain student information may be disclosed in emergencies involvingthreats to the health or safety of the student or the College community, or when a studentis injured or missing for a defined period of time without explanation (all students arerequired to furnish emergency contact information for this purpose). Institutions are alsopermitted to designate less private categories of "Directory Information" that may bedisclosed without a student’s consent, unless the student has specifically instructed theRegistrar Department in writing not to share such information. At Berkeley, DirectoryInformation includes a student’s name, address, telephone number, email address,student number, date and place of birth, major field(s) of study, participation in officiallyrecognized activities and sports, dates of attendance, degrees, honors and awardsreceived, most recent previous school attended, and likeness (photograph, video, or otherform).

WeaponsFor the safety of the College community, Berkeley College strictly prohibits the possessionor use of any kind of weapon (including the use of an object or substance as a weapon) onCollege property or at events and activities sponsored by the College, regardless ofwhether such possession or use violates public law.

Upon written request, the Assistant Vice President of Public Safety & EmergencyManagement, or another officer of the College to whom the President of the College maydelegate such authority (the “Authorizing Official”), shall be authorized to grant permissionfor a current federal, state, or local law enforcement officer or other person who may berequired by law to carry a weapon; member of the armed forces; or campus public safetyofficer to carry firearms or other weapons on campus or at Collegesponsored events andactivities, only to the extent required by law or official rules of conduct applicable to suchperson and where, in the sole discretion of the College, the granting of such request wouldneither pose an undue danger to the Berkeley College community, nor subject the Collegeto unacceptable legal or financial risk. Any such request may be granted only on thelimited terms described in the Weapons Policy.

Registration

To register for an upcoming semester, students are required to select courses with anAcademic Advisor. All students must receive financial aid clearance each semester fromboth the Financial Aid and Student Accounts Departments. Once classes begin, academicadvisors monitor students' progress to encourage the achievement of their educationalgoals.

All students enrolled in an online degree program who have not selected their courseschedules by Friday of week six for the subsequent term will be assessed a $100 latescheduling fee.

Students enrolled in the Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician, Practical Nurse,Surgical Processing Technician, and Surgical Technology programs have their schedulescreated for them and must print them directly from Blackboard.

Academic Advisement

Berkeley College recognizes academic advising to be an integral component of theeducational experience of its undergraduate students. Academic advising is a collaborativerelationship for which academic advisors and students share responsibility and throughwhich students create sound educational plans consistent with their academic, career, andpersonal goals.

In keeping with Berkeley College's mission, the Academic Advisement Department iscommitted to providing students with a comprehensive and supportive educationalexperience.

During the transition to a semester calendar in 2016, it is more important than ever forstudents to meet regularly with an academic advisor, minimally once per term, to registerfor courses and develop an individualized academic transition plan that will help studentsstay on track for graduation. The Academic Advisement Department will assist studentswith making connections to support services that will enhance the learning experience.Academic Advisement reserves the right to adjust students' schedules based on theirdegree requirements.

Students experiencing academic difficulties should contact the Academic AdvisementDepartment as soon as possible.

In an effort to facilitate academic success, Berkeley College has implemented an earlywarning, midterm progress report, and late warning monitoring system designed toidentify students experiencing academic difficulties. Those students then are referred tothe Academic Advisement Department for appropriate intervention, which may includecounseling, tutoring, and other referrals.

Online programs are subject to regulation by New Jersey and/or New York, as well as bythe state of each student's residence. It is, therefore, essential that online studentsintending to change their state of residence notify their academic advisor as soon aspossible in advance, since such change may affect their eligibility to remain enrolled in theCollege.

College Transfer Academic Advisement

The Academic Advisement Department provides transfer students with academiccounseling that includes a review of the courses that have been accepted and degreerequirements that are outstanding. Students are also provided with an overview of servicesoffered by the Academic Advisement Department to help make sure the transferexperience is smooth and seamless.

Berkeley ID Card

Students receive a Berkeley ID Card during their first semester at Berkeley College. TheBerkeley ID Card acts as an identification card. Students are required to carry the card atall times while on campus and to display it if requested to do so by a member of theCollege faculty or staff. In addition to being used for security purposes, the Berkeley IDCard has financial and administrative uses. It can be used instead of other paymentoptions in the Berkeley Store. Students may add funds to their cards either on campus atthe Student Accounts Department or through Blackboard in the Online Card Office.Students may monitor the transaction activity on their card any time they are logged intothe Blackboard website. The cost to replace lost cards is $10.

Berkeley Refund Disbursement Card

The Berkeley Refund Disbursement Card is the official refund card for Berkeley Collegestudents. Upon enrollment, all students with a valid United States address are mailed anactivation code to be used to ‘activate’ their card and select their preferred refund method.A student may choose either of two refund options: a deposit made either onto theBerkeley Refund Disbursement Card itself or into the student’s own bank account. There isno charge to students for either option. Questions about the Berkeley RefundDisbursement Card may be directed to the Student Accounts Department.

Blackboard

Blackboard is Berkeley’s student portal. Through Blackboard, students have access to theircourses, email, Student SelfService, campus announcements, key policies and reports,and Berkeley Card account information. In addition, students can access the online libraryand information from different departments of the College.

Student SelfService allows students to access their class schedules, view Berkeley'sschedule of classes and Catalog, grades, and unofficial transcripts. Students can updatepersonal information, make payments, apply for financial aid, and view their financial aidawards. eForms for all departments can be accessed from Blackboard, as well.

Blackboard can be accessed at my.BerkeleyCollege.edu.

Pharos Uniprint/Print Conservation Program

Students may print in classrooms, libraries, and other laboratory areas. The Berkeley Cardentitles students to a print quota each semester. Once the quota has been used, studentsmay replenish their account. Remaining print quotas cannot be carried over to thefollowing semester. College Libraries are available at all campuses. They support the academic programs of theCollege and provide for the general, intellectual, and cultural enrichment of the Berkeleycommunity.

The Berkeley library collection is a combination of physical and virtual resources thatencompasses 114,000 print and media titles, 125,000 electronic book titles, 43,000streaming video programs, and 78 research databases. Physical collections are held locallyby campus and shared collectively throughout the College by way of a webbased librarymanagement system.

The library’s website,BerkeleyCollege.edu/academics_bc/library/library_home_page.htm, is thegateway for onsite and remote access to resources, services, research, and help options.Print, electronic, ondemand video, and full text databases enhance coursework andsupport research within the majors, specializations, elective, and interdisciplinary topics ofeach program of study.

The libraries are open days, evenings, and weekends when classes are in session.Academic librarians are available in person, by telephone, email, or live chat service toassist with navigating the electronic resources and locating materials within the BerkeleyCollege Collections or through a worldwide resourcesharing network.

The ability to find, interpret, and use many types of information is a valuable set of skillsfor academic and professional success. Throughout the academic experience there aremany opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of the value of information literacy.

The Berkeley College Online® Library meets the needs of online students with a full arrayof webbased resources that includes electronic journals, ebooks, reference tools,assignment support, and Live Chat assistance. Academic librarians are frequentparticipants in the online class environment. The online library is a source of reliableinformation that is always available*.

* The Berkeley College Online Library is available from a PC, Mac, tablet, or smartphone 24 hours a day,seven days a week, from any location where Internet access is available and permitted by law.

Center for Academic Success (formerly the ASC)

The Center for Academic Success is dedicated to empowering students throughout theiracademic careers at Berkeley College and encouraging their development as successfulindependent learners. Staff are available days, evenings, and weekends to support studentachievement. Students may access an array of resources to support all academic courses.

Onsite Services

The Center for Academic Success provides a productive learning environment at everycampus for students to work and share ideas. Students can book oneonone or grouptutoring appointments with peer and professional tutors to dialogue about their progress intheir course and work toward their academic goals. Sessions are available for all courses atBerkeley College, as well as in computer skills. Additionally, students can collaborate withtheir peers in tutorled study groups in accounting, math, and other subjects. Groups mayreview coursework, study for assessments, or share strategies for success in the course.

The Speakeasy program, available at every campus, coaches students in public speakingskills so that they can complete class presentations with confidence.

CAST Anywhere

Center for Academic Success Tutoring Anywhere, or CAST Anywhere, is a remote tutoringprogram. Students who prefer to connect to group or individual tutoring, study groups,computer skills assistance, or Speakeasy may access these programs on an onlineplatform, available from any computer with a camera and a microphone. Some onlineclasses also have an "Ask the Tutor" discussion board where students can dialogue with apeer about questions and ideas from their course. WriteAid provides asynchronous, remotefeedback to students on their writing so that they can navigate the writing processindependently. The Center's Blackboard site provides a range of online resources tostudents, including coursespecific materials, a LibGuide on writing and citations, andwebinars on study skills.

Learning Strategies

Students can attend forums and discussions on a variety of learning skills, including timemanagement, maximizing study time, working effectively in groups, memory techniques,and many more topics that allow students to excel in their courses and gain confidence.These events may take place on campus or in the classroom. Students who are interestedin developing their academic strategies on an individual basis may work with Center staffto develop a plan for more effective learning onsite or online.

Career ServicesBerkeley College provides a variety of career development and employment assistanceservices through the Career Services Department. The Career Services Departmentincludes more than 30 career professionals who assist students in identifying and pursuingemployment opportunities in the New York/New Jersey area.

During their first term, a career counselor introduces students to the services offered bythe department. This begins the partnership between students and career specialists andprovides students with a forum to explore career opportunities.

Individual assistance with resume preparation and job interviewing strategies is anotherintegral part of the educational program. Career Fairs, oncampus employer presentationsand interviews, seminars, and workshops are organized regularly to help students identifyemployment opportunities as well as assist them with their professional development.

Internship Opportunities

Career specialists work with individual students to identify internships that are best suitedto students' majors, interests, and abilities. Interviews are scheduled in a variety of fields.

FinancesStudents interested in applying for financial aid must submit a Free Application for FederalStudent Aid (FAFSA). As a result, students eligible for financial aid will be offered afinancial aid package detailing eligibility for federal, state, and institutional grants,scholarships, and loans. Federal and state aid will be awarded to eligible students based onneed and enrollment level as determined by federal and state formulas. Berkeley Collegeneedbased aid may be awarded to students who have borrowed their annual maximumStafford loan and have unmet needs after federal and state aid has been awarded. Allstudents have the opportunity, and are encouraged, to meet with a financial aidadministrator.

Berkeley College recommends that students avoid unnecessary borrowing. College financialaid packages are developed with this goal in mind. Generally, eligibility for grants andscholarships will be considered before Federal Direct Student Loans are included. FinancialAid packages are calculated to reflect charges that are payable directly to the College,including tuition and fees and the cost of student housing obtained through the College.

Early Refund for Books and SuppliesIn accordance with federal guidelines, students who meet certain criteria will receive a disbursement of financial aid fundsto cover the cost of books and supplies not later than the seventh day of each semester. The value of the earlydisbursement will be the lesser of $500 and the anticipated Title IV (Federal) Credit.

Not all students will qualify for this early refund. To be eligible for this early disbursement, a student must meet all of thefollowing criteria:

The student must be eligible for Title IV Aid;Institutional file verification/file review must have been approved no later than 10 days prior to the start of thesemester; andThe student’s Federal Aid (without consideration of any other assistance such as State and Institutional Grantsand/or Scholarships) is greater than direct costs payable to the College (tuition and fees, plus housing costs forstudents who obtain housing through the College).

A student who qualifies for an early refund for books and supplies, but does not want the funds disbursed, may opt out ofthe disbursement by by sending an email to [email protected]. Students must put OPT OUT inthe subject line and include their name and Student ID in the body of the email.

If notification of the student’s decision to opt out of the early refund is not received by the start of the semester, thefunds may be disbursed. The OPT OUT will be good for the life of your education at Berkeley College Education until suchtime as you advise us to reserve it. You can do this by sending the same email but put RESERVE OPT OUT in the subjectline.

Other Title IV RefundsA refundable Federal Student Aid (FSA) credit balance occurs only if the total amount of FSA program funds exceedsallowable charges. The order in which funds are credited to a student’s account does not determine which award createsthe refundable FSA credit. Instead, Berkeley applies Title IV aid to direct charges (tuition, fees, and housing) in thefollowing order:

Federal Parent Loans (FDPLUS)Federal Direct Stafford LoansFederal Pell GrantsFederal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)

Federal Work Study is not directly applied to a student’s account.

Accordingly, most student Title IV credits, if any, will be created by Federal Grants, rather than loans.

When a disbursement of Title IV funds to the student’s account at the school creates a Title IV credit balance, the Collegewill pay the credit balance directly to the student or parent (when applicable) within 14 days after the credit is posted.

If the student so authorizes in writing, the College will hold Title IV credit balances and apply them toward otherregular charges incurred within the same year and award period (as defined below). The student may revoke thisauthorization at any time. If a student’s aid package includes a Direct Loan, then the “year” is the loan period. Ifthe student’s aid package does not include a Direct Loan, then the “year” is the award year (period ofregistration between July 1 and June 30). All funds will be returned within 14 days after June 30 of the awardyear or the award period, whichever comes first. The exception is if the Borrower Based Award Year (BBAY)includes periods before and after July 1. In that case, the credit may be held and applied for the second semesterin that period.

With a student's written authorization and under special circumstances, the College may apply up to $200 of an FSAcredit balance to a prior year's charges.

Seven Week Session Students

Federal and Berkeley College Institutional Aid (IA) will be disbursed in full assuming students will attend all courses,including those in session B, which does not begin until the 8th week of the semester. If a course or courses are notattended this can impact (reduce or cause the loss of) federal Pell, federal SEOG and IA.

Students who fail to start session B will be responsible for repayment of any refunds the College remits to them based onanticipated Session B attendance. which may result in a balance due.

Neither New York State TAP nor New Jersey State TAG may be disbursed until the 12th credit (making a student full time)has started. For most students enrolled in sessions, that will mean disbursement cannot be made until the student hasattended that course (or courses) in session B, at least once in week 8 of the semester.

Satisfactory Academic ProgressINTRODUCTION

Qualitative Assessments: Every matriculated student is required to maintain a minimumgrade point average (GPA), which varies based on the number of credits the student hasalready attempted. Compliance with this qualitative requirement is measured every term.Continued failure to meet this standard after a warning (automatic) or probationary (whenpermitted) period, or failing to fulfill the requirements of a prescribed academic plan, willlead to dismissal from the College. Probation may be granted and academic plans may beprescribed at the sole discretion of the College, only after a successful appeal by thestudent. Some programs have more restrictive requirements using different thresholds forpassing grades. The details can be viewed, by program, in the Catalog. All course gradesbelow the minimum passing standard for that course will be treated as failures incalculating the student’s GPA for qualitative assessment. Students will not be allowed tochange programs without approval from the Academic Advisement Department.

Quantitative Assessments: Students are also required to pass a minimum percentage ofthe credits they attempt in order to remain eligible for enrollment. Quantitative progressassessments are subject to those same warning, probation, and academic plan proceduresevery term. Some programs have more restrictive requirements using different thresholdsfor passing grades. The details can be viewed, by program, in the Catalog. All coursegrades below the minimum passing standard for that course will be treated as creditsattempted and not earned for purposes of quantitative assessment. Students will not beallowed to change programs without approval from the Academic Advisement Department.

For this purpose credits attempted are all those completed that receive a letter grade(including an F, WP, and Developmental credits). The quarter policy applies to studentsenrolled in 12week quarters. The semester policy applies to students enrolled in both 14and 15week semesters.

Students in Baccalaureate programs must have a GPA of at least 2.00 at the end of theirsecond academic year.

QUANTITATIVE STANDARDS

In addition to the qualitative standards set forth above, students must meet quantitativestandards of progress in order to remain eligible for enrollment.

150 Percent Rule

In order to maintain the quantitative standards for satisfactory academic progress,students must be able to complete their programs by the time they have attempted 150percent of the required credit hours necessary for graduation in their degree programs.The maximum timeframe for each program is listed below:

Application of the 150 Percent Rule

The College includes developmental and test credits as “credits attempted” in applying the150 percent metric. For students who have changed programs and/or have returned tocomplete additional degrees, only the attempted credits applicable to their currentprograms will be counted in the 150 percent calculation. Students will not be allowed tochange programs without approval from the Academic Advisement Department.

Students for whom it is no longer possible to comply with the 150 percent rule beforeprogram completion will be declared ineligible to participate in Title IV or TAG programs. Atthe discretion of the Provost’s Office, these students may be dismissed from the College.Such decisions are not appealable.

Progress Assessments

To help students avoid reaching the 150 percent point, the College tests student progressevery term, based on attempted vs. earned benchmarks. The following standards areapplied:

For this purpose, attempted credits include developmental courses, test credits, and allcredits accepted in transfer. In addition, all credits for which a letter grade was received,including F, WP, and WF (withdrawn after tuition assessment), are counted as attemptedcredits. Credits earned include all coursework that was successfully completed (studentreceived a passing grade). The quarter policy applies to students enrolled in 12weekquarters. The semester policy applies to students enrolled in 15week semesters.

Please note that in some certificate programs the grade of C is treated as a failing grade.Consult the Berkeley College Catalog or Student Handbook Supplements applicable tocertain health studies programs for programspecific details.

WARNINGS AND APPEALS

Warning of Failure to Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Requirements

Students who, for the first time, fail to meet standards will automatically be placed onWarning status for the following term. Students on Warning status may continue to beenrolled and, if applicable, maintain their eligibility for financial aid. Students who meet theSAP standards during the Warning (subsequent) term will be restored to good standing.

Appeals for Probation

Students who fail to meet standards during the Warning term may appeal to be placed onProbation status for the subsequent term. Failure to submit an appeal if required will resultin withdrawal from the College. Students on probation may continue to be enrolled and, ifapplicable, maintain their eligibility for financial aid. Students who have met the SAPstandards by the end of the probationary term will be restored to good standing.

Appeals for Academic Plans

Students who fail to meet the SAP standards by the end of a probation term may appealagain to be given academic plans customized for their needs. Failure to submit an appeal ifrequired will result in withdrawal from the College. Academic plans, to which students mustagree, are designed to allow students to achieve compliance with SAP requirements withina reasonable period of time. Students on academic plans may continue to be enrolled and,if applicable, maintain their eligibility for financial aid programs as long as they satisfy theterms and conditions of their plans.

Academic Advisement

The College will promptly contact students placed on Warning, Probation, or Academic Planstatus to offer additional academic support services.

Appeal Procedures

Students dismissed for failure to meet qualitative standards or prescribed quantitativebenchmarks may appeal those dismissals by timely submission of online eForms.Dismissals for failure to satisfy the 150 percent rule are not appealable.

Students will be notified when their appeals have been submitted successfully. The appealswill be reviewed, as needed, by the Satisfactory Academic Process (SAP) ReviewCommittee, which is comprised of representatives appointed by the Provost’s Office.Decisions made by the SAP Review Committee will be based on several criteria, includingany special circumstances that contributed to the failure to satisfy SAP requirements andmaterial changes in such circumstances. Students who successfully appeal may be restoredto good academic standing by meeting the SAP standards in the subsequent term orfollowing their prescribed academic plans. Students whose appeals are granted will receiveinstructions from the Academic Advisement Department on how to proceed. Approvedappeals will be honored for two terms, the term for which they are appealing and thesubsequent term.

Provisional Appeals

Students on Warning or Probation status who are not succeeding in their studies areencouraged to submit provisional appeals even before the end of the term. Provisionalappeals by students who go on to meet SAP standards in that term will be deemedwithdrawn.




Denial of an Appeal

If a failing student’s appeal is denied, the student will be notified and dismissed from theCollege.

Reinstatement after Dismissal or Loss of Eligibility for Financial Aid Due to Failureto Meet SAP Standards

The College will consider exceptional appeals for reinstatement of students who have notbeen enrolled for a minimum of one term. Students dismissed or declared ineligible forfinancial aid due to their failure to meet SAP standards may later experience positivechanges in their personal circumstances that improve their chances for future academicsuccess. Reinstatement of such students will be at the nonappealable discretion of theProvost’s Office and will be conditioned upon adherence to prescribed academic plans. Onlythose whose student accounts are current will be considered for reinstatement.

SAP and Transfer Credits

In measuring compliance with SAP standards, transfer credits will be considered as creditsattempted and earned. Therefore, since transfer credits are ungraded but are neverthelesscounted in calculating SAP requirements, transfer students may be required to earn atleast a 2.00 GPA in their first term (and all subsequent terms) at Berkeley in order toremain in good standing.

SAP and Repeated Courses

When a course is successfully repeated, the original failure(s) is not included in calculatingthe cumulative GPA or the qualitative requirements. For the quantitative SAP measure,however, each failed attempt will be included in the “courses attempted” portion of theevaluation.

SAP and Incomplete Grades

Effective January 1, 2012, initial calculations of SAP will treat incomplete grades as Fgrades until such incompletes are replaced with passing letter grades. After the first weekof the following term, all unresolved incomplete grades will convert to F grades and will betreated as such in all SAP evaluations. To accommodate grade changes, final SAPcalculations are made after all grades have been recorded.

SAP and Course Withdrawal

Students who drop courses will receive letter grades of either WP (withdrawnpassing) orWF (withdrawnfailing). These grades will not be considered in the application of qualitativerequirements, but will be counted as credits attempted for quantitative purposes.

SAP and Developmental Coursework

Effective January 1, 2012, even though they are not applied toward the number of creditsrequired to complete a program of study, developmental credits will be included in bothqualitative and quantitative SAP measurements.

SAP and NonMatriculated Students

Students enrolled as nonmatriculated students will not be held to the SAP standards.However, if nonmatriculated students matriculate, then all coursework will be included inSAP calculations.

General InformationPublic Safety Department

The Berkeley College Public Safety Department works continuously to maintain a safeenvironment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. All members of the Berkeleycommunity are encouraged to join in maintaining safe and pleasant places to learn, live,and work.

Students can help in several ways:

Parking

Oncampus parking is available for students at the Woodland Park, Paramus, andWoodbridge campuses. Parking permits, which may be obtained at registration at theStudent Development and Campus Life Department, are required for all campuses andmust be displayed in the vehicles. Please note that general parking is prohibited in areasreserved for the handicapped or for visitors, faculty, or staff.

A limited number of parking permits is also available each semester on a firstcome, firstserve basis for students attending the Dover campus. Applications may be submittedthrough the Student Development and Campus Life Department. It is recommended thatstudents use public parking lots that are available throughout the town.

The College is not responsible for theft of or damage to vehicles or their contents. It issuggested that you remove anything of special value, such as laptops, from your car orlock them in the trunk while parked on campus.

Public parking garages and limited onstreet parking are available near the Newark, WhitePlains, Midtown Manhattan, and Brooklyn campuses. The White Plains campus is diagonallyacross the street from the Hamilton Main Municipal Parking Garage. The public garageoffers hourly rate day parking, and a limited number of quarterly parking permits areavailable for purchase through the Student Accounts Office. In addition, the WhitePlains Transportation Center is three blocks from campus and provides bus and trainservice.

The College encourages all students to use public transportation whenever possible.

Food Service

Woodland Park has a cafe located in the atrium in the Renaissance Hall building. A varietyof hot and cold foods, snacks, and beverages are available throughout the day. All otherlocations offer vending machines and microwave ovens in their Student Centers and haverestaurants nearby.

Eating is not permitted in the academic areas of the campuses. Beverages are notpermitted in any computer classroom.

Fire drills are held several times during the year for your protection. Please familiarizeyourself with the detailed instructions posted in classrooms and residence halls.

Insurance

The College is not responsible for loss of or damage to the personal property of students orguests, who should take reasonable steps to protect their belongings. It is recommendedthat students arrange for appropriate insurance coverage for their personal property.

Residence Halls

Student housing is available at the White Plains campus. Policies governing the operationof Cottage Place and Sussex House Residence Halls are set forth in the Residence LifeHandbook. Any student who fails to abide by such policies may be subject to disciplinaryaction, up to and including dismissal from housing or from the College.

Contact Information

Contact information for students must be current. Students can change their address aswell as cell or home telephone number through the Student SelfService tab onBlackboard. In order for students to change their name, legal documentation of the newname must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar with a request for modification oftheir name.

BerkAlert

Prior to or during an emergency situation, the College may utilize BerkAlert to notifystudents of any pending emergency via text messaging and email. Contact information forstudents must be current in order for them to be reached in the event of an emergency.Students must access the Student SelfService tab on Blackboard to update their contactinformation.

The Berkeley Store

School supplies and a selection of Berkeley College apparel and merchandise are availableon the online Berkeley Store and an onsite store on the Woodland Park campus. Studentsmay shop online and have their orders shipped to any Berkeley College campus for pick upat no extra charge. The Berkeley Store hours are posted on its website.

Most courses use eTexts and do not require traditional textbooks. If a traditional textbookis required for a course, the information, including course requirements, pricing,International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN), and available textbook options may befound on The Berkeley Store's website. Textbooks are generally available two weeks beforethe start of each semester.

When the program tuition and fees includes books and supplies, students have the optionof purchasing any required traditional textbooks and supplies from another source, as longas they meet the requirements for the course. In order to receive a credit fortextbooks/supplies that are purchased from another source, a student must request awaiver from the Department Chair who will determine the appropriateness of the items. Ifapproved, the Chair will forward that information to the Berkeley Store to verify that theitems distributed by the College have been returned, and the waiver will be forwarded tothe Student Accounts Department so that a credit can be applied to the student’s account.

Students with financial aid credit may charge required course supplies other than booksagainst the funds by submitting a signed "Transfer of Funds Request" form to the StudentAccounts Department. This form is available on Blackboard.
