2019 MS Bike Cyclist Handbook 3

Welcome to MS Bike 2019Whether you’re a returning participant who rode with us last year, or a rookie a little nervous of riding in a bike tour, you can look forward to an exciting and fun ride while making a difference to end MS. As a participant in the MS Bike, you are making a great impact on the lives of people living with multiple sclerosis.

Last year in Manitoba, your dollars helped to:

• Deliver 165 support group sessions.

• Offer 18 wellness programs.

• Host 12 education sessions.

• Provide over $11,700 in grants to 39 people with MS to purchase needed medical equipment.

• Host a one day conference designed for young adults in their 20s and 30s living with MS.

• Host a one day conference designed for all Manitobans living with MS and their caregivers

• Contribute to an incredible investment of $10 million toward ground-breaking MS research and help launch the Knowledge Network that further expands our ability to provide information and help to people affected by MS.

This year we look forward to continuing to provide support and services to people with MS and their families, and fund important research to find the cause and cure for this disease.

Our mission

To be a leader in finding a cure for multiple sclerosis and enabling people affected by MS to enhance their quality of life.

About multiple sclerosis:

• Canada has the highest rate of MS in the world.

• 77,000+ Canadians live with MS.

• MS is the most common neurological disease affecting young adults in Canada.

• World-leading MS research is being produced by MS experts across the country.

• MS is a disease that affects not only individuals, but also families who come together to manage the realities of MS.

4 GEAR UP TO END MS

In 2018, the MS Society of Canada released evidence-based recommendations for vitamin D supplementation and maintenance of vitamin D serum levels bringing us one step closer to answering a long-standing question – is there a connection between daily vitamin D intake and the risk of developing MS?

“According to multiple studies, vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for MS,” says Dr. Ruth Ann Marrie, Director, MS Clinic, Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre and a member of the Vitamin D and MS Panel who worked on the recommendations. They provide optimal dosing ranges for people with or at risk for MS, and information about comorbid conditions, sun exposure, vitamin D supplements, and food sources.

“Having these recommendations available to someone like myself, who may be at risk of the disease, gives me hope,” says Marie-Ève Simard, whose mother lives with MS.

Your impactBy joining MS Bike you have become a part of a movement of 10,000+ cyclists across Canada who are determined to make a difference in the lives of their fellow Canadians.

Every dollar you fundraise supports ground-breaking research and impactful services, making life better for people affected by MS.

Research funding The MS Society is on the cusp of important research breakthroughs that will change lives, and your fundraising makes it all possible. Here are the areas of focus of currently funded MS research.

• Start early Once you register, start fundraising. The sooner you start asking, the sooner you will reach, and even surpass, your goal. So start asking today!

• Use the Participant Centre The Participant Centre’s tools and resources make it easy to achieve your fundraising goal. You can edit your personal page, request secure donations, send customizable e-mails and track your progress at msbike.ca.

• Set a goal of $1000 When you set a higher goal, many people will give larger donations to help you reach it. If you raise $1,000, you earn our commemorative Club 1000 jersey. Raise $2,000 and you earn the matching shorts.

• Make it personal Donate towards your own fundraising goal to get the momentum going and show your commitment to the cause.

• Ask your top donors first To set the standard of donations you receive, reach out first to those who’ve been generous in the past or who will support your efforts.

• Then ask everyone This is the number one tip given by our top fundraisers—and when we say everyone, we mean everyone! Share why you ride and be prepared to tell donors about MS and how their donations are put to good use.

• Ask your workplace Check with your workplace if it offers a charity matching gift program. Send in a request to match your donation to help increase your fundraising total.

• Use social media Post a link to your personal fundraising page on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn, and ask your friends, family and business network to donate. Take advantage of our social media tools and download our new and improved MS Bike app, details at msbike.ca.

• Get creative Fundraising doesn’t have to be restricted to asking for donations. Sell your baked goods in return for a donation. Throw a party and ask guests to donate in lieu of a hostess gift. Organize a sports pool and dedicate a portion of the money to your fundraising. Your donors will appreciate your effort and commitment.

• Join or form a team Need to stay motivated? Many teams are looking to welcome new members. Call 1.800.268.7582 ext. 4912 to find out how to join an existing team, or form your own team with coworkers, family and friends. There is power and fun in numbers.

• Thank your donors Follow up and thank those who have helped you reach your fundraising goal! This is made easy through pre-populated and customizable templates in the Participant Centre.

Safety on route

Ride support

This is NOT a competitive race. Respect fellow cyclists and their level of cycling experience. Some participants are recreational cyclists.

Wear your helmet. This is MANDATORY and it’s the LAW.

The roads are open and therefore cyclists must always follow the Motor Vehicle Act.

Obey all traffic signs and signals at all times.

Please ride single file at all times as the road is narrow with a limited shoulder in many areas.

For the safety of our cyclists, participants must be 10 years of age or older by the date of the tour to take part.

Rest stopsRest stops are located along the route. Each rest stop is stocked with water, and snacks. Stopping at the rest stops is optional.

SAG vehiclesSAG (Support and Gear) vehicles travel along the route between rest stops. They can help cyclists along the route with flats and basic first aid. If a cyclist is unable to complete the ride, for whatever reason, a SAG vehicle can transport the cyclist to the finish line or to the next rest stop.

Children between the ages of 10 and 17 MUST have a participating adult over the age of 18 responsible for them at all times while on the route.

Cyclists must wait until the tour officially starts on both days before beginning to ride to ensure support and rest stops are up and running.

Always yield to pedestrians.

No headphones or ear-buds while riding.

Cyclists must dismount at all railroad crossings and walk their bike across the tracks to ensure their safety.

Ride on the right side of the road, to the right of the white line when possible, to be respectful of traffic and to avoid a lineup of vehicles.

Bike PatrolBike Patrols are available on certain tours to help along the route. They can contact a SAG (Support and Gear) vehicle if needed. Bike Patrols can be identified by their reflective vests.

To signal a SAG vehicle driver, follow these steps:• Move safely off the road and well

out of the path of other cyclists.

• Dismount and stand near your bike.

• Remove your helmet and wave it at the SAG vehicle.

Pass on the left. Announce yourself to other cyclists by saying “ON YOUR LEFT”.

When another cyclist is passing you on the left, do not turn around. Hold handlebars steady and keep your bike straight while maintaining your speed.

Only use your cell phone when stopped and pulled to the right out of bike and vehicle traffic.

Watch out for road hazards such as patches of loose gravel on the road.

Please respect the communities that we ride through. They support the MS Society and our mission to end MS, and therefore support you too.

Route MarshalsRoute Marshals provide extra safety and security by being stationed at various key points along the route. These volunteers are key by assisting cyclists in showing them the right direction to ride, assisting in crossing the street at intersections and stationed at potential hazards, ie. Railroad crossings.

First aidTrained first aid volunteers patrol the route to help all participants. In case of an emergency, please call 911.

Gimli experienceThis year marks the 30th Anniversary of the MS Bike Ride in Manitoba! This year, the route offers two different options for our cyclists to enjoy based on the comfort of their cycling abilities. We are offering a 49.5km (short) or a 81km (long) option. Both route options will start at the Gimli Recreation Centre and cycle down Highway 9, where they will enjoy the scenic views of Lake Winnipeg as they go through cottage country. Cyclists will then ride down to Matlock, where they can decide the distance that they would like to go. For cyclists who decide to only ride the short (49.5km) route, they will then head back north along Highway 9 and then finish at the Gimli Recreation Centre.

Cyclists who wish to get in a few more kilometers in their ride, can head south on Highway 9 and travel to Petersfield, where they will enjoy lunch before heading back north along Highway 9. On the return trip, cyclists will once again head to Matlock and then cycle along the shores of Lake Winnipeg before hitting the rest stops in Dunnottar and Sandy Hook prior to their finish at the Gimli Recreation Centre.

Sunday morning starts at 9am and cyclists will ride the shorter (49.5km) loop and once again enjoy the scenic views of Lake Winnipeg before finishing at the Gimli Recreation Centre. Upon finishing, we will be celebrating the success of the cyclists with our finish line BBQ lunch! Our aim is to provide all cyclists with the same finish line experience, cheer each other on and have cyclists rejoin their teams for one final celebration of their success of finishing the ride.

Upcoming EventsTraining ridesWe welcome riders of all skill levels abilities to take part in our training rides and encourage our first-time participants and novice cyclists to join us out on the road! These rides provide a great opportunity to meet new individuals, build new friendships and learn new bike specific skills!

2019 Training ride schedule:• Saturday July 13 – 10:00 am

• Wednesday July 17 – 6:00 pm

• Saturday July 27 – 10:00 am

• Wednesday July 31 – 6:00 pm

• Saturday Aug 10 – 10:00 am

• Saturday Aug 17 – 10:00 am

• Wednesday Aug 21 – 6:00pm (Longer group ride, leaves from MS Society office)

The training will focus on:• Hydration

• Nutrition

• Basic mechanical (Air, Brakes & Bars, Chain & Cranks) and changing a tire

• What’s in your tool bag?

• Importance of recovery

• How to ride in a group

• How to ride in a paceline (to stay out of the wind and go faster)

• What you need to carry on ride day

LocationThe first six rides will depart from the south east corner of the No Frills parking lot, (formerly Extra Foods) Southglen Shopping Centre, (740 St. Anne’s Rd.) The seventh ride will leave from the MS Society Office (#100-1465 Buffalo Place) and will coincide with advance check-in/info night.

Just like the MS Rides, these are rain or shine but not lightning, hail or crazy windy (winds gusting above 50 km/h).

Depending on the abilities of the group we will have 2 destinations:

Grande Pointe: A 5km ride south to a 9.5km loop where groups will split up into different abilities and work on improving skills with hands-on coaching. Some may only do one lap, where others may do 3 laps. Riders will all head back together. The more advanced group may find themselves working up to a 25km/h average speed as they work to improve their skills in Paceline riding, drafting and riding in an echelon. For others the focus may simply be to improve their own speed and endurance while having knowledgeable coaching available.

St Adolphe: This route offers more of a simulation to the MS bike tours. It is a 50km return trip out St Mary’s Road, less coaching and more riding.

To register:Visit bit.ly/MStrainingride or call Jordie Moryl at 204.943.9595 ext. 4912.

MS Bike NightJoin us on July 25th for an information night, listen from our event Ambassador’s and Top Fundraisers and get to know fellow cyclists!

Bike Tune Up PartyJoin us on August 21st for our Bike Tune Up Party from 4 pm – 8 pm at the MS Society office. Come and enjoy some food, a free bike inspection and tune up and participate in the final training ride of the season.
