The Accident & Emergency Department provides a service for the assessment and initial management of peoplesuffering from significant acute illness or injury. It accurately assesses and, if indicated, effectively treats minorillness or injury.The Department is always open but people are encouraged to recognise that it is an emergency servicealthough follow-up clinics are held and physiotherapy is available within the Department. There is a separatechildren’s area and a primary care service is in place for evenings and weekends. A nurse-led minor injuriesservice is also provided.CONSULTANTS

Provides integrated child health services for the child and his/her family. The department includes a range ofspecialty services as well as secondary level general paediatric services. St George’s Hospital The Department offers a comprehensive surgical service to children, led by three specialist paediatric surgeons.Facilities include the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, an expanding ICU for older children, dedicatedpaediatric operating theatre and outpatient clinic. St George’s HospitalGPs have open-access to the Phlebotomy service by direct referral of patients between 9am and 5pm Monday toFriday. Central reception receives specimens from GPs, their staff and patients between 9am and 5pm Mondayto Friday. Reception staff also distribute specimen containers and request forms, etc. as required and answer allgeneral, non-results, enquiries about the pathology service. Central Pathology also co-ordinates the GP courierservice which visits each practice daily (Monday-Friday) for the collection of specimens, the delivery of reportsand consumables, and the exchange of mail.

St George’s HospitalThe Trauma & Orthopaedic Department provides both emergency and elective orthopaedic services with anumber of areas of special interest. It is appropriately supported by the key rehabilitation services such asPhysiotherapy. Inpatient beds (72) are located on the fifth floor of St. James’ Wing, outpatient clinics on theground floor, and day cases in the Day Surgery Unit. Fracture clinics take place each morning Mon - Fri to whichpatients with acute injuries presenting to the A&E Department will be referred.
