wellness vendors will provide information, health readings and handouts at the Dover Downs Hotel. (this is not a trip to the Dover Downs Casino.) Cost is $7.00 for transportation.

10 Dover Trip to Biggs Museum, Bylers, Willeys, 9:30-2:45. Well visit the Biggs Museum to view American art & a quilt display. Then on to Bylers Store, featuring Amish foods, housewares & gifts. Then we will stop at Willeys on the way home for spring plants and gift items.

14 Shuffleboard Contest, 10:00. New Castle Senior Center.

16 Shady Maple, 9:30-3:00. Cost is $19.75 for transportation and buffet (price increase on March 1). Those attending the buffet will be reserved first upon payment for the trip. If spaces are available as of the deadline date (April 10), then bus riders will be taken for a transportation fee of $7.50.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Please sign up and pay for trips/events by the designated deadline. Your bus seat is guaranteed only when the fee is paid.

If the minimum number of participants is not met by the deadline the trip/event will be cancelled and payment will be returned. A late fee will be imposed on those not meeting the deadline date providing the trip/event has a sufficient number registered.

Current WSC members are placed first on the Centers 16 passenger bus for day trips. Non-members may attend a day trip if there are unpaid seats after the trips deadline.

Please bring small bills to pay for trips and lunches since the receptionists cannot make change for large bills.

Remember to make suggestions for activities!

LUNCH ORDERS All requests for lunch must be made no later than 1:00 the previous day. Once a lunch is ordered you are responsible for its payment. If you need to cancel after the lunch has been order, call immediately. We will then know the meal is available in case someone else wants to purchase it. If the meal is sold you do not have to pay for it. However, if the meal is unsold you need to remit the $2.00 asap. Unsold meals are billed to the Center on a monthly basis at the $4.50 price. COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS PROVIDE RESOURCES

Caregivers Support Group at Wilmington Senior Center April 10th

Join other caregivers on the second Thursday of each month from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. for our Caregiver Support Group thats facilitated by staff from Delaware Hospice. A first-time participant shared this response when asked about the support group experience: The support group provided a relaxed atmosphere and comfortable setting for sharing personal feelings and gaining valuable information. Heather and Etta, the leaders, showed great empathy and listened without being judgmental. I left feeling good.

Christiana Care Caregivers Education Series April 3rd, 10th and 17th

A free lecture series to assist those in the role of caregiver is being offered by Christiana Cares Visiting Nurse Association on 3 consecutive Thursday evenings from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. in Room 100 at the Eugene du Pont Preventive Medicine & Rehabilitation Institute at 3506 Kennett Pike in Wilmington. The classes are ideal for caregivers, health care professionals, community leaders and others in contact with caregivers. Learn all about:

Planning for care, accessing community resources & state and federal programs, etc.

Dealing with caregiver challenges such as personal care, bathing, assistive devices, prevention and symptoms of common geriatric problems, etc.

Managing day-to-day stressful activities Remedying caregiver burn-out, taking care of yourself and reducing stress

WILMINGTON ART LOOP As part of the Wilmington Art Loop on Friday, April 4th, COCA Art will have a pop-up art exhibit from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Union Park, 1704 Pennsylvania Avenue in Wilmington. The featured artist is contemporary realist painter Lisa Ashley. 30% of the sale proceeds of Lisa's art will benefit Wilmington Senior Center. Come see "art in unexpected places"!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Neighborhood House, a non-profit social service agency that has served the community of South Wilmington for more than 85 years, is seeking volunteer tutors for its after-school program. The program operates Monday through Thursday from 3:00-5:30 p.m., offering a safe and nurturing after-school environment for local children ages 5-18 years: however, most of the children who attend are of elementary school age.

PROTECT YOUR HEALTH

When youre sick, you have to deal with visits to the doctors office or the hospital, bottles of medications and days in bed recovering. Wouldnt it be easier to just stay healthy in the first place? If youre not a fan of medication schedules and wasting days weakly lying in bed, you should consider the powerful role that prevention care can play in keeping you healthy. The most important part of preventing disease and illness is healthy habits, including a balanced diet, sufficient sleep and enough exercise. Going to the doctor for recommended checkups and screenings is also a key factor in identifying and treating potential health problems before they develop or worsen. Recommendations vary depending on your age and gender, and sources such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offer guidelines for various preventive screenings and tests. Due to recent health care reform, you may be able to receive many preventive services at no cost. Non-grandfathered health plans are required to cover a variety of preventive services. Check out what is covered by your insurance and take advantage of preventive care that can keep you and your family healthy.
