November marks the beginning of some of the busiest months on the Penn Club’s calendar. The Clubhouse will be filled with events, and our overnight rooms will be in great demand. If you are making plans to stay at the Penn Club during this busy season, I encourage you to make your reservations as early as possible. This will give us the greatest opportunity to accommodate you. I would like to once again remind you that it is the Club’s policy to allow no more than 25% of our overnight rooms to be occupied by non-members. This policy was established by the House Committee several years ago to ensure that our members have the advantage of having their room requests granted.

In addition, I want to once again mention that our banquet spaces get heavy usage at this time of year. If you are planning to host a holiday gathering for family, friends or associates, we would love the opportunity to assist you with your needs. Our banquet team has a great reputation for service and culinary excellence. Since our spaces do fill up quickly at this time of year, I urge you to make your plans with our Catering Department as soon as possibly.

There are a couple of seasonal events that have become very popular Penn Club traditions. The first of these is our annual Thanksgiving Feast. This is a great opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving with all of the traditional trimmings. Your Club offers a bright and comfortable environment for a true gourmet experience. The second not-to-be-missed event is our annual Members’ Holiday

Party. This complimentary event is a great way to enjoy the seasonal cheer with your fellow members, and is sure to boost your festive mood. Both of these events are highlighted in this issue of HapPENNings as well as in our on-line newsletter, e-HapPENNings.

One other tradition that has become a true part of the Penn Club culture is our Penn Club Employees Holiday Fund. The Fund solicits your donations for distribution to all of our employees. As you are all aware, the Penn Club does not permit individual tipping, so this is your once-a-year opportunity to reward our award winning loyal and dedicated team members for the outstanding service they provide throughout the year. Over the years, through good times and bad, the Fund has continued to grow, and we have been able to give each employee a larger share than the year before. This distribution is shared by all of our staff members, with the exception of the senior management team. I do hope that your generosity will continue when you consider this year’s pledge. I want to thank you in advance for your thoughtful expression of appreciation to the Penn Club Employees Holiday Fund.

My staff and I look forward to being a part of your con-tinuing Penn Club experience throughout this busy and wonderful season. We are committed to providing you with an outstanding Platinum Club experience. We hope to see you often at the Penn Club, your home-away-from-home in New York.

A trumpet in the Wadi |by Sami MichaelMonday, November 16th, noon. Set in Haifa just before the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, this spirited, bittersweet novel captures the Arab-Israeli conflict in microcosm. The

seaside city is home to a family of Christian Arabs: irascible Elias, the patri-arch; his busy daughter-in-law, Umm-Huda; and her fatherless daughters, the beautiful Mary and her older, deplorably still unwed sister Huda. Also living in their crowded building in the wadi, or Arab quarter, is newcomer Alex, short in stature but well-muscled, a Russian-Jewish immigrant who plays his trumpet soulfully in the building’s rooftop shed. His music, patience and remarkable physique awaken the interest of reticent Huda, while Mary rejects the advances of Zuhair, the son of their shady Muslim landlord, for the security of plodding Wahid, her Muslim cousin. A trip taken by the two couples to the Red Sea resort of Eilat is an uproarious highlight, and a visit by Huda and Alex to a nursing home to see Alex’s ailing but tyrannical mother is a striking set-piece. The translation is oc-casionally stiff, and Michael tends toward over-explanation, but the novel deals cleverly and humorously with complicated relationships. Against the tragic backdrop of current events, the willingness of Michael’s characters to ignore the strictures of individual religious beliefs and to shun fanaticism, is refreshing, though perhaps increasingly hard to credit. Please join us over a catered lunch as Isabel Katzin leads discussion. Isabel holds a Master’s Degree and has studied in the US, Paris, and Israel. Formerly an English and French teacher, she has been a professional book group discussion leader for over 18 years and currently leads 28 groups.$49 plus tax and service charge per member and $54 plus tax and service charge per guest by November 13th at noon, $54 plus tax and service charge for mem-ber walk-ins and $59 plus tax and service charge for guest walk-ins. Scientific update on Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery |Monday, November 30th, 6:30 p.m. The Scientific Update at the Penn Club will be an evening of learning and dialogue to raise awareness for the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation* (ADDF). One of the most devastating forms of memory loss is Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible and progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and think-ing skills. Today, Alzheimer’s is the second most-feared illness in America, following cancer, and may affect as many as five million Americans. As the baby-boom generation moves through retirement, that number could soar to more than 11 million by 2040, and have a huge economic impact on America’s already fragile healthcare system. There is now genuine reason to be optimistic about the future of Alzheimer’s disease, and Dr. Fillit will share this hope with the Penn Club members. *The Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation is a public charity founded by Leonard and Ronald Lauder to rapidly accelerate the discovery and develop-

ment of drugs to prevent, treat and cure Alzheimer’s disease, related dementias and cognitive aging. We award grants to leading scientists conducting break-through drug discovery research. ADDF uses a venture philanthropy model to bridge the worldwide funding gap between basic research and later-stage development, using any return on investment to support new research.

Howard Fillit, MD, a geriatrician and neuroscientist, is the founding Executive Director of the Institute for the Study of Aging (ISOA), an Estée Lauder family foundation founded in 1998, and the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF), an affiliated public charity founded in 2004. The foundations share a common mission of accelerating drug

discovery for Alzheimer’s disease through venture philanthropy. Since 1998, ISOA has provided over $29MM to over 170 academic and biotech-nology programs in 12 countries.$15 per member and $30 per guest by November 25th at noon. $25 per member and $40 per guest walk-in. RICH: The Rise and Fall of American Wealth Culture Signing with larry Samuel |January 5th, 6:30p.m. As Americans, we have been taught to be obsessed with money and the people who have it. We are curious about what they buy, where they vacation, and what separates them from the rest of us. RICh: The Rise and Fall of American Wealth Culture (Amacom, 2009) puts the American obsession with all things money into much-needed perspective and context, exposing the origins of the upper class. The book traces the history of the American rich from 1920 up to today, examining the who, what, when, where, and why of the wealthy elite. With its hundreds of compelling, real-life stories, RICh offers a fascinating window into this world few ever see, and explores the rise of the first mass affluent class in America and the virtual demise of Old Money as we knew it. Enlightening and often surprising, RICH gives us a deeper understanding of our country’s wealthiest and most enigmatic class.larry Samuel is the founder of Culture Planning LLC, a Miami- and New York-based resource helping organizations market to the wealthy. Preventing the Flu:Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs

The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs that can be used to treat and prevent the flu.

1.  Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When

you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

2.  Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands

when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

3.  Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when

coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

4.  Clean your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from

germs.

5.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches

something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

6.  Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your

stress, drinks plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food.
