G E N E R A L M A N A G E R ’ SCorner

Happy New Year at the Penn Club of New York! Due to our relationship with the University of Pennsylvania, our activ-ity year mirrors the academic year. Hence, September marks a new year of programs, events, services and networking, as well as renewed refl ections on the many facets of your Club life. I hope you have all had an opportunity to enjoy the slightly slower pace that summer brings to our lives, and that you have been able to use this time of relaxation and refl ection to “re-charge your batteries” in anticipa-tion of the busier times that Autumn will bring. This has certainly been the case at the Penn Club.

Once again, we have used the less active summer months as an opportunity to go through our Clubhouse and perform our annual programs of cleaning, repairs and preventive maintenance, as well as a review of our facili-ties. The result is that your Club is refreshed and renewed, and ready for a new year of usage and activities.

As we enter our seventeenth year of operations, it’s excit-ing to reflect on the achievements we’ve made together. The Penn Club is the top ranked club in New York City, and the tenth ranked city club in the country. This did not happen without the shared vision of our membership and professional staff, as well as the support and encourage-ment of our Board of Directors. Together, we have a great deal to be proud of, as well as grateful for. At the same time, we all recognize that as years pass some needed refurbishments and upgrades become apparent. I want to assure you that we are aware of these areas, and that strategic areas of our Clubhouse will receive the attention

they deserve. Our primary mission is to maintain our shared vision as the premiere city club we have become.

One small item of housekeeping that I feel I should address is the fact that some of our members and guests might inadvertently infringe on the quiet enjoyment that all of you expect from the Penn Club. It was recently brought to my attention that occasionally we have situa-tions, especially in the Business Center, where individu-als have discussions or phone conversations that are somewhat louder than they need to be. The result is that information that should remain confidential is shared, and that quiet order is sometimes disrupted. While this is an infrequent and unintentional occurrence, I’d like to ask you maintain an awareness of the fact that the Penn Club is a shared social space for all of our members.

While summer can bring us a time of a slightly relaxed pace of life, it can also be an opportunity for a bit of pro-crastination. That invitation to renew your membership that began arriving last spring may have found its way to your “to-do” file. As we approach the end of our renewal period, I want to make sure that none of you miss out on the many values that the Penn Club brings to you. If you have put your renewal invitation aside while you pursued other interests, I’d like to urge you to renew now.

My staff and I are excited to be a part of your life at the Penn Club. We are eager to welcome you to your home-away-from-home as we once again enter an exciting New Year.

Cutting for Stone |by Abraham VergheseMonday, September 20th, 12:00 noon. Lauded for his sensi-tive memoir (My Own Country) about his time as a doctor in eastern Tennessee at the onset of the AIDS epidemic in the 80s, Verghese turns his formidable talents to fi ction, mining his own life and experiences in a magnifi cent, sweeping novel that moves from India to Ethiopia to an inner-city hospital in New York

City over decades and generations. Sister Mary Joseph Praise, a devout young nun, leaves the south Indian state of Kerala in 1947 for a mission-ary post in Yemen. During the arduous sea voyage, she saves the life of an English doctor bound for Ethiopia, Th omas Stone, who becomes a key player in her destiny when they meet up again at Missing Hospital in Addis Ababa. Seven years later, Sister Praise dies birthing twin boys: Shiva and Marion, the latter narrating his own and his brothers long, dramatic, biblical story set against the backdrop of political turmoil in Ethiopia, the life of the hospital compound in which they grow up and the love story of their adopted parents, both doctors at Missing. Th e boys become doctors as well and Verghese’s weaving of the practice of medicine into the narrative is fascinating even as the story bobs and weaves with the power and coincidences of the best 19th-century novel.$49 plus tax and service charge per member and $54 plus tax and service charge per guest by September 13th at noon. $54 plus tax and service charge per member and $59 plus tax and service charge per guest for late reservations.

e River of Doubt |by Candice MillardMonday, October 18th, 12:00 noon. In a gripping account, Millard focuses on an episode in Teddy Roosevelt’s search for adventure that nearly came to a disastrous end. A year after Roosevelt lost a third-party bid for the White House in 1912, he decided to chase away his blues by accepting an invitation for a South American trip that quickly evolved into an ill-prepared journey down an unexplored tributary of the Amazon known as the River of Doubt. Th e small group, including T.R.’s son Kermit, was hampered by the failure to pack enough supplies and the absence of ca-noes sturdy enough for the river’s rapids. An injury Roosevelt sustained became infected with fl esh-eating bacteria and left the ex-president so weak that, at his lowest moment, he told Kermit to leave him to die in the rainforest. Millard, a former staff writer for National Geographic, nails the suspense element of this story perfectly, but equally important to her success is the marvelous amount of detail she provides on the wildlife that Roosevelt and his fellow explorers encountered on their journey, as well as the cannibalistic indigenous tribe that stalked them much of the way.$49 plus tax and service charge per member and $54 plus tax and service charge per guest by October 11th at noon. $54 plus tax and service charge per member and $59 plus tax and service charge per guest for late reservations.

Who should attend? Those interested in health care and/or politics.

Tuesday, September 21st, 7:00 p.m. America’s health care system is about to undergo the most fundamental transformation in our nation’s history. An already over-stressed system must absorb 32 million new patients at the same time that the country’s huge baby boomer population is likely to need even more medical attention as they age. And many of our most experienced and talented physicians will soon be reaching retirement age, leaving fewer experienced doctors to treat more patients. Understanding how health care reform will aff ect the amount of time your primary care doctor can spend overseeing your care, as well as your ability to access the best specialists and facilities in the face of a serious diagnosis will be essential in this new health care era.

Leslie Michelson is the chairman and CEO of Private Health Management, a company committed to providing priority access to the world’s fi nest health care professionals for their clients. Leslie will draw on his expertise to present an overview of how the current health care system impacts all of us. More importantly, he’ll provide concrete information that the audi-

GreenIntelligence: Creating Environments that Protect Human Health |by John Wargo, Professor, Yale University

Who should attend? Those interested in environmental issues and current events.

Monday, September 27th, 7:00 p.m. We live in a world awash in manmade chemicals, from the pesticides on our front lawns to the diesel exhaust in the air we breathe. Although experts are beginning to understand the potential dangers of these substances, there are still more than 80,000 synthetic compounds that have not been suffi ciently tested to interpret their eff ects on human health. Yale University professor John Wargo has spent much of his career researching the impact of chemical exposures on women and children. In this book, he explains the origins of society’s profound misunderstanding of everyday chemical hazards and off ers a practical path toward developing greater “green intelligence.”Despite the rising trend in environmental awareness, information about syn-thetic substances is often unavailable, distorted, kept secret, or presented in a way that prevents citizens from acting to reduce threats to their health and the environment. By examining the histories of fi ve hazardous technologies and practices, Wargo fi nds remarkable patterns in the delayed discovery of dangers and explains the governments’ failures to manage them eff ectively. Sobering yet eminently readable, Wargo’s book ultimately off ers a clear vision for a safer future through prevention, transparency and awareness.

John Wargo is a Professor of Environmental Policy, Risk Analysis and Political Science, and Chair of the Yale College Environmental Studies Major and Program. B.A., University of Pennsylvania; M.L.A. University of Massachusetts, and Ph.D., Yale University. He holds appointments in the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and the Department of

Political Science, and is a fellow of Branford College. He has been a pro-fessor at Yale since 1985. He has lectured extensively on the limits and potential of environmental law, with a focus on human health. TheLadders.com CEO: You’re Better Than Your Job Search |

Who should attend? Current and future jobseekers

Tuesday, October 26th, 7:00 p.m. Unemployment rates are at the highest levels since the Great Depression and the modern job search has changed. As CEO and Founder of TheLadders, one of the largest job search services in the world, Marc Cenedella is intimately aware of the emotional highs and lows of the job search. Every Monday Marc sends a career advice newsletter to over 4 million members of TheLadders and has personally read thousands of email responses. Marc has seen one consistent theme over the years, which has become even more prevalent during the Great Recession: job seekers are quick to doubt their own qualifications and credentials when the going gets tough. Ironically, what Marc has discovered over the years is that a poorly executed job search is usually the main culprit of an unsuccessful job search. Based on seven years of interviews with job seekers, HR experts and recruiters, Marc has teamed up with Matthew Rothenberg, editor-in-chief of TheLadders, to deliver You’re Better Than Your Job Search (On-Sale: September 21), an informative and instructive guide-book that provides best practices, tools and checklists to keep job seekers on the right track. Join Marc as he shares his best advice about job hunting and career management with the Penn Club. Marc’s talk will be followed by an interactive question and answer session. $15 per member and $30 per guest by October 19th at noon. $25 per member and $40 per guest for late res-ervations. A Letter from Main Dining Room Manager, Tony KontosDear Penn Club Member,What a year! It was a magical year here for us at the Penn Club Main Dining Room, fi lled with new experiences and extraordinary events that reminded us how fortunate we are to have members like you who make the club the only place to be this Fall! Our years here have taught us to celebrate with the people who have helped make this club one of the best clubs in this great city of New York.Dealing with today’s challenging economy can feel like a roller coaster ride! As we rise up the track, as-cending over the details of the bigger picture, we are reminded of a lesson we’ve continuously relearned since the day our Dining Room opened back in 1994: Giving you the best value for your dollar. As we approach our re-opening of the Main Dining Room on September 13th, note that our chef Florimond Smoor has created a scrumptious menu of seasonal specialties with local produce and ingredients for those who dine with us! Our menu selections may change with the seasons but our top quality remains the same all year around. When the sun goes down, allow us to help make your evening truly spectacular with a delicious meal to properly match our phenomenal selection of wines. We’d love to see you there this September! To make your visit particularly fun, we have reserved a bottle of: Cabernet Sauvignon, Paumanok Vineyards, North Fork of Long Island 2007 for only $36 espe-cially for you, with our many thanks and a world of the best wishes for helping us reach our goals.I look forward to serving you,

— Tony KontosRestaurant Manager
