As you know, everything is bigger in Texas, and UBA is the largest Bapst associaon in the whole world. The earliest missionary (disnguished from an-missionary or hardshell) Bapst work in Texas is aributed to Z. N. Morrell. While he was a Bapst pastor in Tennessee, his doctor diagnosed him with “consumpon of the lungs” (tuberculosis) and encouraged him to move to a drier climate. He crossed the Sabine River entering Texas in April of 1835 when the bluebonnets were in full bloom. Morrell fell in love with Texas. He found other Bapsts from Tennessee in Texas and preached his first sermon to them on December 30, 1835. He helped to organize the first missionary Bapst church in Texas, the Independence Church at Washington-on-the- Brazos, in 1837. In 1840 a call went out to gather at that church in June for the purpose of organizing an associaon. Some 25 representaves met there, but division between missionary and an- mission senment prevented its success. The host pastor, T. W. Cox, flatly refused any compromise with the “hardshells.” Cox summoned another group that met in October of that same year at the Travis church (south of Brenham). Morrell was sympathec to this work but was ill and could not aend. Eleven messengers came from three churches—Travis, Independence, and LaGrange. Of these three churches, Cox had founded two of them and served as the pastor of all three of them. They voted unanimously to form the Union Bapst Associaon and elected as their first moderator, you guessed it, T. W. Cox. In their very next meeng one year later, they formed a Texas Bapst Educaon Society. This Educaon Society began serious work planning a Bapst instuon of higher learning. The prime movers were William Tryon, Judge R. E. B. Baylor, James Huckins, and Morrell. Their dream was realized in the chartering of a new college by the Republic of Texas on February 1, 1845. Baylor wanted it to be named in honor of Tryon (UT?), but the laer deferred since his was the loudest voice in favor of the new school. No name was inserted into the charter unl the final draſt was submied to the Republic. Baylor University is the longest connuously operang university in our state and the largest Bapst university in the world. More than a century later (1960) UBA would establish another college—Houston Bapst University. The Union Bapst Associaon will celebrate its birthday with a special service at Houston’s First Bapst Church on October 11 at 7:00 pm. Brenda and I will be aending this celebraon, and all of you are invited as well. Happy Birthday, UBA! Your Pastor Dr. Ron Lyles

HAPPY 175TH BIRTHDAY TO

UNION BAPTIST ASSOCIATION

Our church is a cooperative member of the Union Baptist Association, the group of Baptist churches in Harris County. As you know, everything is bigger in Texas, and UBA is the largest Baptist association in the whole world.

The earliest missionary (distinguished from anti-missionary or hardshell) Baptist work in Texas is attributed to Z. N. Morrell. While he was a Baptist pastor in Tennessee, his doctor diagnosed him with “consumption of the lungs” (tuberculosis) and encouraged him to move to a drier climate. In 1840 a call went out to gather at that church in June for the purpose of organizing an association. Some 25 representatives met there, but division between missionary and anti-mission sentiment prevented its success. The host pastor, T. W. Cox, flatly refused any compromise with the “hardshells.” Cox summoned another group that met in October of that same year at the Travis church (south of Brenham). Morrell was sympathetic to this work but was ill and could not attend. Eleven messengers came from three churches—Travis, Independence, and LaGrange. The Student Ministry is flourishing and heading into the Fall with full

force! It’s exciting to see God work in the lives of our students as they continue to grow in Christ and bring their friends to our activities as well. Promotion Sunday was a great success and such a blessing for our church, as new students and teachers alike joined our ranks. The future is encouraging as we look to several exciting events planned for our youth! October is full of ministry opportunities including a Toby Mac concert on October 3, and our much anticipated Youth Tailgate Worship Service on October 21 to name a few! In November we look forward to youth evangelist, Ken Freeman, coming to speak to our students over a weekend event! Our Wednesday night Youth Service has a new name, “Ricochet,” as we look for God’s Word and the truth of Christ to ricochet and spread to and from all of us! Continue to pray for our Youth! Our College and Career Ministry also has several exciting events planned for October, and our prayer is to see this ministry continue to grow in their walk with Christ as well. The Bible study series “Movies & Ministry” will continue into the Fall as we uncover and explore God’s truths in popular movies of yesterday and today! I appreciate all of the adult workers who so faithfully support the College and Career Ministry. We’ve added a new look to our room and aren’t finished with it yet! We’re now the proud owners of our very own popcorn making machine! We will continue to meet each Tuesday Night from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. To God be the glory, and may He continue to bless the Student Ministry here at South Main Baptist Church! In His service, Brian

We are in the middle of this Sunday school emphasis. Classes and Departments have grouped into 8 teams that are led by Ministry Leadership Team members. You are needed to help your team. Join a class if you haven’t already or attend Sunday school each week to boost your team into the lead. You can also invite others to attend. If they attend, points will be awarded. Points will also be given for making contacts (and reporting those contacts) which will give your team momentum. More information is on our website. The leading team will be revealed in a video during the following Sunday Worship Service.

TRUNK OR TREAT - All Sunday School groups are encouraged to enter a car, truck, wagon, etc. in the Trunk or Treat event. NOTICE! The date has been changed to Friday, October 30. This has always been an outstanding event for our community.

We are recruiting Outreach (Visiting) Teams to launch our new outreach visitation program. Beginning in October we will need many teams to be available on Sunday mornings. This will be the easier part of the ministry. This team will take an outreach packet (“Hot and Spicy”) and leave it on the front door of a family who attended South Main for the first time. The second team we are recruiting is the Follow-up Team. This

group will make a 2-5 minute front step visit to each one of the families who received a bag that morning. We are hoping to get information into the homes quickly and be available for any questions they might have. If you would like to be a part of either of these teams, contact me soon at [email protected]. BETH MOORE SIMULCAST - Thank you to Barbara Gillies and her amazing team for making this a superb ministry event. We look forward to other big events.

Plans are almost complete for decorating the front of the church for the Christmas season. I am looking for a dozen people who enjoy woodworking, painting, hanging lights, etc.

Jeff Fuqua

Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in

mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Ephesians 6:18 Someone told me recently, “We prayed for you today.” I said, “Really?” She replied, “Yes, specifically, by name, we prayed for you.” I always have known my mom prays for me and that is so reassuring and gives me the boost I have come to rely on. But to know someone I barely know is praying for me is an indescribable feeling. I truly feel like I am being supported in my work and the ministry I participate in. So thank you for telling me you lifted my name to our Father. I am truly grateful and humbled that you would pray for me. If you pray for someone, once-in-a-while or regularly, let them know. It’s inspiring! Kelley

All our choirs and ensembles are off and running. As I put these thoughts together, we are in final preparation for our special evening of music, “Let The Children Sing.” I hope you were able to come and enjoy it. We will continue working on anthems to share with you on various Sundays in October and also begin preparation on our Christmas music for December. It’s not too late to join a choir. Children’s choirs meet on Wednesdays at 6 p.m., Youth choir grades 7-12 meets on Sundays at 4:30 p.m., and Adult choir meets on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. If you are an instrumentalist, be sure to let us know what instrument you play. We have wonderful opportunities for you to join us on Sundays and Wednesdays. Looking forward to worshipping with you this Fall, Bobie
