There are several reasons given for the mitzvah of Mishloach Manos

(sending food gifts) on Purim Firstly the mitzvah of Mishloach Manos is

designed to enable Jews to enjoy fulfilling the Mitzva of having a Purim

meal Gifts of prepared food are sent on the day of Purim in order to en-

sure that all people have the means to enjoy a lavish feast According to

this reason it is necessary for the recipient to accept the Mishloach Manos

and not merely for the donor to extend the gift

Another reason for Mishloach Manos is based upon the fact that

the Jews of Shushan transgressed the laws of Kashrus by partaking in non

-kosher food served at King Achasveroshrsquos banquet To demonstrate that

they had truly repented from this sin the mitzvah of Mishloach Monos was

inaugurated By sending food gifts one to another Jews demonstrated

their mutual trust in matters of Kashrus As in the case of the first reason

it is therefore imperative that the recipient accept and not merely that the

donor extend the gift

Finally the sending of Mishloach Manos is to dispel the image of

the Jewish People as a ldquoscattered and dis-unified peoplerdquo depicted by the

wicked Hamen By exchanging gifts on the holiday of Purim the Jews

demonstrate the strong bonds of friendship and love which truly exist

among themselves Unlike the prior reasons this third reason would not

necessitate the receipt of the gift but merely its extension as that would be

a sign of friendship in and of itself

MISHLOACH MANOS

Reading the Megillah

Both men and women should hear the reading of the Megilah (Book of Esther) and also perform the other Purim mitzvos which include send-ing gifts of food giving to the poor and eating the Purim meal It is cus-tomary to bring young children to the synagogue to hear the Megilah but they should be prevented from making a disturbance except for when Hamenrsquos name is read Those who are unable to go to the synagogue

should have the Megilah read to them from a kosher parchment scroll

Sending of Food Parcels Misloach Manos

On Purim day (and not at night) men and women should send to a friend at least one gift containing two kinds of food or drink This mitzvah may be ful-filled only with ready-to-eat food food needing preparation money clothing or other gifts do not qualify Although one is required to send only one parcel it is cus-tomary to encourage joy friendship and brotherly love and send parcels to many friends Nevertheless it is of greater mer-it to distribute gifts generously to the poor than to distribute food to friends There is no greater joy before G-d than the hap-piness of the unfortunate It is therefore incumbent on us to aid the disadvantaged with an open hand

It is preferable that the gift be sent with someone else and not delivered per-sonally A person in mourning should send a gift to one person only

Gifts to the Poor - Matanos Lrsquoevyonim

All men women and even those on the dole must give gifts to the poor on Purim The minimum requirement is to give gifts to at least two poor per-sons Those who are liberal with their giving on Purim will be blessed Where there are no poor the gifts should be set aside on Purim and dis-tributed when the occasion arises

The Purim Feast Seudas Purim

Everyone joins together to re-joice in G-drsquos saving grace and in His miracles that were performed both in times of old and in our own days We enjoy as lavish a meal as we can afford and drink good wine ldquoKreplachrdquo and Hamentashenrdquo are among the traditional Purim foods The reason for the wine drinking is that it recalls the seminal events of the Purim story which occurred during ldquoBanquet of Wine Hamen-tashen and Kreplach contain a hidden treat inside the dough This symbolizes the nature of the miracles occur-ring in the Purim story They were hidden miracles masked by seemingly natural events

SPECIAL PURIM MITZVAHS

WHY HALLEL IS NOT RECITED ON PURIM

Hallel is actually a collection of six chapters taken from the book of

Psalms written by King David They are recited following the Shachris

Amidah on the holidays of Pesach Shavuos and Sukkos as well as on

Chanukah During the Talmudic period it became customary to recite

the Hallel on Rosh Chodesh in an abridged form

Hallel is recited as a joyous response to G-drsquos wonderful miracles

and powers of salvation However it is not recited on the holiday of Pu-

rim despite the fact that it appears to be most appropriate This question

is discussed in the Talmud (Tractate Megilah) and there are several an-

swers given

Purim commemorates an event which occurred outside Eretz Yisra-

el namely Persia Thus Hallel is not recited since it is said only for mir-

acles that take place in Eretz Yisrael

Another reason offered is that the special reading of Megillas Esther

containing the story of Purim is equivalent to the recital of Hallel and

therefore the reciting of the Hallel is not necessary

Finally a third reason is cited to the effect that the reciting of Hallel

on Purim would not be appropriate While it is true that the Jews experi-

enced a miraculous salvation on Purim resulting in a cause for celebra-

tion their freedom was not complete for they still remained subservient

to a foreign ruler as subjects of King Achashvarosh Hallel is appropri-

ately recited only after a complete deliverance ndash one that results in our

being solely ldquoservants of G-drdquo

A LETTER FROM OUR VICE PRESIDENT

January 2015

Dear Friends

Over 33 centuries ago Moshe Rabeinu (Moses our teacher) wrote the first Torah and presented it to the Jewish people A Torah Scroll is our holiest and most cherished artifact The Jewish people have lived by the Torah and due to persecution died for it When Jews came to these shores they brought their Torahrsquos with them The Torahs which we read from are an integral part of Synagogue Ser-vices

At Congregation Brsquonai Torah we have Sifrei Torah that are likely more than a century old but because of age are no longer able to be used It is time for us to acquire a new Sefer Torah and to this end we have commis-sioned a Scribe in Jerusalem to write a new Torah

It will take around a year for the scribe to complete his work and we an-ticipate that the new Torah will be completed this upcoming spring

We invite you to participate in this mitzvah (obligation) by taking ad-vantage of the dedication opportunities listed in the enclosed brochure By dedicating a part of the Sefer Torah you will become a partner in the honor of the mitzvah of writing a Torah and help the acquisition of the holiest object that will be used regularly

Page 3: Happy Purim Shofar.pdf · 2015. 2. 10. · Happy Purim! There are several reasons given for the mitzvah of Mishloach Manos (sending food gifts) on Purim. Firstly, the mitzvah of Mishloach

Spring of 2015

TORAH DEDICATION

Spring of 2015

Sincerely Yours

Barry Pakula

Sincerely Yours

Barry Pakula

Chairman Sefer Torah Campaign Vice President Brsquonai Torah
