In this activity, students need to remember:

Use uni-fix cubes, coloured counters, different pasta shapes or

create a diagram to show the following fractions:

e.g. 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, 4/5, 5/5 as 1 whole

Explore the concept of fractions up to a whole. Try with another

example of fractions leading up to one whole, e.g. 1/6, 2/6, 3/6,

4/6, 5/6, 6/6 as 1 whole

Extension: One-third of a class order lunches from the canteen each day. How many students might be in the class or how many of them order lunches each day?

Watch the video ‘What does health mean?’ and write down a

definition of health in your own words. What does being healthy

mean to you?

Read each scenario on the sheet Who is Healthy? and rank each

one from poor to excellent. After completing the activity, think

about the following questions:

• What are the factors in each case study that are healthy

and unhealthy?

• Why do people have different viewpoints about what is

healthy?

• Can a disabled person in a wheelchair be healthy?

• Can a person with asthma be healthy?

Watch the video ‘Making connections’ and think about what does ‘making connections’ mean when you are reading? Write a 2-3 sentences explain your opinion. Read the text ‘Making a sandwich’. What do you think about when you read this text? Do you make connections to what they eat or make at home? Write a paragraph on your connection when you read the text. Start your paragraph with ‘When I read the text ‘How to make a sandwich’ I thought about… Have someone at home read your connection and give feedback to the connection and your writing. E.g. correct any errors or I can see how you have connected your ideas. If you can, record yourself explaining your connection and upload your video onto Google Classroom!

up by. Do you see the pattern?

Do you think you can make up some of your own fractions and

continue the activity? Remember when you make your own

fraction, we need the top number (numerator) to be smaller than

the bottom number (denominator). Like ½, the top number is

smaller than the bottom number. This is called a proper fraction.

Keeping a beat

Play ‘KNEE CLAP CLICK CLICK’

Play this game with someone or all the people in your family.

Watch the video to learn how to play the game

Sit in a circle together.

Tap your knees once, clap your hands once and click with your right

hand, then with your left.

Practice this until you are keeping a regular beat going.

Continue to tap and click, and with each beat say ‘my name

is…..and I like……’ Eg. My name is Peter and I like music, my name is

Niasha and I like dancing…’

Each person has a turn, going around the circle. Try to keep the

beat going as you each have a turn.

Repeat the sequence as many times as you like.

If you can, upload a video on Google Classrooms of you and your

family doing this activity.

If you can’t upload a video – take a photo of you doing the activity

and upload that instead.

Revising previous lesson:

Order these fractions from smallest to largest

Activity 1:

Order these fractions from smallest to largest.

Remember our rule: If the top numbers (numerator) are the same, we can

compare fractions by looking at how big or small the bottom (denominator)

is. The bigger the denominator, the smaller the fraction because it means

that the fraction is cut up into smaller parts.

1/3, ½, ¼, 1/5, 1/6, 1/7, 1/8, 1/10, 1/15, 1/30, 1/100

Activity 2:

Do you think you can make up some of your own fractions and continue the

activity? You can make your fraction as complicated as you like. The bottom

number (denominator) can be any number. The top number (numerator)

must be the same number.

Reasoning:

Write down or draw a picture to explain how you worked out which fraction

was the smallest or largest. Provide reasoning or examples for your answers.

Extension:

Order these fractions from smallest to largest. In this activity, the bottom

number (denominator) is not the same so we can’t use the rule we have

learnt from above. Use a ruler to draw out your fraction strips and compare

how each fraction.
