Harrington Public School ISSUE 7 | TERM 2 – WEEK 7 | 12 th June 2020 Principal’s Report Students have settled back into school routine so well this term and I’m extremely proud of all their efforts. It’s hard to believe that we’re coming into Week 8 and nearly half way through the year! Pending decisions made by NSW Health and the Department of Education, I think we’re all looking forward to being able to go ahead with all our extra-curricular activities in Terms 3 and 4. Community Member Sadly, last week Harrington lost a well-known and valued community member Adam Nixon who was the publican at the Harrington Hotel. I know that numerous parents and students knew Adam and have been deeply impacted by his passing. On behalf of the school, staff and students I just wanted to take this opportunity to pass on our condolences to Adam’s family and friends and let them know we are thinking of them. 2021 Enrolments If you are enroling a student at Harrington Public School in 2021 please contact the Front Office as soon as possible to ensure you are in the school zone. Vegetable Garden Hopefully over the coming weeks when COVID-19 social distancing requirements are lifted, the Lions Club will be able to start our very much anticipated vegetable garden just in time for Spring! Community Building Partnership 2020 The P&C, in joint partnership with C2Hills, have recently applied for $16,960 through the ‘Community Building Partnership 2020’ Grant. If successful, this grant will be used to further support the construction and landscaping of the school’s vegetable garden which is being built by the Lions Club.

ISSUE 7 | TERM 2 – WEEK 7 | 12th June 2020

Principal’s Report Students have settled back into school routine so well this term and I’m extremely proud of all their efforts.

Vegetable Garden Hopefully over the coming weeks when COVID-19 social distancing requirements are lifted, the Lions Club will be able

to start our very much anticipated vegetable garden just in time for Spring!

Community Building Partnership 2020

The P&C, in joint partnership with C2Hills, have recently applied

for $16,960 through the ‘Community Building Partnership 2020’

Grant. If successful, this grant will be used to further support the

construction and landscaping of the school’s vegetable garden

which is being built by the Lions Club.

New Gardening Equipment Recently the school purchased new gardening equipment for all of the students. This includes rakes, gloves, watering cans and small shovels etc. Each fortnight for 20 minutes on Friday afternoons the entire school eagerly chips in to make our school look amazing!

COVID-19 Update Please refer to our Facebook page and website for the latest information from the

Department of Education regarding COVID-19.

Additional Teacher Over the past few weeks we have been lucky to have a new casual teacher for two

days a week. Miss Shields was appointed to Harrington Public School by the

Department of Education to help support our students during COVID-19. We are

extremely grateful for the way she has built such a strong rapport with both the

staff and students in such a short amount of time and helped out in the classrooms.

Thank you Miss Shields!

Camps At our last P&C meeting we spoke about our upcoming Stage 2 and Stage 3 camps. Unfortunately we haven’t been able

to hold our annual fundraisers this year which would normally help subsidise the cost of camps. In addition, current

camp restrictions in place by the Department along with additional financial pressures placed on families have resulted

in the school looking at creative ways to still hold a camp for our students. Further details will be provided when they

are available.

New iPads We have recently purchased 10 brand new iPads for the Kindergarten,

Year 1 and 2 students to use during Reading and Maths Groups. iPads

are a great tool for students to use to further support their learning.

New Furniture Aqua room have recently acquired some beautiful new furniture to complement their flexible learning environment. I know the teachers and students are extremely excited with their new tables, seats, and a booth!

Resolution Room We have launched our new Resolution Room!

What is the Resolution Room?

Students who are experiencing behaviour difficulties either in the

classroom or playground will be nominated by a teacher to attend the

Resolution Room during Break 1. There, they will be working with either

Mrs Gonzalez or Mrs Burrows to reflect on their behaviour and work

towards learning better ways in which they can demonstrate Respect,

Responsibility and Personal Best to help them get back on track. This will be explained in greater detail at our next P&C

meeting on 22nd June.

3 Way Conferences Three way conferences have been rescheduled and will occur in Week 9 of Term 2. Important information regarding accessing our school’s Parent Portal has been emailed to families this week. This will allow parents and carers to log in and schedule their 3 Way Interview. More details will be sent home shortly - if you did not receive the initial email or if you have any questions about accessing the Parent Portal, please contact the School Office on 6556 1267. Take care, and stay safe, Paul Haste Principal

News

Student News YELLOW ROOM by Mia This week we have been learning to predict, make connections and ask thick and thin questions. We have also been learning to skip count by tens and add by tens. We played bingo, and add two numbers together. BLUE ROOM by Finn and Hayden This term we have been focusing on the Gold Rush and a book called “My Place”. Aqua room have entered the My Place Competition, where each student has submitted a writing piece. Did you know the Gold Rush hit 15 places in Australia? RAINBOW ROOM by Billie and Alyssa We have been learning about Australian animals. This week we learnt about emus. Emus can run, but they can’t fly. Emus can grow up to two metres high and they are soft and feathery.

SOCIAL DISTANCING PROCEDURES FOR VISITING THE SCHOOL OFFICE DURING COVID-19

We would like to thank our families for their patience and respect for the social distancing practices at our school.

We again remind everyone to please ensure only one adult/family is in reception area at any one time.

PURPLE ROOM by Dakota and Isaac This term we have been reading about Australian people. The last book we read was Nellie Melba. She was a little girl and her dad was strict and he didn’t want her to sing. She became a famous Australian opera singer. We have also learnt about Nancy Bird Walton who was the youngest female pilot in Australia. She grew up in Kew which is not far from Harrington. Another famous Australia story was The Royal Flying Doctors. They were created by Reverend John Flynn who wanted to help people get medical help in the outback. The Royal Flying Doctors are still going today with about 66 airplanes in Australia. GREEN ROOM by Calista and Stephanie This term Aqua Room have been creating majestic mosaic art pieces. Most of the pieces have been successfully completed, although some are still being worked on. We really enjoyed making wonderful artworks so we hope we do it again.

Lost Property There is an ever increasing pile of lost property at the school office – jumpers, shorts, shirts, drink bottles and food containers. If your child is missing any of the above items, please have them call into the office.

School Fees Thank you to those families who have already paid their school fees for 2020. We are currently asking families to show their support by finalising their school fee payment for 2020. Your school fee contributions are greatly appreciated and go towards purchasing a variety of resources including: paints, glue sticks, pencils etc. If you haven’t already done so, please send your school fees in to the front office.
