Harrington Public School ISSUE 10 | TERM 2 – WEEK 7 | 12 June 2019 Principal’s Report It’s been an extremely busy term for our staff who have been working tirelessly on Semester 1 reports - working late at night and during the weekends. As a principal I can’t thank them enough, as I know, from experience, just how much work goes into them. Reports are a valuable reflection of your child’s current knowledge, skills and understandings across key subjects and most importantly their attitude and application towards learning. Reports will be sent home Wednesday, 3 July. In addition, over the past two weeks we have seen a number of our staff participating in teacher professional learning, not only increasing their capacity but supporting our students development in and outside the classroom. Such learning has included Science and Technology, Literacy and Numeracy strategies and 21 st Century Learning looking at the latest in technology and coding. Mrs Lockey and Ms Smith have been practising with their dance groups during lunch, and I must say that I’m extremely proud as a principal watching them preparing for next week’s Dance Festival held at the Glasshouse in Port Macquarie. Thank you to all of the parents for their flexibility last week in relation to the Athletics Carnival being rescheduled. We certainly had our fair share of icy winds and rain! The Athletics Carnival was re-scheduled for today. It’s great to see so many students wearing their school jumpers during these cooler months. Just a reminder to students to remember to either wear or pack their jumper (or even a singlet underneath their school shirt) as the weather can quickly turn cool throughout the day. Over the past few weeks Megan and Scott Saunders and David Martin have worked very hard organising our sports shed and installing new shelving. All their work is greatly appreciated as the students will now be able to easily access equipment. As you may have noticed, quite a few students have started to contribute recounts of past school functions/events in our fortnightly school newsletter. We hope you enjoy reading some of their work. I know lots of students have been eagerly waiting for their work to be published! If you haven’t already done so, please return the canteen volunteer slip if you are available to support our P&C canteen. Without volunteers we just wouldn’t be able to provide a service for our students. Paul Haste

Principal’s Report

It’s been an extremely busy term for our staff who have been working tirelessly on Semester 1 reports - working late at night and during the weekends.

Such learning has included Science and Technology, Literacy and Numeracy strategies and 21st Century Learning looking at the latest in technology and coding.

What’s been happening at Harrington PS?

Cinema Under The Stars Approximately 100 parents, children and family members turned up for our Cinema Under the Stars family night which truly reflected our school’s strong sense of community and school spirit. A huge shout out to Chris Simon from Optus who supplied the truck and widescreen television. Without his support, nights like this just wouldn’t be possible. Thank you also to all of those who helped out in the canteen and provided lots of yummy winter warmers and tasty snacks. A special thanks to our staff who helped out with all the organisation both before and on the night.

On Friday, 31st May we watched the movie Coco for cinema under the stars. We got hot dogs and cheeseburgers for dinner. The canteen was also selling popcorn, lollies and choc tops with chocolate topping and sprinkles. Everyone had a great time and everyone bought their blankets and jumpers because it was very cold.

Drama On Friday, 31st May four students including myself went to a Drama Eisteddfod at the Manning Entertainment Centre. When we arrived we took our seats and watched many acts before we went on. Then it was our time to shine. They gave us a topic and we had one and a half minutes to prepare. Our topic was “Surprise Party” and we nailed it. Then we went back to school.

Athletics Carnival We didn’t go to the Athletics carnival on Tuesday because there was a storm. It made me sad because I didn’t get to do long jump but it’s okay because it’s after the weekend.

Hunter Cross Country What a super effort Gemma! On Friday 31st May, Gemma attended the Hunter Cross Country at Newcastle. It was cold, however, she did us proud as she sped around the 3km track, placing third. We wish Gemma all the best at State Cross Country in Term 3.

Public Speaking On Tuesday, 11th June two students, Isaac and Gemma from Stage 3 and two students, Cali and Issy from Stage 2 travelled to Taree Public School for the Small Schools Public Speaking Competition. All students presented their prepared multicultural speeches. Followed by an impromptu speech. All students did an amazing job and should be proud of their efforts. Congratulations to Calista for placing runner-up in Stage 2 division and to Gemma for placing first in the Stage 3 division. They will now proceed to the local finals at Tinonee Public School. Well Done all!

Girls Soccer Gala Day

On Friday, 7th June some of our students had the opportunity to participate in the Girls Soccer Gala Day. The day is based around team work and building skills in a non-competitive environment. They did really well scoring the most points in 2 out of 4 games and by game four were spreading out and passing the ball to all team members.

GaTS Congratulations to Gemma Eady-Muxlow who has been accepted into the Sports Science Gifted and Talent camp in the last week of July. We have never had a student previously attend this camp, so we are very proud and excited to see the program. Have a wonderful time Gemma! Visiting Author On Wednesday, 19th June the students will be given the opportunity to meet Aleesah Darlison, an internationally known children’s author. Aleesah will be visiting the school to read and interact with our students. We are excited to see what Mrs Darlison has planned for her visit.

Lower North Coast Dance Festival Next Wednesday, 19th June we will be entering two dance groups into the Lower North Coast Dance Festival. Years 1-2 will be performing Doo Dah and Years 3-6 will be performing Waka Waka, limited tickets are still available. We suggest calling the Glasshouse to purchase tickets as we have been advised by some parents that the online site seems to be having some issues.
