Junior Miranda Parker got a little closer to achieving her dreams of performing on Broadway when she was selected to be a part of the 50th Anniversary KIDS from Wisconsin Troupe. "There are former KIDS who are now working in New York and on Broadway. This is a great opportunity for me," Parker said. Parker auditioned with performers from all over the state of Wisconsin. "We had to sing and dance, but they were also con- cerned with how quickly we could apply corrections," said Parker. She said she received advice from two local KIDS alumni about the audition process. "Dani (Kuepper) and Jeff (Brewer) told me to be confident and to show personality." Former KIDS Kuepper (88,89,90) and Brewer (89,90) are invited back to the alumni cel- ebration at the Wisconsin State Fair in August. In their 50th season, the KIDS will have performed for approximately ten million across Wisconsin and the Midwest, with great entertainment by some of Wisconsin's most talented performers ages 15-20. The revue is produced in collaboration with some of the best writers, arrangers, and choreographers across the country. The KIDS will celebrate all summer from June 21- August 18, in over 35 hometowns across the state and twice daily at the Wisconsin State Fair, as they mark a mile- stone 50th year of performing and molding professional performers. "We will be featuring all the great music since KIDS started," stated Parker. This year’s show theme, "Shine the Light," will feature music performed since the incep- tion of the Kids from Wisconsin. Some of the KIDS all-time audience favorites will be featured along with five0 decades of Broadway. KIDS will Shine the light on our past 50 years while lighting the way for the next 50. "I’m most excited about perform- ing the top hits from Broadway from the past 50 years." The establishment of the group was authorized in 1968 by Douglas G. Weiford, (1968 Secretary of the Department of Local Affairs and Development), in keeping with Governor Warren P. Knowles’ "Youth Power Program." The Wisconsin Exposition Center Music director, Mark S. Azzolina, was appointed by Vernon G. Wendland, (Administrator of the Wisconsin Exposition Center) as the special project official. Since their organization in 1968 and first per- formance in 1969, the Kids from Wisconsin show troupe has performed at state and county fairs, festivals, national trade shows and conventions. Parker recalled, "I remem- ber seeing the KIDS perform at the Wisconsin State Fair when I was about 10. I loved it and told my mom that I wanted to do that!" Parker has trained in dance at All the Above Dance Company in West Bend, and has spent her summers studying dance with the Milwaukee Ballet, Inaside Dance Company in Chicago, and last summer she was chosen to work with the world famous Rockettes. Parker would consider herself a dancer first, but she has worked to hone her vocal skills as well. "I will definitely need to work harder on the vocal aspects for these performanc- es, but I am going to learn so much from this experience," Parker said. She is a mem- ber of the HUHS Concert Choir and takes vocal lessons from Stephanie Klockow and Sue Andereck. Every KID has a hometown show as the troupe travels throughout Wisconsin. Parker’s hometown show will be at the Schauer Arts Center in Hartford on July 25 at 7pm. In early 2012, the U.S. Centers forDisease Control and Prevention issuedfindings from a study that found 1 in 88children is now diagnosed with autismspectrum disorder by the age of eight. This is a 23 percent increase in ASD diag-noses in just two years. What troublesdoctors is that the rate has risen farabove the 2006 estimate of 1 in 110.

The National Institute of NeurologicalDisorders and Stroke says that ASDincludes a range of complex neurodevel-opmental disorders, characterized bysocial impairment, communication diffi-culties, and restricted, repetitive, andstereotyped patterns of behavior.Children with ASD can have difficultieslearning what are typically simple lessonsfor other children. Although ASD variesin severity, the common thread is that itoccurs in all ethnic groups and affectsevery age. Males are four times more like-ly to have ASD than females.

Doctors do not understand whyautism rates have risen so profoundly.

Some believe that a broader definition ofautism is fueling these growing numbers.Diagnostic criteria has changed, and ASDis now encompassing conditions thatweren't first included under the autismbanner. Currently, ASD is classified intothe following subsets.

Pervasive developmental disorders(not otherwise specified, or PDD-NOS):These are a large group of disorders char-acterized by delays in communicationand socialization skills. Children mayvary in their abilities, intelligence andbehaviors. A PDD is typically diagnosedby age three.

Asperger's syndrome (AS): AS is adevelopmental disorder that includesrepetitive routines or rituals, peculiari-ties in speech and language, such asspeaking in a formal manner or mono-tone, socially and emotionally inappro-priate behavior and the inability tointeract with peers, clumsy motor move-

ments, and problems with nonverbalcommunication. Unlike children withautism, children with AS retain theirearly language skills, but their conditionmay be realized due to motor develop-ment delays, says the National Institutesof Health.

Autism disorder (AD): Also known asclassical autism, those with this diagno-sis often have the most severe form ofASD. Characteristics of this disorderinclude repetitive movements, self-abu-sive behavior, inability to speak or com-municate, failure to play with other chil-dren, and no smiling or social responsive-ness. Many with AD have restricted pat-terns of interest that are abnormal inintensity or focus.

Because children are placed on theautism spectrum at different severities, autism in general is quite a broad term -- and only seems to be getting broader. Therefore, net ASD includes more and

more children who may not have beendiagnosed with ASD in the past.Increasingly, doctors and specialists havea better understanding of behaviors andsymptoms indicative of ASD, whichmeans more children have the potentialfor an ASD diagnosis than in the past. These are just some of the factors con-tributing to why autism rates seem to begrowing.

According to Autism Speaks, just afew years ago little was known about thecauses of autism. Now it is known thatthere is no one cause of autism, just asthere is no one type. Scientists recentlyidentified a number of rare geneticchanges, or mutations, associated withautism. Many cases, however, seem to bea combination of genetics and environ-mental influences during early braindevelopment. The organization also notesthat the clearest evidence of theseautism risk factors involves events beforeand during birth. They include advancedparental age at the time of conception(both of mom and dad), maternal illnessduring pregnancy and certain difficultiesduring birth, particularly those involvingperiods of oxygen deprivation to thebaby's brain. These factors don't causeautism, but they can contribute to it.

Autism spectrum disorder affectsmore than one million children in theUnited States alone. Mark Roithmayer, president of AutismSpeaks, says thatautism should officially be considered anepidemic in the United States. Ongoingresearch and customized treatmentoptions remain the best opportunities for

Dear Dr. Winter, I need to have an implant restoredbut the dentist I saw said that it can’t be restored it hasto be removed. Is this something you can do? Can yougive me a second opinion as to whether it can be savedand if it needs removal can you do this?

Dear Maria, yes, I can give you a second opinionand if the implant needs to be removed, I can removeit. If your implant has failed, there are several possiblereasons for its failure. It can fail because of peri-implantitis which is like periodontitis or gum disease. The bone can be lost from around the implant due tobacteria, chewing forces, smoking, diabetes, leftovercement around the implant and a host of other factorsthat can contribute to failure of a titanium implant.

The implant can also fail if it is placed improperly orin the wrong position. So, failure to plan the implant’slocation can also become an obstacle to properrestoration.

We can give you a second opinion and a CBCT orCAT scan of the area that may be required to see theimplant in 3 dimensions to best diagnose the problem. There is a fee for this type of second opinion as itrequires x-rays and time, but we can certainly come upwith an assessment as to what went wrong to try andavoid these issues going forward.

Dear Dr. Winter, I would like to know the differencebetween a Snap-on- denture and a bar overdenture. Ihave heard these are less expensive than the permanentimplant teeth and am not sure of the benefits to thesetreatments.

Dear Renee, a bar-overdenture is an excellentprosthesis as there is a bar that splints the implantstogether. So, if you have 4, 5 or 6 implants or more anda bar is made to connect these implants they are rigidlyconnected, and they reinforce each other. Making amilled bar and the metal superstructure that fits in thedenture that snaps over the bar adds cost to thetreatment for this extra reinforcement and support, butit is a very comfortable and cleansable prosthesis. ASnap-on-denture or Locator denture is a denture thatsnaps on to each individual implant via a male andfemale attachment. These come from differentmanufacturers and are of different design but they allwork by clipping a denture directly on to a snap that

has been screwed and torqued into the implant. These are less costly and if the bone is of sufficient

quality and the implants are well-integrated this is acomfortable prosthesis that is also very easilycleaned. The difference usually comes down tomoney. If you can make an investment to have a baroverdenture it is better, in my opinion, than a denturethat goes to each individual implant due to forcedistribution. It is like breaking a pencil versus gluing5 together as they are much stronger. A bar is like aglue holding the implants together. If someone canafford a bar-overdenture they are very close in priceto having a fixed bridge on implants so that shouldalso be part of your discussions! Please visitwww.hamptondentalassociates.com to learn moreabout Snap-on dentures, bar-overdentures andimplant bridges!
