HARVEST OF THE MONTH ID SHEET: Oranges Oranges are round citrus fruits that have a pulpy sweet flesh surrounded by an

orange peel. Orange trees are the most commonly grown fruit tress in the

world.

A navel orange is a special variety of orange with a partially formed

undeveloped fruit located at the blossom end of the fruit. From the outside, the blossom end is looks like

a human navel, leading to the common name of “navel orange.” This orange varietal is the result of a

mutation that occurred on a plantation in Brazil in 1820. The navel orange is seedless, with a sweet and

juicy flesh.

A mandarin is a group name for a class of oranges. Tangerines are a type of mandarin, and a

clementine is a type of tangerine (very confusing)! Mandarins are easily peeled and some varieties have

seeds, while others do not! Mandarins were grown for over 3,000 years China before they made it to the

United States!

Clementines

• Clementines are a type of mandarin orange. They are a

cross between a sweet orange and a Chinese

mandarin.

• Another name for a clementine is Algerian tangerine.

The name “tangerine” refers to a variety of mandarins

with a deep, orange-red color.

• Clementines have a deep orange-red peel with sweet

and juicy flesh inside.

• Clementines grow in the U.S., Spain, Morocco, Italy,

Israel, Lebanon, and Turkey.

• California clementines are grown from November to

May.

• Clementines provide large quantity of vitamin C, just two clementines fulfill the daily requirement of

Vitamin C.

Cara Cara Oranges

• Cara Cara oranges are a type of navel orange that naturally

mutated from a common navel orange tree in Venezuela.

• They grow in the San Joaquin Valley in California from

December through April.

• They have a bright orange peel and a very pinkish red interior

similar to a grapefruit.

• Cara Cara oranges are usually very sweet and juicy.

• Cara Cara oranges are a good source of fiber, calcium, and

vitamin A: they help keep your bones and teeth healthy.

HARVEST OF THE MONTH-Orange Handling

Directions:

Storage: Oranges can either be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator, depending

upon your preference. They will generally last the same amount of time, two weeks with either

method, and will retain nearly the same level of their vitamin content. The best way to store oranges

is loose rather than wrapped in a plastic bag since if exposed to moisture, they can easily develop

mold.

Mandarin Handling Directions:

Mandarins and navel oranges can be baked or cooked, but they are commonly eaten raw. Fresh

citrus fruits are usually peeled and eaten as a snack. To serve your oranges, first peel off the skin,

and then separate the fruit into segments. If there are not enough segments for the entire class,

slice each segment in half. You can also slice the oranges, skin on, into 8 segments each.

How to Conduct a Mandarin Tasting:

1. Review Harvest of the Month Orange Fact Sheet

2. Create a presentation detailing:

a. Interesting Orange Facts

b. Orange History

c. Growth Cycle

3. Allow the students to see the oranges before they are cut up.

4. Ask students to think about the differences between each orange variety, taking into account

the differences in taste, smell, and appearance. Have students record or share their

observations.

5. Have class share their thoughts on why they like each variety.

6. Have class participate in one or more orange-related activities. Easy to implement activities

include: Poem Creation, Counting Activities, Seed Diagram Creation.

Will’s Avocados

Monterey and Ventura Counties

The Brokaw family has been growing avocados,

citrus and specialty tree fruits in California for

over 50 years. Their farms are mostly in Ventura

County, but they also have several farms in

southern Monterey County.

Hank and Ellen Brokaw started a backyard

avocado and citrus nursery as a side business to a

full-time teaching job in the mid-50s. They began

farming full time in the late-60s. Will Brokaw

took over the family business and now personally

manages all of their fruit.

In addition to their delicious avocados, the Brokaws

grow many types of citrus fruits. They grow

Clementine and Cara Cara Oranges as well as Gold

Nugget ("Pixie-like") mandarins. They also grow

guavas, mangos, kumquats, navel oranges, lemons and

limes! You can find their top quality citrus fruit at

local farmers' markets! Enjoy!
