The squad has been training for more than two months at Leschenault and Brunswick Ovals in preparation for the opening round blockbuster clash against Busselton on 16th April at Brunswick Oval. Relph said the group are enjoying their time on the track and looked forward to putting all their hard work into effect in Round 1. Weve got a great squad made up of many young and talented players Relph said. Theyve all got great skills and should shine when they take to the field”. Some of the girls have previously played football in their junior days before being enticed back to play with the formation of the SWFLW, and a few are even doubling up by playing Netball for HBL as well as football! Some familiar HBL names will be donning the mighty maroon and gold jumpers with the likes of Jeffery, Lucas and Relph running around on the oval, and certainly there will be a few more names that become synonymous with HBL Women s foot- ball over the coming years. Relph has not made any predictions for the season ahead but is quietly confident that the team will be able to beat any other side it comes up against - Im learning all the clichés as I go along but certainly we feel that we can beat any one on our day and well look to take it one game at a time and see how we finish up”.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL HERE IN 2017 Harvey-Brunswick Leschenault Women’s Coach Laura Relph says the team is eagerly awaiting the inaugural South West Football League Women’s season. “We’ve got a great squad made up of many young and talented players” Relph said. “They’ve all got great skills and should shine when they take to the field”. 2016 FAIREST & BEST AWARDS For the first time in HBL Football Club history the Sol Green Memorial Award for the

Fairest and Best went to 2 players, with Kristin Thornton and Eli Smith tied on 88 votes at

the end of voting. Runner Up Lloyd Beever was the early runaway leader but a mid-season

shoulder injury saw him being caught by the chasing pack. The final game saw an injured

Thornton fail to score any votes while Smith was one of the best players and saw him tie

up the leader board to create HBLFC history.

In the Reserves young gun Brendan Stemp was a convincing winner of the Jeffery Family

Medal with 106 votes, way ahead of Runner Up Lachlan Gray. Ever reliable defender

Keagan Fortescue was 3rd with inspirational Captain and leading goalkicker Matt Bicknell

finishing 4th. Star ruckman/forward Michael Gliddon’s 10th placing surprised the crowd,

many of whom had attended expecting Gliddon to push for the top Award.

Colts heartthrob Jake Currell was a deserving winner of the Joe Italiano Family Medal

with his consistent season seeing him receive 83 votes. Josh O’Day, who had also had an

outstanding season finished Runner Up while Colts Captain Jono Fenwick was 3rd. Tom

Boyle finished a disappointing 6th.

The night went for much longer than expected but was a great opportunity to recognise

those players who had performed well over the season along with appreciation for the

volunteers and helpers who did so much for the Club over the 2016 season. Special

mentions must go to Mr Doug Burns who was awarded the Ron Stewart Memorial Award

for his services to HBL since 2012 and prior to that with the Juniors and Sue Newman and

Jenny Sabourne who were each awarded Life Membership for their contributions to the

Club over many years.

Kristin Thornton (Left) and Eli Smith (Right) tied for the 2017 League Fairest and Best.

Brendan Stemp was a runaway winner in the Reserves.

Jake Currell’s strong form all season saw him win the Colts top award.

HILL RUN & CONVERSATIONS ON THE COUCH Friday the 25th February saw the annual Talbot Aerial Hill Run followed by the second edition of Conversations on the Couch with HBL’s 3 Senior Men’s Coaches. The Hill Run was as tough as ever but with a magnificent setting sun in the horizon it was certainly a beautiful setting. Young heartthrob and part-time model Bailey Taylor was the first runner home in an amazing time of 31 minutes, which old heads of the Club had only seen a few times before in the 80’s. Coming in second a few minutes behind Taylor was Jarrad Watson and finishing strongly for third was Corey Serravite, who managed to just to pip out veteran Stuart Germon. A number of first time runners were mentioned in the Awards, including new Coach Derek Hall’s son Zac, but the biggest cheer was reserved for last place finisher Adrian Triplett who fought through cramps and loss of control of bodily functions to finish in 1hr 45mins.

Following the Run the players and spectators enjoyed a barbecue put on by the Talbot family and then settled in to enjoy the 2nd edition of ‘Conversations on the Couch’. MC Mark Rando led the questioning of the three Coaches - Derek Hall, John Strano and Matt Stevens - with Derek giving his answer to the famous “Who is better - Gary Ablett Senior or Junior?”. John Strano even answered the more important question of “Who is the best Strano to play for HBL?” with wayward past player Chris Strano regarded as the worst.
