Dear Friends, Our Church of England #followthestar Christmas campaign concluded with an invitation to celebrate not only the beginning of the Christmas story but the end in an Epiphany service, joining the Wise of the nations who followed the Star of hope. Our Epiphany Star welcomed our primary children to reflect on the last of Jesus’ Nativity stories in Candlemas when the aged Simeon and Hannah rejoiced to see the light of God’s Salvation and the nation’s hope in the baby Jesus at his presentation in the Temple. So our primary children were thinking on times they had been to Christenings in this our day, the sorts of things elderly relatives would say in cooing over the baby being presented for Baptism celebrating their birth and future hopes, what gifts and talents might be revealed and nurtured in them. Our Lenten journey revisits the story of Jesus’ baptism after which He is led by the Holy Spirit into His own forty day wilderness journey of self-discovery. And so we, His followers today, follow after in our own journey of study and reflection as to how we may better follow his light in our lives and share his light with others. So the three churches of our benefice will be invited to share the Church of England Lent Pilgrim course, to reflect on the Light Jesus proclaimed, his purpose in fullness of life revealed through his Beatitudes, his Blessings. We are all invited to consider our hope for fullness of life and these days there are many ways to share Lent’s invitation to reflect on our purpose. #followthestar included an online resource with text messaging for each day’s theme, and now the Church has a new voice – Alexa. Yes, you can ask Amazon Alexa ‘Alexa, ask the Church of England….’ The Church of England Alexa skill seeks to increase users' knowledge of the Christian faith by answering questions such as: what is the Bible? Who is God? What is a Christian? Many of the answers draw on material from the Pilgrim discipleship course, from which our Lent reflections on the Beatitudes are taken. There are future plans for Google Home and Apple HomePod devices in due course, but there are already up and running a number of apps online for download, see:-

https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-and-worship/download-church-england-apps

However you choose to reflect this Lent, I pray we may all grow in knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, as is the hope of our fellowship’s blessing. All grace and blessing to you;- Brin. Parish Priest at Haughley with Wetherden and Stowupland. www.achurchnearyou.com

MARCH 2019 NEWSLETTERS As I pen these words in late January it is a time of great uncertainty in our personal lives and in the life of our country and I cannot predict what we shall face in March. But amidst the anxieties and the problems I hold on to the Christian hope that is ours in Christ Jesus if we look to him as our Saviour and our Lord.

Wednesday 6th March is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the forty days of Lent, a traditional time for self examination and renewed commitment to Jesus Christ. Some express this through abstinence from certain things, while others read a book they believe will spiritually challenge them and yet others join with fellow Christians in a Lent Study Group. At Stowmarket United Reformed Church we plan to run both a morning and evening five session Lent Group, using the ecumenical Lent Course “Daring to see God now” written by Bishop Nick Baines. Members of village churches are welcome to join us, but you may know of other Lent courses being run in your locality. What is important is that we each have a grasp of our Christian beliefs and can share our hope with others. By March I hope gardens and the countryside will be springing to life with flowers and birdsong, so we remember Jesus’ journey to the cross of Calvary was followed by his glorious resurrection from the dead. Lent can be an opportunity to meet with Jesus in a new way and experience his resurrection power at a deeper level.

If you are not a regular churchgoer but wish to find out more, all of our churches offer a welcome both at Sunday services and gatherings during the week.

Revd. Richard Edwards (Retired U.R.C. minister)

NEWS FROM YOUR MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCILLOR Mid Suffolk District Council Budget 2019/20: At February’s Council meeting it is proposed to agree a net budget of £13,060,000 funded partly by an increase in council tax of 2%. (This is despite there being a £1.9 million underspend in the current financial year and £2.4 million underspend in 2017/18.) Of the total budget, nearly half the amount is funded by Council Tax of £5,915,000 (45.3%), with a fifth funded by Business Rates of £2,615,000 (20%). Of your total Council Tax bill, approximately 10% goes to Mid Suffolk, about 12% to the Police and the remainder to Suffolk County Council. Tree for Life: In last year’s budget, the Administration allowed three of our Group’s policy ideas to be acted upon – and one of these is the “tree for life” policy, where any resident of Mid Suffolk could apply for a free fruit tree for any child born or adopted. So far this year 170 parents have successfully applied and the project will be extended into a second year making this one of the most successful tree initiatives in the country. Local Planning Issues: I attended the committee meeting on Wednesday 13th February where the decision was to be made about 149 homes at Haughley Park (no. DC/18/0392). The application was recommended to be refused due to “unsustainability” in line with the requirements of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). I spoke about this at the Committee and they unanimously agreed to refuse the application. District Councillor Rachel Eburne 01449 774 647 [email protected]

HAUGHLEY FESTIVAL NEWSLETTER

Less than 3 months to go, things are coming together, and the anticipation is building!! The Festival opens on Saturday 25th May with our traditional Flower Festival in the church. This runs through to Bank Holiday Monday 27th May. The theme for the flower arrangements is ‘Simple Pleasures’. If you are interested in arranging a display please contact Mary on 01449 614485. Alternatively (or possibly as well) you may wish to have an arrangement made on your behalf dedicated to, and in memory of a loved one for display in Memory Corner. If you would like to remember someone in this way please get in touch with Josephine on 01449 774657. Not only will there be beautiful flowers, there is plenty more to whet your appetite. Throughout this first weekend of the Festival there will be Live Music, Stalls, an Art Exhibition in the Maxwell Charnley room and an Exhibition in the Castle Room of the winning photos from the Festival Photo Competition. Plus, Palmers Bakery have very kindly agreed to sponsor a Festival Bake Off Competition - look out for posters on how to enter. Kenneth Palmer will be judging and awarding prizes to winners. And on the Sunday our canine friends have an opportunity to impress in The Dog Show. In this first weekend of the Festival we have two other special events. At 5pm on the Saturday we have a talk entitled The Adventures of Reg Willsher with the London Welsh Male Voice Choir including a miscellany of music recorded over the years by the choir. And at 5pm on the Sunday Haughley Choir is giving a “Road to Freedom” concert featuring music and readings. If you enjoy singing and are interested in joining in with the choir for this concert please do call Jane on 01449 775705 for more information. On Wednesday 29th May (which of course is during half term!) We have Family Festival Fun at Gallowsfield Wood. From 2 to 5pm we have “Be a Nature Detective - Bio Blitz”, suitable for all ages, and from 5 to 7pm there will be “Camp-Fire and BBQ” for which you are invited to bring your own marshmallows to toast on the fire. Burgers, hotdogs, tea, coffee and soft drinks will also be on sale. Watch out for the posters for these events. On Thursday 30th May we are delighted to report that we will be entertained, in the church, by The Kimberleys Folk Duo. They have played over the years with several eminent musicians including Gordon Giltrap who says “Essential listening. The Kimberleys take on traditional folk is stunning and original”. And there is more besides. Watch this space for further information about the Village Hall Dance on Saturday 1st June and the Big Sing planned for Sunday 2nd June. More information on all events including how and where to get tickets where applicable may be found on our website at www.haughleyfestival.org Sponsorship and Money - A big thank you to all businesses and individuals who have already offered sponsorship. If you haven’t been contacted yet and would like to be a Festival sponsor please contact Pip on 07791 504560. This year the money raised through the Festival will be split - 25% going to the MacMillan Cancer charity, and the remaining 75% going to the church to be spent as required for the Haughley Community: repairs and upkeep of the Post Office, the Maxwell Charnley Community Room, the church building, and providing funding as and when required to enable the Haughley Voluntary Service to continue to provide transport for those in our local community needing to attend doctor and hospital appointments. Best Wishes, Haughley Festival Group

WETHERDEN PARISH COUNCIL Notes from the Parish Council meetings held in January and February 2019

Resignation and elections: Sadly we heard of the resignation of Ivan Austin, so we are now down to 5 councillors. Elections will be held in May for all 7 places, so please consider standing for the council, and helping to shape the future of Wetherden. There are lots of changes which will affect the village, and a strong parish council can make a difference, being consulted on all local planning applications, and improving the facilities in the village for all. Nomination forms and further information can be obtained from me. The closing date for applications (which have to be handed in, not posted) is 4pm on Wednesday 4 April. To be eligible you have to live or work in Wetherden, or within 3 miles. District Councillor's report: It was lovely to see District Councillor Rachel Eburne back at the meeting. She updated us on the underspend by MSDC, which is £1.9m. The planning application for 149 homes at Haughley Park had been recommended for refusal, as it goes against the National Planning Policy Framework which emphasises sustainability. It was reported that the Tree for Life programme - planting a tree for each child that is born - will be continued, with 170 trees planted so far. County Councillor's report: Andrew Stringer updated us on SCC's budget cuts which will adversely affect rural bus services, Highways' treating of weeds, and the Citizens Advice Bureau (cut by £180k for next year, and to no support for following year). He reported that the Orwell Bridge project has been cancelled, and that there is a proposal to appoint, jointly with the NHS, a Director of Public Health. He also updated us on school transport, particularly the cost of special educational needs transport out of county. No further complaints have been received regarding Aggmax. It was agreed that the Facebook coverage of both this and the diverted traffic situation between Elmswell and Wetherden has been good. Village hall: John Donovan, of the village hall management committee, spoke of the requests for daytime use of the village hall by companies, which would be a useful source of income as the hall is little used in the daytime. To enable this, the hall needs updating in terms of its IT provision, such as a phone line, broadband, projector and stand, and screen. Following discussion it was agreed by all that £800 from the Parish council's Community Infrastructure Levy be spent on this equipment. Community Infrastructure Levy: the meeting in February was attended by representatives of various groups, and good discussion was had regarding provision for the village. The main items that were suggested were continuing improvements to the village hall, improved health and fitness facilities and improved accessibility of the playing field, common and village hall. A survey will now be sent to all asking you to give your priorities. However, it must be noted that any improvements have a cost attached – we can apply for grant funding for capital and infrastructure but ongoing maintenance will mean an increase to the precept over the years. Planning applications – White House Farm, Upper Town – conversion of existing barns to farm dwelling. No objections raised. Land adjacent Dragonfly Barn, Elmswell Road – erection of dwelling with double garage. No objections raised. 5 Park View – non material amendments approved. Noticeboard, Upper town – funding has been applied for to replace this. Budget and precept – the budget for next year was agreed, at £12, 915 and the precept set at £12911, which will amount to £54.36 per band D equivalent property, a 3% increase on last year. The next meeting will be held on Monday 18 March at 7.30 at the village hall. All welcome. Full minutes and agendas on the website: wetherden.onesuffolk.net. See us/have your say on Facebook too! MAKE A CHANGE, BECOME A LOCAL COUNCILLOR

Local (town and parish) councils are led by democratically elected councillors from the local

community. Local councillors decide on what services and projects the council will deliver. As

representatives of the first tier of local government and the closest to their communities, local

councillors are best placed to engage with their residents and find out what the real local issues are and

how to overcome them.

Local councils are encouraging residents who are passionate about their community to stand for

election. Local councils welcome and are committed to the inclusion and recognition of all regardless

of race, culture, ability, ethnicity or gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, marital status,

religious affiliation, and socioeconomic status.

There are currently 120,000 councillors serving on the 10,000 local councils in England.

Haughley Parish Council is calling on residents, passionate about their community to stand in the

local elections in 2019.

What do councillors do?

Councillors are the champions of their community and give residents a voice on the decisions the

council makes. Becoming a councillor will allow you to make a real difference in your community by

engaging with residents, local groups and businesses to find out their needs; making decisions on which

services and projects the council should take forward; and getting involved locally to ensure the

services are meeting your community’s needs.

How long does it take?

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) Local Councillor Census Survey found that

councillors put aside, on average, three hours a week for council work. This often includes attending

meetings, engaging with residents and speaking on behalf of the council to other bodies.

Can I stand?

There are only a few rules to stand for election. You must be:

A British citizen, or a citizen of the Commonwealth, or the European Union

18 years of age or older

Live in an area that is served by a local council

How can I get involved?

WETHERDEN HISTORY GROUP Annual Report

On 5th January 2019 we celebrated our Tenth Anniversary. It is hard to believe how much we have achieved since that first tentative meeting when eight people gathered at Beech Cottage in 2009. Our Annual Events have provided an opportunity for sharing information and have seen us collect and collate information on a variety of topics. Over the 10 years we have looked at: 2009 A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

It was at our 2018 Event that we were able to show people our latest achievement, our book:

WETHERDEN REMEMBERS THOSE WHO WENT TO WAR 1914 – 1918

The research for this started back in 2014 with a list of 88 men on the Wetherden Roll of Honour published in the Stowmarket Weekly Post in July 1917. By the time we came to publish we had a list of 145 men, all connected to Wetherden is some way. The book tells each of their stories and costs £10. Our continuing success is due to the work and efforts of group members who contribute in so many different ways supported by our Chairman Alex Jarrett, Chris Donovan who looks after our finances and Pat Tuffin who steers our annual events and also looks after our archives. ….. Haughley Playing Field and Pavilion News

Our quiz night on Saturday 26th January 2019 raised just under £200.00. Thank you to all the competitors and helpers for supporting me with this event. It was an evening full of laughs and tight competition. The winners won by 1 point!

This year’s first 50/50 draw will be held on the 5th March at 7.30 at the start of the Royal British Legion meeting, at the Scout hut, Ron Crascall Pavilion.

At our February meeting it was agreed that the Bowls club could expand their enclosed space to incorporate the grass triangle at the side of the car park. This will allow them some spectator picnic area on that side of the bowling green.

Crawford’s primary school is planning to host an indoor planetarium event on the 14 th March. This will be an all-day event going into the evening. The idea is to be able to invite members of the public to be able to come along after school hours to enjoy the show for a small donation.

On behalf of the Committee I would like to express our condolences to the families of Beattie Crascall and John ‘Hoss’ Faiers who have long associations with the playing field clubs.

PALMERS BAKERY To commemorate 150 years of Palmers Bakery we have released the recollections of one of our former employees who will be affectionately known to many, Joan Grimwood, Office Clerk to Palmers (Haughley) Ltd from 1939 to 2001; sixty two years. It was recorded in 1994 and has never been released until today. “I first came to Haughley in the summer of 1939. My friend Miriam Capp had begun a job as clerk to Palmers (Haughley) Ltd at their Mill offices in Duke Street. She was rather sweet on young Master Roy Palmer but when she realised he wasn’t faintly interested she left after two weeks. I lived in Stowmarket then with my parents who looked after the Congregational Church that was bombed in the war. I was offered the job despite concerns from our Church Minister that men may swear on the premises…. so I arrived at Haughley Station on my first day, 6th December 1939, and was told to get off the train and walk straight down the lane to Haughley; I did and took the wrong lane and walked into Old Newton!! My office was up the steps in the Mill and I sat at my desk by the window for many years. Every morning I would arrive and the little old smoky tortoise stove in the corner would be lit for me and I’d have to make a beeline for the door past old Barwees horse (Charles James); it was a nasty old thing it would curl its lip and try and bite me, every day he shouted at it to stop. It was the nature of the business but it was a dusty flour mill with the ever present threat of mice! The men had regular rat catching sessions, trousers tucked into their socks ever since Russell Green had one disappear to his nether regions, herding them with chicken wire and finishing them off with a club, a pistol and a terrier! I joined the ‘firm’ in the war and soon after I got a bike to cycle to work past the Fever Hospital and down Tothill into the village. It became my life with generations of Palmers, people and families calling at the office to pay bills and rents, to buy and collect feeds for their animals, as most people kept chickens and rabbits at home, and of course all the farmers who were characters in themselves. I was strafed many a time by German aircraft during the war and ambushed by soldiers demanding identification blacked up on patrol so it was certainly an experience! We had several fire bombs land on the mill and the old Governor (William E G Palmer) even put one in his hat and threw it out into Duke Street. The old Governor took over the Bakery from his father (William J Palmer) at the turn of the century (1903), he wasn’t the greatest fan of his father’s business ideas and he’d lost his mother when he was a boy because of his father’s political campaigning in London brought back the small pox killing his mother and sister (1885)…., he ended up in quarantine, his step mother had then fallen down the cellar steps (1932) and broke her neck; in fact soon after I joined lots of Palmers died so I hope it wasn’t me! He had Fred Bullet working for him and his father for forty years and he had also taken on Barker (George) Lee who worked and lived on the Farm and Harry (Rutherford), both Barnardo’s boys, and George (Robinson) in the Bakehouse. He’d purchased the Mill and Farm at the turn of the century from the Adams family when the Adams went bankrupt but kept the family on. When I first joined at the Mill there was young Frank Green, Bun (William) Hart, Bob Adams, Ted Chapman and old Albert Morphew; Albert would also come in on Saturdays to dress the old mill stones so they’d be ready for the next week to grind the corn as they had to be sharp. They were run by big old smoky engines; boom, boom, boom they went on next to my office till they were replaced by new electric ones many years later. The mix of corn would be shovelled upstairs by hand and fed through a shute into the sacks below and then stitched – it was a mixed meal we sold used for nearly all animals. Farmers would also bring their own corn to be ground and we would go to the Corn Exchanges in Bury and Stow each week to our desk with a sample of the corn; we’d test it by biting and weighing it, of barley, wheats and oats, and then get the best price for them before we let the farmer know what they’d been offered then draw up the contracts if they agreed. We were Millers, Farmers and Bakers and let much property so I had to meet and deal with everyone and everything from my desk. I saw everything; I learnt to keep my mouth shut as everyone knew everyone or was related to everyone and I listened to everything! The pigeon toed Rev Walter Grainger White, a supposed spy, was controversial and a stirrer he upset everyone because he went the wrong way about it but he was a man born before his time, he brought electric, housing, sanitation and water to the village but his poor wife having to have her furniture auctioned every so often in the garden by Bailiffs after he had lost a court case to have it bought back and donated to them by kindly friends made me feel sorry for her. I can remember old Sam Goode the miller, he kept the Windmill before us, shouting and banging on the door with his stick before going off to the Pub and then seeing his horse and trap going past driver less with him asleep in the back drunk as the horse made its own way home. Cont’d …….

…. Cont’d In about the early fifties (1954) I remember all the mothers running up the street screaming and calling 999 for them when a jet fighter hit the school, the poor man’s hand was found on the playing field. One of my saddest memories was cycling home and seeing our lovely old Windmill in Station Road burning down; we stored corn in it and some boys got in and left burning cigarettes on the sacks, it went up like a tinder box. It was built by Wellington’s men on the way to fight Napoleon and the ‘firm’ were restoring it with Lady Eve and Ronnie Palmer. We kept a few pigs at the Mill including one of my own, we could keep half and sell half under war

restrictions, but we mainly kept 200 or more pigs at Palmers Farm, Mill Farm behind the playing field

run for the firm by Barker (George Lee). We would buy in weaners and then fatten them up before going

to Elmswell Bacon Factory to be slaughtered. We grew mainly Barley, Sugar Beet and Potatoes and

Kenny Moss later looked after this and the pigs with Mr Eastall of Haughley Green carting these to Bury

Sugar Beet factory under permit. Gangs of woman used to come up from Kent and London to stay for a

few weeks to pick and riddle potatoes; they were rough and terrified me. We had no lorry then but

‘Barwee’ with his horse and cart used to be out all day delivering feeds; he was a first world war POW

so was a bit slow.

NEWS FROM 1ST WETHERDEN & HAUGHLEY SCOUT GROUP The scouting year is in full swing and time has passed quickly since our last update. In August, the scout troop spent a week at Tolmers campsite in Hertfordshire along with scouts from all over the country. Climbing, kayaking, sailing, cooking on a bonfire and various silly games on inflatables took up much of the time. We also had a fabulous day trip to London, organised by Colin, where we visited the Science Museum and HMS Belfast, travelled by train, tube, boat bus and on foot. We saw a lot in one day and ate a huge amount in seven. Our oldest scouts, Finn and Tom, attended two weekend offshore sailing courses on the Suffolk scout sailing yachts. Both also achieved their Chief Scout Gold Award – the highest award for scouts of this age. Along with Jake, Jack and Tommy, they then won first place in the Stowmarket District Lightweight Hike competition, spending two days navigating along a route with checkpoints, carrying all their kit, tents and food, setting up camp and cooking their own meals. Most gratifying were their high scores for attitude and teamwork. Our practice team also did extremely well, insisting on carrying all their kit even though they didn’t have to. We look forward to defending the title next year. We have just returned from Frostbite camp, the first weekend in February. The scouts, aged 10 and up, slept in tarpaulin shelters they made themselves at temperatures down to minus 6. They then put in huge effort and fantastic teamwork on the Sunday morning, dragging and stacking logs from the woods into piles to help the management of the campsite. In August, five of our cubs, one scout and four leaders went to Rotterdam with over sixty other cub scouts and thirty leaders from the county. We stayed on a camp site with canoes, kayaks, a water-based assault course and rafting (and mud!), went to a forest high ropes course where some of us met – and overcame – some very high personal challenges and we spent a day at Efteling theme park. Our cub leader, Jon Illingworth, was one of the organisers of this huge undertaking. Despite the hideous pink hoodies which leaders were required to wear, we wish him the very best of luck as his retirement from the fire service takes him to a new job and a new location. Thank you, Jon, for the last couple of years as our Akela. Since the summer, cubs have completed loads of badges and challenges and had a lot of fun, thanks to the continued hard work and organisation of Jenni and John, and the fantastic parents who support them. Meanwhile, our beaver scouts have been as busy as ever with personal challenges, bonfire artwork, bird feeders, bug hotels, a sleepover at the hut, games and challenges, armpit fudge, street dancing with Josie and a district sleepover in Thetford with other beavers from Stowmarket area. Led by Dave, Karen and Carly, the beaver colony is as full as ever and the waiting list is long so please put your children on the list early. See contacts at the front of the Parish News. The group would like to thank Mr Sillett for fixing the scout hut roof over Christmas and Richard Coe for the fantastic saw horse that was delivered within hours of our New Year’s Eve request. It has already been used at camp! We also want to express our gratitude to the parents and other volunteers who regularly help us provide these experiences for the scouts. We believe in the value of what scouting offers children and young people. We need more adult volunteers to help us continue. One big team made up of those who can volunteer regularly, occasionally or one-off – who can carry stuff, cook stuff, fix stuff, organise stuff, transport stuff, play games or help us in many ways – is the way we will be able to continue to provide this.
