NEWS FROM YOUR MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCILLOR Locality Grants available: Again this year, Mid Suffolk District Council has provided each District Councillor with £6,250.00 in grant funding for local community groups to apply to. I have sent forms out to many community groups and will be assessing all applications next month. If you would like to apply, please contact me for a form. Applications can be made for anything required for your group or organisation and need to be accompanied by a letter explaining what is needed, why it is needed and how much money is requested. Grants can be made from £250 upwards. Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL): Since it was introduced in April 2016, Mid Suffolk District Council has been collecting CIL on all new developments. From the amount collected, 15% goes to the Parish in which the development occurred (or 25% if there is a Neighbourhood Plan) and after taking 5% to cover administration costs, the remainder is split between a local and a strategic fund. Community groups and Parish Councils can apply for funding from the local fund – regardless of whether development has taken place in their village. Funding rounds are every six months and the first round of funding was in May. Amounts were awarded to Stowupland Village Hall Committee and Botesdale Health Centre amongst others. The next round of funding is from 1st to 28th October. For more details and application forms, please visit www.midsuffolk.gov.uk and go to Planning then CIL. The relevant forms are on the “spending CIL” webpage. Parish Infrastructure Investment Plan (PIIP): The District Council recommends that CIL projects are included in each parishes’ Infrastructure Investment Plan. In simple terms this is a list drawn up by Parish Councils, with your support, to give an idea of what a village or parish might need for the future – and based on what facilities we already have. The list can include anything from a new bench to a sports pavilion. The PIIP can then support any claims for CIL that a community group or Parish Council might make. VOLUNTEER NEEDED Haughley & Wetherden Parish News magazine is distributed by a dedicated band of over 30 volunteer distributors and deliverers to more than one thousand properties in the two villages. We have a vacancy at present for someone to deliver to Haughley properties in the Tot Hill area (down as far as Narey’s and Spike’s Lane). The task involves delivering about 16 copies of the magazine to houses and commercial premises in that area. It usually only takes about 45 minutes of your time, ten times a year. If anyone would like to volunteer to carry out this community task in Haughley, please contact:

Dear Friends, I wonder, what are you looking for? I enjoy looking for a good film, and often I choose to watch films whose trailers show the light of promise but turn out to be… disappointing shadows. Not so recently, I’m always guarded about interpretation of the Christian Gospel in film, but not so the film RISEN (staring Joseph Fiennes no less). The film reminds me of theologian Gerd Theissen’s book ‘The Shadow of the Galilean’ where Pilate’s questioning of Jesus, as to whether Jesus and His followers pose any threat to Rome’s Empire, becomes a theme expanded upon in his book. The film RISEN has Pilate charge his trusted tribune Clavius with tracking down Jesus’ followers after reports of Jesus’ body being removed from the tomb, so begins Clavius’ chasing of shadows. So the viewer too is drawn into the questioning of what is truth, shadow and light. The church today, so often struggles to be seen at all as culture and media cast us aside to the shadows. Ask those you meet when was the last time they looked to their local church? Perhaps that would depend on what they were looking for. I don’t know what folk were looking for in Haughley St Mary’s hosting of touring ‘progressive rockers’ and songwriters, Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington, they of ‘The Blackheart Orchestra’ at their recent concert here. But I took heart that many new faces enjoyed the ambience and spiritual presence of our church’s worship space, as well the insights and observations of these two well versed exponents of today’s song writing scene. One of Chrissy’s songs ‘Not Over Yet’ reveals this summary of the Christian Gospel hope; ‘What if the engine stops half way across the land,
what if you learn to fall before you take my hand
It’s Over - Not over yet’.
The verses continue to ask of endings what begins, and I guess it depends on just what you are looking for. The Christian Gospel assures us, as Chrissy’s lyric continues – ‘It’s alright to cry, it’s alright to fear, I am here, it’s over, not over, not over yet.’ Well I hope it’s not over for the use of St Mary’s church as a music venue, and we hope from time to time we will attract such thoughtful creative musicians to play here, indeed I hope we may see ‘The Blackheart Orchestra’ with us again. What are you looking for? The point of the film RISEN, in Clavius’ search for Jesus’ body is precisely that he is searching for what is missing, as so often we find ourselves doing when we lament - it’s over. Saying it’s over, searching for what we are missing means we find ourselves missing what is already in our midst, not over but begun, in a reconciling word, a friendly gesture, a kindly deed. Perhaps that’s our problem with, our outlook, our community, our politics, our media, our Europe… We have spent so much time looking for shadows we have forgotten to look to the light. NEWS FROM GALLOWSFIELD WOOD Squirrels. You either love them or loathe them. The problem with squirrels is that they do enormous damage to trees and they just love to eat bird’s eggs, consequently our trees are suffering and there is a notable absence of birds in our woodland. The Management Committee has decided that their numbers need to be reduced, so during the winter and spring some necessary culling will take place. This will be done professionally, and on occasions parts of the woodland will be taped off to give restricted access whilst this work is carried out. Call for volunteers! Could you spare an hour or two to help out with various tasks that must be carried out this autumn, most importantly reducing some of the undergrowth in the arboretum. Please turn up if you can, with loppers, goggles and gloves at 10.00 on Sunday November 4th. A date for your diary, particularly if you are a dog owner. Boxing Day is traditionally a time for blowing away the cobwebs after Christmas, so this year why not take the dog to Gallowsfield to see how many dogs we can assemble at one time? Mass dog walking at Gallowsfield Wood will be at 11.00 on Boxing Day. Please come even if you don’t have a dog!

WI HAUGHLEY On 4th September, Gillian Grinham entertained us with Performance Sketches by Joyce Grenfell. The night was very successful and her one woman show is a must to see. Gillian presented different characters based on Joyce Grenfell’s comedy sketches, and using her own observations on life, demonstrated that humour is present in everyday encounters. Do come and join us for what promises to be another entertaining night on 3rd October when we host a lively review by Rev David Atkins on It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vicar. The regular lunch club is thriving, thanks to Doreen, and will be meeting at Alder Carr on 15th November. Already we are planning our Christmas socials with a WI Celebration Dinner on 12th December plus tickets to the Panto on 6th December. If you missed their performances in the village then do join us on 5th December when The Kettle Girls entertain with songs. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at

‘No-one can Serve Two Masters!’ (Matthew 6: 24) One of the funniest plays I remember seeing was entitled ‘The Servant of Two Masters’. It was based on an Italian Classic farce from the 19th Century (translated into English!), where the key character is the exceptionally quirky and comical servant, who is constantly complaining of an empty stomach. To satisfy his hunger he keeps finding ingenious ways to satisfy his cravings, and then consuming everything and anything in sight. As my mother would remark: ‘His eyes were bigger than his belly’. The servant offers his time and resources to a young rich gentleman traveller (actually a woman in disguise – but that’s another sub-plot in the play), and fulfils his responsibilities to his master reasonably well, but more so if there is an advantage to his aching stomach. All seems to be progressing reasonably well, until the opportunity presents itself that enables him to take on the extra role of being a servant to another wealthy traveller – hence ‘The Servant of Two Masters’. He sees this as an opportunity to increase his food intake, but inevitably gets himself into all manner of scrapes, thus creating a farce of side-splitting proportions Inevitably the servant’s main problem is how to satisfy the orders of two masters, as each makes constant demands both at the same time and with the expectation of instant attention. This is then complicated by other characters appearing on stage and discretely handing him letters, money, instructions etc. with the words "This is for your master" without specifying which one. Just as you think that matters couldn’t get any worse, the servant discovers his two masters are staying in the same hotel, and are in fact, searching for each other, although he is busy trying to keep them apart. The most famous set-piece of the play is the scene in which the starving servant tries to preside over a banquet for his masters and their guests with both groups on different parts of the stage. He tries to juggle with food presentations and drinks without arousing the suspicions of the other, while desperately trying to satisfy his own hunger. Increasingly he moves around the stage in ever decreasing circles, although fulfilling most tasks with impeccable timing. It comes as no surprise that he’s eventually found out when everything collapses around him – he could only keep up the pretence for so long – but the ‘masters’ are reconciled, and, in the process, he is forgiven. For me the play highlights an incredible truth that is there both in the Old Testament as well as in the Gospel teaching. Early on we discover God saying through the Prophet Moses: ‘You shall have no other gods but Me’ (Exodus 20:2 and Deuteronomy 5:6) thus establishing the special relationship between a chosen people and their God. Jesus was only too aware of this truth when He warned that: ‘`No one can serve two masters; for either they will hate the first and love the second, or they will be devoted to the first and despise the second. You cannot serve God and Money’ (Matthew 6: 24). Clearly, in this case, He wanted to warn against the striving for wealth and financial reward at the expense of our inner well-being. But Jesus also broadens this challenge when He put a question to His twelve followers at a time when many were abandoning Jesus because of the demands of discipleship. Peter affirmed his faith and trust when asked to make a choice, by declaring ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God’ (John 6: 68 – 69). Peter makes a commitment to have only one Master, and that is Jesus Christ his Lord and Saviour. We know the responsibility is ours too – we are faced with the same challenge, and must make our stand, knowing we are encouraged to do the right thing in God’s eyes and serve Him alone. WETHERDEN VILLAGE HALL It’s a little known fact that September is International Square Dancing Month! We were not caught on the hop, or even led a merry dance, when we held our Whist Drive on the 14th of the month, as we had seven tables in play! Everyone seemed to keep in step, and to enjoy the evening a great deal, which of course makes us very happy too! As you can imagine, with all that dancing we were in a bit of a spin ourselves by the time the winning tickets were drawn from our Lottery Drum! After we had caught our breath, we found that the following names had come up trumps:-

HAUGHLEY PARISH COUNCIL REPORT – SEPTEMBER 2018 PLANNING – CURRENT HIGHLIGHTS The Council received a report from the Working Party meeting held with Pegasus in connection with Planning application DC/18/03592 - Former Poultry Processing Plant - Haughley Park. The Council do not support this proposed development and agreed to submit their unanimous objections to MSDC. The Council received a report from the Working Party meeting held with Catesby in connection with the proposed development off Fishponds Way. The revised proposal was considered and it was noted that Catesby has acted upon public consultation feedback. The Council supports this proposed development. NOTE: Some essential exploratory ground work is taking place. This is NOT the start of any building works. The Council considered SCC\0080\18 – Lawn Farm Quarry, Wetherden: Variation of Conditions and SCC\0049\18 - Lawn Farm Quarry, Wetherden: Retrospective application for batching plant. The Council agreed to submit its unanimous objections to SCC. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Council received from the Working Party its submission version of the Neighbourhood Plan and the Summary of Conditions Report. Both documents were endorsed approved by the Council. LITTER PICKING Remains a voluntary activity until the Litter Picker returns to her full duties. Please use the litter bins and help to keep the village litter-free. The next community litter pick will be on 6th October. Meet at 10:00 on the Green. Bags and safety equipment provided. PARISH CLERK VACANCY Our robust recruitment is moving along and we are cautiously optimistic that we will find a suitable person to fill the vacancy from amongst the applications we have received. THE SIGN/MAP ALONGSIDE THE MOAT This is in a very sorry state. It is to be removed from its post for cleaning and to assess if it can be repaired/replicated. This work may take some time, so don’t worry if it is not returned for a considerable period of time. CHRISTMAS LIGHTS Switch-on will be on Friday December 7, with a new set of lights no less. There will be more information about this lighting spectacular next month. HAUGHLEY PLAYING FIELD AND PAVILION NEWS
Those of you that walk through or use the playing field regularly will have noticed a few changes. I need to thank Tony Monaghan and his team of men who were contracted to do the base for the shelter but decided to help Pip with a lot of the pending maintenance jobs. So, not only do we now have the shelter base, the gates and bins have been painted, the wooden benches have been stained and the picnic bench repositioned. The overgrowth has been trimmed back and the patio and edges of the pavilion have been weeded and tidied up. This was a tremendous boost to me and the Committee and I am very grateful. Dave Walker has now been able to order the Gazebo style shelter and I am sure you will all agree it will be lovely to have this facility back at the playing field.
The winners of the 50/50 club draw held on 5th September at the WI meeting in the Village Hall are; 1st. Janet Berry £50, 2nd.Ross Dawson £10, 3rd.Heidi Harris £10. The next draw will be at the Christmas Lights switch-on when the prizes will be 1st £100, 2nd £20, 3rd £10. There will of course be forms available at the Christmas lights switch-on event for people to join for 2019.
Don’t forget we are launching a monthly Bingo session on Tuesday the13th November 2018. If anyone is interested in helping at these sessions please contact me. Bingo sessions will be every second Tuesday of the month at the Pavilion so please come and join us. Courtesy of the Co-op cuppa scheme, that gives vouchers for new groups ,we will have plenty of tea bags for a free cuppa for quite a few months!

________________________________________________________________ Dear reader, I write on behalf of the branch committee and ask that please find the time to attend our AGM on the 2nd October at 7.45pm at the scout hut. The branch has been through some unstable periods over the last 10 months and we want to get back to stability and direction. Therefore I ask that you make a point of attending and voting. The harsh reality is that without YOU the branch is non existent and this could become a reality. Without us where would local veterans turn to? Without us who would maintain the war memorial? Without us who would ensure the memory of the fallen are remembered? With us, it is being achieved and let's keep it going! Were you at the September meeting? Good wasn't it! We would like to thank Sandra, Graham and most importantly Opal, Graham's guide dog who enjoyed all the attention. A fantastic talk on guide dogs - Thank you! Our annual BBQ and Quiz night went very well with 10 teams entering. Well done to the optimists who all walked away with a bottle of wine! The amount raised will be shared shortly. The unveiling of Haughley's remembrance poppies will take place on 27th October from 1.00 pm until 4.00 pm. There will be tea and cakes available and Royal British Legion poppy related items for sale. Notes from the Parish Council meetings held in September 2018
An extraordinary meeting was held at the beginning of September to consider three planning applications, two regarding Lawn Farm Quarry/Aggmax and one on the application to build 149 houses at Haughley Park. The parish council made objections/comments on all three. It was good to have so many members of the public at this meeting, expressing an interest in matters that do/would strongly affect the village. New Councillor: we are very pleased to co-opt Ivan Austin on to the parish council. Ivan lives in Base Green, and it will be good to have that area of the village represented. We still have one vacancy, so if you live or work within 3 miles of the village and would like to be co-opted, please do contact me. If you live in Upper Town that would be even more advantageous.... Elections are next May, and we will be losing a couple of councillors, so we desperately need to fill vacancies as they arise. It is an exciting time to be joining the council, with much going on to get involved with, and your chance to have a say in shaping future developments. Volunteers: we are very pleased that a volunteer has come forward to help maintain the defibrillator. Thank you Craig. We need volunteers to help move the Speed Indicator Device – the location of this moves every so often. It is not an onerous job, so if you feel you would be able to help, please contact me. Playing field/common: we are pleased to repor t some successes. The dog waste bin at the entrance to the playing field has been emptied, and will be done weekly from now on. The pavilion now has a new roof, and plans are in hand for the remainder of the work that needs doing on it. The old metal from the roof is behind the pavilion. If there is any left by the time you read this, please help yourself. The shed, swings and goalposts have been painted, the memorial bench has been oiled. The damaged seat by the tennis courts has been removed. The council is discussing replacing this, and also the raised beds, which are damaged. Fund raising is being considered for all the projects needed in the village, and consultation on which are priority will take place later in the year. The common is being strimmed. It has been noted that the number of species has increased, for example more mint in the ditch (good for newts). Traffic calming: discussion took place on tr affic calming measures ar ound Wetherden/Elmswell Road and School Meadow, and where the yellow lines are/should be. The road is due for resurfacing next year and we ask you to contact Highways via the Suffolk County Council reporting tool to give your views on problems on that road which should be fixed before the resurfacing is carried out. Planning applications: New House, Stowmar ket Road, erection of r amped access to fr ont, granted. The Bungalow, Base Green, erection of extensions, granted. Land adjacent Arkholme, School Meadow, erection of two dwellings, application withdrawn. Full minutes and agendas for the meetings are on the website, wetherden.onesuffolk.net. Stowmarket and District Camera Club We started our new season on 10 September and welcomed members from last year as well as ‘returning’ members and several new potential members. Our chairman explained what the club was about for the benefit of the new people and ran over the exciting new programme for 2018/19 for the benefit of all. This includes competitions judged by experienced visiting judges as well as highly regarded visiting speakers who give talks on specific aspects of photography, often with ‘how to’ advice. We also have practical evenings, photo shoots and social events. Members also brought PDIs (Projected Digital Images) in for discussion and critique. Next meetings: Monday 24 September: Cracked Lens competition – best PDI of the night – to be judged by the members. Monday 8 October: Open Competition 1 – to be judged by Nigel Rea ARPS. Monday 22 October: Club Night Monday 12 November: ‘Lifting the Lid on How’ a talk to be given by Jamie Hall. You don't have to be an 'Expert Photographer' to be welcomed as a member of the Club. All you need is an interest in photography. Our aim is to encourage you to develop your interest and skills, as well as to provide a place to meet a range of friendly people who share your interest. New members are always very welcome at the club. All you need is a camera – any camera and a real interest in using it. Our members use DSLRs, mirrorless, compacts and bridge cameras. Regular meetings are held at Stowmarket Community Centre, Hillside, Stowmarket, IP14 2BD, usually on the 2nd & 4th Monday of the month between September & June. We start arriving at around 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start and a 9.45pm finish. We’d love to see you there, so why not join us?

HAUGHLEY FESTIVAL 2019
25 May - 2 June
In March of this year, it was decided to broaden the traditional St Mary’s Haughley Flower Festival to include more events and to ask for sponsorship from local individuals and firms. The Festival was held, in May, just a couple of months after this decision was made, so time was limited. However the result proved to be extraordinarily successful. The Flowers were tip-top, the Musical events were thoroughly enjoyed by many people and of course the Dog Show on the Sunday afternoon was something not to be missed. And there was more besides, including Stalls and Exhibitions. Over £3,000 was raised, almost double the amount that had been raised in previous years - so all very worthwhile. The church has used a percentage of the profits for the continuing support and essential repairs to our Post Office and the Maxwell Charnley Community Room. So ….it has been decided to extend the project in 2019 by having more events during the holiday week following the Church Flower Festival. There are plans for evening entertainment, games on the Green, ….. much eating, some walking and with the hopeful involvement of other groups …… all is being currently investigated and worked on. Anyone wishing to join the small organising group for next year’s Festival is welcome to come along and see how we work.
