NOTE FROM EDITOR:
Welcome to the July/August issue of the
Parish News. And the good news is that we
are back in print so a special welcome to those
who were not able to access the Parish News on-
line.
Very slowly some things are returning to the “new
norm”. As long as I wear gloves and a mask I can
venture outside and partake of my favourite
hobby, shopping which is not good news for my
husband. Not buying any “must haves” and not
filling the car with petrol our bank account has
never looked so healthy!
Like many I was looking forward to my summer
holiday abroad but as with so many other things
holidays are on hold for now. So I will treat
myself to the occasional day trip to the nearest
beach and enjoy fish and chips whilst being dive
bombed by the local seagulls.
Whatever you do this summer enjoy and stay safe.
Until the next time ….

HAUGHLEY IN BLOOM
Hopefully you will have noticed that
thanks to a few stalwarts the
Haughley in Bloom containers
around the parish have been tidied
up and replanted for the summer.
We’ve never had so many helping hands. So, personal thanks go
to parishioners who provided plants and compost, Woolpit Nursery and
to those who generously and cheerfully gave their time and energy to
get the job done in record time:
Anna, Judy, Pat C, Pat B, Veronica, Mary, Gill, David, Jane, Alan,
Alf, Yvonne T, Alison, Marian and all parishioners who look after
containers outside or near their own homes.
All that needs to be done now is a combined effort to keep things
watered, using any method of choice: watering can, bowls of grey
water or for those with sufficient muscle (or access to borrowed
muscles!) the HiB water bowser.
For more information about Haughley in Bloom, or to offer any help with
maintaining the planters, please contact:

HAUGHLEY PLAYING FIELD AND PAVILION NEWS
Hello, I hope you are all still safe and well. Welcome back to the printed version. If you missed any previous on line articles, please be aware that the play equipment is still taped off to reduce temptation until restrictions ease allowing use. The Skate ramps are allowed to be used for exercise as well as the basketball courts provided social distancing is respected. I am pleased to see sensible groups making the most of the sunshine at our lovely playing field. Some bringing a chair to sit in a socially distanced circle to catch or walking through. Dog owners, please remember to take poo bags and clear up after your dog. Sadly, there has been mess left on the pathways. There are poo bins close to all 3 entrances to the playing field so please use the appropriate bins. Thank you. Work for the replacement storage building is going on behind the scenes. At this stage it is all paper work and liaison work for pre-planning applications and seeking grant funding. The main user groups have all pledged a contribution and our District Councillor has pledged £5,000 from her locality budget. At our last online meeting I advised my committee that I would like a break from being the chairman at the end of August. I intend to continue on the committee as a Parish Council representative. I will still be an active member involved in some of the activities and won’t rule out taking up the reigns of chairman again in the future but hopefully one of my Parish council colleagues will be taking on the position and writing these reports to keep you informed. I would like to thank everyone for their support whilst I have been chairman and value the kindness and encouragement I have received. I will support the next chairman and continue to help improve our playing field and its facilities. Cont’d …..

NEWS FROM YOUR DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Covid 19 response and news: While the Council is moving to a “new normal” the emergency help for the Covid 19 response remains in place: emergency telephone number 0800 876 6926 available 7 days a week from 9am to 5pm. There have been over 250 community groups across Mid Suffolk and Babergh districts helping to deal with the crisis. Grants: There are a number of grants available to businesses and organisations – small business, retail, hospitality and leisure grants, business rates relief grants and discretionary grants. If you have not received a grant and you think your business or organisation is eligible, visit www.miduffolk.gov.uk to apply or contact one of us. Safer shopping and outdoor activity: As lockdown eases, the Council has been working with Town and Parish Councils as well as the County Council to ensure local high streets are safe for shopping. The Council has also been working with the County Council to set up temporary changes for improved cycling routes across the district. Investments: The Council’s commercial investment vehicle, CIFCO, has shown a £3.5 million loss over the last 12 months. This is on the book value of the assets that have been brought which include an office block in Epsom and a car showroom in Milton Keynes. CIFCO provides income to the Council, from rents earned, but we are concerned this will be severely limited this year providing very little return to the Council. Locality Grants: Each Councillor has a £7,350 in grants to provide to local community groups in the current financial year. In Haughley we are contributing towards the storage improvements at the Pavilion. If your community group needs funding, please get in touch. www.elmswell-history.org.uk Due to the continuing health emergency, we cannot meet as a group until September, at the earliest. Therefore,
several of our recent meetings were cancelled, as will be our 9
th July outing, but the committee hopes to be able to convene
in August to discuss and decide what our next steps will be. Meanwhile, we hope you will all keep safe and healthy, and we look forward to meeting again together in the Autumn which, with any luck, will be in our newly rebuilt Wesley Hall. Publicity for Wetherden’s lovely ‘Library’ If you are still having to remain at home for the majority of the day (or even if not) and have run out of good old-fashioned books while most ‘normal’ libraries remain closed, why not visit Wetherden’s super mini library in their re-purposed phone box by the car park opposite the Maypole pub. There you’ll find heaps of donated books of every type, available at absolutely no charge, and where it is easy to remain “socially distanced” because it will accommodate just one person at a time. It is open 24/7, so why not stock up for this year’s ‘staycation’ - enjoy!

JULY NEWSLETTER “There is a right time and a right way to do everything, but we know so little!” Ecclesiastes 8:6 Good News Translation (GNT) Normally, in July school children would have been looking forward to their summer break from school. But this year many have already been off school since mid- March. In July we look forward to Summer holidays which for many is a trip to the airport and a flight to some holiday resort. But this year many find their chosen holiday cancelled. And, of course in July we look forward to hot summer days. But this year we have had many a hot day in May! We know that in normal times there is a right time for things to happen….but these are not normal times. However, despite so many changes to what we might expect at this time of the year there are some things that still tell us that there is a right time. My garden is one place that tells me what time of the year it is…well on the whole…..the potatoes and other vegetables know that summer into autumn is the time for them. And my first strawberry (Oh what a delight) needed the sun, and plenty of water before it was ready. We can see at their best in July the Delphiniums, Agapanthus, lavender various Clematis, Dahlias and so many more flowers. Even though the time is not right this year for us to open our gardens to share these flowers with others the time will be right to dead head the various flowering plants so that we can continue to enjoy their beauty long into the summer. There is also the right time to celebrate certain things this month. Believe it or not July 2 is “I Forgot Day”; July 11 is “Cheer Up the Lonely Day”; and one of my favourites is July 28 which is “National Milk Chocolate Day”. These days don’t change and come about every year at the same time. We also know that there is a right way of doing things. My finger tells me that hitting it with a hammer is not the right way of getting a nail into a piece of wood. But I’m never too old to learn!

….. Cont’d Over the past few months most of the world has learnt the right way of behaving during a pandemic. We have learnt again the art of community. We’ve learnt to be grateful to the NHS and all who have kept us going. Perhaps one of the most important things is that we have realised that unless we all take responsibility and ownership of our actions, across spheres, we are all at risk. With God there is so much still to know and we may never, on this earth, get the full picture but God knows the appropriate time for all things and God knows the response he would have us give. So, may we, in times of difficulty, think of those around us and those around the world so that we ensure that we act at the right time and in the right way in every situation.
