A simple way to connect or reconnect with someone – whether it’s a friend, family member or workmate– is over a cuppa. That’s why this year we’re calling on Australians to make time for a cuppa and a convo with the people who matter most to them.
This initiative is about strengthening our relationships and bridging the gap between caring about someone and letting them know that you’re there for them when they need it. The conversation on the day doesn’t have to be the heavy stuff, sometimes just talking about travel, sport or the kids is enough to ease the stress of life. But if they’ve got a lot on their plate you can use our 4 Steps to show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load.
Remember, in the time it takes to have a cuppa, you could start a conversation that could change a life. Get involved and help create a more connected world.
How do I get started?All you have to do is bring people together and put the kettle on or pick a place to pop out for a cuppa - it’s as simple as that! But here are some tips to make your CUPPA & CONVO event a success:

Spread the word
Use the tear-out poster in this guide to promote your event and encourage everyone to get involved. Invite genuine supporters to endorse and promote the event. Draw on their interest, passion and commitment to attract others to the event.

Are you OK?It’s a simple question, but it can be a tough one to ask. Use this quiz at your event as a fun way to learn R U OK?’s 4 Steps and build everyone’s confidence to have regular, meaningful conversations.
1. When do you think is good time to ask someone, “Are you OK?” a) When they’re surrounded by people in a noisy public place b) When they’re running out the door c) When they’re in a quiet comfortable space that’s ideal for them d) Never. I’ll ignore my gut instinct that something’s not right
2. What’s important to remember when listening to someone talk about how they’re feeling?
a) Tell them about your problems and ‘that time’ when you felt the same b) Let them talk without interruption and listen with an open mind c) Talk over them so they can’t get a word in d) Make eye contact but not really listen to what they’re saying
3. What are some of the next steps you could encourage them to take to manage their situation?
a) Suggest they talk to someone who can provide further support; like their GP, manager or someone they trust
b) Say it’s not that bad and they’ll get over it c) Suggest they don’t talk to anyone else about how they’re feeling d) Suggest they stop doing their favourite things; like sport, social outings
or volunteering
