AP Human Geography is the study of humans and their activities (such as cultural
groups, cities, industries, and population) and where they are located and why they
are there. Human interactions with the environment and their impacts on the
environment will be also studied. Current events, historical issues, data analysis,
theories and models, will be utilized to see how people, places, cultures, and countries
have developed and changed.
Course of Study:
Fall Semester:
Unit 1: Intro to Human Geography – Chapter 1
Unit 2: Population – Chapters 2 and 3
Unit 3: Culture – Chapters 4, 5, and 6
Unit 4: Political Geography – Chapters 7 and 8 Spring Semester:
Unit 5: Agriculture – Chapter 10
Unit 6: Development – Chapters 9, 11, and 14
Unit 7: Urban Geography – Chapters 13 and 12
May: AP Human Geography Exam

AP Human Geography is designed to provide
similar benefits and material as an
introductory college level Geography course.
Textbook: Rubenstein, James. The Cultural Land-
scape: An introduction to Human Geography. 10th
Edition. Boston: Prentice Hall, 2011.
What does this course look like?
Daily reading assignments (either sections of a chap-
ter or articles) with Cornell and SQ3R note-taking
strategies
15 Regional Quizzes identifying the countries and
capitals of the world
Each unit has a project and a test with multiple choice
questions and written responses
Student will conduct research on current issues,
analyze geographic data and create maps
Background knowledge of geography is NOT a
prerequisite, but is helpful
Students who are successful in AP classes have a
willingness to work hard, do the work assigned and
practice time management strategies. This is a college
-level course with more than the typical class amount
of reading, writing and studying.
All students are required to take the AP test in May.
Cost is $95
As a sophomore, earn World History credit
for graduation
As a junior or senior, earn an elective or
Humanities credit for graduation
Earn college credit if you pass the AP Exam
— depending on the college’s policy
