Dick and Megan’sfamily room wasmissing just one

thing: the family. Theirtwo young children weretaking over this grandspace with a mishmash oftoys, books and games. This left little room for Dickand Megan and Megan’s par-ents, who live on the thirdfloor of this beautiful oldhome.

Dick and Megan wanted amultigenerational family roomthat would promote some“together time.” They alsowanted to organize the booksand toys, and make the roommore appealing to adults.

This space had some won-derful features, includingbeautiful leaded windowsoverlooking the garden, a fire-place and classic hardwood

floors. But peeling paint onthe radiators, an understatedmantelpiece and unsuitablefurniture groupings weredetracting from the room’strue potential.

The main point of interestwas the fireplace, so I decidedto give it a radical facelift witha gorgeous new fireplace sur-round and over-mantel madefrom cast stone. This man-made product looks like realstone but actually is cast inrubber moulds and thencemented into place with mor-tar. Although this elegant look

does not come cheaply, I justi-fied the cost by reworking andrepairing the room’s existingcabinetry and shelves and re-

using some of the furniture. The existing cabinetry sur-

rounding the fireplace did bal-ance things, but it was in sad

shape. Years of storing thekids’ toys was taking a toll inthe form of chipped doors and

here’s a new kid on thecabinet-and-granite sup-plier block, and its nameis Da Wing Trading LLC.

A family-owned-and–operated venture, Da Wing Tradingopened its doors last year at 2006Republican St., offering solid woodcabinets with plywood boxes (noMDF, particle board or pressedwood) and granite countertops outof its 8,000 square feet of ware-house and showroom space.

“We own the property where westore in-stock cabinets and granite, thus we don’t have to pay rent, which enables us to pass the sav-ings on to our customers,” saidHarry Kwan, manager.

“We sell (our products) at afford-able prices, which are the people’sprices,” added Kwan’s uncleTommy Chan, who works in the

sales department.Kwan goes on to note that the

family decided to invest in the10,000-square-foot property ratherthan renting it out because theysaw it as a good long-term invest-ment for future generations.

Additionally, the property hasample on-site parking, a scarcity inthe industrial Kalihi area.

“That’s something very impor-tant to have,” Chan stated.

Though Da Wing Trading onlydeals in cabinets and countertops atthe moment, Kwan explains thatthey carry those made of quality

materials. For example, counter-tops are made from granite import-ed from China, while cabinets aremade using alder and maple woods.

“These are solid woods, the goodwoods,” said Chan of the cabinets, which come standard with soft-close hardware and are available infour different color variations, including light cherry, maple, white(maple) and dark cherry (alderonly).

“Cabinets and countertops gohand-in-hand,” Kwan said. “Wechose to focus on granite for coun-tertops because it is a unique, stur-dy, natural rock, and a high-qualityaddition that can enhance the lookand feel of a kitchen or bathroom.”

And for home-improvers lookingfor a little advice on their nextkitchen or bath renovation, DaWing Trading’s staff of profession-

als — which, in addition to Kwanand Chan, includes Kwan’s father,Yue Fung Kwan and cousin, JoshGuan — is ready to help. Just bringa rough draft or sketch of what youwant and the measurements of thespace, and Kwan says they cancome up with a free design andquote for what you’ll need.

“We are hands-on in helping ourcustomers,” Kwan said. “We helpthe customers design their kitchenand bathrooms and work with theirbudget and needs.

“Customer service is our mainconcern, and since we own theproperty, we will be here for a longtime to service our customers.”

Da Wing Trading operatesMonday through Saturday between8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For more informa-tion, call 847-3288 or visitwww.dawingtrading.com.

The BIA RenaissanceBuilding and Re-modeling Awards,

established in 1986, cele-brate excellence in designand construction of newand remodeled projects inHawaii. This showcaserecognizes the followingcompeting categories:Details, Kitchen & Bath,Landscaping, New &Remodeled CommercialBuilding, New & Remod-eled Residential Building,Public Works, HawaiiBuiltGreen™, Historicaland Innovative Design &Construction. The 27thannual awards ceremonywas held May 2, and 38entrants from Hawaii,Maui and Oahu represent-ed an exciting year ofstatewide participation.

The entries were judgedon creativity, use of mate-rials, environmental andsustainability, functionali-ty, design principles, value, interior space, overallquality and workmanship.

The highlight of theawards ceremony was rec-ognizing the top fourOverall Grand Awards andthe Carl Reppun Award.Today’s column will fea-ture the winner of theOverall Grand Award inthe New ResidentialDivision. The winner wasWelch and Weeks LLC for“Hale Nunu.”

The clients wanted tobuild a legacy home in theclassic Hawaii style for

their family on the beach atKahala. The direction ofthe sun and trade winds, captured with passiveenvironmental systemsdesigned to harness natu-ral elements, were themajor driving forces inbuilding a very comfort-able home. The 35,564-square-foot site consists ofa 2,329-square-foot cottageand garage and the 7,860-square-foot main house.

The main house hasnearly 1,700 square feet ofcovered lanai, and theexterior materials includeHardie board siding andtrim to protect the homefrom salt, sun and rain.

Deep roof overhangs keepthe house cool, while mod-ern insulation and radiantbarriers, along with thewood shingles and coppergutters, also work well inthis tropical climate. Avaulted 15-foot-high ceil-

ing in the great room, pocket doors opening toocean views, custom builtcabinets, natural stonecounters and Milgardfiberglass double-glazedwindows are a few of thefeatures in this modern

legacy home that reflectsthe past and welcomes thefuture.

Hawaii is one of the nation’s mostattractive states for home solarelectricity with our year-round

sunshine and generous state incentives. It also has one of the highest rates ofelectricity in the country, making solarelectricity an important option forhomeowners looking for a more afford-able alternative to their rising utilityrates. With so many benefits, it’s nolonger a question of whether or not to“go solar,” but “who do we go with?”and “how can we afford it?”

“We understand that there is a finan-cial barrier for many homeownerslooking into solar,” said Eric Carlson,RevoluSun principal. “That’s why weare so excited about the many new

lease options that provide easy entryinto solar for just about every financialsituation.”

How does solar leasing work?

The leasing process is simple. Ahomeowner signs an agreement to pur-chase cheaper electricity from the solarsystem installed on their roof versuswhat the utility provides them. “Since

the leasing company is in the businessof ‘selling’ electricity, they are incen-tivized to make sure that the system isproperly maintained and serviced,”said Carlson. “It’s a worry-free situa-tion for the homeowner.”

You have to see andfeel the luxury vinylfloors at Wayne’s

LuxePlank luxury vinyl floors alsooffer highly realistic looks —but do so in hardwood colorsand textures. Luxe Plank evencomes in authentic planklengths and widths, withbeveled edges and ends.

Alterna luxury vinyl can beinstalled with or without grout, for a true stone or ceramiclook. Consider hiring anArmstrong-certified, profes-sional installer for Alternasince gluing and grouting areusually skills beyond the aver-age DIY-er. Alterna comes inlarge format (16-inch-by-16-inch) tiles.

If you want a luxury vinylfloor that’s DIY-friendly, take acloser look at Luxe Plank. Youcan install Luxe anywhere inyour home, and since youinstall the planks to each other, and not to the subfloor, theyeasily can go over most exist-ing flooring. You cancontinue moving the planksinto different positions untilthe adhesive starts to set.

Armstrong’s luxury vinylfloors are made to last, and itsvinyl tiles are easy to maintain

and can be installed in anyroom, including bathrooms. Both Luxe Plank and Alterna aremade up of three primary lay-ers. The top layer is a protectivewear layer that provides resist-ance to stains, scratches andscuffs. This wear layer is com-

bined with a clear film layer thatadds more durability and helpsprotect the luxury vinyl flooragainst rips, tears and gouges. The second layer is the printeddesign layer that offers realisticceramic, stone or wood visuals. The bottom layer is the tile

backing, which adds structuralstrength and durability.

Your home is probably the biggestfinancial asset that you own. Unlikea car, computer or big screen, it is an

asset that will appreciate instead of godown in value each year. So, it makesfinancial sense to invest in it, and protectthat investment.

Did you know that Anlin energy-effi-cient doors and windows give a 120-per-cent return on your initial investment? And, like your home, that investment willappreciate year after year.

Windows Hawaii guarantees theinstallation of Anlin doors, windows andsiding for your home for the life of yourhome — a warranty that is transferable ifyou sell it.

But that isn’t the best part. How about aninvestment that grows in value over timeas well as:

• Improves the appearance of your home.Make your home look new with new win-dows and siding. It can benefit from afacelift after 40 years!

• Makes your home more secure. Jalousiewindows are easily broken into. Anlin win-dows are rated tops for security with “cam”locking systems, double-strength glass anddead-bolt locks that allow you to lock yourwindows open so you get the breeze youwant without sacrificing security.

• Maintenance-free. Anlin windows haveNeat glass, which repels dirt and does notwater spot. The Mikron vinyl frames areeasy to clean and do not corrode or pit likealuminum in Hawaii’s salty environment.

• Long lasting. Our acrylic/vinyl siding willlast a lifetime and you will never need topaint again. This siding also adds insula-tion to your home and is a deterrent to ter-mites. Our Hardie cement-board sidinglooks like wood, but will not weather likewood, and is impervious to termites.

• Makes your home more comfortable.Anlin Windows with the dual pane andInfinitE energy coating will keep your

home more cool during the summermonths. If you use air conditioning, youwill save up to 35 percent of your energycosts each month.

It makes sense to invest in your home, improve its appearance and comfort andreduce maintenance and energy costs. CallWindows Hawaii for a free in-homedemonstration and estimate.

When you thinkabout it, a roof islike a mom. It

shelters you from condi-tions that may harm you,and protects your belong-ings and general well-being. In honor of Momthis weekend, take timefor a little roof pamperingwith a free roof inspec-tion by Murakami’sRoofing.

25 years experience

Murakami’s Roofingwill professionally inspectyour roof with an experi-enced eye that comesfrom seeing all types ofroofs in all conditions.Clinton Murakami hasseen it all after years ofroofing work, and he start-ed Murakami’s Roofing 25years ago with his dad.

Murakami said, “Whatmakes my job so fun, evenafter 25 years, is everyroof is a little bit differ-ent. It really makes my

day when I know I’vedone all I can to delivergreat customer service.”

Mold

People often callMurakami and describeone of the most common

problems in Hawaii:mold. Just like in yourshower, your shinglesmay discolor and darkenover time. Aside frombeing unsightly, mold, algae or fungus growth(under your eave line) is a

sign that your roof may beflooded with moisturefrom rain or stopped-upgutters.

What will help?

Washing the roofdown with a zinc treat-ment is a temporary fixat best, and may notaddress the real problem.Applying a protectiveroof coating may helpwith the mold issueswhile cooling your roof, but again, may only be atemporary solution andmask the problem.

Depending on the con-dition of the roof, youmay have to reroof or oth-erwise repair it.Murakami’s Roofing willrecommend the bestcourse of action for yourbudget and provide awritten estimate. If youhave questions, feel freeto call the company.Murakami’s goal is toanswer all of your ques-tions until you are satis-fied and confident in yourdecision.

What customers say

Murakami’s Roofingreceives a lot of positivefeedback from its cus-tomers. Here is a cus-tomer response to thecompany’s services:

Really appreciate yourresponsiveness, the quali-ty, the price, and above all, your follow through tomake sure things weretaken care of.

broken hinges. So werepaired the doors andadded a decorative meshscreen inset to the cen-tral section of shelving. The screen concealssome of the contentswhile adding a touch ofelegance. The old whiteshelves were replacedwith new woodenshelves painted in a richchocolate brown. Thesame color was paintedon the walls behind theshelves to add depth andinterest.

The radiators drew theeye with their chippedand peeling paint. Todisguise them and blendthem into the room’sarchitecture, we design-ed custom radiator cov-ers and painted them afresh ivory color.

Dick and Megan hadalready installed recess-

ed halogen lights in theceiling, so I decided toadd some variety. Weinstalled two sconces oneither side of the fire-place and an elegantchandelier over a gametable in front of one ofthe windows. This area isthe perfect place for the

adults to read the paper, play chess or share a chatand a cup of tea.

Since the familyroom’s windows over-looked the garden, priva-cy was not an issue. Theview was gorgeous, soinstead of covering upthose spectacular leaded

windows, I designedflowing two-tone sheersto frame the glass andbring some of the greatoutdoors inside. In fact, all that greenery outsidethe room inspired mypalette of moss green, bark brown and mustard. These colors are workedinto the room’s furnish-ings and accessories andare set off by the softvanilla cream on thewalls.

To finish off this spec-tacular space, I broughtin a couple of comfyleather chairs and snug-gled them up to the fire-place. A new sectionalsofa, an armoire thatholds lots of toys and anelegant table and chairsfor the adults completedthe look, and pulledeverything together.

Now Dick and Megancan take pleasure in thefamily room they werelooking for.

Some interior design trends are hardto understand. That jagged piece ofcement that is supposedly a chair or

headache-inducing paint color may lookgreat in the glossy pages of a design maga-zine, but would average people really wantit in their own living room?

Fortunately, there is a growing trend ininterior design that is easy to understand, relatable and applicable in almost everyhome — this trend is called “techorating.”

“‘Techorating’ is the blending of tech-nology into the overall design of a room to

create functional, stylish and unique envi-ronments that work well and look great,”said Janna Robinson, technology anddesign expert. “This design trend growsfrom the integral role technology nowplays in our lives.”

Robinson offers some helpful tips forincorporating the techorating trend intoyour home:

“Televisions can now serve many func-tions in our homes, from making a design

statement with a sleek flat screen to pro-viding a focal point for gatherings of familyand friends, to even serving as a hub ofinformation, thanks to Smart TV platformsand increased connectivity,” Robinsonsaid. “Techorating principles take intoaccount the central role a TV plays in theliving room, family room or bedroom.”

Start by considering the aesthetics of theTV itself. Flat screens are popular not onlyfor the superior viewing experience theyprovide, but also for their visual appeal.Manufacturers have taken TV aesthetics tothe next level, offering ultra-slim models.LG has gone even further with its CinemaScreen design, which is a nearly framelessTV that provides a streamlined look.

Next, because more Americans areentertaining at home, it is important tomaximize the viewing experience for themaximum number of viewers. For someTVs, viewing angle can be an issue.Robinson recommended arranging seatingso that everyone has a good view of thescreen, while still allowing traffic to flowfreely around seats. Sectionals and modu-lar sectionals provide flexible seating con-figurations. For smaller spaces, bean bags, decorative poufs and floor pillows can pro-vide extra seating without overpoweringthe space.

Look for TVs that are designed to maxi-mize viewing angles. Next-generation 3DTVs like the Cinema 3D models from LGprovide a wide range of viewing angles in2D and 3D so content display remains

crisp and accurate, even for off-angle view-ing.

Creating the perfect background

Techorating techniques use color anddesign to create a comfortable, functionalbackground for technology. For example, painting the wall behind your TV a darkercolor (like chocolate brown) not onlyhelps with distracting glares, but also givesthe illusion of depth to the space.

Similarly, dressing up bare walls, floorsand wooden furniture with varying textureand fabrics such as area rugs and curtainscan help absorb sound and improve the lis-tening quality in a room. Don’t overdo it,though; too much carpeting and heavy cur-tains can make sound seem muffled.Instead, add some bookshelves or evenhung art to create reflective surfaces thatwill help break up sound waves. A mixtureof surfaces and materials will provide thebest sound quality.

Keep in mind, Robinson said, that youdon’t have to completely redecorate yourroom to achieve techorating harmony.

“I’m a big fan of repurposing and meld-ing old with new,” she says. “If your couchhas a solid frame, update it by reupholster-ing it, or try a new decorative pillow cover. If you have existing furniture that needs alittle sprucing up, paint or stain it for afresh new look.”

If you have a dull andhard-to-clean concretesurface in your garage

or workspace, Lokahi’sGarage Experts Flooringwill transform your dulland dreary concrete floorinto a stunning, seamlessmasterpiece that will out-shine other comparablesystems for years. Whenincorporating the extremegloss polyurea topcoat into

your finish, rest assuredthat you are getting theabsolute best-looking cleartopcoat available in thecountry. Our polyurea top-coat has an incredible glosswhile providing extremechemical and abrasionresistance, which is why itwill continue to shinewhen others start to fade.

In 1999, Garage ExpertsFlooring revolutionized

the garage floor coatingindustry by introducing atwo-step flake systemwhen all other systemswere four or more steps. This was accomplished bycreating a proprietaryepoxy that “wicks” deepinto the concrete, creatinga bond that is three timesstronger than ordinaryepoxy or poliaspartic sys-tems over concrete. In fact,

this revolutionary systemwill withstand at least 8pounds of MVE (MoistureVapor Emission) pressure, while others fail at 3pounds.

Additionally, all ourclear topcoats will not yel-low from sun exposure, and most are under 10VOC (volatile organiccompounds), making itsafer for the planet’s

ozone. And when we sayour clear topcoats are “hot-tire resistant,” we mean it.They will not yellow, dark-en, stain or lift from hottires. You can expect toeasily wipe up any tiremarks for years to come. When other products saythey are “hot-tire resist-ant,” they mean it won’tpeel. With Garage ExpertsFlooring, it’s as if your car

was never parked in thegarage!

New advances in ourtechnology allow GarageExperts Flooring to beinstalled in one day. In2009, we introduced anadditive that reduces thelong drying time to onlythree hours. Now you canget the same one-dayinstall results of a poluas-

In our fast-paced and chaotic lives, we’re alwaysseeking ways to relax and de-stress from the day.For some, that means watching a favorite TV show,

having a nice glass of wine, or even a massage at thespa, but we often forget about our homes and theimpact of its design on relaxation.

Kelly Edwards, designer and lifestyle expert, andWaterpik suggest the following tips for creating relax-ation-inspired home decor:

Kitchen

The kitchen is often called the heart of the home, soit’s wise to invest in kitchen materials that are betterfor you and your family. Caesarstone and Silestonecountertops are hypoallergenic, non-porous, resistantto stains, ultra strong and always look elegant andamazing.

Consider using streamlined high-gloss laminatefronts on cabinets for a sleek and clean look, and usepull-out drawers behind each cabinet for more storagespace. Remember, being organized can make anyonefeel less stressed.

Bathroom

The bathroom is a place visited at the start and endof your day. By simply changing your shower head, you can turn a regular shower into a truly relaxing,spa-like experience. The stylish Waterpik EasySelectshower head, for example, has a spray selector locatedright on the handle, so you can change the spray set-tings from circular massage to full-body coveragewithout having to reach through the water stream.

Use monochromatic colors to sooth you from the

moment you walk in and opt for striking marble orglass tiles. By installing a glass shower enclosure, you’ll be able to show off the gorgeous tiles, updatethe look of your bathroom and make the room looklarger.

Living room

A natural material like grass cloth wallpaper is agreat way to add color and texture to your walls inyour living room. It has a very relaxed and sophisticat-ed appeal to it. Paint the walls a color that conveys thefeeling of relaxation like light shades of cream, white, green or greige (a combination of gray and beige).

Mix in a few natural elements like wood chairs andtables, cozy blankets and fresh flowers, and you’llhave a place that will feel comfortable to come hometo every day.

Bedroom

Pick colors that are easy on the eye, like the bluesand green, to evoke a sense of “rest.” Change harshoverhead lighting for architecturally interesting light-ing elements such as library sconces; place one oneach side of the bed for the perfect reading lights.

Trade out your old worn-out shades for some natu-ral wood blinds or bamboo shades and follow the lookup by adding soft curtains to block out the light for arestful night’s sleep.

For any space, a non-cluttered area will help youachieve a relaxed state of mind at home. Keep in mindthat being comfortable doesn’t mean being trendy;simply create your own style and do what makes youfeel your best.

understand who the com-pany works with and ifthey have a solid trackrecord. Also, some com-panies may say that thequality of the panels doesnot matter; this is wrong.

Panels must work at thehighest efficiency to cap-ture the most power, solesser-grade panels willproduce at a lower level, thereby increasing whatyou owe each month. Inother words, poor per-

formance in solar panelswill mean a higher cost tothe homeowner to com-pensate for the panels’inability to generate ade-quate power.

“We’ve heard storiesabout homeowners notknowing what type of pan-els they receive,” Carlsonsaid. “At RevoluSun, wewalk our customersthrough all the optionsand help them select thebest choice, based on qual-ity, to achieve their sav-

References are important whenselecting a contractor for yourhome building project. During

the process of choosing your contrac-tor, meeting and talking to families thathave been through the process of build-ing will give you a good indication ofwhat to expect for your own home proj-ect. It is ideal to have a non-biasedreport from someone whose shoes youwill be wearing soon.

There are a few different ways toreceive this information. A majority ofcompanies follow the traditional way of

making it available toyou. Atlas Constructionhas found unique waysto give you the informa-tion that you need tomake an informed deci-sion.

There are differentways to get a referencefor a potential contractor. The mostcommon one would be a letter that aperson composes at the end of a proj-ect, giving you a general idea of howthe contractor performed. Oftentimes

these letters tend to be very general, with no details. The progress ofInternet websites and streaming videocapabilities allow Atlas Construction tohave video testimonies on its website, which you may view to hear first-handaccounts from families whom the com-

pany has done work for. Another less-common

way of receiving a refer-ence is by actually speak-ing with a previous client.Usually this is done overthe phone, which gives youthe opportunity to ask spe-cific questions that youhave about the contractor

and his or her work. Atlas Constructiongives you this opportunity by allowingyou to select from a complete list ofpast clients whom the contractor hasdone work for — with more than 100

families to choose from. Still, anotherunique way Atlas Construction helpsyou learn about contractors is by intro-ducing you to families who have gonethrough the building process.

Atlas Construction offers you a wayto meet families and individuals, andspeak with them directly. Each monthat a contractor’s open house, the fami-lies are available to greet you at theirnewly built homes and share their expe-riences with you. This allows you tohear firsthand what happens during aconstruction project and what you mayexpect on your own home project. Thisunique way of allowing potential fami-lies to access reference information onthe company becomes a useful tool inchoosing a contractor.

Visit Atlas Construction and theKuroda family at their open house onSaturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20.

Crowded cabinets,cluttered countersand nonexistent

prep space. Sound famil-iar? For many homeown-

ers, small kitchen spacesmake everyday use andentertaining a source offrustration. While asmall kitchen can pose

many challenges, it does-n’t have to stop you fromenjoying the space. Froma full-scale home renova-tion to some simple andquick fixes, there aremany options to help yourealize your kitchen’sfull potential and trans-form it into a welcomingplace where you’ll wantto spend time.

Size up your space

Before starting anyproject, big or small, eval-uate the space and deter-mine how you want it towork for you. Sometimessolutions for one issuecan provide an answerfor other challenges. Forexample, by adding amoveable island to createadditional prep space, you’ve now also got anarea for friends and fami-ly to gather when youentertain.

Don’t forget to consid-er long-term goals foryour home. Is this astarter home or some-where you plan to stayand grow in? This canmake a difference in the

type of projects you wantto take on.Make a plan

When you’ve decidedon the scope of your proj-ect, it’s time to determinewhat resources you’llneed to make it happen.Online tools likeMerillat’s Step-By-StepKitchen Planner can helpyou get an idea of whatelements you’re lookingfor and how they’ll workin your space. Talkingwith a design professionalcan help you decide if youneed additional supportor if your project can becompleted on your own.

“When faced with asmall space, it can behard to see the designpossibilities,” said SarahReep, director of design-er relations and educa-tion for Merillat Cab-inets. “A professionaldesigner can bring clarityand simplicity to any typeof home change. In manycases, their skills andtraining can help revealsolutions you never evenknew existed.”

Get organized

If you’re remodeling, look for cabinets to helpcontain clutter and keepcountertops clear. Stor-age solutions such aspull-out spice racks, in-drawer cutting boards, drawer organizers anddividers keep all yourcooking utensils out ofthe way but close athand, and can make lifein the kitchen easier foreveryday use and enter-taining.

“In the kitchen, espe-cially a small one, everyinch counts,” said Reep.“Planning smart storagesolutions in your cabi-netry is a great way tobring style and function-ality to even the smallestspaces.”

If a few quick fixes areall you can take on, havesome fun with it byresearching solutions inmagazines, on designblogs or even throughnew resources likePinterest. Additionally, look for creative ways tomake the most of yourcabinets and drawers by

placing items close towhere they’ll be used. Change the focus

Whether it’s an area todisplay your wine collec-tion with a built-in stor-age option like thoseoffered by MerillatCabinets or showing offdecorative dishes andfamily treasures withglass-front cabinetry, drawing attention toitems that show yourinterests and personalitywill remove the focusfrom the actual size ofyour space.

When the weather is warm, Mother Naturebecomes a shameless show-off. From clear, bright skies to lush green grass and vibrant

blooms, the outdoors go bold and beautiful. So is it anysurprise that this season’s outdoor decor is followingsuit?

Bold is the watchword for beautiful outdoor decorat-ing this year, and it’s easy to find items — from furni-ture to wallpaper — that play to this theme.

“Bright colors, bold patterns and showpiece acces-sories are top trends in outdoor decor this year,” saysDani Nichols, a design-trends watcher for wallpaperpurveyor Murals Your Way. “Whether your personalstyle is modern and chic or country and homey, youcan find design elements that both fit your style andfollow this trend.”

If you’re looking to add pizzazz to your outdoordecor this year, here are some ideas for bringing thebold and beautiful trend to your patio, deck or back-yard:

Fire and water

Celebrating the elements is a recurring theme indecor, both indoor and outdoor. Where better to fetetwo of the most powerful ones — fire and water —than in your outdoor design? Color is an easy-to-change, low-cost way to incorporate the appeal ofthese elements into decor.

Adding a fire pit or a water feature such as a foun-tain, however, can be even more satisfying. Whetheryou opt for a large, copper fire pit on tall legs or a sim-ple clay chiminea, incorporating fire into your outdoorliving spaces boldly creates warmth, drama andambiance. A water feature, whether a wall-mountedwaterfall or a free-standing fountain, also is a powerful

statement — one that can generate calm or mirth, depending on the style, setting and circumstances.Home improvement stores now carry a variety of firepits, chimineas and water fountains to enhance out-door environments.

Wall power

In recent years, murals and wallpaper have beengaining popularity for outdoor spaces. Technologylike Luxuriant Fabric-Backed Vinyl by Murals YourWay, makes it easy to decorate outdoors. The durablematerial goes on virtually any flat surface and can han-dle the elements when a layer or two of polyurethaneis added on top of the outdoor mural.

This season’s wallpapers feature bright, saturatedcolors and eye-popping patterns. Whether you’relooking for an intensely hued geometric pattern or astriking nature scene, you can find wallpaper optionsthat mesh well with the bold design trend.

Color and customization

Color sets the mood, and can act as a foundation oraccent in virtually any design scheme. This year, boldhues are popping up in nearly every element of out-door decor, from vivid metallics and exotic reds, tolush blues and boisterous yellows. Orange is particu-larly hot this season, with everyone from paint makersto furniture designers incorporating every shade oforange imaginable — from tangerine to pumpkin — intheir designs.

Color customization is another exciting aspect ofthe boldness trend. Homeowners wanting a profound-ly personal outdoor environment can customize theinterplay of color in their decor. Online, it’s easy tofind companies that will create fabrics and upholstery

from a color or pattern sample submitted by a home-owner. You can even color match your wallpaper withcompanies like Murals Your Way, which offer shop-pers the ability to choose the pattern they prefer andalter the color to a myriad of choices.

This season, if you’re seeking a look that’s both on-trend and timeless, emulate Mother Nature and gobold. Your outdoor living space will be a celebrationof nature, and the perfect stage for all your outdoorcelebrations.

BACKPAGECOVERSTORY

With summer rightaround the cor-ner, it is a great

time to evaluate yourhome’s energy consump-tion. Many homeownersand residents are unawareof the numerous fixes onecan make to save on theirmonthly electric bill.Energy Star appliances areeligible for Hawaii Energyrebates, so when shopping,be sure to look for the blueEnergy Star logo.

Here are a few other tips to helpsave you money:

Lighting is one of the first placesyou can look to save money. Many ofyou have heard of Compact

Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs), but howmany of you actually use them? CFLshave been known to use up to 20 to 35percent less electricity and lastapproximately eight to 15times longer than standardincandescent bulbs.

Obviously, cooling isa very important needin our climate. Hawaiidoes tend to gethot, and air con-ditioners play alarge part inour lives. Butan efficientand adequateceiling fancan provideample coolingin your home,as well as saveyou money. Making sure your fan issized properly for your room is veryimportant when choosing a ceilingfan.

If you must use an air condition-ing unit, using a ductless, split-unitsystem is the best way to go. Split-

unit systems are far more efficientthan both conventional win-

dow units and central-air systems. Older

everyday appli-ances such aswashing machinesand refrigeratorsalso could be con-

suming more elec-tricity than theyshould. Newer, up-to-date modelscould save you20 to 40 per-cent on energy

costs, and mightbe eligible for a

Hawaii Energy rebate.A home energy assessment,

also known as a home energy audit, also can be performed to assess howmuch energy your home consumes

and to evaluate what measures youcan take to make your home moreenergy-efficient. EnergyPro Hawaiioffers energy assessments and willtake the time to pinpoint energy con-sumption problems in your home.
