In a time when sustainability and victory gardens–which graced the backyards and schoolyards of Hawai’i during both WW I and WW II, are on our minds, Kauamanu (Hawai’ian for rain bird) is achieving just that. Located in the historical section of Hana called Kaeleku, this legendary district was inhabited by ancient Hawai’ians as far back as the 15th Century. The immense historical community is evidenced by Pi’ilanihale, Hawai’i’s largest heiau (place of worship) which was unveiled to modern man as recently as the 1970’s. Early Hawai’ians selected Kaeleku for its perfect amounts of rain and sun for growing massive volumes of food for the vast ancient Hawai’ian community. There is plenty to keep you busy in the Kaeleku/Hana area. Healthy bike rides on less traveled roads, walks to the nearby lava tube, flower farms, or the botanical treasure Kahanu Gardens easily keep the district’s residents fit.
