PITT TOWN, a little historyPitt Town is one of the fi ve ‘Macquarie Towns’ established by Governor Macquarie in 1810.
It was named after William Pitt the Younger, the 18th Century British Prime Minister.
A site for a village was laid out in 1811 but developed very slowly and was relocated to its present location by 1815.
By 1841 there were only 36 houses in the town due to its location being too far from the rich river fl ats and the consequent long daily trek for farmers to their holdings.
The street names of Pitt Town bear testament to the 1808 British Cabinet, including Eldon, Grenville, Bathurst, Liverpool, Buckingham, Chattham and Chandos Streets. (Chandos Street being later renamed ‘Church Street’.
Pitt Town has retained many historic buildings such as the Bird In Hand Inn which is situated in the village centre.

9 December 2016 – 5 February 2016 Hawkesbury Regional Gallery, Windsor - All Dressed Up - The focus of this special summer holiday exhibition is the politics, culture, drama and play of clothing, costume and disguise through history as well as in contemporary society. The exhibition will feature a number of contemporary Australian artists as well as historical and contemporary fashion pieces from the fabulous Darnell Collection and The Hawkesbury Regional Museum Costume Collection.One of the feature artists is Jacqui Stockdale, whose compelling photographic portraits refl ect her ongoing fascination with history, mythology and identity. Dressed in costumes and masks Stockdale’s characters are layered with cultural references.Also featured is Michael Cook, a Brisbane-based photomedia artist of Bidjara heritage. Cook’s photographs restage colonial-focused histories and re-image the contemporary reality of indigenous populations. Cook invites viewers to speculate Indigenous cultures living at the forefront, even a majority, rather than manipulated to live within the confi nes of a white man’s world. For over 70 years, Doris Darnell, a Quaker from Pennsylvania, pursued a passion for fashion by collecting vintage clothes and accessories. The Darnell Collection grew out of donations and gifts from her family’s wide circle of friends and acquaintances around the world. Importantly, most of the items came with accompanying letters, photographs and stories which linked them to the original owners or donors and often to the occasions to which they were worn.Charlotte Smith inherited her godmother Doris’s collection in 2004. It has continued to grow through further bequests to over 8000 pieces representing 32 different countries and is considered the largest private vintage clothing collection in Australia. Included are many internationally recognised 20th century designers such Dior, Chanel, Balenciaga, Zandra Rhodes, Westwood, Versace, and Dolce & Gabana.

Business Services Antiques, Curios & HistoryAntiques, Curios & HistoryA brief history of European
settlement in the HawkesburyThe Darug people lived in relative isolation in the Hawkesbury for thousands of years until the English established a penal colony at Sydney Cove in 1788.Due to food shortages in the new colony, it became desirable to discover good farming land. Governor Phillip fi rst explored the Hawkesbury River by boat in July 1789. The fi rst European settlement in the area happened when twenty two families were granted farms on Pitt Town Bottoms, in January 1794.As the Aborigines were moved from their land to make way for farms there was serious confl ict between the natives and the settlers between 1795 and 1805.As white settlement expanded due to the emancipation of more convicts and the growing population of white settlers there was confl ict again with displaced natives in 1816.There were two disastrous Hawkesbury fl oods in February and March of 1806 which affected the food supply for the entire colony.At the age of 19, Andrew Thompson arrived in Sydney as a convict with the Second Fleet in 1792.Thompson Square in Windsor is named after Andrew Thompson. He was appointed to the police service in 1793 but became one of the colony’s most successful businessmen.In 1796 Governor Hunter appointed Thompson to the Green Hills (later Windsor) and he rose to Chief Constable, a position he held until 1808. In the 1806 Hawkesbury fl oods Thompson saved the lives of 101 residents, plucking them from their rooftops in one of his boats.Thompson’s burial in 1810 was the fi rst burial in the cemetery of St Matthews Church in Windsor, where his tombstone may still be seen today.
St Matthews Church of England in Windsor was
designed by Francis Greenway and built
between the years 1817 and 1820 by convicts
using sandstock bricks and sandstone.
