About the Directory

 A wonderful place to live, the Hawkesbury River’s beauty is matched only by the passionate people who

live on her shores. What if we could add to this environment a thriving local ‘economy’ where sharing was

even easier?

By bringing together interests, knowledge, skills and resources that residents and local business owners

are willing to share, we hope the Hawkesbury River Community Directory does just that.

The Directory was inspired in 2010 by the simplest of needs.

My motor scooter broke down in Brooklyn and I had to get it towed to Hornsby for repair. It turned out to be

a sparkplug job that someone could have easily xed locally, had I known who to go to.

From a costly journey to the garage to the creation of this Directory, it’s been an inspiring ride. In response

to the initial idea, people have shared with great warmth and enthusiasm the more than 500 ‘things’ now

included in the following pages – from a speedboat for emergency use, to people willing to teach rst aid

or how to make a patchwork quilt. Contributions have come from people across a range of ages, locations

and experience.

Whether or not you have a listing in the Directory, we hope you feel encouraged to use and engage with

the wonderful and very practical range of things on offer.

How to use the Directory

The Directory information is split into six sections:

1. Events, Groups, Networks and Newsletters – providing a calendar and contacts for local activities;

2. Interests - topics, hobbies and passions around which people would like to connect;

3. Knowledge - things about which people know a little or a lot;4. Skills - things people can physically do or services they can offer;

5. Resources - stuff people have around their house, backyard/garden, garage, boat/car or online;

6. Contacts - the means by which to contact anyone who has provided a listing earlier in the Directory.

For each listing, contributors have noted how available they want to make themselves, as well as the cost,

if any, that they’d like to associate with the offering.

Thanks to

Getting the Directory to this point has relied on the hard work of 17 volunteers who compiled the

questionnaire, delivered it to more than 750 householders, and helped with the design and printing.

Big thanks to Angela Brinn, Arnell Muldrock, Dan McNally, Denise O’Regan, Gary Robertson,

Jess Boyden, Jess Watkins, Jo Scarsbrick, Linda Lobendahn, Mark Franklin, Mel Anderson, Michelle

 Armstrong, Myff Sharp, Natascha Arens, Pete Davis, Sashe Fischer and Victoria Dupres. Particular thanks

to Jon Watkins for creating the design for the Directory. Big thanks to our printing sponsors: Jocelyn

Chacon & Bendigo Bank Berowra, Robert Arnold & Brooklyn Community Association, Jeff Rudge &

Hawkesbury River Real Estate, Ian Allan, Caroline Schubert & IMMI Pre-loved designer clothing andbric-a-brac, Ron Barelle & Island Design and Joshua Smith & JJs of Brooklyn. Thanks, too, to those who

gave prizes for the launch celebrations: Bert and Anke Kupers; Denise O’Regan; Kim and Rick Wilson;

and Trish Cox. Thanks to Cindy and Rob Corkery for their help with the questionnaire printing; and Trish

Cox for sharing the space at Broken Spines Bookshop in Brooklyn, so freely.

To The Future

We have initially opted for a physical book over a website because we want to make this Directory really

tangible. If it proves valuable to people, a web platform allowing for user-editing may well emerge.

It’s also exciting to note that other communities in Australia and abroad would like to use our simple model

to do something similar!

Here’s to making living on the Hawkesbury even easier, more enjoyable and truly sustainable.
