Our Current Neighbourhood Priorities

1. Anti Social Behaviour - There have been neighbourhood issues in Eastwood Close, Hayling Island. These properties are owned and rented out by Guinness Hermitage. The problems arising appear to be mainly ASB - noise.

2. Burglary - Dwelling- Community Priority created for the series of Burglary dwellings and breaks to sheds, garages and beach huts that have been occurring on Hayling Island since the 8th April 2016 to date.

3. Anti Social Behaviour—Reducing anti-social behaviour in Tournerbury Lane. This has been highlighted as an area of increasing demand after an ongoing neighbour dispute.

You Said…. We did…. ASB– Southwood Road

You said…. Increase in ASB reports linked to the Southwood Road area. We did…. It was identified that there were various locations along Southwood Road where ASB issues were occurring. These locations have been approached depending on the specific needs of those involved. Police have been working closely with a housing management company with regards to conflict between two neighbours. This is an ongoing piece of work which is now mainly being managed by the housing provider as they are better placed than the police to deal with the issue. Another resident of Southwood Road was supported in a housing move managed by other agencies but supported by the police. This is a family who needed greater levels of support and as a result of this multi-agency approach they have greater independence and ability to live their life. This positive outcome has also reduced demand on police resources and reduced ASB. There was a final location where again the police were able to signpost the correct agencies to support an individual meaning a reduction in demand on the police. Although Southwood Road is no longer a Neighbourhood priority for the police we will ensure though our ‘business as usual’ work that we follow up on these actions, as we aim to reduce the ASB and demand further and continue to support the individuals involved.

Tell Us Your Priorities…..

Every quarter we collate community views on local priorities, we need your views to understand what you currently see as important for the police in your area. Please complete our really short Your Voice Counts survey by following this link:

missing a number plate we would really like to know about it. As a result of these burglaries we have increased our night time presence on the island. Members of the neighbourhood policing team have changed their duties so that they are working into the night, our response and patrol teams are defaulting patrols to the island when they are not being deployed elsewhere and we are seeking support from some our specialist teams such as roads policing unit and firearms cars in a bid to try and locate our offender(s). Please help by doing all you can to ensure you are not targeted as a victim and you report anything you think may be suspicious. In the last month I have been out on patrol with both PCSO Strawn and PC Reeves on Hayling Island and, as always when working with the Hayling team, have been really impressed with their knowledge of the local community and the contacts they have. It’s always great to see the team in action and feel reassured that they deliver a great service to the local community. Finally I want to mention the 999 day on 26th June at Beachlands. This was an event originally started by the local team but management of it has since been taken over by the community responders on the island. This is always a great day and I know the team will be looking forward to meeting any of you that attend. Dave Dave Humphries Sector Inspector.

Burglaries Sadly we find ourselves dealing with another series of burglaries on Hayling Island. Those of you who have signed up to Hampshire Alerts will no doubt already be aware of this. Those of you who haven't I would urge you to visit www.hampshirealert.co.uk and sign up so that you get local crime information. Our current series of burglaries centres around two specifics. The first is the presence of high value cars or vans, this is what our offender(s) are seeking to steal. The second is the presence of euro cylinder locks in upvc doors, which is how our offender(s) is getting into the house to steal the keys to the car. Consequently there are two things we would urge you to do, firstly if you have a high value vehicle and can put it in a garage overnight please do so. Secondly if you have euro cylinder locks, which is the most common form of lock in upvc, aluminium and composite doors please consider changing them to an anti snap lock. If you want more information on this please have a look at www.locksmiths.co.uk/about/public/cylinder-snapping/ if you want more information on this. Whilst we don’t want to alarm you all, and would stress Hayling Island is still a really safe place to live, we do want you to be alert. It’s possible that our offender(s) are reccying addresses during the day to return later at night so if you see suspicious behaviour from people on foot or in vehicles around your address please let us know (and vehicle registration numbers are very useful if you can get it.) Also suspicious activity at night is something we want to know about straight away. In relation to vehicles that have been recovered from these types of crimes often the number plates have been stolen from another vehicle. Commonly the number plates front and back are different and the original owners of them have therefore not reported them as stolen believing that it had fallen off. If you find you are

PCSO Strawn (pictured below talking to a local taxi company) has delivered the first in a series of talks to Public Service Providers highlighting Hampshire Constabulary’s Operation Makesafe. The talks are designed to educate service providers around the subject of Child Sexual Exploitation. Making them aware of how they can help in reporting and safeguarding young people that maybe using their services. As well as highlighting the risks to Young People it also helps to remind the service provider of their legal responsibilities and the possible impacts on the business. More talks a being planned across the coming months to Hotels, B&B’s and Taxi’s to help ensure that the message is delivered across Hayling Island

We have had another busy month, especially since the sun has come out! Apart from our normal work meeting our community priorities, we have all had to pull together as a team to meet our safeguarding commitments. We have been carrying out domestic safeguarding visits and looking to try and prevent missing episodes of our most regular missing people. This essential role is vitally important work that is both difficult to predict and is time consuming in managing our multi-agency efforts to mitigate any risks. We will still be managing speeding in the background and as the saying goes, 'Suns out, Guns out!' so you can expect to see more of the team at our speeding hotspots. We have recently had some early morning sessions in Northney following complaints and if you feel the Police need to target a particular area, please complete one of our 'Your Voice Counts' questionnaires or speak to one of the team. We have recently put in an appearance at the Hayling Island donkey derby, which was a fun event and we were well received. It was also useful as a rehearsal for the 999 Day, which is our next community event on the 26th June at the Beachlands fields. I now know how difficult it is to erect the tent single handed so I'll be sure to get some help on the day. Thank you to the member of public who took pity on me and helped me out at the Derby!

PC Debbie Surridge has attended a multi-agency meeting to help out a vulnerable female in the community. Debbie has also worked very hard in achieving her bronze leader Duke of Edinburgh qualification (pictured below on an assignment in Wales). She has committed significant amounts of her own time voluntarily to achieve this and the qualification will ultimately support the Police Cadets which Debbie helps to run. This is whilst dealing with live incidents including domestics, and trying to resolve a long term neighbour dispute by speaking to all agencies and working together.

PC Sarah Reeves has provided reassurance to a couple of the aggrieved parties involved in the attempted burglaries on Hayling Island, as well as continuous work liaising with the Management of The Crescent on The Seafront to reduce crime and Anti-Social Behaviour. Sarah recently attended an attempted burglary at a house in Eaststoke Avenue. She was well supported in this first response by local colleagues, including Insp Dave Humphries, who was on patrol with Sarah at the time. As well as specialist police units and local response officers. We are still keen to ensure we are accessible to the community and able to engage at key events. As such Sarah attended the Donkey Derby. This provided us a venue to speak with the local community and assess current concerns and issues. Please remember though you can sign up for Hampshire Alerts for FREE to keep in touch with officers and receive key updates.

Sarah Reeves is shown here on Two4Tuesday patrol with Inspector Dave Humphries.
