President’s Message—Don’t Believe the Hype!

As we begin the holiday seasons, I want to share one important message – Don’t Be-

lieve the Hype! (This does relate to quilting, keep reading). The ads on TV would have us all believe that we are frantically busy (or should be) doing all kinds of things from now until January. For some of us, that may be true. But for many of us, we fall somewhat short of frantically busy – even not busy at all. Whether you are super busy, busy now and then, or have more time than usual on your hands during this season, below are a few tips to help you along (now for the quilting part):

Don’t overcommit on handmade items for the holidays. I usually don’t make any holiday gifts. For me, the deadlines are stressful and take all the joy out of mak-ing things. Some people love making things. Know your limits and realistic avail-able time when deciding to make your gifts (or start in March). I have found my kids all want money anyway (easy to wrap).

Use quilting as a treat to yourself during the holidays. Have a simple project pre-pared and ready to go in your sewing space. You can run in there for a few minutes here and there and relax doing something you like. Or spend all day on it (my favorite thing). Find something easy you like (make a community service quilt using 9-patches, for example). Tackle some UFOs. If you have more time or prefer a challenge, try something different, harder or new. Bonnie Hunter has an annual Mystery Quilt she rolls out the day after Thanksgiving so people who aren’t too busy have something fun to work on (http://quiltville.blogspot.com/). This year it is called On Ringo Lake. Or do our Mystery Quilt (see the newsletters for the steps). Or make that challenging pattern you have always wanted to try. Having it all ready to go and easy to access is the key.

Reach out to others. Most of us assume everyone is too busy to do things from mid-November through the beginning of January. Some normal activities are cancelled or not scheduled during that time. Sometimes people are more available in December than other months or they need a break from holiday fun (or chores). So if you have some time, attend things you don’t normally go to (Big Bee, Saturday Bee, Boutique Bee, Community Service Bee – see the calendar). Be proactive - call a friend or two and get together for lunch, a trip to a quilt shop or some quilting. Hanging out with quilting friends is part of the fun of being a quilter. time. Sometimes people are more availa-ble in December than other months or they need a break from holiday fun (or chores). So if you have some time, attend things you don’t normally go to (Big Bee, Saturday Bee, Boutique Bee, Community Service Bee – see the calendar). Cindy Grisdela will be with us in January for a Lecture and a Workshop! "Playing With Colors" lecture at the January 4, 2018 meeting Cindy is an award-winning artist who’s happiest in her studio surrounded by piles of colorful fabrics. In this lecture and trunk show, she’ll use examples of her work over the last 25 years to take away some of the mystery about choosing colors effectively for your quilts. Not sure what colors “go” together? This is the lecture to reduce your stress about color! "Angled Stripe Table Runner" & "Taking the Fear out of Curved Piecing" workshop on January 5, 2018 Cindy will give us a "2-for-1" workshop, showing us how to create improvisationally (no patterns) using solids, shot cotton, or even patterned fabric. Do one or both techniques to work on table runners, small wall hangings, pillow tops, or just learn the techniques to use later. See details in the attached work-shop flyer packet. Take the Fear Out of Curved Piecing – make a modern Drunkard’s Path – style table runner with no pins and no matching seams.

April 6, 2018 Workshop The "Flower Power" workshop has been canceled due to low registration numbers. A new workshop has been scheduled in its place. "Shimmering Triangles" workshop on April 6, 2018 with Julia Graves Join Julia and make this gorgeous quilt that gives the effect of water rippling in a stream. Information about CAMP HIGHROAD for newbies to help you make the decision of which

Spring Retreat to choose.

Camp Highroad is a church camp and it is truly a camp in the woods, so there may be bugs

around. Either ignore them or kill and dispose of them. Oak Lodge is a large log building with

a newer cement block section added on for the bedrooms. Think dorm room, not hotel.

All the bedrooms have twin size beds, many are bunks. We only count the lower ones. Up-

per are used for storage. Many of the mattresses were new last year. They are covered with

plastic which can be very chilly at night coming thru a sheet. Please plan to bring more than

1 layer to sleep on and also more than 1 layer to keep you cozy. Sleeping bags work well, if

you have one. (I have an old suitcase packed with my flannel patchwork sheets, a mattress

pad and a twin size memory foam pad, just for this retreat.)

There are 2 bathroom areas, as we also utilize the men’s. There are shower stalls with a

dressing area at the stall. You need to bring your own showering supplies, including towels.

Or lots of baby wipes. LOL

The main work room is in the large lodge room. There is a fireplace at one end of it and

there are many windows with a bucolic view. These windows also make the room warm dur-

ing the sunny daylight and cool after dark. The lighting in this room is not the best unless the

sun is out. So you will want to consider bringing a work lamp with you for your space.

Machine quilters will be sharing an 8 ft. long table. I strongly urge you to bring a small

(approx. 20” x 30”) folding table to increase your work space. The long tables will be in

groups of 4 facing each other, so you only have access from 1 side.

The chairs are classic straight backed chairs (not folding) and a cushion for your bottom or

back is helpful.

Hand Quilters, there are a few cushier chairs, rocking chairs, loveseat and sofa near the fire-

place for you and socializing. A small folding table (36” L max) will be helpful to you also for

your accessories. Some of the hand quilters also bring a foot stool.

There is a beverage station at the kitchen end of the main room. Water, lemonade, coffee,

tea, cocoa, and a microwave are available 24/7. There is also a refrigerator in the foyer hall

for any personal items you’d like to bring to supplement the provided buffet meals.

Spring Retreat – Hampton Inn – Winchester Thursday, March 22 – Sunday, March 25 1204 Berryville Avenue, Winchester, Virginia, 22601, 540-678-4000 Attendees can opt to attend for a shorter period - Friday, March 23 – Sunday, March 25 This will be a 4 day, 3 night retreat (with the option of 3 day, 2 night – Fri-Sun). The retreat cost is $30 per person regardless of the number of days you are attending. We apologize for the overlap with spring break for some schools but it is hard to work around all the various possible conflicts. Hotel rooms are $86 per night and include breakfast. If you choose to share a room with a friend, this will bring your rate to $43/night (half the cost). You make your own arrangements with room-mates (if desired. You call the hotel directly to make your reservations and indicate you are with the Haymarket Quilters Unlimited group to get our group rate (phone number is 540-678-4000). Only breakfast is included with your room rate. Lunch and Dinner are “on your own.” You can bring food from home, go out, order delivery, etc. There are many options available in the area. This is similar to how things worked at the Hilton Garden Inn last year. We will try and plan a (voluntary) Pizza Party Dinner at the hotel for those interested in delivery pizza to share one night. The $30 fee is required when signing up to hold your space. Sign-ups will begin at 2 p.m. on Thurs-day, December 7th, by email to Sue Heisler ([email protected]) (with payment made at the meeting that evening or mailed to Sue Heisler, 16148 Green Bay Street, Haymarket, VA 20169) or you can sign up at or after the December meeting on the 7th. Sign-ups are first come, first served. We do not anticipate that we will run out of space but be sure and sign up as soon as possi-ble to make sure you get in. This retreat is what we call a “hotel retreat” where you are staying in a traditional hotel with hotel

amenities (hotel room with a bath, either 2 beds or one king, TV, internet, fitness center, etc.). You

don’t need to bring any linens or towels. The facility is handicapped accessible and there are handi-

capped equipped rooms (limited number, available upon request when making reservations). The

quilting room is a large ballroom and each member will have their own table (we will do as many 8 foot

as we can, depending on the number of attendees, we may have to use some 6 foot tables). The room

is large enough that we should be able to accommodate as many members as are interested in attend-

ing. Members attending the Highroads Retreat are welcome to attend this one as well (you are not lim-

ited to one retreat this Spring).

Prior to the retreat, we will be asking you who you would like to sit near so be thinking about that. It is

easier if seating is arranged ahead of time so it doesn’t matter when you arrive. We will also be com-

municating to attendees with other information. We are looking forward to a wonderful Spring retreat

Scrap Happy 2, Mystery Quilt Part 4

With the Holiday Season upon us, I’ve decided this month’s assignment will be simple Cutting Instructions! I rec-

ommend that you pick up a box of standard size Sandwich baggies to keep your “Cut Sets” organized. You will use

a total of 12 clear baggies for this month’s assignment.

First, you will need to pull out those 12 sets of Four Patch blocks you made last month. For EACH set of Patch

blocks you will cut:

(4) Solid Fabric 3” squares. The color should CONTRAST your 4 patch blocks. For example if your patch block is

red – use a solid navy, gray, black, lighter or darker solid red etc. etc. Batik, ditsy dots and tone on tone prints

work well if you prefer not to use solid fabric.

(1) Companion Fabric cut into a 3 and 3/8” square. This fabric should match or compliment your patch block.

(6) Background Fabric 3” squares.

Here is an example of ONE Sub Set of cut fabrics. (place them in a baggie)

Here is how I cut into my layer cake squares to create my Companion Prints:

I sorted my patch blocks by color to see if I

could make multiple cuts from the same

Companion fabric square.

Then I cut a 3 and 3/8” strip and subcut that strip into (2) 3 3/8” squares and set

the extra pieces aside.

And for some of my Patch blocks, I simply cut a 3 3/8” square from the corner of

one of my layer cake squares.

Here are some examples of several other Sub Sets

that I cut.

EACH Sub Set is to go into it’s own baggie.

Below is a picture of all 12 of my Sub Sets cut out

and stacked into piles to place into 12 baggies.

This concludes the instructions for Month 4 of our Mystery.

Please set aside your remaining background fabric as well as your layer cake fabric squares and scraps. You will use

them again in future Mystery instructions. (page 2)

The meeting was opened by Vice President, Kathi Cappellini. (President Sue Heisler was out of town.) Kathi welcomed the visitors and new members Kathi talked about our retreats scheduled for this fall and next spring.

The Fall Retreat will be next week, November 9-12. There will be two Spring Retreats. HIGHROADS RETREAT – Linda Jamrogowicz

As was announced at the October meeting, the Highroads Retreat will be held March 9-11. Sign-ups will begin December 7th at 2 PM by email to Linda Jamrogowicz at [email protected]. Sign-

ups will continue at the HQU meeting that evening. This will be HQU’s 10th retreat at Highroads. This retreat is described as a “No Frills Retreat”. It is held in a lodge type of building at a scout camp. You

will need to bring your own bedding and towels. It has a relaxing view, and everyone has lot of fun quilting together in the community room. More details are included in the HQU newsletter.

WINCHESTER RETREAT – Sue Heisler This spring retreat is a “Hotel Retreat” with all the amenities found at a hotel. It will be held at the Hampton Inn in Winchester, VA. The Hampton Inn has a large room for us to use which means we will have more space for retreaters.

Sign-ups will begin December 7th at 2 PM by email to Sue Heisler at [email protected]. Sign-ups will continue at the

HQU meeting that evening.

Jackie Clattenburg is available at the Community Service table for you to pick up kits to take home and complete. Use just the fabrics in the quilts or add your own.

Community Service is working on putting together a group of patterns on our website for members to reference for quick and simple quilts.

Quilts of Honor Presentation – Lisa Markham & Carolyn Fulmer Lisa Markham described the service of Honoree Dale Cruickshank, Army Retd., Disabled American Veteran A distinguished member of the regiment after serving the old guard fife and drum corps. Dale was nominated by neighbor and friend, Member Sandy Smith. Both Dale and his wife, Joyce, are very active in community service recently working actively on fundraising for the

Kaplan family. The mother was killed, and the three children were severely injured in a recent accident on Evergreen Mills Road.

UFO Challenge – Celeste Corrigan The deadline is tonight to turn in your list to Celeste.

Memory Door Quilts – QU – Jeanne Coglianese Jeanne Coglianese will be collecting these for Mary Jane Meehan this month. If you haven’t turned yours in yet,

please try to bring them to the December meeting. Raffle – Joan Girardi

The Raffle is up and running and it will end at the December meeting. We have over 30 prizes plus a silent auction. We have something for everyone, gift cards, a go-cutter, and everything you need to make a quilt in one basket,

including the batting! Tickets are $1.00 each, or 6 for $5.00. *You can also pick up a wreath to decorate and return it in December as a donation.

Membership – Bonnie Germroth Bonnie announced that our new membership number is 160 We are still taking new memberships and renewals. We encourage everyone to keep their membership status up to date, so they will keep receiving newsletters and

other important notifications.



Alvey School Presentation any interest in making a presentation to the 5th graders at Alvey explaining the history of quilting and some of the

techniques used today. Three members volunteered to make a presentation to 5th graders and to get in touch with the school very soon.

December Holiday Party – Gayle Hindle & Jackie Reese Gayle asked all members who will be coming to the December meeting to sign up, so the Social Team will have an

idea of how many to set up for. This will also help them have an idea how much food will be coming.

Challenges – Connie Gallant Connie presented a new challenge to members. After passing out quilt magazines, Connie aske everyone to turn to

page 37. The challenge is to use something from that page or an adjacent page, color, design, inspiration., to create a quilt. The quilt should be no larger than 36” X 36”. It is due at the February meeting.

Warrenton Presbyterian Church Quilt – Connie Gallant & Patty Kerns Haymarket Quilters Unlimited is making a quilt from a Jo Moury pattern to be given to this church as a “thank you” for

their allowing us to use their community activities room for our workshops. The log cabin blocks for the church quilt should be given to to Connie or Patty Kerns. Due no later than January

meeting, but sooner is better.
