The objectives of the HAZID procedure are to identify main hazards, to review the effectiveness of selectedsafety measures and, where required, to epand the safety measures in order to achieve a tolerableresidual ris!" In compliance with the #eveso II Directive, besides facility safety concepts for newinstallations, also safety concepts for eistin$ operational facilities have to be reviewed"

The analysis serves the operator as proof that installations are operated such that hazards for employees, third parties, the environment and the surroundin$s can lar$ely be ecluded" The operator%s mana$ement$ets an up&to&date picture of the present hazards and their possible effects" 'y means of the HAZIDanalysis the primary process, but also non&process, hazards as well as their possible escalations can beidentified due to the structured manner of the procedure" (mployees can be advised of the relevanthazards concernin$ their wor!in$ area"

At the same time the outcomes can be ta!en as a support in compilin$ the required nei$hborhoodinformation" The facility desi$ner considers the analysis results to improve safety concepts for new&builtinstallations"

Definition - What does Hazard Identification Study (HAZID)mean?

Hazard identification )HazID* study is the method of identifyin$ hazards to prevent and reduce any adverse

impact that could cause injury to personnel, dama$e or loss of property, environment and production, or

become a liability" HazID is a component of ris! assessment and mana$ement" It is used to determine the

adverse effects of eposure to hazards and plan necessary actions to miti$ate such ris!s"

    Hazard Identification Study (HAZID)

Hazard identification )HazID* study ta!es into account all of the process and non&process hazards" It helps

to desi$n and or$anize the health, safety and environmental issues in an or$anization" HazID involves

machine or equipment desi$ners, mana$ement and end users, and ensures a full identification of hazards

    and safe$uard procedures in a wor!place"

    'enefits of HazID study include+

    • evealin$ hazards at an early sta$e before they happen

    • Hazards are recorded and mana$ed to be avoided, miti$ated or hi$hli$hted

    • -reventive measures are controllable

    • 'ud$et over&runs are avoided, thus saves money

    • Hazard screenin$ criteria are established

    • .on critical hazards are documented to demonstrate that the events in question could be safely

    Hazard Identification

Hazard identification )HAZID* is /the process of identifyin$ hazards, which forms the essential first stepof a ris! assessment" There are two possible purposes in identifyin$ hazards+

To obtain a list of hazards for subsequent evaluation usin$ other ris! assessment techniques"This is sometimes !nown as /failure case selection0"

    • To perform a qualitative evaluation of the si$nificance of the hazards and the measures for

reducin$ the ris!s from them" This is sometimes !nown as /hazard assessment0"

Durin$ the hazard identification sta$e, the criteria used for the screenin$ of the hazards will beestablished and possible hazards and accidents will be reviewed" 1or this purpose, the facility will bedivided into several sections" 1urthermore, the identified hazards will be classified into critical and non&critical hazards" It is of $reat importance that the hazards considered non&critical are clearlydocumented in order to demonstrate that the events in question could be safely disre$arded"

This failure case selection will be eecuted by $eneratin$ chec! lists, accident and failure statistics, hazard and operability #tudies )HAZ2-s* or by comparison with detailed studies and eperience fromprevious projects"

The HAZID also includes the division of the plant into sections as mentioned above" An eample of thesection division is shown below+
