Your Non-Profit & Small Business EXPERTS
Most people have heard of LinkedIn, and you may have created a LinkedIn profile, but is it up to date? Do you
know how to leverage it to its full potential? LinkedIn was launched in 2003 and is currently the third most
popular social network platform. LinkedIn is for professionals with the potential for networking for employers,
colleagues and potential employers. Having your business on LinkedIn can be a great tool for marketing. Here
are just a few tips to get you started.
Add a personal photo to your LinkedIn profile. Because LinkedIn is a professional social network, keep that in
mind when posting a photo and information. Include all your contact information including your phone number,
website address, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
1. Optimize your profile search so you are more likely to be found. Use key terms in various sections of yourprofile. List your volunteer service, education, current and previous positions. Create a custom profile URLthat is identifiable as your own. This will make it easier to find your page and makes returning to your pagequicker for you and potential employers.
2. Consider using your LinkedIn as your resume. One of the most beneficial uses of LinkedIn can be used forjob seeking. Use the Resume Builder Tool to display your profile in a resume format. You can then edit, export to PDF format, and share your resume with potential employers.
3. Because LinkedIn makes endorsing easy, make sure your profile includes skills you want your contacts toendorse. This builds credibility and allows for engagement in your network. You will receive an email whensomeone endorses you. Receiving endorsements is just as important as giving endorsements. Recognizingyour colleagues for the skills you have seen them demonstrate helps contribute to the strength of theirprofile and increases the probability of them being discovered for opportunities.
4. There are a variety of tools to help you connect with others. You can import your contacts from your email– but I would *CAUTION* you on this one. Personally, I had some issues with LinkedIn automatically emailingpeople from my list without me knowing. I was able to connect with some great people, but notnecessarily in the way I would have chosen. You can, however, use the “Keep in Touch” section to keeptrack of your communications and get notification when someone in your network changes jobs, has abirthday, etc. You can even use the mobile app and do it on the go.
If you would like help updating your LinkedIn profile, please feel free to contact Alpha Omega Professional
Services today. We can help you maximize your profile to its fullest potential.
