What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their own business?Be prepared to work long hours to make your business a success and more importantly make sure you are incredibly passionate about your business, brand, products and service. Never compromise on anything which pulls you away from your ethos and be a perfectionist – getting everything right from a tiny decision to a big one makes all the difference.

How would you like Willow and Hall to develop in the future? It’s really exciting for us as we’re becoming much more than just a furniture company that sells products. We love working with our customers through our website and events to give them inspiration and guidance on the interiors and looks they can achieve with our products and our customers are really connecting with us on this. This has opened up a great longer term opportunity for us to move into an interior design service in addition to selling beautiful British made products. Of course with the latter we also have plans to expand our collections so that our customers can purchase more beautiful items with us and achieve their dream interior. Given this, in November we are launching our new bed range and then Spring next year we will be expanding some of our existing collections as well as introducing new product ranges such as a gorgeous love seat collection for those looking for something in-between a sofa and a chair.

As we’re expanding we’re also looking for a showroom space in South West London which we hope to open by Easter next year. This will help us to connect with more customers and showcase first hand our lovely items and brand.

What makes a house a home for you?For me it’s when a person or a family’s personality and individuality come through. I have seen this achieved in all sorts of ways from the use of light, space and of course furniture and furnishings. Regardless of how it’s achieved the outcome is always the same - a space which is the perfect fit for those that live within it in terms of look, feel and how the space is utilised.

http://www.willowandhall.co.uk/

What was the inspiration behind Willow and Hall? The inspiration of the business and what is still central to everything we to today is to design British furniture which looks beautiful and is stylish whilst also being really high quality and comfy. I wanted to provide all of this for our customers at fantastic value and combined with a high quality and personal service.

Do you have a favourite piece in your range?I can’t really pick a favourite but I do really like our new corner sofas and sofa beds which offer fantastic comfort for families and have a slightly more relaxed look to some of our more traditional 2 and 3 seater sofas and sofa beds.

What do you love about running your own company? I love the independence it gives me and the passion it brings out in me for my company. I also love the accountability. When you own your own company you’re responsible for ensuring every decision is right for your brand and more importantly your customers.

The buck really does stop with you. For me, whilst this is challenging, it also drives you on to constantly improve your company which is never a bad thing.

INTERVIEW

What attracted you to working in the travel business?

I think it was something that I was destined to do. My dad worked in the airline business and started with BOAC, which really dates him, and then British Airways following the merger of BOAC and BEA.

When I was 5 he joined Air New Zealand and I was at just the right age for the excitement and glamour of travel to grab me. It wasn’t so much because of lots of exotic holidays to faraway places, which we didn’t have and I didn’t actually get to New Zealand myself for another 20 years, but because of the possibilities that come with travel.

My dad would come home with New Zealand posters, boxes of brochures about NZ and the islands of the South Pacific, large scale models of DC-10s and 747s that he’d use on promotional road shows. Oh, and he also had a kiwi costume that he sometimes had to wear at events and functions and I’d stumble around the house with just the head on.

What this made me realise was that someone could turn up at Manchester Airport or any other airport in the world and literally go anywhere and do anything that they wanted. And I still feel like that today.

What do you love most about New Zealand?

I suppose the obvious thing to say would be the forests, the mountains and the wild coastlines and the fact that you can easily access the wilderness and appreciate the scale, emptiness and peace of the country. New Zealand is about the same size as the UK but has 7% of the population and a third of those people live in Auckland, the largest city. Most of the time it feels like there is nobody else there.

I also love the three Ws of wildlife, walking and wine but if I had to choose one thing, it would be the people.

People from New Zealand are so relaxed, friendly and hospitable and also so proud of their country and want to share it with visitors. People in supermarkets, cafés and petrol stations will take the time to talk to you and ask you where you are from and where you are going. I think this is why so many of my clients visit for their once in a lifetime holiday and just have to go back.

Page 17: HBCP The Home Issue - Oct 2014

Hot Brands Cool Places spoke with Paul Carberry, Founder of

New Zealand In Depth for an exclusive interview.

What are the benefits of specializing in just one country?

Specialising in New Zealand has allowed me to completely commit to the country and feel part of the place. Spending so much time there over the last 17 years means that I know New Zealand better than anywhere else, including the UK. Thinking about it, I actually know it better than Cheshire and Derbyshire where I’ve lived for most of my life.

When I am in New Zealand, I feel such a familiarity with the country, the people and the culture that I do not feel like a foreigner. I love being there and I spend all of that time in my clients’ shoes, imagining how they would feel about a place to stay, a nice view or a walk in the bush.

Another big benefit is that I’ve been able to forge strong friendships and relationships with people on the ground, the people who will host my clients at their accommodation or guide them on a trip. So we all get to know each other and can form a bond, a triangle of trust and understanding.

What are some of the most memorable experiences that you recommend for your clients?

This is why I have chosen to do what I do and have focused on learning as much as I can about New Zealand and all the experiences it offers as everyone is different and ‘memorable’ is very subjective.

You might enjoy wine or wilderness hiking, trout fishing or golf, bird watching or landscape photography. Or all of those things, or none of them. My responsibility is to listen, to understand the needs and interests of my clients and work with them to create a holiday that is an exact fit.

Having said that, things that would stand out for me would be an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound in the deep wilderness of Fiordland, the dense rainforest of Te Urewera or the beautiful birds of Stewart Island. But that is just a start and I could go on and on!

When people want a holiday of a lifetime, what are some of the key components?

This really takes us back to the previous question and for me the key components are relationships, listening, interpretation and objectivity.

I take my direction from my clients and will only ever make recommendations and suggestions that are right for them.

Given that you spend your time planning holidays for others, what makes a perfect holiday for you?

I see travel as an opportunity to learn and discover. Wherever I am, whether that is New Zealand or Spain or Derbyshire, I am always happy if I can enjoy new experiences or be able to take the time to observe familiar experiences in a different way.

I never get tired of walking around cathedrals or walking in the forest or watching the ocean or watching the fantails.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK; one in eight women will face it. Half a million people are living with it. And yet, despite significant advances in treatment and care, we still can’t stop breast cancer taking the women we love. This month alone, 1,000 women will lose their lives to breast cancer.

Breakthrough Breast Cancer is determined to stop breast cancer for good. We’re discovering how to prevent it, how to detect it earlier and how to treat it more effectively. This October, with the help of leading UK retailers, we are asking shoppers across the country to help us continue our cutting-edge research by purchasing one of the exclusive products that will be helping raise vital funds throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Every year, almost 50,000 women in the UK receive the devastating news that they have breast cancer. That’s around one woman every 10 minutes. It’s time to put an end to this disease and that’s why we’re asking UK shoppers to help us stop breast cancer for good.

Anouska Hempel - Marcus Binney

Synopsis: The savant of the visual, Anouska Hempel is revered across the world for her originality and for her influence. This is a designer who sees everything, and instinctively understands it. It might be a Japanese screen, or a Tudor portrait, an object, a fabric, a colour or a decorative technique. She may come to it innocently, but she will see exactly what it does, and how it does it. Yet that’s just where she starts. Take an inspiration; treat it with respect; understand its disciplines. Then transform it. The sparks from creative friction and an all-encompassing imagination mark out each of her designs as unmistakably her own. A first image goes galloping on to greatness elsewhere. As a designer, there are no limits to her domain. In her work, design becomes part of the natural order, apparently tamed at last. ‘Everything has its place, and there is a place for everything’, she says. And yet the process is never complete. Along with order, there is the mystery that comes from building the design in multiple layers and the restless creativity that is impelled to take perfection to new levels. There has never been a designer quite like Anouska Hempel, and this volume is both a celebration of her achievement and an intimate insight into it. In this astonishing book, we find her hotel creations, such as the two Blakes, the Hempel itself and Warapuru in Brazil, her private houses, including the incomparable Cole Park, her yacht and her garden designs – all the elements of a life of design.

Employee and Customer Engagement…Naturally examines the key stages of employee and customer engagement including case studies from: InterContinental Hotels Group, innocent, Prêt A Manger, plus survey results from Generations Y & Z – Doing it Differently – what organizations need to do to attract, retain and develop new talent.

Hot Brands Cool Places VerdictWritten by our Editor, so it wouldn’t be right to review it, but when asked why she has written it, her response was: “I had received so much powerful feedback from a generation of young people as they were either just leaving university, or in the first few years of employment. They give valuable advice for organizations, some very poignant statements about some of the challenges faced by them in making personal choices about their careers and their hopes and aspirations. This was balanced against the independence and freedom anticipated by those who want to work for themselves. I wanted to give them a platform for their opinions as well as trying to present some down to earth advice from organizations who are engaging with their customers and employees in a very natural way. I hope people like it!”
