HBSA EXHIBITIONS SUB-COMMITTEE REPORT
AGM - Oakley Court Hotel, Windsor, UK – April 2018
Professional Beauty, Excel, London, 25th-26th February 2018
Nikki Thomas from Grafton International reports on Professional Beauty as the UK’s
biggest beauty industry trade event…
Professional Beauty is the UK’s biggest beauty industry trade event with over 800
brands, 3 conferences, 8 live stages, 6 seminar programmes and 2 make-up and nail
championships, this is a must-attend event for over 33,000 professional
visitors converging under one roof at Excel London Docklands over the weekend of
the 25th and 26th of February.
Celebrating its 30th year in 2018, the show provided the ideal connection point
for spa managers and beauty therapists along with suppliers and distributors,
drawing a crowd more than 30,000 over the 2-day event.
Continued on Page 2…
Professional Beauty showcased classic salon favourite categories as well as new
innovations from exciting emerging beauty brands in nails, lashes, brows and anti-
ageing, in addition there were international competitions and their Professional
Beauty Awards.
We had a significant presence with IBD nails and The Eyelash Emporium and, no
question, it is the best domestic beauty show in the UK. It was a very exciting
opportunity for us to engage new customers and share new launches with our
existing customers.
(Nikki Thomas, Grafton International)

International Beauty Show, New York, 4th-6th March 2018
Sian Waters, Social Media Co-Ordinator for Denman International reports on IBS
New York and the show highlights…
IBS New York is the longest-running professionals-only event and draws 65,200 serious hair and beauty professionals in America. The visitors are salon owners, managers and stylists who are passionate about this industry.
Cosmetologists attend the show to learn new techniques and trends from industry icons, refine skills, and stock up on salon and professional needs.
This year the quality of exhibitor’s stands was outstanding, definitely one of the best
years yet which included top brands such as Babyliss, Amika, Denman, Oster and
Halo Couture. There was a huge increase of hair extensions and nail brands, which
seemed to draw many visitors.
Continued on Page 4…
Denman kicked off their 80th Anniversary by launching their new brand look which
includes a new logo, imagery and a strapline ‘celebrating 80 years around the world.’
This was also the first time that British Hairdressing Hall of Fame, Paul Stafford
demonstrated on stage after being announced as Denman’s Global Creative Director.
Paul taught at ‘The Craft of Precision Cutting’ masterclass on the Sunday which was
a huge success and completely full of stylists wanting to learn more.
Continued on Page 5…
One of the show highlights for Denman, was having the Denman Stage Star Winner,
Sam Carpenter on the stage alongside Paul Stafford and his team. Denman ran this
competition at Salon International 2017 and Sam competed against three other
stylists to win the prize of working on the Denman Stage at IBS New York. Sam will
participate in exciting projects with Denman throughout 2018, the next one being
Paul Stafford’s photoshoot taking place in Denman Headquarters where he will assist
Paul.

Cosmoprof Bologna, Italy, 15th – 18th March 2018
David Vickers, Chairman & Managing Director from Rand Rocket Ltd, reports on
Cosmoprof Bologna as one of the biggest trade shows…
Does this show get bigger every year? Glad I had comfortable shoes!
Continued on Page 6…
As ever it was a very useful show for us to attend as we get to meet so many people
in one place in such a short space of time. It does take a lot of walking, which
helps to shed the weight gained from last night’s pasta I suppose.
We hoped the split of the show into two start dates would allow us to get everything
done on the Wednesday & Thursday and whilst Wednesday was useful, it wasn’t as
we’d hoped and without them extending the Wednesday opening wider I’m not sure
I’d come on the Wednesday again, so was glad we’d planned to be there for Friday
as well.
PS when will they build more hotels so that the price of rooms will come down from
astronomical?
(David Vickers, Rand Rocket)
Lisa Keir, Marketing Manager for Professional Beauty Systems Ltd, provides a review
on another successful year at Cosmoprof Bologna…
2,822 exhibitors from 70 countries took part in the 51st edition of Cosmoprof
Worldwide Bologna exhibition, 3% more than in 2017. The event has grown by
7.5% overall, confirming Cosmoprof’s role as the flagship event in a global
network that showcases the very best of the sector.
Continued on Page 7…
Professional Beauty Systems exhibited their extensive range of hair and beauty
brands from a newly designed stand in the British Pavilion which saw both a change
of hall and dates that the exhibition ran for the country pavilions; it ran a day earlier
than the rest of the exhibition and the general feeling in the hall was that footfall
was affected by both factors.
The eye catching Professional Beauty Systems stand attracted a large international
audience from existing distributors and attracted many new customers interested in
the company’s flagships haircare brands OSMO and Crazy Color.
OSMO styling, grooming, care and colour ranges were exhibited on the Professional
Beauty Systems stand. New OSMO product launches proved extremely popular with
attendees and included new additions to the hugely popular Super Silver No Yellow
collection, four new Metallic pastel shades for the OSMO Ikon permanent hair colour
range and a new look for the intense colour conditioning treatment Colour Revive.
Continued on Page 8…
The new product launches for Crazy Color were also a huge success, the exhibition
saw the launch of four Neon ultra-violet semi-permanent colours to the collection,
the addition of Graphite to the Spray In range and the eagerly anticipated launch of
a Color Remover.
In addition to exhibiting in the Country Pavilion, Professional Beauty Systems along
with their Italian distributor also presented Crazy Color in Hall 34 and OSMO in Hall
25 where they showcased the range and held live demonstrations with barbers and
hairdressers on their hair stage.
(Lisa Keir, Professional Beauty Systems)
Sian Waters, Social Media Co-Ordinator for Denman International, reviews the
Cosmoprof Bologna show where Denman celebrated 80 years around the world…
Cosmoprof Bologna 2018 was a huge success with a growth of 11% in visitor
numbers from last year and a record number of exhibitors, 2,822 from over 70
countries.
Continued on Page 9…
The exhibition showcased high-end brands within the hair and beauty industry, with
some amazing stand designs which definitely gained a lot of attention from the
visitors. It was great to see so many UK exhibitors at the show such as Hair Tools,
Rand Rocket, Pro Care and Professional Beauty Systems.
This year, there was a large increase in natural, organic and vegan friendly products.
A lot of the packaging was very minimalistic, and the majority can be reused or
100% recycled, which is extremely important during the current and ongoing ‘no
plastics’ debate.
This year was extremely exciting for Denman as they celebrated their 80th
Anniversary and launched their new brand look at the show. Paul Stafford, Denman’s
Creative Global Director made a guest appearance to chat to customers about new
products and how to use them most effectively.
Continued on Page 10…
Not only that but he also announced all the exciting plans in store for him this year,
including a Global Campaign photoshoot which will take place in Bangor, Northern
Ireland at the Denman warehouse in April.
(Sian Waters, Denman International)
Salon Smart, Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel, London 25th-26th March 2018
Martyn Wady from the Wady Company provides a report on another successful year
at Salon Smart…
Now in its 11th year, 2018 was another successful year for Salon Smart. This year
299 delegates enjoyed a full weekend of business and creative focussed seminars
and workshops. Held over the weekend of Sunday 25th and Monday 26th March at
the Park Plaza Riverbank hotel London this year’s theme of Taking Control of
Business, was addressed by a line-up of speakers including Larry King, Skyler
McDonald and Sam McKnight.
As well as workshops there were presentations on the Business of Colour by Alan
Edwards, Integrated Marketing by director of publicity at Salon Success Zoë Vears and
Monica Teodoro the general manager of L’Oréal Professional, looked at the future and
the consumer revolution. There was also a discussion forum on male marketing which
was held by the leading male-grooming experts with an interview and creative
presentation from Brooks & Brooks.
Continued on Page 11…
In addition to seminars, delegates got to see live presentations and meet
representatives from a range of industry specialists at the 2-hour ‘Working Lunch’
session. These included salon software, hair extensions, wet product lines, trade
organisations and salon furniture among others.
The aim of Salon Smart is business and networking and while the actual number of
delegates is small, they are almost exclusively salon owners, so the quality of the
delegates from a business perspective is very high. The number and type of sponsor
companies is deliberately limited, to ensure that all participants have an opportunity
to meet with all the delegates and the delegates get to see and spend time with all
the industry product brands involved.
Salon Smart is not an exhibition as such, but it does allow access to a small but
influential group of decision makers, as well as allowing time and space for
conversations that can be hard to have at exhibitions or in the salon. For this reason,
it’s worth considering if this type of approach suits your product or marketing
strategies.
(Martyn Wady, The Wady Company)
HBSA Summer Party Invite Monday July 2nd 2018
The HBSA Summer party will take place on Monday July 2nd. This year we are taking
a private boat trip on the river Thames leaving from the pier just outside
Embankment Tube station in central London.
Continued on Page 12…
The evening starts at 7.00pm with reception drinks on the expansive deck before
moving downstairs into the dining area to enjoy a fantastic three course meal.
This is a great event to network and to catch up with friends and colleagues in the
industry and we do hope you will be able to join us.
The cost of the evening is £125.00 plus VAT per person which includes a cocktail, a
three course meal with two options per course, unlimited table wine, beer and soft
drinks throughout the cruise. An additional wine list will also be available on the
night.
Continued on Page 13…
To reserve your table (in 10s) please contact Mike Patey
[email protected] or call 0845 519 3258.
Individual or smaller group bookings are also welcome.
Since last year’s AGM, we have included 25 reports on 15 exhibitions and 6
events. This reflects a busy year of both visiting and exhibiting at hair and beauty
shows around the globe.
Many thanks to everyone that has contributed to each quarter’s HBSA Exhibitions
Report. All submissions are gratefully received and thank you for all of your efforts.
Reports from other HBSA members are always welcome for future issues.
