Park Falls has been voted #1 in the State with their program and contest that has spanned a broad- cast period of more than 20 years. People from Europe, Florida, Green Bay, Madison and all over participate via the Internet, not to mention the 25-plus deer camps calling 98Q Country in from everywhere in the Northwoods. Other Heartland markets also cause laughter with their rendition of “Deer Hunter’s Round-up.’ In Ashland, the third annual “Garland City Women’s Expo” was held on November 9th. The event sported 48 booths and semi- nars every hour including a fash- ion show. Also on November 9th, Ashland’s Skip Hunter was broad- casting live from the “Elk’s Radio Auction” from Elks Lodge #137. $10,000 in merchandise was do- nated by area merchants! The Heartland stations in Iron River, MI will be participating in “Holiday In Lights” on December 7th. A terrific Christmas Parade begins at 6 p.m. An “Arts and Craft Fair” runs all day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. At the WID Library, there will be a bake sale and Santa visit with a chili feed from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. In Eagle River, WRJO’s turkey bowling tournament was held at the Ojibwe Market in Lac du Flambeau Saturday, November 9th. There were 15 winners, each of whom rolled ten “frames” with a frozen turkey. WRJO totaled the number of pins each winner knocked down and the bowler with the highest number won the grand prize, which was a Thanks- giving dinner for their family, from soup to nuts. All of our other bowlers won a prize, ranging from a turkey to a certificate at Ojibwe Market. In Park Falls, the “98Q Country Red Higgins Christmas for the Lord’s Cupboard Food Pantry will take place. This program is held at the High School Auditorium. At the end of the evening, there is a truckload filled with food to be de- livered to the Lord’s Cupboard Food Pantry! See Events, Page 3

Iam sure that at one time oranother most of us haveheard the expression, “If it

ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I am writ-

ing this frommy hospitalbed at St.Agnes Hos-pital, Fonddu Lac.While here, Ihad mybroke male“plumbing”fixed andhave re-ceived the finest healthcare anyonecould wish for. What this hospitalhas is probably what many U.S.and Wisconsin community hospi-tals have, and that is an extremelyqualified, dedicated and caring staffof doctors, nurses and CNAs. Ifthere is a better urologist anywherethan Dr. James Wright, I can’timagine. Dr. “Mac,” my anesthesi-ologist, adorning a Badger surgicalcap, was the epitome of expertisecombined with fun, and I mightadd, a “car guy!” Jeff, my post-optnurse, another “car guy” who hasraced midgets, took good care ofme for almost four hours as we

talked “cars.” The nurses in the OR(I can only remember a lady namedStacy and then the “lights wentout”) and on the 4th floor: Kathy,Deb, the two or three Karens, Janet,Bonnie, Amy, Heather, Tammy, Bri-anna, and a young lady, who was ajunior in high school and had al-ready accomplished CNA status,plus the “room service” folks withthe vanilla shakes, raised my guiltlevel; they were just too good tome.

I don’t know if all hospitals inthe U.S. are like St. Agnes, but St.Mary’s in Madison was (my wifewas there in the past couple ofyears). Yet, our government wantsto make changes to this system?Who are they kidding? Haven’tthey ever heard the phrase, “If itain’t broke, don’t fix it?”

I wish the government wouldfocus on “fixing” themselves ratherthan everyone and everything else.They might consider doing that bystarting to employ government peo-ple who are straightforward ratherthan the tax cheats, thieves andcriminals working in Washingtontoday. Maybe the governmentneeds to recognize and embrace an-other old adage, “Pick the thornsoff of your own bush, before you

begin picking them off someoneelse’s bush…” You can’t comparethe wonderful healthcare individu-als that served me to the apparentnumber of Washington politicianswho seem to have their nosepointed toward the clouds whiletheir brain housing is nestled intheir lower GI region.

These politician “genius-types,”who have more than doubled thenational debt in the last five years(6 trillion to 13+ trillion), screwedup the long-standing U.S. nationalcredit rating; completely stymiedjob creation (except for part-timedishwashing positions) and spent$580,000,000.00 on a BOCarewebsite designed by Michelle “Forthe First Time in My Adult Life-time, I’m Really Proud of MyCountry” Obama’s “Haaaa-vad”college friend (this IT disasterdoesn’t seem to be capable of any-thing, but blue screening). Perhapssome of these politicians should beenrolled in one of those remedialstudy courses for “Politicians ThatHave Been Left Behind” ratherthan immediately jumping intothings like the work of trying toproperly lead and govern theUnited States. With Thanksgivingupon us, maybe you and I should

be thankful that we don’t get all ofthe government we pay for!

Folks, as broadcasters, we oughtto be very concerned.

Our incapable, and less-than-hon-est government, that took on thebanking industry (yet, the govern-ment can’t even timely put in placea national budget); the automotiveindustry (the Government Motor’selectric car, the “Jolt, with thechronic electrical short or the“Smut” car, which, as a last resort, isbeing marketed to first-graders whocan actually fit inside them) andnow, the healthcare industry (and, aswe are finding out, “We have to passthe [healthcare] bill so that we canfind out what’s in it....” a quotefrom “Nancy with the Laughing (atus) Face”) may soon be after ourbroadcast industry. “Freedom ofSpeech,” just like the “Freedom toBear Arms” may be next on theWashington “Control Agenda.”Their thought may be that onceFreedom of Speech is eradicated,the U.S. would join the ranks ofother robot/lemming peoples likeCommunist China, CommunistCuba, Communist Venezuela andthe former Communist USSR.

Craig is married to Beth Whetstine and they havea 9-year-old daughter, Sydney. Beth is also a broad-caster; she works out of offices in their family homeas National Sales Manager forVerstandig Broadcasting, aradio group headquartered inGreencastle, PA, that serves afour-state area from Washing-ton, DC to Baltimore, MD;from Harrisburg, PA to Win-chester, VA.

Among the many outdooractivities Craig enjoys, he is aUnited States Soccer Federa-tion grade 7 referee and grade9 instructor as well as a quali-fied high school soccer ref-eree. Craig also likes tocross-country ski with Beth and Sydney and tospend time in the outdoors with his family. Beth isan accomplished downhill skier; she is looking for-ward to hitting the Northwoods slopes at places likeSki Brule, Indianhead, Blackjack, Whitecap, BigPowderhorn, Rib Mountain, etc.

Impossible you say? Really?What’s your guarantee and ration-ale? Would you rather have freedomor free stuff? Already over 50% ofthis country votes for free stuff; theyare the “forever needy,” read that:they “need” to redistribute yourhard-earned paycheck in their direc-tion (you earn – they take).

If the United States continuesdown the path that we’re currentlyheading, free over-the-air radio sta-tions such as the ones operated byHeartland Communications Group,could very well be silenced. Ifworld history teaches us anything,high-power national government-owned and controlled radio and TVstations could go on the air. Youwon’t need the “scan-button” onyour radio anymore; one size (sta-tion) will fit all (might be called“Control-span 24/7”).

Are we next? If government cancontrol the banking industry, the au-tomotive industry and, now, thehealthcare industry, might it not at-tempt to control the broadcasting in-dustry in the future? The axiom “Ifit ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” is beingrevised by the U.S. Government to“fix” things by adding their control-element. Rather than voters being incontrol, the government wants vot-

ers to be in “remote control” withthe government clicking off thechannels (agenda).

Our U.S. healthcare system’s re-sults or productivity has never beenthe issue. We enjoy (except for theneedles ) the finest and most ca-pable healthcare system the worldhas ever known. What’s in question,really, is healthcare costs and healthinsurance costs. I wonder if thecost-question is most generallybeing asked by people who say theycan’t afford healthcare; then, Isometimes wonder if that’s reallytrue? Maybe those who holler theloudest are the same folks headingdown the highway with two fi-nanced snowmobiles on an expen-sive financed trailer being towedbehind a financed $50,000 F-250.Rather than prioritizing their ownhealth needs or the health needs oftheir families, these folks have de-cided it is more important for themto spend their hard-earned moneyon depreciating toys, which, in theend, may not increase their qualityof life to any degree. These folksbelieve that you and I should be re-sponsible for paying for their fam-

ily’s healthcare so that they can “af-ford” their toys. Ask them and theymay tell you that they have the“constitutional right” to such health-care. The last time many of thesefolks read the U.S. Constitution wasin the seventh grade (maybe). Bythe way, no one in the U.S. has everreally been denied necessary health-care…ask any ER doctor.

Many believe in “free” or low-cost healthcare (but, the cost ofhealthcare under BOCare is esti-mated to increase for a family offour: Forbes Magazine-(http://www.forbes.com/sites/theapothecary/2013/09/23/its-official-oba-macare-will-increase-health-spend-ing-by-7450-for-a-typical-family-of-four/) because that’s what theywere sold by the less-than-honestBO Administration which figuredthat we’re all just too stupid to fig-ure out their rubbish rhetoric (“Ifyou like your doctor, you get tokeep your doctor” and “your insur-ance costs will be reduced by$2,500”). My stay in the hospital has taughtme a lot. My doctors and nurseswere highly qualified, very kind and

encouraging. They are capable ofoffering the best healthcare avail-able. But, the healthcare industry’smarketing of themselves came upshort in convincing voters and somepoliticians of the amazing value ourhealthcare system offers.

In my opinion, the over-the-airand free broadcasting system in thiscountry is somewhat like the health-care industry, i.e., the best the worldhas ever known. If you, as a broad-caster, feel that what you do everyday has value to our listeners, ad-vertisers, communities, the states ofWisconsin and Michigan and theU.S., I will ask you to join with mein the future by asserting and writ-ing to your ELECTED officials,your thoughts on our broadcastingindustry’s service to the people whovalue what we do every day. Pickup the phone, your mouse or penand politely, but firmly, assert yourfeelings.

In Eagle River, the annual “WRJOPolar Bear Plunge” takes place again thisyear as area “cold-blooded” listeners jumpinto frigid lake water, all in the name offun and charity. This program raises thou-sands in donations for Angel On MyShoulder.

cast their “Annual Radio Trivia” in Janu-ary. From the entry fees collected, 98QCountry gives away cash and sponsor-pro-vided prizes.

BRRRRR! The Gales of No-vember are blowing! So farwe have seen the white

stuff coming down, but after all, it isNovember.

We now have October in thebooks. I would like to thank my entirestaff as we were able to knock out ourbudget for October! I know everyoneworked extremely hard all monthlong.

As we head into November, ourplates are as full as a Thanksgivingtable. We just wrapped up our 3rd An-nual Garland City Women’s Expo onSaturday November 9th. We had 48booths this year as opposed to 31 lastyear. We had 20-minute seminars onthe hour, every hour, including a fash-ion show! We added the Garland CityCafe this year that went over verywell, serving decadent desserts,healthy sandwiches and soups, cook-ies, pulled pork and more! Overall,we had more than 1,200 women at-tend this one day show! I would liketo thank the sales staff for a great jobon selling this event and also MarkDixon and Lori for their help!

On the same day, Skip Hunter wasbroadcasting live from the Elk’sLodge #137 for the annual Elks RadioAuction. This auction is hosted by theElks and all proceeds go to the Elksyouth programs and specifically Spe-cial Olympics for the area. There wasalmost $10,000 in merchandise do-nated from area businesses. Skipbroadcasts this event for 5 hoursstraight encouraging people to call inand bid on items. Skip always does asuper job on this event for the Elks!

We have our Deer Hunter’s Roundup coming up beginning on Saturday,November 23rd. This year, our newmorning show host, Rudy Allen willbe hosting the show along with SkipHunter live from the Valhalla View

Pub! We will have some crazy music,a ton of deer kill, and of course, wewill be giving away a full shouldermount for the biggest buck, a blackpowder rifle and 18 limited editionlong sleeve hunting shirts from theWhitetails Unlimited! It should be an-other fun year of deer hunting.

I also want to recognize DaveOlson, a/k/a Q Ball In the Morningthis month. As I am writing this arti-cle, it is Veteran’s Day, Monday, No-vember 11th. Thank You Dave foryour service to our country. It’s nosmall task to make a 20-year commit-ment to your country, and for that,myself and everyone else would liketo salute you!

vember 9th for Thanksgiving TurkeyBowling. This event attracts manyparticipants from all over the North-woods and western U.P. Michigan.The furthest distance a contestanttraveled to the event was a tie atabout an hour and a half. One contest-ant was from Hiles and the secondfrom Elcho.

Contestants bowled the 7th through10th frames of a standard bowlinggame. The men and women both used

the same 10 pound frozen turkey toknock down as many standard bowl-ing pins as they could.

Trivia: How many frozen turkeyswill 15 people use to complete a totalof 60 frames of bowling? 6. By thetime the bird is retired it is missing agood deal of it’s wrapper and is miss-ing a few chunks here and there.

15 contestants participated in theevent this year. The highest score wasfrom Linda Beck of Hurley. Lindabowled an impressive 42 with a sparein the 9th frame and a strike in the10th to seal the victory.

The Ojibwe Market served manydelicious goodies for the contestantsto enjoy. Plans are already in theworks for the 3rd Annual TurkeyBowl at the Ojibwe Market.

You would think thefootball might havebeen the only news

coming out of Iron County withboth Crystal Falls, Forest ParkTrojans and Iron Rivers West IronCounty Wykon’s entering the dis-trict finals undefeated, but thatwas not the case. Forest Park Tro-jans girls’ volleyball team hasmoved on to the district finalsagain this year, and for the firsttime in WIKB history, the playoffgames have been broadcasted liveon WIKB 99.1 “The Bull.”

High school sports lead theway, but lots of other events tookplace in Iron County including theharvesting of the 2013 State Capi-tal Christmas tree right here inIron River.

The West Iron County Wykon Football Season came to an end during the District7 finals at Nelson Field in Iron River. Their 10 and 0 season, the best ever forthe Wykon’s, was stopped by undefeated 2012District 7 State Champions from Ishpeming, theIshpeming Briones.

Hundreds of people gatheredto see this 71-foot blue sprucetree harvested from the back-yard of John and BarbaraWaara, who donated the treeto the state. This is the 19thstate Christmas tree to be se-lected from the UP. The treewill be lit during the 29th an-nual Silver Bells in the City onNovember 22 in Lansing, MI.

November is the month thatalways reminds me aboutbeing thankful! Though we

are busy with contests, promotions,budgets, and getting ready for Santawe have to take a step back and givethanks to the folks that help runthings smoothly and who are alwaysgiving of themselves day in and dayout.

Let’s start with Nancy Johnson ouroffice manager: She is the bright smi-ley face that greets callers on thephone and visitors at the front door.She is all about service to her fellowco workers, Heartland Communica-tions and her community. She takescare of managing the shopping showand assisting all of us in our dailytasks. Her commitment to communityis something quite rare because younever have to ask her twice to takepart. She’s ready with her Snoopybells on to help with our DomesticFamily Abuse Shelter fund raiser,volunteering at our Corner Rockyouth center, and helping with com-munity holiday dinners, the list goeson and on. I want to give thanks forNancy and let her know how muchwe appreciate her.

DJ Rick Frischmann, our afternoonguy: Rick juggles a full time job atthe paper mill then comes to the sta-tion to do a show… wait, an award-winning show as the plaque readsfrom the Wisconsin Broadcasters As-sociation. He also does production inthe afternoon for our sales reps andlive remotes. When I’m not looking,in the fall, he comes to the station ona weekend off to restain our frontdeck (I just wish I could get him topull all of the weeds in the frontflower bed as well)! LOL. Rick isvery giving of his time and lovesserving in the community by partici-pating in the Time Out Family AbuseShelter fundraiser, holiday dinners,food cupboard, is a certified ref forour high school athletics, and if yousaw him with his grandson Ethan,you would know how much of a lov-ing grandpa he is as well. I want togive thanks for DJ Rick and let him

know how much we appreciate himand all that he does.

Joel Karnick, morning guy and Pro-gram Director, he is our rock: Easy-going, but keeps us in ship-shape!The first one to arrive in the morning,gets the coffee going, turns the heatup in winter, air on in the summer!Then it’s like Santa and his naughty-and-nice list all year long…checkinglogs, making lists, checking it twice,prepping for the day and by the timewe all get to the studio, he almost hasa half day’s work in. I’m tired justthinking about it! But he is alwayshere for us. He is pro-sales, andcomes up with some pretty awesomead production and sales promotionstoo! The love for service to the com-munities is very special; who elsewould sit on the front lawn and do alive remote for 24 hours in rain, sleetor snow with no sleep, raising thou-sands and thousands of dollars for ourTime Out Family Abuse Shelter? Healso serves on the board for our Cor-ner Rock youth center, coaches St.Anthony’s basketball, helps with com-munity holiday dinners and Lord’sFood Pantry; it really is a never-end-ing list for Joel when it comes to com-munity. I want to give thanks for Joeland let him know how much he is ap-preciated in all that he does.

Preston Vaughn, community eventscoordinator/sales: He is suppose to bein semi-retirement but he’s one toughcookie because the adrenalin of asale, assisting our reps, productionpieces, and serving his clients keepshim young and thriving in this busi-ness. The first telemarketer in ourcompany to ever bill over $10,000plus in one month for various promo-tions like school sports, a communityfunction, Christmas programs, backto school, Halloween safety; basicallyif we can dream it he can sell it. Pre-ston is a retired pastor and continuesto volunteer for programs and serv-ices in his church community. I wantto give thanks for Preston and all thathe does and let him know how muchwe do appreciate him.

Paul Dischler on our sales team,the tie guy: A different knot everyday,really how many knots can you makeon a tie, that’s what I want to know…does anybody know? I love having

Paul on our team he is very talented,selling, writing commercials, produc-tion and even live remotes. He hasgreat sales ideas for annual proposals,promotions and contests which is allpart of what makes him a true gem tohis clients. He is always willing totake part in station functions, andfundraising events and holds a greatlove and respect for his community.He does volunteer church work, andhas participated as an actor in ourlocal community Northwood’s Play-ers organization. Paul is a daddyagain, as well. I know Paul doesmany good things in his communitythat folks don’t hear about. That’s thekind of guy he is…good deeds with-out having to be recognized so I wantto give thanks for Paul and all that hedoes and let him know he is verymuch appreciated.

Tammy Upson Phillips on our salesteam: Tammy is a master mind whenit comes to on air, production and thequality of commercials going out onthe air waves. That’s a key asset un-derstanding that piece of our businessand how well it plays into her dailysales tasks. Tammy has such a warmheart and passion for radio and how itaffects the success of businesses thatshe literally climbs her way inside theclients business world and imaginesherself as the owner and walks intheir shoes. She is an amazinglystrong woman and wonderful mother.I want to give thanks for Tammy andlet her know that she is dearly appre-ciated in everything she does.

We have an amazing team fromeveryone I’ve just mentioned to oursports announcers, our part-timeboard operators, our entire Heartlandgroup and the support and great lead-ership we get from our owners, Jimand Diane Coursolle. It’s people likethem who continue to make us shineon air and in our communities. This isthe chemistry of what makes Heart-land the best darn small market radiogroup in the Northwoods.

I am thankful and hold great re-spect for all of these amazing folks,their friendship and commitment.May the grace of God always shineupon you and especially during thistime of season as Thanksgiving ap-proaches us.
