Southbury, CT (Grassroots Newswire) –Economic indicators of late are showing that small

business lending is on the rise. That’s good news! However, to secure the money needed to get their business off the ground, there is more that prospective franchisees or business owners can do to help ensure a loan approval, according to The Entrepreneur’s Source (TES). “People can be intimidated by the process of applying for a loan to open a new business,” says COO and President of TES, Brian Miller. “Even in a tough economy, TES can help people understand the different approaches available to aspiring business owners to make it easier to get approval for the investment capital needed.” The business coaches with The Entrepreneur’s Source work directly with a strategic financial partner, Guidant Financial. Both TES and Guidant share a common vision of how to help new and passionate business owners get the financing they need. “Prospective entrepreneurs need to seek out financing early in the process of opening a new business to get a perspective of what is available and what they

can afford,” Miller added. “People can qualify for more capital dollars when they take a layered approach to financing a business,” says Jeremy Ames, CEO and founder of Guidant Financial. “By instituting multiple borrowing options at lower amounts, aspiring business owners will find it easier to get approved for a greater total amount of financing,” Ames added. TES says that taking a layered approach to acquiring capital involves combining several sources. For example, an entrepreneur might combine a Small Business Association (SBA) Loan with unsecured loans, direct bank financing and equipment leases and even consider creative ways to leverage existing assets. “Lending institutions are more open to offering a loan when they see more cash on the table from other sources like retirement funds, home equity loans and access to other assets of the borrower,” said Ames. “Today, 70 percent of our clients use multiple forms of financing.” “When aspiring business owners, including the many professionals who are in career transition, understand the

financing options available to them, business ownership becomes a more viable option,” said Miller. “When the business in question is a franchise, our experience indicates that lending institutions can be even more open to provide funding.” Miller explains that when banks and other lending institutions can consider both the applicant’s credit history and the track record for success of the franchise, they have a better foundation to establish an expectation for loan repayment.

“Our ability to maximize a client’s capitalization simply comes through the education we provide,” Miller explains. “Many clients have the ability to capitalize their businesses, they simply need to understand what their options are, and explore the creative ways their funds can be obtained.” For more information on financing a new business, franchise opportunities and business coaching support, please visit http://www.entrepreneurssource.com/.

C o m m e n t a r yCOLLECTING

By Larry Cox

Cookie Jars Q: I have a large collection of cookie jars, including one depict-ing Marilyn Monroe made by Clay Art. I am enclosing a picture. How much do you think it is worth? -- Lucille, Spicer, Minn. A: I checked eBay and found a dealer from Iowa offering the 2000 Millennium Marilyn Monroe cookie jar with original box for $39.95. It appears to be the same one that you have. Condition and rarity are two important fac-tors that determine the value of a cookie jar. Those that are chipped and have faded or missing colors are often worth a fraction of ones in mint condition. Incidentally, there are three excellent price guides you might fi nd helpful: An Illustrated Value Guide to Cookie Jars, by Erma-gene Westfall; Warman’s Cook-ie Jars Identifi cation and Price Guide, by Mark F. Moran; and The Complete Cookie Jar Book, by Mike Schneider.

*** Q: I have a book by Carrie Chap-man Catt published in 1917 and signed by the author. Any idea of where I can fi nd out its value? -- Mike, Gulf Shores, Ala. A: Carrie Chapman Catt was born in 1859 and was a leader in the votes-for-women movement during the early years of the past

century. She published several books, including two that were extremely popular: “The Ballot and the Bullet” and “Woman Suf-frage.” You can fi nd many of her books for sale online at www.abe.com. Go to the site, type in Catt’s name and the title of your book and soon dozens of dealers and the prices of her books that are avail-able will appear. This is the easi-est way to determine the value of many older books.

*** Q: I bought a small clock at a garage sale that measures 3 by 4 inches. What can you tell me about it? I am enclosing a picture. -- Kathy, Fanny Bay, B.C., Can-ada A: I examined your photo care-fully, and although it appears to be a Hummel-inspired design, I was not able to fi nd it in any of my reference books. The design seems to suggest that it is of fairly recent vintage, perhaps from the 1970s or ‘80s. If it is an authen-tic Hummel collectible, it will be marked as such.

v

ROAD TRIP!!!

Americans love their cars. And noth-ing goes with cars better than the road trip. Freedom from daily sched-ules, new sights and the open road

– it’s great! But there’s nothing like car trouble to bring the fun to a grinding halt. Now you can’t always avoid problems, but you can take steps to reduce the probability of getting sidelined on your trip. The first step is to look at your trip plan from your vehicle’s perspective. What kind of roads will you be traveling – winding byways or super-highways? Mountains or plains? What weather conditions are you likely to encounter? How many miles will you travel? How much weight will you be hauling – passengers and luggage? Lugging a trailer or roof top carrier? Will it be dusty? Armed with the answers to these questions, you can start a trip inspection to help you prepare your Albuquerque vehicle for your big adventure.

A great place to start is with the tires. Inspect them for tread wear and proper inflation. Is it time to rotate your tires? Replace them? Are they up to the job – you wouldn’t want to drive regular highway tires on a muddy off-road adventure. Shocks and struts play a major role in both driving comfort and safety. If they need to be replaced, you’ll really be glad you did once you hit the road. Is it time for a wheel alignment? Fighting a car that’s pulling to one side all day can be tiring and dangerous. And don’t forget your brakes. Any strange noises, grabbing, soft or hard peddle feel? If there is any doubt, get a brake inspection before you leave. Moving under the hood, have your belts and hoses inspected. If something is excessively worn or near failure, the stress of a long road trip might just be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Your engine air filter will be important. For every gallon of gas you burn, your car will filter and use 12,000 gallons of air. If the filter needs to be changed, you’ll notice the fuel savings on your trip. How close are you to your next oil change? Will you be able to complete your trip before it’s due? If not, just get it taken care of before you go so that you don’t need to interrupt your trip. In fact, a full service oil change is a great idea because they will top off all your fluids

and check to see if any other maintenance items are due, such as transmission or cooling system service. Do you notice any unusual odors in your vehicle? If so, it could as harmless as a dirty cabin air filter. But if it’s an exhaust leak it could be fatal on a long trip.
