A thletes and artists call it the “zone”. Psychologists identify it as “flow” – that state where thought and activity, mind and muscle, move as one, almost

without effort, without intention. If ever you experience this, you want very much to get back to that place again, so pleasurable is it. You feel like your best self.

All the analysis I’ve ever read about virtuosity places the greatest emphasis not on physical ability, strength or even style but on mental readiness, toughness and even happiness. If the star player is not in that good place, then it doesn’t matter a bean that they have the best swing, stroke, leap on the planet. As the Italians say, niente va: nothing works.

I’ve been musing on this for a while now, as I’ve watched Australian formula one driver Mark Webber struggle while cyclist and now Tour de France champion Cadel Evans soars. The self-effacing local boy rode into town last week and was greeted with overwhelming affection. If ever we’ve seen a master class in the necessity of a great attitude, the contrasting fortunes of these two stars have provided it. Of course, there are always mitigating factors and many other

people/events/circumstances to factor in. But, as a racer or rider, when the only thing you can truly control is yourself, a lack of control is a fascinating thing to watch.

Evans is one of the best examples I’ve seen of mastery of self. Do you remember the ornery, grumpy man he once was as a budding champ? Forever taking offence, peering darkly from under that subterranean

frown line, with complaints about team members, officials, conditions. Now let’s accept that some

of those frustrations were most valid – I’ve been yearning for years to see him with a decent, supportive team – it was nonetheless perfectly clear that nothing was going to flow for this guy until he got happy; until pleasure

became his principal state for a day at work. The man’s demeanour during the Tour, even on

tough days, was a revelation: composed, self-contained, reflective without being self-destructive, with no energy wasted on matters he could not control. It wasn’t always clear he was going to win, but he surely behaved like a winner.

Cut to Mr Webber. Like a Cadel Mark I, Webber has also been one of Australia’s more surly, complaining

high achievers: hard to like, even harder to see going all the way. No one who wasted that much energy on being grumpy could surely achieve a state of flow. I watch Webber – a sportsman I have grudgingly had to admit is a real master in his sport – and I see a bloke struggling with his own state of mind as much as he does a tricky track. It’s the car’s fault; his teammate’s fault; someone’s out to get him. I can’t think of a single high achievement that was ever reached in a state of siege.

Parents and teachers these days tend to emphasise something known as resilience in young people: the ability to soothe yourself and bounce back from blows, disappointments, failures. This emphasis on emotional intelligence is a belated but crucial one. Proud, ambitious parents are, of course, never going to stop encouraging their children to be the best they possibly can. But imagine a generation of kids who understand that there’s no point even trying to climb to the top of the mountain unless there’s going to be some joy experienced along the way. \

Dads are just that, aren’t they? We never look at our dads as style creatures or lady killers and we rarely think they were actually young once. We look at them as blokes who

just exist and, not forgetting, provide. But if you take a few moments to ask your dad about his dress choices when he was growing up or how he would like to look now, I guarantee you will be in for a few surprises.

I never realised my dad was a swanky dresser until really late into my teens and even then I was a bit blasé about the whole thing. Then one day I needed a suit jacket and I discovered that his wardrobe was full of gems. Even today I am still “stealing” things from his wardrobe.

So to all the one-time swanky, stylish dads, these pages are for you. Kids are great and an endless source of joy and tears but dads, you need to get your groove back and shake up the way you have been dressing. \

Many people have heroes when they are growing up

– sporting champs, film stars, music demi-gods and science magicians. Mine was a bit closer to home – my dad.

Clichéd it may be but the truth was my dad was “cool” way before “cool” was invented.

Trim, taut and terrific to this day, my dad is a man’s man but also a true gentleman; always immaculately dressed and groomed but never afraid to rough it.

I still dream about growing up like my dad – worldly, sporty, car enthusiast and watch aficionado.

Each Father’s Day I try to make it special for my dad just to let him know how much he is loved and admired. The tradition of Father’s Day originated in West Virginia in the United States in 1908 but its appeal is profoundly universal.

Father’s Day may not have the hoopla of Mother’s Day, but it is good to let him know he is appreciated.

Gifts for hip dads

Stockists » Rembrandt www.rembrandt.co.nz \ Diesel www.diesel.com/island 1800 132 780 \ crumpler www.crumpler.com \ Elk www.elkaccessories.com.au \ Soludos www.soludos.com

Father’s day is whatever you want it to be. But for those interested in gift giving, you can’t go wrong with giving dad some new clothes to help him make a fashion statement.

Let’s face it, blokes can never have enough in the wardrobe (men may argue this point, of course), but sprucing up his collection with some spring/summer 2011-12 choices is a perfect way to acquaint him with the seasonal trends.

Preaching to dad’s sartorial side doesn’t need to be that difficult either – subtle hints are the best and, given that spring racing is just around the corner (as is summer), inspiring him with a new suit for work or play, or highlighting new denim for weekends, or even adorning him with a new pair of sunglasses (even after dark if he is so inclined) are sure ways to keep him a step ahead of the pack.

New Zealand’s suit brand Rembrandt turns up the heat for spring and summer with a fabulous collection on offer – think classic tailoring fused with modern material and technology.

There’s a return to the double-breasted suit in its new summer range (yes, we saw signs on the catwalk collections months ago and it would only be a matter of time). Or for those inspired by classic tones, one can’t go wrong with the classic French navy suit – with designer Jonathan Hall putting his anything-but-conservative touch to a traditional dye and yarn.

Rembrandt also offers great pinstripe options for traditional dads, or lighter shades for those keen to brighten their image or look cool on warmer days.

Rembrandt also makes slimline suits for those who only want a fitted look. More than that, the label also makes coats, shirts and belts – so the sartorial choices are plenty when it comes to this established fashion house.

For the casual dad, teaching him a thing or two about denim might be your calling.

Why not show him you’re one step ahead by introducing him to Diesel Island jeans. A new campaign has been launched for spring/summer 2011 with

a men’s range dubbed Dirty New Age. This collection certainly has a thing

for a grubby finish (hence the name), and if your dad has more grunge than debonair written all over him, then this could be his pit stop. You can’t go wrong with the relaxed finishes of the straight-leg collection sure to suit most men.

There’s plenty of military and aviator detailing in Diesel Island shirts too while the red-and-white check shorts make a perfect outdoor statement.

For the artistic dad who is less logo-conscious and more earthy in his approach to fashion, then you certainly

can’t go past Elk’s latest men’s collection for a shot of spring

blooming. Why not opt for a man bag

(or the jute and leather bag as they prefer to call it). It’s made from sturdy hand-woven jute

and finished with German leather. Perfect for the urban dad

who likes to look a little different from the rest.

For the photographic dad consider Crumpler’s sassy addition to its collection known as The Local Identity. Ideal for those who like to take photos and pack their top-notch gear in the back, this photography/laptop combo can fit a15-inch laptop and has a cargo carrier. We love its waterproof guarantee.

And if all else fails and dad has a thing for NYC, why not give him the next best thing, a pair of New York Soludos espadrilles. They’re soft, comfy and available in fabulous fabrics and shades. Great for the city or the beach. \

A FRench bistro without cassoulet is like Dominique Strauss-Kahn

with his pants on. Both defy the laws of nature. So imagine my disappointment on combing the menu at the reloaded Bistro Guillaume and coming up cassoulet-less.

This happens a few weeks after the restaurant’s reopening and it turns out we have simply caught chef Guillaume Brahimi on the hop. He says he is still working on a suitable concoction of porky, ducky, sausagey bits with beans to make its debut on the menu at the soonest.

True to his word, on the next visit there is cassoulet on the carte. The good news is that it is now Thursday’s plat du jour, or daily special. The bad news is we are there on a Tuesday. Ouf. Looks like another visit is in order.

In the meantime, there is much to admire about the décor and the dishes at this latest Guillaume incarnation. The original bistro (its space since usurped by Spice Temple) proved too fancy for casino patrons’ tastes, so take two is a dressed-down, pared-back version with cheaper prices and a charming riverfront position complete with terrace.

Afternoon sunlight bathes its timber-floored, white-walled interiors and illuminates the signature green accents that channel the French countryside in spring. Good-looking staff in Lacoste polos and pumps work the floor with Gallic charm.

Failing cassoulet, there are plenty of other dishes to wave the flag. Chief among them is Brahimi’s onion soup, a voluptuous, velvety sludge dense with caramelised onions and crowned with three sturdy croutons coated in baked gruyere. It’s a strong contender for Melbourne’s best winter warmer.

The charcuterie line-up features a selection of salamis, including a saucisson sec and chorizo that is perhaps the least-interesting addition to the plate.

Better is the salty scoop of pork rillette pasted with fat; best is the small pot of chicken-liver pate, made in the kitchen to an almost creamy consistency and with an appealing hint of sweetness.

To follow, half a roasted chicken comes golden brown and tarragon-scented, drizzled with a full-bodied chicken jus and matched with Brahimi’s heart-stopping Paris mash, the one where the quantities of milk and butter almost outweigh the potatoes.

There is more mash lurking at the base of the Tuesday special of beef bourguignon, delivered to the table in a gleaming, stainless steel mini casserole. (Patrons will appreciate the fact that the stew is served in the pot but not cooked in it, so the dish’s enjoyment isn’t marred by second-degree burns.) Stir the mash through and the stew becomes a rib-sticking potage riddled with carrots, champignons, leek and red wine.

I wouldn’t normally add Tabasco to the mix but there are bottles on every table alongside a pot of mustard – Brahimi assures us it’s a popular seasoning despite its echoes of the TGIF franchise – so I succumb to temptation, and the dish is definitely better for the extra bite.

Weight watchers might prefer a slab of seared barramundi with its rewarding crisp skin and pillowy flesh, the textures and flavours rounded out with creamy oyster mushrooms, spinach and a lemony butter sauce.

Wines are listed on the left side of the place-mat menu. There are just 25 on offer, a mix of Victorian and French and, while they’re not cheap, they’re not hideously expensive either.

Whites top out at $90 for the sexy ’09 Gerard Boulay Sancerre, while a Mayer pinot noir from the Yarra Valley leads the reds at $95. Every bottle is also available by the glass. A separate cellar list caters to those with more expansive and/or expensive tastes.

Desserts are a line-up of precise classics, with or without a Brahimi twist. The crème brûlée, for

example, conceals a base of ruby-coloured rhubarb beneath its vanilla-bean custard and burnt-sugar crust. A sable biscuit dusted with icing sugar makes an indulgent dipstick.

The weak-willed should steer clear of the tarte tatin. It is the pastry equivalent of mother’s ruin, baked beyond all resistance until its flaky layers are darkly alluring and the sliced apple has collapsed into a jammy caramel. A subtle cinnamon ice-cream accompanies. Too many serves of this and we’ll all become a bit DSK, unable to keep our trousers up. \

DECANTER\ BEN THOMAS FINDS A RENAISSANCE BREWING

HALF a lifetime ago, when I turned 18 and was legally allowed buy a beer in a pub, there

was usually just the choice of a couple of CUB beers on tap in the bar. If you wanted something exotic, it came in a bottle. Or you had a glass of wine.

From my wise old vantage point, I can tell you that modern beer drinkers have never had it better.

The craft-brewing scene in Australia, and Melbourne in particular, has exploded in the past few years. These days there’s likely to be a small brewery producing small-batch, hand-crafted beers within a few kilometres of your front door.

There’s an old saying that beer tastes best when drunk under the shadow of the brewery’s chimney. Whether you live in Thornbury, Richmond or Moorabbin, you can visit these craft breweries and try the latest brews in their freshest state while standing between huge tanks.

Add to that the vast number of boutique bottles that come from all around the world, which are increasingly sold in specialty beer shops such as Hawthorn’s Slowbeer and Purvis Beer in Richmond, you could easily drink a different beer every day for a year or two.

The great thing about this vast range is that there’s a beer for every occasion. Clean-tasting, crisp beers that are perfect for a session at the pub, textural and aromatic wheat beers, and dark ales, porter and stout, that drink well with strong cheeses and chocolate.

The beer style that’s riding the biggest wave of

popularity at the moment is the American pale ale, a highly flavoured, intensely fragrant and hop-driven style that allows brewers to dial up the aromatics to, well, 11. Some pale ales I’ve tried lately have had a nose built around intense, pure hops, with the best brews using these notes as a framework for carrying a wide array of flavours.

You know a style is popular when the big boys start making mass-produced examples, such as Fat Yak, Matilda Bay’s (a Foster’s brand) popular offering, and there are plenty of imports from craft breweries in the US and from local breweries.

There’s been a cider revolution brewing for a couple of years, too, with more and more

interesting examples cropping up from small producers, corporate breweries and imports from the great cider regions of the world, including Normandy in France and northern Spain’s Basque region.

Tasting through a lot of wines, I tend to look towards beers that are

crisp and refreshing, without the high levels of flavours and aromas,

often to the chagrin of my dad, who likes to knock back full-flavoured beers. With

that in mind, this Father’s Day, when I see dad, I’ll be opening a range of the most hoppy, aromatic and full-flavoured pale ales I can get my hands on. \

a resplendent brass colour, this bottle-conditioned beer was conceived by brewer Dan Wright at the back of the oliver’s taranga winery. this full-flavoured beer has complex citrus floral and spice notes along with caramel, orange, tangerine, and banana flavours. it’s smooth and silky in the mouth with well-judged carbonation and a bitter, refreshing twist on the finish that make it a session candidate. it’s only just been released, so keep an eye out for it or ask your local bottleshop to get some in.Food match \ Gingerbread

the first thing you notice about this is how much it looks like a long black coffee when it’s first poured. secondly, you notice the alluring, and possibly polarising, smell of bacon fat on the bouquet. i’m a fan and, looking beyond that, there are aromas of Vegemite, caramel and seville orange. it’s deep and brooding on the palate, with treacle, coffee, more of the bacon notes and pleasant smoky flavours from German Bamberg rauchmaltz malt that are well-judged, rather than dominating. From the kiwi capital Wellington comes this copper-coloured heady beer that displays layered aromas of pure hops, lychee and citrus. it really is like sticking your nose into a bag of dried hops. there’s a fine malt sweetness on the palate that’s well-balanced with complex bitter grapefruit and pine needle (in a good, refreshing way) flavours. a smooth mouthfeel leads to a finish of caramel and cleansing bitter notes.Food match \ Jerk chicken

Part of the Foster’s Group’s stable of beers, this is their craft-beer entry into the world of pale ales. Deep copper in colour, it’s got pleasant aromas and flavours of citrus, malt, caramel and hints of tropical fruits. there’s good depth to the flavours, but they’re not intense, making this a pretty good option for a session down at the pub or at a barbecue. in the mouth, it has a smooth texture – the bubbles form a creamy mousse in the mouth – yet it finishes refreshing and crisp with bitter notes adding interest.Food match \ stilton

in the Belgian wheat beer style, this cloudy, light amber-coloured beer is brewed with a combination of malts derived from wheat and barley. Lifted aromas of citrus juice and zest and white pepper are replicated on the palate, along with coriander seed and a faint hint of cocoa deep in the background. a slightly sour, persistent finish completes this rather accomplished beer.Food match \ moules frites

encased in a champagne-style bottle, this top-of-the-range beer from Beechworth’s highly-acclaimed Bridge road Brewers delivers a beer of style and complexity that’s usually reserved for the beer bars of europe. it has a truly euro feel, with saison yeast creating funky esters on the nose along with orange, wheat and hints of honey. With a silky phenolic texture, this bottle-conditioned beer delivers flavour that builds and builds and a refreshing bitterness on the finish. “Fatherhood,” US comedian Bill Cosby once declared, “is pretending

the present you love most is soap on a rope.’’You don’t see many soaps on ropes these days, but its

21st-century equivalent – the gimmicky man-jobs book – is alive and well and living in a bookshop near you.

Beware this uninspired publishing genre. In recent weeks the book companies have been parading their titles for Father’s Day, meeting no enthusiasm from our staff. “Here’s another great one for dad: 101 Creative Things to do With an Electric Drill.’’ My eyes glaze over. The sales rep, undeterred, tries again. “Here’s a good one: The Little Book of Whittling. Just the thing for the dads in your area.’’

No whittlers in my village – no interest, I tell them. Where are books for the dad who cooks? The dad who likes interior design? The dad who knits?

We think there is a big publishing opportunity for someone with style and a sense of humour to put together a collection of “For the Cool Dad” books.

Based on the diverse interests of our male customers, I would suggest a winner would be a book on music (preferably with lots of lists), covering key trends from Bach to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

Another idea is a book on social media, blogging and website design; many more men, either for business or personal reasons, are wanting to hone their online skills.

A Trinny and Susannah “What Not to Wear”-style guide for blokes would certainly find an audience; so, too, anything that provides advice on how to juggle work, the gym, driving the kids to footy practice, shopping, cooking the occasional family meal and improving their golf game.

Think outside the traditional do-it-yourself/sport/wine/

political bio gift. Here are some tips: What is the current controversial read? Former Victorian police commisioner Christine Nixon’s autobiography? Ex-federal minister Lindsay Tanner’s Sideshow? Paul Gilding’s new book on climate change? Buy one for dad so he can be part of the zeitgeist conversation at dinner parties, the pub or lunch with the boss.

Drill deep into your dad’s past and think about buying a book that might harness a dormant passion. Did he study history at university? Perhaps, in childhood, he had a favourite author. Why not find a collector’s edition of a work by that same author?

Pre-kids, did he enjoy bread-baking, cycling, going to the movies, collecting antiques? There are plenty of beautiful

books available to re-ignite dad’s enthusiasm. If your dad enjoys fiction, consider buying him two

or three new paperbacks. They may be recent award winners, or your bookseller’s recommendations, or

Booker Prize longlisted works. Why not contact a few of your dad’s mates, suggest

they start a book club, then present the idea to your dad on Father’s Day, complete with the membership list, the first prescribed reading title, and a bottle of wine to get their inaugural meeting off to a good start?

Buy dad a gift voucher from your local bookshop. He can then choose a title for himself, and it will also give him an excuse to take 20 minutes for some relaxing book-browsing. Find out when a well-known author is visiting a larger bookshop, book two tickets and take dad on a date, with dinner to follow.

Remember this: most of us can recall, years later, which relative or friend gave us a lovely book. Give dad a book, write a personal note on one of the opening pages, and then tell me he’d prefer a knife-sharpening set! \

This first in a two-book deal suggests journalist-turned-media-commentator-turned-lawyer Stuart Littlemore has found another new successful career path, this time as a crime writer. His character, a Sydney criminal barrister from a well-to-do legal family whose client pool tends to focus on the low end of town, is a likeable, opinionated, charismatic hero. And what is the true nature of his relationship with the British barrister Arabella Engineer? Rollicking good read that Rumpole fans will find particularly amusing. \

One of the strong hardcover performers last Christmas, former newspaper editor Bruce Guthrie’s book has now been released in paperback. The book tracks Guthrie’s journey over a 30-plus-year career in journalism, including his much-publicised sacking as Herald Sun editor in late 2008 and subsequent (and successful) unfair dismissal

court case. Guthrie’s overview of Australia’s changing media landscape is fascinating,

and his recollections of events within various Fairfax and News Limited hierarchies will resonate with readers who enjoy the corporate bunfight genre. But at the heart of this book is Guthrie’s own story, and the kind of

courage that sometimes accompanies injustice. Highly recommended. \

There are two books we are currently recommending to men who like to cook, or women who would like their men to cook. The first is Jamie’s 30-Minute Meals, by Jamie Oliver, the big seller of 2011. The second is Donna Hay’s Fast, Fresh, Simple, which we mentioned in these pages a couple of months ago. The reason for revisiting it is its apparent appeal to men. “I like a cookbook which I can read in the morning, and buy the ingredients that night on the way home from work,” one customer told us. Some recipes are also dead easy, but still flavoursome and impressive (salt-and-pepper chicken with steamed sugar snap peas, garlic prawn pasta and Hay’s version of the steak with three veg come to mind). \

OK, so now we’re ignoring our own advice – avoid gimmicky Father’s Day books! But we can’t resist highlighting this little one from Gustav Temple, founder of London’s The Chap magazine. This satirical journal has been operating since the late 1990s, and in this book Temple invites readers to “submit yourself to the ultimate sartorial inspection”. Chapters include “The Country”, “Formality”, “Dandyism” and “Caddery” and advise men how to become one of the subsets. Is your dad “a city gent”? Perhaps he’d like to be one. “These days the City Gent has moved rather swiftly to being the country’s favourite pariah, and is forced to wear his beloved pinstriped suits and bowlers only at night, in select gentlemen’s clubs, to avoid being stoned in the street.” \

Like his father, Liam Finn has a knack of writing pop songs – the syrupy kind that pack in melody, hook and plenty of purpose.

The son of Neil Finn, of Split Enz and Crowded House fame, has just released his second studio album, FOMO (an acronym for fear of missing out), and says heading home to make the record was his best move yet.

Finn was born in Melbourne but as a young child moved with his family to New Zealand. It’s there he started a band called Betchadupa in 1997 – his first foray in the world of pop and rock.

A decade later he decided to pursue a solo career, releasing his 2007 debut titled I’ll Be Lightning. If that record was anything to go by, it showed Finn’s natural ability to write.

The album featured 20 songs – a lengthy collection for a debut … and for a young musician barely getting his feet wet in the wild world of rock’n’roll.

He played most of the instruments himself and

Finn’s decision to work with producer Burke Reid was a natural coming together. The pair met during Finn’s Betchadupa days when Reid, a Canadian now living in Australia, was playing with Sydney band Gerling. In fact, Gerling was the only Australian band signed to the infamous Flying Nun label that Finn’s old band also called home.

“After all these years of touring I was craving to get back home; it was a place I had only been back to for summers. It had been a good seven years of me living abroad and touring and it was quite confronting to be there,” says Finn. “As the reality of what it is I came here to do sank in, I started to feel a bit disconnected from the world. It wasn’t easy to get back into recording and thinking about a new album.

“Not having lots of other people around while you’re recording is a strange thing, but the constant change of scenery that I got used to suddenly wasn’t going to happen. It was definitely a shock to the

recorded the songs at his father’s Roundhouse Studios in Auckland. It showed a then 24-year-old musician exploring his craft, finding comfort in bruised lyrics and fiddling with rhythm and sonic atmosphere like few can master at that age.

“I’ll Be Lightning was written after coming out of a long relationship,” says Finn, who is touring to promote FOMO. “I think as a result of that, the album had a melancholic pondering about it because that was where I was at back then.”

Now, with the new album, Finn says a different side of him is exposed. “FOMO has a lot more confidence than the last record,” he says, hinting that the acronym is an in-house joke among family members about not seeing each other enough.

“It feels like it’s a reflection of me spending two years on the road, about looking people in the eye and delivering on that.”

At 27, Finn feels more certain than ever about the direction he is taking with his music. He’s comfortable in his own skin and feels the years of hard work touring, playing with the likes of Pearl Jam, Wilco and the Black Keys, has finally paid off.

He blurred the lines for fans when, after his debut, he made an EP in 2009 titled Champagne in Seashells and then a one-off album in collaboration with friends under the name of BARB in 2010. That featured friends, including Eliza Jane Barnes among others, but it was just that – a one-off experiment.

“I went to New York and Montreal for a bit of soul-searching and to get a perspective outside of New Zealand,” says Finn, who began writing FOMO last year but wasn’t sure his decision to do so in New Zealand was the right call.

“But then while I was away I realised it was important for me to get back to New Zealand and continue trying. In some ways I realised how good I had it using dad’s studio.”

system. Even not performing as much made me realise how much I missed the adrenalin. It’s like a drug, and I had huge withdrawals. I remember feeling fidgety and asking myself, why do I feel like this? It was intense.”

He got himself a little beachside house in Piha while in New Zealand and tells of taking regular walks up Mount Eden last winter, a stone’s throw from his parents’ place. It gave Finn a chance to disconnect from the studio, fill his lungs with fresh air and have his father by his side to talk about nothing specific, really.

“I realised how much I loved talking to my dad about stuff, about anything really. It was good to find

that family time again,” says Finn. “Having said that, we are both highly opinionated so it’s always going to make

for an interesting conversation. I have always had a huge amount of respect for where dad is coming from.

“He certainly has a specific view of things, and they are a direct product

of coming out of the ’70s and ’80s, and I don’t have that by comparison. I

know that musically and as a songwriter I have nobody better to turn to.

“Yes, growing up in this kind of household (with its) musical reputation comes with baggage, but it evens itself out because to me it’s my reality. I don’t know it any different, but it is nothing I have ever worried or been upset about.”

Songs such as Neurotic World that capture the confusion of modern-day living spawn comparisons with his father’s work. Emotions are real; stories are told in the most eloquent of ways.

Held by swirling piano and electronic tweaks, the song is mellow and breezy, hinting at the atmosphere that is to come on the album. Roll of the Eye is slightly more agitated in its indie

purpose and Don’t Even Know Your Name uses solid harmony to spotlight an interest in love.

“I have a new girlfriend,” says Finn proudly. “She has certainly inspired this new album. We are about to experience what it’s like to have a year of touring ahead. This whole record is a product of that experience, of moving back to New Zealand and in some ways having an anxious and strange confused year creatively and within myself, but one that found happiness in love and being homesick again.” \

For 15 years he terrorised politicians on The 7.30 Report. now he’s moved to byron bay to give his brain “something of a breather”. As Father’s Day approaches, PeTer WiLMoTH

hears about the side of kerry o’brien we don’t know – father of six and grandfather of six.

JUST quietly, I’m having trouble imagining Kerry O’Brien paddling away in a sea kayak. And maybe he is too, because he laughed when I asked whether he’d contemplated taking up longboarding at Byron Bay’s Wategos Beach.

Seven months ago he moved from Sydney to Byron Bay and fleetingly considered getting a sea kayak. He also planned to play a lot of golf. But then, as always, work got in the way. “Before we got up here I was giving myself a lecture that I mustn’t play golf any more than twice a week because that would become indulgent,” O’Brien says. “But so far this year I’ve had time for three games.”

Still, it’s more time than he’s used to. After 15 years at the helm of The 7.30 Report, O’Brien, 65, bailed last December and took on a new role topping-and-tailing the ABC’s Four Corners, which is set to celebrate its 50th birthday. It’s a return of sorts as he has already worked twice for the program.

“I was there in the mid-’70s and again in the mid-’80s, and when I first went to This Day Tonight in early 1972, as much as I loved what TDT was doing, my eye was always on Four Corners because it was such a giant on the journalism landscape.”

It’s a great gig for O’Brien – one day a week in Sydney filming the links, the rest of the time his own. He needed the space in his life, he says. Fifteen years was enough at The 7.30 Report.

O’Brien and his partner, the journalist Sue Javes, last year quit their jobs (Javes was for a decade a reporter about radio for The Sydney Morning Herald) and moved to a place they’d fallen in love with.

“I come from Queensland and we have had a tradition over about the last 20 years of going up to Queensland every Christmas for a family get-together and we’ve often gone through Byron Bay and occasionally we’ve stopped there,” O’Brien says.

“I’ve got friends who live there and we’ve had a couple of brief holidays there and I suppose in the last seven or eight years I have gone to the writers’ festival. And it’s a statement of the obvious that it is one of the most beautiful parts of Australia.

“The only frustration for us so far is that it’s been hard to establish a kind of rhythm to our lives because I am coming down to (Sydney) each week and I’ve taken on some other commitments that mean I am jumping around the countryside a bit.

“The reason we’re there really is to have more space in our lives and more time to kind of relax into this chapter in our lives. When I did step down from 7.30 I just wanted to give my brain something of a breather from what I have been doing for so long.”

He wants to embark on projects with Javes. “I’d very much like to do something creative with Sue. She’s walked away from her job in journalism too, and we just want to see what evolves. That could be working on a book together, it could be working on some other kind of writing project, it could be working up something for television … ”

O’Brien’s early years didn’t point to the brilliant career he would experience. He remembers being “hardly a high-achieving scholar”. “I had a lot of fun at school but scholastically they were nine misspent years, really,” he says. “In the back of my mind I vaguely wanted to do law and I was working at the equivalent in Queensland of the Crown Solicitor’s office. I never did get to university. I was too busy having fun.

“So I was a non-achieving young public servant who was almost half hoping I’d be called up in the draft to go to Vietnam (which would) solve my own problems for me, when I stumbled into weekend work at the Channel Nine newsroom in Brisbane. From the moment I walked into that place and was shown the corner where the police radio was and felt the hum and the vibe of that newsroom, I was hooked. And that, of course, changed my life. I was probably going to find my way out somewhere but looking back I just feel maybe journalism and I fitted like a hand in a glove and I loved it.

“What I see looking back now is that I am an innately curious person, and I think all good journalists are. We should be driven by the curiosity to find things out and to understand things and then to communicate them. And I suppose a love of storytelling. You know, we’re all raconteurs in our own backyard, aren’t we? I bet if you’re sitting down with a couple of glasses of wine and a few mates over a dinner or a lunch you tell a lot of yarns, don’t you? And we’re paid to do it as journalists.

“I regret that journalism is going through a rough patch now and I am sure it will come out of it. Journalism doesn’t die. There is always going to be a need for good journalism. It will find its way through. But the impediments are pretty bloody big right now for people practising good journalism.”

At his best, O’Brien as an interviewer was very good. No one could dispute his research, or his doggedness. He got as close as one could to breaking down John Howard’s famous lawyerly defences. And he was tough. He once opened an interview with the then-unpopular head of the ABC this way: “Jonathan Shier, how much more time do you think you could reasonably expect to demonstrate to the public that you can actually do this job?”

He got lucky a few times. Kevin Rudd lost his temper one night while talking about climate change and dismissed O’Brien as “living in 7.30 Report-land.” Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said of himself that only his “carefully prepared, scripted remarks” could be relied upon.

“I have had varying degrees of satisfaction about interviews I’ve done over the years, but I have never walked away from one yet that I have felt completely happy about,” he says. “You can reflect on these things too much, and I don’t, but I don’t think there’s any such thing as the perfect interview.”

He has had his critics over the years. Malcolm

16 The weekly review \ august 17, 2011

Page 17: HDV-Heidelberg-20110817-Edition65

Turnbull had a crack at O’Brien for his overly long questions. How did O’Brien reflect on Turnbull’s commentary? “How did I reflect or how long did I reflect?” he says. “Look, a fair comment if that’s how he saw it, but what he needs to understand is I came to the long question as a technique simply because I got so sick and tired of politicians having a lend of me if I just asked the simple, straightforward question without any premises. They would just treat it as an invitation to prattle their line for two minutes before I’d show them the next one.

“The reason some of my questions were as long as they were is because I was endeavouring to anticipate the kind of propaganda lines that would come as part of their answer. I was endeavouring to take those lines out … Maybe sometimes they were too long. But that was the intent behind them.”

A s we prepare to celebrate Father’s Day, I ask O’Brien about his approach to raising six children, three from his first marriage and three with Javes. His children range in age

from 42 to 17. He has six grandchildren. “I’ve got, in a sense, two generations of children,”

he says. “I feel like I have been parenting now for … 42 years. It’s been a fascinating process. One of the really remarkable things to me is the difference in what my three older children went through in their childhood compared to my three younger children. It’s such a different age, such a different set of circumstances in the world that my younger children have grown up in. It’s been an age dominated by mass media to an incredible degree. It’s an age where children grow up knowing everything. They are exposed to far more than my older children were and certainly far, far more than I ever was.

“The story is yet to be told of this generation and how the changing environment has impacted on

them and what kind of adults they become.”It’s a very sophisticated generation, I suggest.

“(Yes) but it’s also an anxious generation. I think that in many ways they haven’t been allowed to have a childhood. I think there’s a really big question mark around that.”

Did his parenting differ from the two groups of kids? “Sadly … I don’t think I am any wiser, you know. You can keep making the same mistakes. Look, I think as a parent you love your children, you want to do the best for them and try to strike the balance between giving a helping hand, helping them build the foundations of their lives but at the same time preparing them for the rough and tumble of the world ahead of them – it’s a tough call to make at times how you strike that balance as a parent. I still don’t think I have got the balance right. I am going to have to wait for my next life as a frog or something.”

I ask O’Brien how he coped with being a father in a separated household. “Well, I think that I was determined, (and) I am sure (his first wife) Carol was determined, too, that the separation was going to be that we were going to minimise the impact on the children as best we could, and I think we succeeded in that significantly.”

I ask about his children. “One is in IT, two are in the communications end of corporate relations. The younger kids are still finding their feet. One is working at being – I want to be careful because I don’t want to sound pretentious on their behalf – but both my younger boys are extremely creative.

“One is involved in comedy – he’s just starting to find his feet in comedy and writing plays. He’s just finished writing his second play, which he’s directing at a little theatre in Newtown (Sydney) in October.

“He’s organised the venue, he’s just been through the audition process, he has had to make a number of commitments with the theatre, so it’s a terrific process he is putting himself through.

“My other boy is engaged in both music and writing, but how that’s going to work out … he knows what a tough road that is and he’s just beginning to scratch the surface, so who knows? He’s doing a postgraduate diploma in editing and publishing. So they’re all creative kids, none of them has a sort of clear view of wanting to be a doctor or a lawyer or a nurse or an architect or anything simple like that.”

What about a journalist? “No, they’re all sceptical of that, and possibly with good reason.”

Has he been kept young with a 17-year-old daughter? “Like a lot of truisms, I suppose it’s half true. Maybe they also wear you down. I’m not rushing into old age, put it that way. I’m sure most people of my age would say the same thing.

“I’ve been very lucky because I have lived a really interesting working life – 46 years as a journalist – and I have been given some wonderful opportunities. We’ve travelled a lot, we’ve been through a number of changing landscapes.

“And I haven’t lost my zest for life.” \ [email protected]

Inclusion and partnering are the keys to plotting the way forward, according to Bill Kerr, an expert at opening doors, writes Helen GrImaux.

There’s an Aesop fable about the sun and the north wind … it goes like this: The two are in a power struggle over who has the strongest influence. Then a traveller comes along. They

agree that the one who makes the traveller take off his coat first wins.

The harder the north wind blows, the more the traveller pulls his coat around him, until the wind gives up. The sun then shines and warms the traveller, who eases off his coat and throws it over his arm.

The fable demonstrates the power of persuasion and strategic thinking, where the aim is to get the best results, rather than results at any cost.

Cut to modern times. The scene centres on a billion-dollar deal to build over a bunch of cluttered old car parks, outdated buildings and old railway track reserves. The site is only eight kilometres from Melbourne’s central business district and is 35 hectares of prime real estate in one of the funkiest, most cosmopolitan communities in this metropolis.

Here, Sydney Road intersects with its east-west freight nemesis at Bell Street. The strip shopping centre has evolved in the past 200 years into one of the most eclectic areas of any inner suburb.

It’s a delightful free-market mix of low-, medium- and higher-density residential, alongside ageing commercial and light-industrial precincts ripe for “gentrification” – a showcase of the classic architecture of Victoria’s 19th-century boom time … and it’s built on bluestone.

The highest birth rate in the city and a treasure trove of urban renewal opportunities are catapulting this colourful logjam of cultures along the famous Sydney Road strip into the 21st century.

Now, a decade down the strategic planning track as defined by Melbourne’s activity centre policies, two men rapidly throw future scenarios back and forth, indicative of the many nuances their challenge presents.

Taking their cues from the Aesop fable, Moreland City Council chief executive Peter Brown and “partnering” expert Bill Kerr are nearing the end of a long road fraught by winds of change.

Crunch timeFor Brown, it’s crunch time. The Coburg Initiative ticks every strategic box for its category as one of Melbourne’s main activity-centre precincts – the council’s community consultation has been exhaustive and, incredibly, there’s no controversy.

Council’s billion-dollar plan builds on all the colour and movement of this multicultural food and fashion mecca, with plenty of housing to keep people in the heart of their village. There are world-class design opportunities to build in co-energy generation systems – including wind and solar – as well as water-capture and recycling facilities, as features of new commercial and high-density residential construction.

A new civic heart, a few major road and rail realignments (in conjunction with the state government) and Coburg may get the makeover it needs for the next 100 years.

But, for the moment, the Upfield line’s above-ground rail crossing gridlocks Bell Street traffic, while Sydney Road crawls for kilometres from Brunswick to Coburg, regardless of the hour.

That’s the problem with big plans … they need big backers, and lots of them, especially those partnerships between public and private sectors that seek to rebuild the infrastructure and shape of a city that is home, work and community for hundreds of thousands of people .

That’s where Kerr comes in. He explains his role, much as that of the fabled sun, using leverage rather than force. His word is “place-maker”. His job is to get The Coburg Initiative sunnyside-up.

To give this place a new heart, both men know they must warm the passions of a notoriously cold and calculating investment market, so development dollars can flow and cranes can go up on the Coburg skyline.

future time with eagle-eyed long-term investment experts. In tandem, he crunches return estimates in real time with razor-sharp, growth-hungry commercial developers, the latter usually keen to start yesterday and usually more keen to balance books now, in anticipation of their next headline act.

The rise and rise of Melbourne’s bull property market over the past 15 years has been phenomenal. Even recent cooling is a mere ice-block in a heatwave next to this city’s 20 to 50-year growth forecasts. The only dark side has been the city’s failure to curb its infamous urban sprawl and turn its development prosperity towards retro-fitting a predominantly 19th-century metropolis into a working 21st-century city.

Think global, act localKerr Partnering’s principal clients are municipal and state governments, representing the people for whom urban renewal and sustainable city living are all about – their homes, jobs, shops, transport and services.

Local governments inevitably juggle at least two hats at the major-project planning round table – as stewards of civic assets, and as dispensers of rates. They are also local planning authorities, albeit creatures of state government masters. And this is especially so when it comes to capital-city planning and new environmentally sustainable design (ESD) guidelines, such as Victoria’s recently introduced six-star residential building code.

“Developers usually see local government, and public

Long-term vision:Bill Kerr (left), and Moreland CEO Peter Brown. (darrian traynOr)

In the business of town planning, Kerr helps decision makers decide. He clears pathways, opens doors and explores new avenues for productive partnerships with public- and private-sector players – and the all-important bankers and investors who, along with the public purse, underwrite all our futures.

“It’s more about understanding people and their sense of place than who you know,” Kerr says, although knowing who’s who – and why – is crucial, and takes time and “street cred” to attain.

Kerr builds teams around multimillion-dollar projects that may affect the lives of tens of thousands, even millions, of people. Such projects have lead-in times counted in decades, sometimes centuries, rather than months or years. One case that Kerr encountered in England recently offered a project lease of 250 years, set among people and places that have existed in situ for more than a millennium.

Successful partnering is not about dividing up the spoils before a building is built, Kerr points out.

Building in bull timesKerr Partnering has worked alongside the main players involved in complicated Melbourne projects at Greensborough and Frankston activity centres, “aligning organisational objectives and functional requirements with innovative and financially viable property solutions”, as the company blurb says.

In money-speak, Kerr crunches real numbers in

“It’s about havIng honest conversatIons early about what everyone wants.”

consultation, as obstructionist; local government is seen as the amenity police,” Kerr says. He cites the building of trust as the first imperative of any major urban renewal projects that open public and private purses.

State government also has many hats at the planning round table, owning such key land assets as roads, waterways and public transport corridors, and being the ultimate decision maker on the big changes.

Increasingly, the federal government, through its Cities of the Future program, is driving new ESD standards in residential, commercial and industrial design and construction. These standards require new inner-city commercial buildings, particularly, to develop site-specific energy-generation capacities, as well as design features that save on non-renewable energy use. The design of modern waste-management systems, such as internal waste water recycling for toilet flushing, for example, is critical to achieving both excellence in green building design and a solution to the biggest problem of every major city in the world – recycling and refuse disposal.

And that’s just the public-sector side of any major project. Kerr’s magic lies in finding the right people to sit around the rest of the table – the investors, economists and commercial experts, the visionaries and pragmatists of the private sector whose free-market drivers need to sit comfortably alongside those of their public-sector partners.

Building creditsFor Kerr, there’s never been a better window of opportunity to build serious new creativity and innovation into Melbourne’s future liveability if infrastructure investment in a sustainable city can just shift into a longer-term gear.

He wants the local development sector to get savvy with future trends, including carbon pricing and emissions trading offsets. “Right now, the standard form of investment looks at returns in three to five years,” Kerr says. “If the marketplace is to get serious about urban regeneration, it needs to attract patience capital.”

His view of the local investment culture contrasts with the approach of close Asian neighbours who, he says, enter foreign markets, including our own, for the long haul … think beyond steel and coal, think solar panels, the world’s largest manufacturer having developed his expertise in Australia to set up global manufacturing in China. The commercial construction sector, particularly, stands to make significant savings if it turns around energy use and wasted resources and builds seriously green.

“And the financiers, such as superannuation funds, need to see the value of longer-term investments (in ESD), which they won’t find in blue gums, olives and wine grapes,” Kerr suggests. “Surely it’s better to earn 6 to 10 per cent per annum over the long term than riding the highs and lows?”

Common groundCommon ground can be hard to find when the system is adversarial from the start, but that’s the part of strategic planning Kerr finds most interesting, and crucial to

a good result. “It’s about having honest conversations early about what everyone wants,” says Kerr, who is more able to describe what his work is not about – which is saying, “I have the answer for you”. “It’s no good coming to the talking table with preconceived solutions before you’ve heard what everyone wants.

“It’s really about designing participatory processes, which ask people to accept fresh thinking; it’s about participation rather than engagement.”

Kerr has stood with Peter Brown through exhaustive meetings and one-on-one talks with high-end finance, big business, construction giants, community groups and individuals – Kerr does not like leaving anyone out, and Brown needs to be sure all partners, especially those elected to safeguard community capital, are very clear they are setting off on a long journey together.

Brown sums up their quest: “It’s about reminding ourselves we are creating a legacy here, not just money.”

Money alone, both know, can be wasted quickly when big projects go belly-up. Nothing brings the risky end of property investment into starker relief than recent examples of American cities with good bricks and mortar still in place, but people in a crisis of homelessness not seen since the Depression of the 1930s.

Moreland Council’s partnership with Kerr has brought The Coburg Initiative a long way from the blueprint it was only two years ago. Its scope and potential, its risks and projected returns are now on spreadsheets with investment and development experts, along with a comprehensive project roll-out … just waiting for the winds of good fortune to swing north.\

iconic street, iconic houseBareena has been fully renovated, has a new wing and first floor, and everything has been done in a way that

is sympathetic to the original, writes MARIA HARRIS. W hen a builder buys a house,

it’s a fair bet that any renovation or extension will be done to exacting

standards – especially when he plans to make it a family home.

That’s what the owner/builder of Bareena, circa 1905, did when he bought the magnificent Queen Anne residence 15 years ago.

Red brick, tuck-pointed and with cream-painted timber fretwork trimming the verandah, it is a gracious house that stands tall and proud in one of Ivanhoe’s most iconic streets. It is also a very good advertisement for buying on the high side of the street, where it gets elevation, views across to Ivanhoe East and a presence that comes from height.

Bareena survived the 1970s, when these sort of houses fell out of fashion and many were demolished. It went from shared rental house to family home again, including being owned by a plumber. That good fortune meant that the original elaborate pressed-metal ceilings were preserved because the plumber maintained the roof, the downpipes and the guttering.

Today Bareena is fully renovated and with a new wing and first floor. It has everything most modern families want – two formal rooms, study, a contemporary granite kitchen, meals and family room, four bathrooms, north-facing outdoor entertainment area and pool.

ICONIC STREET, ICONIC HOUSEBut what is striking here are the extraordinary

lengths to which the owner/builder has gone to achieve period perfection.

The renovation is so sympathetic to the original that from the street you’d swear that the wing set discreetly back from the main body of the house was original. Its bay window matches the bay window in the front living room and the fretwork on the verandah is identical to the original fretwork at the front. The bay window in the living room has a curved, padded matching window seat.

Inside, new fretwork, painstakingly cut using a jigsaw, matches the original.

“I made a huge effort to keep everything the same,” says the owner.

That effort to evoke the grandness of the Queen Anne era extended to importing roof slates and terracotta-tiled roof trim.

Stepping inside the front door at Bareena is like winding the clock back to an more genteel time.

Original pressed-metal ceilings in the formal front rooms are complemented by Edwardian-style dado panels made from Lincrusta.

This British product – created in the 19th century and claimed to be the first washable wall covering – is tough, long-lasting and has an embossed surface that is used for refurbishing period houses as well as for commercial purposes. It was also used in royal carriages and is still

manufactured according to traditional methods that sometimes includes using 100-year-old rollers to create the distinctive patterns.

Lace Interiors, of Essendon – a specialist in interior design for period houses – decorated the house using a soft palette of colours and elaborate wall friezes in several rooms and patterned carpets to reflect the times. Baltic pine floors have been newly polished.

Opening from the entry, a vestibule in the middle of the house, provides the transition between old and new. At the side of this vestibule a sweeping staircase, lit by a clerestory windows complete with stained-glass, leads the way to the first floor.

Past the vestibule, the new part of the house includes the informal living and meals area with doors opening to the north-facing pool and outdoor entertainment zone. Polished timber floors and another wall frieze continue the period theme from the original part of the house.

The kitchen, with granite benches and contemporary appliances, including a 900-millimetre Smeg stainless steel oven, overlooks the meals area, which allows the cook to keep in touch with what’s going on at the table and in the family room.

The carpeted grand curved staircase from the vestibule opens to a hall with three more bedrooms and two bathrooms off it. Skylights let light into this level. \

This property is part-resort, part-bush hideaway. It has a fully-tiled 10 x 5-metre pool, flood-lit tennis court, gym, and billiards room. The property is also hidden away from the world on a tree-cloaked,

4100-square metre block. It sits off a stretch of Old Eltham Road that appears more popular with bikes and walkers than with cars.

Out back, big old trees rather than high fences indicate where the property finishes and the neighbour’s begins. This house is also very much a family-friendly place to live. It has a zoned kids’ wing with family bathroom, whereas the parents’ en suite bedroom is located away from the

action by the entrance. The house was built in the 1970s and was in original condition until the current owners came along 2½ years ago. They thoughtfully managed to update the interiors by marrying the old and new. For example, the lounge has retained its exposed-brick fireplace but now has plush new carpets.

The slate in the family hub remains but the kitchen is brand new, with appliances installed high up for child safety. The rumpus has a trendy ’70s bar, but the heavy timber surfaces have been painted white. To suit the family’s needs, an extra study was installed in what was the old sauna. The property includes a detached self-contained unit down by the tennis court. \ LIAM CARTER

Toorac Drive (spelt with a C, not a K) is a quite tree-lined street that rises up the hill from Sherbourne Road. While there are no Toorak-style mansions here, the houses are certainly big enough for large

families with enough yard front and back for the kids to play. This four-bedroom residence sits on a 790-square metre block and makes a pretty first impression. A path cuts through established garden beds to the front porch. Built in 1973, the house has been updated by the current owners, a family with three children. Walls were removed to open up the living spaces. The kitchen is large enough to cook big family meals. The four bedrooms are also large and include built-in wardrobes. The main bedroom has a renovated en suite with a new shower and vanity. The kids share a bathroom with bath, shower and separate toilet. Downstairs, a large rumpus with a study, toilet and wet bar is the ultimate kids’ retreat. The north-facing backyard has an above-ground pool with a deck. \ LIAM CARTER

They don’t call it Eltham Woods for nothing. This part of Eltham is defined by its bush-cloaked hills, maze of winding roads and understated houses on good-sized blocks. This single-level, three-bedroom property

is no exception. The freshly rendered brick-veneer house shares a 740-square metre block with a solar-heated pool with large deck, a paved entertainment area and twin lawn terraces. These versatile outdoor areas are matched with comfortable living spaces. The front lounge is ideal for any occasion, thanks to the elegant swag-and-tails curtains and plush white carpets. The family comes together in the open-plan kitchen, family and meals area, which is lined in polished boards. Glass sliding doors open to the covered rear patio. The nearby laundry also leads outside. Two bedrooms, both with built-in wardrobes, share a renovated bathroom. The main bedroom has an en suite and walk-in wardrobe. This property is just around the corner from Eltham Woods pre-school. \ LIAM CARTER

w ith European economies teetering, the

Middle East imploding and some questioning the whole future of capitalism, there is just

one, more important, issue for Melbourne’s million-dollar-plus home buyers right now: what should I do this Saturday?

Over the past couple of weeks, our clients have been watching the spectacle unfold and wondering whether this was the right time to act. Like them, you are probably asking yourself: should I take the plunge to buy a home or, given everything that is going on, should I sit tight, watch from afar and do nothing?

Our first suggestion is don’t stress. Now is a time when only those who can keep their heads and think their way through the alternatives can make good decisions.

But aren’t we in an elevated-risk position? What about America, Italy and Spain? Sure, some of you may be in an elevated-risk position – others may not be. The question is whether what’s happening in America and elsewhere is the right yardstick for your home-buying decisions.

By some definitions, now is no riskier a time to buy than last month or last year or last decade.

Prices are lower and interest rates look less likely to rise now than they did last year. On the jobs front, the figures look reasonable (and, by the way, did you lose your job during the GFC, and if you did, how hard was it to find another one?). And you may well have more choice on properties this month than you did in the past three months.

On a micro level, your family may be on more solid foundations financially and/or emotionally than at any other time.

But is this the right time to buy? Couldn’t prices go down even further?

We would all prefer to buy at the bottom of the market. But who knows when we

hit bottom? People were scared to buy during the 2008 GFC downturn, but more comfortable buying when prices were higher in 2007 and 2010.

In 2011 prices are down again, but almost all home buyers have a higher degree of discomfort about the market than they did this time last year because they don’t “know” what is going to happen.

But have you in the past operated on all matters with exact certainty? Sometimes you just have to do what has to be done – no matter what is happening in the world outside. In that sense, essentially this last fortnight is no different from last week or last year. None of us ever “knows” for sure.

The real question may not be one of world affairs or house prices – it may be whether you can act in times of uncertainty. Is buying now in your family’s best interests and can you get an increased level of comfort?

For those that remember, Bob Dylan said, “the times they are a-changing”. This phenomenon of uncertainty is nothing new and, as for comfort, most of us like certainty.

We are not saying you should buy now. What we’re saying is that you should be trying to line the ducks up again now they have escaped. Try to make sense even if previously it was all very clear to you.

Why? Because we know that making good decisions for our family is better than making bad ones.

Some of you will need to act (even if it is to make a decision to do nothing), because nothing stays the same.

The role of a professional adviser is not to tell you whether it’s the right time to buy – our role is to outline your options, let you decide, and if you decide to go ahead, then we can provide the experience, nous and skills to negotiate a maximised outcome for you.

And really that is the crux of it – perceptions, thinking clearly, focusing on the right outcomes for your family in a time of uncertainty.

Oh, and good luck! \

Buying a rundown house on a good street is an old piece of real-estate wisdom that these vendors have put to the test. Since the young couple came along nine years ago, this 1950s weatherboard house has

certainly moved up in the world. A rabbit warren of pokey rooms with dark carpets has been transformed into an airy, stylish and comfortable place to live. Walls were removed to open up the living spaces and allow natural light inside. Original Tasmanian oak floors were uncovered and polished, and surfaces were painted white. The new kitchen takes pride of place at the hub of the house and includes stunning Quarella reconstituted quartz benches, stainless steel appliances and designer tapware. The bathroom has been updated with similar refinery. It has a floating vanity, stylish tiled recesses and two picture windows. The 812-square metre block is dotted with mature Victorian ash trees. The backyard has two separate decks and is completely private. The three bedrooms have pretty double-hung windows. \ LIAM CARTER

This property is on the market for the first time. It doesn’t take much to see why the family that built it in 1973 took so long to leave. It sits high on a hilltop cul-de-sac. The property’s most unusual feature is also

its drawcard. The 800-square metre block is completely flat, almost unheard of in hilly Montmorency. Out back, there is a big patch of lawn that has seen many games of kick-to-kick, and pretty garden beds. Garden views can be enjoyed from the paved outdoor entertainment area, which has a built-in barbecue, or from the family and dining rooms. Much of the house is original but has been so well-maintained that it’s hard to notice any wear and tear. There are some stylish retro features, including the fireplace with a large copper hood and exposed-brick hearth in the lounge. The family bathroom has an electric-blue vanity, which would be a shame to replace. The street-facing main bedroom has an en suite and walk-in wardrobe. Storage is not a problem thanks to the double garage and adjacent workshop, which has a pot-belly stove. \ LIAM CARTER

This three-bedroom cottage is attracting solid interest from hip young buyers looking for affordability, character and vicinity to the CBD. It ticks all three boxes. Built as part the 1956 Olympic Village, the property is

steeped in charm. The red-brick façade and vaulted portico entrance introduce a good sized-living space lined in polished Baltic pine floors. Double-hung sash windows and a recent lick of white paint ensure this hub is light and airy. Original 1950s cabinets in the kitchen are matched with more modern additions, including a vast timber workbench and stainless steel appliances. Fresh carpets and elegant white curtains ensure the three bedrooms are clean and comfortable. The bathroom was done up about the same time as the kitchen in the late 1990s. The block is modest at just 368 square metres, but a big established front yard ensures the house is set back from the street. A pebbled courtyard is at the side of the house. \ LIAM CARTER

cycle cooling, hydronic heating & gas fire place will keep you comfortable while you take in the views of tree

covered hills. The beautiful kitchen is large & is well complemented by adjoining family & rumpus rooms that

flow onto wide verandahs and a terrific gazebo complete with café blinds for year round enjoyment. Fully

landscaped, the setting is park like and serene. Comfortable studio, workshop and plenty of car parking

includes a garage for a big boat or caravan. So private yet convenient, the train is less than 1 km, the
