Word at Walnut Street Bryan McAlister The T HE E DIFIER Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and the things wherewith one may edify another (Rom. 14:19) Walnut Street Church of Christ Volume 51 March 14, 2021 Number 11 In 1957, a monastery in Thailand was being relocated and a group of monks was put in charge of moving a giant clay statue of Buddha. In the midst of the move, one of the monks noticed a crack in the figure, so the work was immediately halted before more damage occurred. That night, one of the monks went to check on the statue. He aimed his flashlight all over the figure, but suddenly noticed a reflected gleam from the crack. His curiosity aroused, he procured a hammer and chisel and began widening the split. As he knocked off piece after piece of clay, the statue grew brighter and brighter - and after hours of work the clay was all gone, and in its place stood a golden image of Buddha. Many historians now believe that the original statue had been covered with a layer of clay by Thai monks several hundred years earlier, to hide its worth before an attack by the Burmese army. All of the monks present on that occasion died in the battle, and it was not until 1957 that its great value was discovered. A similarity exists between that old statue and modern Christians. Afraid we might be cast out by society or deserted by family and friends, we hide behind a shell that makes us look like average people. But Jesus called us to a difference that should be easily seen by others. "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your father which is in heaven." One au- thor recently described our dilemma by saying we have put “A Christian spin on the American dream.” (Randall Toye). We have our possessions in abundance, we keep pace with each other materially, but in reality there is little if any distinction between us and the world. Sacrifice; how have you done at it this past year, week, month, today? When it comes to the driving force of your life, that thing which motivates you to get up, stand up, speak up, and wake up, has it been more of the Lord and less of you in recent days? When it comes to the money you’ve earned has He been first on your mind to thank Him and to give back to Him? When it comes to your pride, do you cling to it or do your surrender self preservation in order to be an example for the Master? When it comes to the time you have at your disposal, have you offered your time in thought, in action, in word, and in deed to God? When it comes to sacrifice has your attitude been more Cain than David? Cain offered what was convenient (Genesis 4:4). David was given the chance to offer what was convenient but insisted, “No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; nor will I offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God with that which costs me nothing” (II Samuel 24:24). The cost of our sacrifice to and for God ought to be surrendered from the best that we have to offer. When you consider the great price sacrifice for your soul and for mine, nothing less will suffice. The sacrifice of Jesus wasn’t common, although some count it as a common thing (Hebrews 10:29). The sacrifice of Jesus wasn’t easy, although some would believe it was (Matthew 26:39). His sacrifice was for you. So tell me, has it cost you anything or has it been convenient? The Walnut Street Shepherds thank you for your excellent response to our recent survey. Beginning today, full capacity balcony seating will be available. We will continue to arrange socially distanced seating for the main floor. Masks are still encouraged to be worn when moving about the building. Thank you for your continued encouragement and prayers.
