July 2016 Dear Lower School Families, There is a feeling of renewal and excitement at the start of the academic school year as we welcome new and returning students, families and faculty. It is a joyful gathering, one that feels a little like a family reunion, and reminds us all that we are part of a special learning community. Although there are several more weeks of summer recess left to enjoy, the faculty and I are looking forward to receiving your child on the first day of school, Wednesday, August 17. There is great deal to look forward to this year. Our progressive philosophy, partnered with academic rigor, allows our teachers to foster academic, physical, creative, and social and emotional growth and development. In and out of the classrooms, teachers ignite genuine excitement for learning. Each year we build on best practices and strategic initiatives, while at the same time introducing innovations that bring value to our school. This year the Lower School faculty will continue to deepen its focus on inquiry and problem projectbased learning, expand social justice and equity learning opportunities, enrich our social and emotional curriculum, and integrate technology and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) into student learning. We will also be integrating the new school Core Values of respect, responsibility, integrity, compassion and the pursuit of knowledge. Shorecrest is a learning community that brings together the best practitioners and innovators who are committed to childcentered philosophies of teaching and learning. Joining the Lower School faculty are: Dominique Craft, Dean of Curriculum and Instruction; Natalye Horne, second grade teacher; Colette Husenitza, fourth grade teacher; Khana Rebman, third grade teacher; Miriam Pardoll, Coordinator of the Shorecrest Lower School Learning Center; and, John Schiaparelli, kindergarten instructional assistant. (See new faculty and staff bios below). In addition, we have Lower School colleagues who are embracing new positions; Dianna Tucker will teach second grade, Allison Hawley will teach kindergarten, and Katy Deegan will take on the role of the Education Technologist. Before the start of the school year, we need you to help us get ready for your child’s arrival. It is very important that you fill out all the online forms no later than Wednesday, August 3. Also, the revised Lower School Handbook is available online. Please take the time to read it and share relevant information with your child. After reading the handbook, sign the eform indicating that you have read and agree to follow the school’s policies. You will find the handbook on Parent page of the Shorecrest website. Communication is critical to your child’s success in the classroom. The faculty and I will do our best to communicate with you, and we hope that you will do the same. The first day of each week I will post a letter to update you on school events and the teachers will post a class blog on Haiku. We will often send home hard copies of letters, forms or flyers. Every Friday, you can look forward to reading the school enewsletter, Ebytes. You may access Ebytes any time at www.shorecrestebytes.com or at shorecrest.org > Student Life > Ebytes Newsletter. involvement opportunities and grade level curriculum, expectations and routines at Back to School Night on Thursday, August 25 in the Janet Root Theatre at 7:00pm. In the first week of August you will receive an email from me inviting you to sign up online for a “Listening Conference” with your child’s teacher. The meeting is for you to share information about your child. It is optional, but I hope you will be able to attend. During the same week your child will receive a letter from his or her classroom teacher. Additionally, the Kindergarten Orientation is scheduled for Tuesday, August 16 at 10:00am in the Janet Root Theatre; students should come dressed in their school uniform. The school day for Lower School students is from 8:00am to 2:50pm. Each day begins with a class morning meeting at the start of school, so it is very important that your child arrives before eight so she or he has time to transition into the classroom and begin the day with his/her teacher and friends. The faculty and I are at Charger and Pratt every morning by 7:35am to receive your child. There is morning care available until 7:50am and then the students will be allowed to walk to their classrooms. The year promises to be joyful, as children engage in meaningful, real world learning experiences that lead to lifelong learning. The faculty, staff and I are looking forward to another exciting year of shared learning experiences. We want to make your child’s and your start to the new school year pleasant and easy. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Lower School Office. Warm regards, Lisa Bianco Head of the Lower School Shorecrest Preparatory School

EXTENDED DAY INFORMATION AND RATES Extended Day is designed to provide a safe, nurturing and enjoyable environment for the children who require supervision beyond school hours on a regular basis. Activities will include snack, outdoor play, time for homework, games and crafts. Care is offered from 2:45 pm to 6:00 pm on regular school days and on half days of school ($35, noon-5:30 pm). See the Extended Day Calendar for specific days and times. Vacation child care will be offered on full days when school is closed. Students are expected to behave with the same respect towards others as they would during the academic day. Sending your child means you and your child agree to these policies. Please see the parent/student handbooks for behavioral expectations and consequences. If your child will be attending Extended Day, you must send in an Extended Day Registration form and a payment plan form. All payments should be mailed directly to the Business Office. There are three payment plans for Extended Day on regular school days.

1) Annual Payment– This is your most economical option if your child will be attending Extended Day almost every day. The fee will be billed in three installments on your August, November and February statements. The two yearly options are $2500 (2:50 pm – 6:00 pm) or $1300 (2:50 pm – 4:30 pm or after Club – 6 pm) Annual payment does NOT include half days or vacation child care days when school is not in session.

2) Block Payment Plan –The Block Plan is the best choice for those attending less than 3 days per week or who have inconsistent schedules. 2:45 pm-4:30 pm and 4:15 pm-6:00 pm each constitute one block. If a child stays from 2:45-6:00, it constitutes two blocks; pick up before 4:30 pm or arrival after 4:00 pm constitutes one block. Payment for Block Plan is due at time of purchase. Blocks are available only in groups of 20 ($210) and 40 ($410). Additional blocks must be purchased before your block balance decreases to zero or you will be billed at the daily rate. Please note: Unused blocks will carry over from one year to the next. Blocks CAN NOT be used for half days or vacation child care days when school is not in session.

3) Daily Rate – This is the rate charged if you use Extended Day as your back-up plan in the rare cases you can’t pick your child up as usual or if your block balance goes below zero. Daily Rate charges appear on your next monthly statement. The charge is $16 (2:50 pm – 4:30 pm or after Club – 6 pm) or $32 for 2:50 pm – later than 4:30 pm

Half Days and Vacation Child Care Days are not included in any of the above plans. Care on these days must be reserved in advance by contacting Monica Stypinski. The charge for half days is $35; Vacation child care is $65/day. A schedule for these days is enclosed.

If you will require Extended Day for your child this year on a frequent basis, please fill out and return the registration form and the appropriate payment plan form by August 5. If you are choosing the Block Plan, you must include payment. If you anticipate using Extended Day only an occasional basis at the daily rate, then please inform your child’s teacher of your after school plans on the given day. If you have any questions, please e-mail [email protected] or call Monica Stypinski at 522-2111 ext.173.

REGARDING LATE PICK-UP: Parents will be billed $20 for any portion of every 15 minutes after 6:00 pm until their child is picked up according to the computer clock.
