Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in the Older Adult: Interventions and Recommendations by Elizabeth A Swanson, Toni Tripp- Reimer and Kathleen Buckwalter (eds). Springer Publishing Company, New York, 2000, 270 pages, $48Æ95, ISBN 0 826 11374 5. This is the fourth book in the Springer Series ‘Advances in Gerontological Nursing’. The material in the 13 chap- ters is presented by 15 authors who are mainly nurses. Written and published in the USA, those outside of that country will look hard to find reference to any work from their own country. However, arthritis self-management in Canada and Australia is reviewed. On the whole, the book is very informative but the chapters vary greatly in length and quality and do not follow a standard format. One of the best chapters, possibly due to a wealth of research in this area, considers exercise and older people. Different aspects of exercise are reviewed separately and the results are presented in very easy to read tables. Some other chapters are very short and almost superficial in places but this may reflect a lack of research- based publications on which to base a review. One other chapter of note was on the oral health of older adults. While this reviewer is reluctant to point to particularly poor chapters, the one on falls was poor given the considerable amount of publication in this area including systematic reviews. Perhaps it was the purpose of this book to focus only on USA research but a wider trawl would certainly have turned up more on falls. A useful text, but probably one for the library rather than personal purchase.
