This is the fourth book in the SpringerSeries `Advances in GerontologicalNursing'. The material in the 13 chap-ters is presented by 15 authors who are

mainly nurses. Written and published inthe USA, those outside of that countrywill look hard to ®nd reference to anywork from their own country. However,arthritis self-management in Canadaand Australia is reviewed.

On the whole, the book is veryinformative but the chapters varygreatly in length and quality and donot follow a standard format. One ofthe best chapters, possibly due to awealth of research in this area,considers exercise and older people.Different aspects of exercise arereviewed separately and the resultsare presented in very easy to readtables. Some other chapters are veryshort and almost super®cial in places

but this may re¯ect a lack of research-based publications on which to base areview. One other chapter of note wason the oral health of older adults.While this reviewer is reluctant topoint to particularly poor chapters,the one on falls was poor given theconsiderable amount of publication inthis area including systematic reviews.Perhaps it was the purpose of thisbook to focus only on USA researchbut a wider trawl would certainly haveturned up more on falls. A useful text,but probably one for the library ratherthan personal purchase.
