PHYSICAL WELLNESS
Physical Wellness: a perception and expectation of physical health.
o Exercising regularly
o Eating nutritiously and consciously
o Getting enough sleep and physical rest
o Getting regular physical check-ups
o Avoiding/limiting the use of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco
SPIRITUAL WELLNESS
Spiritual Wellness: a positive perception of meaning and purpose in life.
o Being open to different cultures and religions
o Giving your time to volunteer, participate in community service activities, and/or care for the environment
o Spending time defining personal values and ethics and making decisions that complement them
o Spending time alone in personal reflection and/or in spiritual activities
o Caring about the welfare of others and acting out of that care
SOCIAL WELLNESS Social Wellness: a perception of having support available from family, friends, or co-workers in times of need and a perception of being a valued support provider.
o Being comfortable with and liking yourself as a person
o Contributing time and energy to the community
o Communicating your feelings
o Developing friendships
o Recognizing a need for “fun” time in your life
o Budgeting and balancing your time to include both responsibilities and relaxation
EMOTIONAL WELLNESS Emotional Wellness: possession of a secure self-identity and a positive sense of self-regard; also the ability to cope with and/or improve unpleasant mood states.
o Keeping a positive attitude (in your own way)
o Being sensitive to your feelings and the feelings of others
o Learning ways to effectively cope with stress
o Being realistic about your expectations and time
o Taking responsibility for your own behavior
o Viewing challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles
o Functioning independently but knowing when you need to ask for help
INTELLECTUAL WELLNESS Intellectual Wellness: the perception of being internally energized by an optimal amount of intellectually stimulating activity.
o Learning because you want to – not because you are told to. Doing the work assigned.
o Learning through varied experiences – reading, writing, sharing and exploration
o Listening & observing what is around you
o Finding applications for material learned in the classroom
o Staying current with world affairs/news
o Questioning and thinking critically
o Exposing yourself to new experiences (e.g. arts, theater)
ENVIRONMENTAL WELLNESS
Environmental Wellness: the positive perception of the environment that one works and lives in.
o Being aware of your physical environment – both the spaces you occupy and the people and energies with which you surround yourself
o Being aware of the natural environment you live in
o Recognizing opportunities that lead you to new skillsand acting on those opportunities to ensure the stability and longevity of ournatural resources
FINANCIAL WELLNESS
Financial Wellness: Developing the skills you need to manage your finances responsibly.
o Learning to differentiate between necessities and luxuries
o Living within your means
o Educating yourself on financial literacy and making choices with the full information
o Planning for future financial success; making responsible choices now to support your future plans
o Accessing the resources and skills that allow you to accomplish your goals
WELLNESS OUTLOOK
o You might not be able to fit all desired actions or areas of wellness in to one day!
o So, determine what your timeframe is. . .every day, every few days, each week, each month?
oThat being said. . . .don’t postpone wellness, health, and happiness!
TIPS FOR OPTIMUM WELLNESS & AVOIDING BURNOUT o Take time to plan and assess
o It’s ok to say “no”
o Capitalize on “two birds one stone”-activities when appropriate
o Be proactive to reduce stress
o Recognize the “warning signs” of stress, acknowledge them, and take a moment
o Take deep breathes when you need them and don’t be afraid to use a power pose
o Do not underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep and drinking water!
