Dear Friend:

You care about the families in your church, and so do we. In fact, LifeWay has a ministry team devoted to serving

the families in your church. If families are healthy, churches are healthy. And healthy churches are vessels through

which Christ can accomplish great things.

How can we help homes become all that God created them to be? We don’t have all the answers, but we have

assembled some resources to help your church respond to that question.

Almost everything a church does can help build a strong Christian home life. And for most churches, that doesn’t

mean starting new programs or hiring new staff.

In this folder you will find instructions, tools, and evaluation pieces. These materials are designed to help you see

how the current, ongoing work of your church can be used in an effective strategic plan for families (item 1). This

plan can be discovered through a simple process:

1. Evaluate where you are (item 2)

2. Develop a plan based on your evaluation

3. Communicate to your church (item 3)

4. Make your LifeWay family magazines a strategic resource (item 4)

5. Leverage the content of LifeWay magazines to become a channel for Christian family messages

and helps into the homes on a daily basis (item 5)

As you look through this information and immerse yourself in this process, you may ask, “What do I do next?”

The answer is come back to these simple steps. The first three offer significant actions for all churches. If you use

LifeWay family magazines, then steps 4 and 5 can greatly enhance the value that these magazines contribute to

the ministry of your church.

Thank you for allowing us to partner with you in building strong, healthy families.

Serving together,

5Five Steps to Help Churches Build Homes

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

How do we help our homes be what God created them to be? The information in this folder will help you shape the current ministries and work of your church into a strategic plan to build strong homes. You probably have many of the things you need in place. The challenge is to bring the pieces together into a comprehensive plan. Consider using these simple steps.

1. Evaluate your family ministry efforts.

☞ Bring staff members and/or key lay leaders together and use the evaluation form “Our Ministry to Homes” (item 2).

☞ Fill out the checklist using the first two columns to indicate what you currently do and those things you have plans to begin.

☞ Use the second two columns to rate the effectiveness and awareness level of each action, activity, or ministry.

☞ Discuss the effectiveness of each item you have checked. Where is improvement needed? Are there areas where something new needs to be implemented? Is there anything you should drop?

☞ Discuss the congregation’s awareness of each action and ministry.

2. Develop a plan for ministry to families based on the actions and activities identified during the evaluation process. The evaluation step may reveal that you already have the pieces in place to minister effectively to all age groups and to the family as a unit. If that is the case, then your challenge is to communicate the plan.

However the evaluation may reveal gaps in your plan or ministries that need to be strengthened. For example, many churches need help developing a partnership between the church’s Student Ministry and the parents of teens. A Men’s Ministry that challenges men to be godly leaders in their homes is another area that often needs to be strengthened. Be sure your plan supports a schedule that encourages families to have time together. Having separate age-group program times (preschool, children, student, and adult) is expected and normal. However, look for ways that promote and build families. For example, encourage Adult Sunday school classes or small groups to have regular fellowship activities for the whole family.

3. Communicate a comprehensive strategy.

When you are confident that you have an ongoing plan that can have a positive impact on families, begin to communicate that plan to the congregation. Share the message in a way that tells the story of what you have available and that conveys to the church and community how strong your commitment is to building godly families.

Look at the sample brochure “Meeting the Needs of Families”(item 3). This is a sample of a brochure you can create for your church. A template is available from your church consultant that will allow you to customize and create your own brochure. The template content can be edited, and you can insert your own text, photos, or graphics. Make this brochure the primary print piece that carries your church’s family ministry.

The same information can become content for a family-focused page on your church’s Web site. Regularly update the page with the new events happening in each area of ministry, but keep the focus on your church’s love for family. Include a base page for family that links to the age-group ministry pages for updates. The pastor’s blog also can be an effective way to call attention to these ministries or to special events planned for families.

4. Provide LifeWay magazines as resources for ongoing support for families.

Many churches give LifeWay family magazines to their members as a way to provide ongoing help, encouragement, and information on family issues. Making the magazines available is a way to meet their needs 24/7/365. If you are not currently providing magazines, request samples from your LifeWay consultant. Review “Where Do Magazines Fit and Why Are They Critical?” (item 4) for more information about the use of magazines.

5. Leverage magazine content to produce a continuous flow of strong family messages into your homes.

In addition to providing the magazines, pull selected content from the magazines for use on your Web site or to share through social media outlets or printed newsletters. Consider these examples:

“When we’re hurt or offended it doesn’t take long to find ourselves wanting payment from those who are indebted to us.” See the complete article on dealing with a vengeful spirit in HomeLife, May 2009, pages 16-18. If this speaks to a need in your church, use the quote and add your comments.

”A child does not create problems in marriage; a child reveals them.” “Don’t expect a baby to create a good marriage.” Point to the article on pages 26-27 of the May 2009 issue of HomeLife. Add your own commentary to encourage young parents who are adjusting to life with a new child.

The list of possibilities is endless and extends to senior adults, parents of teens, and more. A quick look at the magazine table of contents will point you to relevant articles. By simply perusing a few pages, you can find quotes and comments that could be used to introduce a blog, fill a tweet, become a Facebook entry, or insert into your bulletin or newsletter. “LifeWay Family Magazine Highlights” (item 5) gives you a quick overview of the content from one quarter of magazine issues.

Item 4: Where Do Magazines Fit

Where Do Magazines Fit and Why Are They Critical?

Don’t begin by thinking about LifeWay magazine titles. Begin by thinking about the people in your pews and their needs along with the needs of your church. You want godly counsel and advice going into the homes in your church.

This information is designed to help you vastly increase the value you get from ordering and distributing family magazines from LifeWay Christian Resources. These family magazines can be the channel for continuous day in and day out helps, encouragement, knowledge and more all in a context of biblical truth.

Your Senior Adults. Who are they, how important are they to your church? Do they need to feel like they are still appreciated? Provide Mature Living and call attention to your seniors through the articles or point your seniors to articles you know will be of interest and help.

Families in Your Church. What would it mean to your ministry and growth if your church were known for being the church in your area that really loved and supported families? Did you know that most HomeLife readers spend at least 30 minutes or more reading the magazine each month and then about half of them pass it on to 2-3 others? If that is happening without any encouragement other than just distributing the magazine what could happen if you started doing a few easy things to call attention to key content?

Parents of Children. The world of parenting from birth through elementary years is often concerned with solving problems and finding answers to things like discipline, feeding, transition years, and much more. Parents today also live with real fears about safety, predators, and online influences. ParentLife not only regularly touches on real questions from real parents, it does so totally in the context of bringing children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Parenting Teens. Have you recently heard this stage of life talked about with fear and trembling? There is no greater challenge than helping teens get through these years into adulthood. Living with Teenagers is all about helping parents have a real partnership with their teens. Parents can see the tough issues they will face be addressed and discussed.

Item 4: Where Do Magazines Fit

Use these suggestions to help your members get maximum value from these magazines:

✓ Calling attention to articles that might be discussed in the home or Sunday School classes for all magazines. An easy way to find suggested articles might be to ask class leaders to review the magazines and make suggestions. Give out the suggestions via your Web site, announcements, or newsletter.

✓ Highlighting a specific article in each magazine each month via your Web site, announcements, or newsletter that touches specific issues you know are of current interest to your families.

✓ Occasionally have a seminar based on a HomeLife or Mature Living article, a workshop for parents based on ParentLife or a parent meeting that discusses something from Living with Teenagers. Perhaps bring in a local expert to lead the discussion.

✓ Provide HomeLife to newlyweds in your church and extend this as an outreach to newlyweds in the community. Let members give you the names and provide the magazine for six months.

✓ Make sure teachers of classes and groups that have children or teens receive ParentLife or Living with Teenagers and encourage them to use the magazine to enrich class discussion.

✓ Place copies of ParentLife in diaper bags at the beginning of each month.

✓ For outreach give copies of ParentLife to parents of non-member children who attend VBS or other special events for children.

✓ Send copies of Living with Teenagers to parents of students entering the student ministry at your church. Include a welcome to the world of teenage parenting.

What Pastors Can Do:

Pastors Can:

✓ Include a family emphasis, minute, comment, in worship time. Find ideas and content from different magazines each week, month, etc.

✓ Ask members to share a testimony about how the church has helped in family situations.

✓ Use your blog to make a family emphasis. Use LifeWay magazines for help with content.

Expand though Social Networking:

All of the suggestions given can be enhanced through Facebook status updates or through tweets on Twitter. Use the Magazine Highlights sheet (item 5) to quickly find articles that might be referenced.

Informal Research FindingsDuring May and June 2008, LifeWay Church Consultants asked this question as they made church visits: “What are the two or three most pressing issues your members are dealing with?”

The top five responses were:

65% Finances, Economy, Gas Prices, Mortgage Crises

50% Family, Family Relationships

27% Time Management (this normally referred to balancing work and home)

26% Discipleship

10% Illness: Alzheimer’s, cancer, depression, aging, emotional issues

Clearly two answers rose to the top of the list. The first was money or finances, including gas prices and the mortgage crises. The second was family and family relationships. The obvious connection became how finances are affecting the home. Overall there seemed to be little doubt that concerns about home and family were a major issue in our churches.

These results led us to follow-up by asking: “What are you doing in your church to minister to families?” These face-to-face conversations were held in over 200 churches in November 2008. The churches range in size from 150 to 5,000 in Sunday School and were spread out from Virginia to California. These 200+ churches mentioned over 60 different things they did. About 10% said they didn’t do anything, but in fact, they did many of the things other churches mentioned. Only a few of the churches saw what they did as a clear strategic plan for ministering to families.

What did we learn from this informal research? We believe that almost everything a church does should be seen as helping build strong families. We do not believe that churches need to start any new programs or hire new staff. This set of materials is designed to give suggestions that can help you see how the ongoing work of your church can be communicated as a highly effective strategic plan for families. You will see helps for using LifeWay family magazines because we believe these resources can be the conduit for carrying your message about how to be a strong, godly family. This folder contains ideas and suggestions. It is shared in the hope that it will help you as you seek to encourage families in a very challenging time.
