Monsoon comes at the beginning of the period of Visarga. Cloudy skies fill the atmosphere with moisture and aridness. The moisture in this season is the biggest factor of the growth of bacteria, mosquitoes and pollution. Following the scientific method of Ayurveda for choosing a healthy diet in Monsoon can bring us wonderful health rewards and contentment with our life.

Atmospheric moisture also affects human body. Our appetite is very week during summer and monsoon drizzles make it worse. During drizzling, gases which coming out from the earth, the acidic level of atmosphere and polluted air also affect our digestive system. Bile problems develop in our body. These problems give rise to dangerous diseases like malaria, elephantiasis, fever, cold, cough, diarrhea, colitis, arthritis, cholera, dysentery, high blood pressure, pimples and body rashes which harm our body.

Light, digestive, fresh foods which stimulate digestive system are good to consume during monsoon. For healthy mind and soul in this season, intake of rice, corns, mustard, cucumber, khichri, curd, butter milk, lentils (moong and arhar) are good and in vegetables, we can take tomatoes, torain, mint chutney, vegetable soup, in fruits, apple, banana, pear, fresh blackberries, fresh ripe mangoes and healthy fried snacks are good. Specially, intake of mangoes and fresh milk is good for health in this season. But mango should be fresh and ripe as raw mangos give negative impact on one’s health. Consumption of mango with milk makes one’s body sturdy. In addition of this, intake of fresh and pulpy blackberries, reduce the chances of skin rashes or redness and making skin soft, supple and immaculate. Buttermilk after corns easily gets digested. To improve your digestive system, take lassi blending with clove, rock salt and parsley in it. Take garlic paste and honey with water; it will be very healthy for your body. To reduce the risk of cough and cold, take tart, acidic and alkali based food. Specially, after heavy shower, when weather get moistened and cold, take myrobalan (harar) with rock salt.

Leafy vegetables, dry and cold stuffs, Bengal gram, urad, potatoes, sorghum, jack-fruit, water chestnut, bitter gourd and sattu with water harm your body in this season; so avoid such foods. According to an age-old adage, avoid milk intake during rainy season, avoid buttermilk during bhadra season, escape bitter gourd during kwaar month and avoid curd during kartik month. “Roaming under scorching sun, too much sleep, excess walking, too much workout are also harmful in this season. Avoid heavy meal and taking food without hunger. Do not take curd and buttermilk during night. Do not moisten your body parts like thigh and genital parts.”

Keeping all healthy measures in our mind, we can relish this drizzling monsoon in a healthy way.
