VIEWPOINTBy Rabbi David Vorspan

We, as Jews, can’t pretend that these coming High Holy Days won’t be different from previous observances. Not with a pandemic intruding upon our thoughts and actions.

But here is what I found to be an interesting relationship between COVID-19 and Rosh Hashanah: Both have global implications.

According to the High Holy Day liturgy, Rosh Hashanah is referred to as “Hayom harat olam - The Birthday of the World.” Our attention as Jews is drawn to this planet and the celebration of its creation. And now, for the first time in my memory, not just Jews but the entire world’s attention is drawn to a single event in this planet’s history and its effects: a pandemic.

All are focused on a virus that threatens lives everywhere. What

Guest Editorial: Rosh Hashanah and COVIDscreams from the headlines in Los Angeles is also the lead story in every newspaper in the world.

And the subject matter is nature. Yes, there are other issues that occupy our thoughts no matter where we live, but not with the singular intensity and

stark horror as a pandemic that is affecting every square mile of earth at the same time!

And so our thoughts and our actions are as one. To survive. And the blessings and curses of our planet are on every person’s mind. Every person.

Which brings us back to Rosh Hashanah. This is a holiday when

Jews, as one, dwell not on the unthinkable, but on the pleasant thoughts of an earth that provides us with blessings, and compel us to consider how we can be a blessing in our relationship to the planet and to each other.

Our prayers are directed not only to God but to ourselves - to the Godliness that we can all manifest. As people are infected negatively by a virus, we can also affect others positively through our acts of loving kindness.

The world’s attention may be on how to respond to catastrophe, but Rosh Hashanah encourages Jews to dwell on the goodness of our lives, the preciousness of life, and the thankfulness we have that earth’s blessings can be harnessed for good.

Rabbi Vorspan is with Congregation Shir Ami, a conservative congregation in the west valley.

Just as people are infected negatively by a virus, we can also affect others positively through our acts of loving kindness.

Did he really just say that here?

Two commentators in last week’s editorials focused on the homeless issues. But it was two incidents this month which highlight a bigger problem: The homeless are not the only ones who believe they are above the parameters, the law, protecting a civilized community.

Mr. Blumenfeld utilized 800 words to explain why there are still homeless camps at Target; but the last paragraph gives him an out when nothing is done: “We now have a constitutional law that will encourage unhoused folks to take available beds and help us clean up many of our critical corridors,” and “it will still take some time to see progress,” and “The L.A. Alliance vs City of Los Angeles lawsuit is also still pending.”

Focus in on these words designed to provide an illusion of accomplishment: encourage (not mandate), take some time (no parameter), still pending (someone else is in control).

Meanwhile, Mr. Zine’s 900-word rant included this observation: “a person can park a stolen shopping cart containing various items often stolen while shoplifting in local stores” and the profound declaration about the lopsided representation in Sacramento - “We the people from all parties live with the results - good or bad.”

However, an article in the 9/26/20 edition of this paper, almost a year ago, had a different headline… but the same content: a promise wrapped in an excuse. Mr. Blumenfield did not show up to the community meeting, but the journalist was able to

Letter to the Editor: Did He Really Just Say That?garner a promise from his office: “Councilman Bob Blumenfield has set the date of November 16 to remove all homeless encampments from the Winnetka and Corbin underpasses of the freeway.” Update: While they are gone from the Winnetka underpass, Corbin is an unchanged stronghold.

“Blumenfield’s deputy Keith Banks was at the meeting and

said, “We are really trying to do something within the limits put there by red tape, judges, federal and state law and restrictions on mental health. Give us time, be patient, and let’s see if this works.”

“The problem here at Winnetka is that they have Ralph’s where they can steal food and use their EBT card, Starbucks where they use the bathroom and a recycling center so they can get money. If you clear them from the underpass, they’ll just move into the neighborhood like the one living in his car did.”

The irony occurred at this same Ralphs, on August 9, the

first day of school for students across the street at Taft High School. It was barely 3:30 pm, the store was overrun by students in their new clothes, their cars filled the parking lot, and security was tensely observing customers. But it was a remark I overheard which floored me, there had been seven incidents of theft within the hour. No, not by the homeless, but students!

The second incident occurred at the “Valley Fest,” an event which organizers and vendors had undoubtedly spent endless hours and expense in anticipation of showcasing local small businesses. So, in what capacity did Bob Blumenfield have a right to say, as he held the scissors to cut the ribbon opening the event, “these scissors are sharp they could cut a hedge or your head off.”

While it is easy to throw words about the homeless – the reality is sec 49.84.1 of the City Code highlights the necessity to address graffiti because it leads to violence – perhaps the Council should address the fact one of their own has marred the West Valley and likewise the Principal of Taft High School should apologize to the community and employees of Ralphs

MoceanLab, a future-focused mobility laboratory for Los Angeles, formally launched its Mocean Carshare service in Warner Center this week, expanding the reach of its growing car sharing service to the San Fernando Valley for the first time.

Mocean Carshare provides drivers with quick and convenient access to hybrid-electric vehicles for up to three days, at a price comparable to renting an electric scooter. With the touch of a button, the app-based service allows drivers to rent the low-emission vehicles by the minute, hour, or day, providing a much-needed alternative to the privately owned vehicles that contribute to clogged streets, polluted air, and reduced quality of life.

A variety of local and citywide leaders gathered on Thursday to celebrate the launch of the service at Westfield Topanga & The Village.

“We are thrilled to introduce Mocean Carshare to another vibrant area of L.A. and advance

our vision of mobility innovation that benefits Angelenos far and wide,” said Dave Gallon, MoceanLab’s Chief Operating Officer. “Expanding this service to the San Fernando Valley is an exciting step toward ensuring even more Angelenos have access to a safe, sustainable and equitable mobility option that can complement public transit while helping to reduce congestion in the street and at the curb.”

Warner Center represents a key testing ground for L.A.’s mobility advancements. With support from L.A. City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, the area last November was designated the city’s first Transportation Technology Innovation Zone to test new mobility solutions.

“We are proud to welcome Mocean Carshare to Warner Center’s Transportation Technology Innovation Zone, advancing our work to provide more sustainable, reliable, affordable mobility options for Angelenos,” Councilmember

Councilman Bob Blumenfield and Mocean founder Dave Gallon.

Mocean Car Share Rolls Into Warner Center Blumenfield said. “With Mocean we have another tool to address the first/last mile public transit challenge while helping reduce traffic, lessen the need for car ownership, and limit the competition for scarce parking spaces.”

Mocean Carshare’s Hyundai loniq and Kia Niro vehicles will be available to eligible drivers in several strategic areas within Warner Center, east of Topanga Canyon and north of Ventura Boulevard. Westfield Topanga & The Village has reserved two parking spaces expressly for Mocean Carshare vehicles. “Westfield welcomes new advances in transportation services to better serve our guests and neighbors,” said General Manager Brian Parent. “We look forward to seeing Mocean Carshare flourish here in Warner Center, especially as we move through the pandemic and see even more people enjoy shopping, dining and gathering with friends and loved ones.”

By Robert “Goody” GoodmanIf you own a small business, one of the best team members you

can have is your banker. Your banker can be a very big asset to your company. The right bank can make or break you, and not just from a day-to-day deposit/withdrawal scenario.

If you are banking with a big institution and you’re not a big company - doing a million plus in sales, you’re in the wrong place. You need a partner that knows you personally, and will be with you through thick or thin. When the economy goes south, big banks can shut off your line of credit or letters of credit - both of which you need to expand your business. If you are just an account number and not a name to your bank, get out. Choose a smaller institution or credit union.

Your banking institution should help you set up your financial needs - and listen to your goals.

Smaller banks and institutions also tend to be more involved in their community as well. They should be able to refer other customers to you, as well help you with better rates and fees.

Look to a smaller bank with more personal service. You should be getting more out of your bank than dollars and cents.

Hamilton Hits the Sweet Spot inWelcoming Back Live Entertainment

Jamael Westman and Carvens Lissaint in Hamilton at Pantages.

By John BeresiLive entertainment is quickly

making its way back into the fold, and what better way to return to in-person theatre productions than with the kick-off of Hamilton at the Pantages?!

For those that fell in love with the production on Disney+ during quarantine, this is the chance to see it live, our founding fathers in full force eloquently rapping about our nation’s history. Not only is the energy palpable from the stage, the buzz within the theatre exudes the excitement that theatre goers have upon being able to return to this historic venue. After all, there’s nothing quite like seeing a full production in person as the lights fade and the curtain opens...

Transporting each audience member to 1776, Hamilton has been praised far and wide for Lin Manuel Miranda’s ingenious iteration of the history of America itself. Told through a mixture of rap, hip hop and traditional style show tunes, it’s quite simply a production that has never been done before and has racked up enough awards to solidify its genius originality. With an extended run at the Pantages, more audiences will

now have a chance to experience the phenomenon first hand, directly from stage to seat.

Tickets for Hamilton are now on sale for all productions through January 2, 2022. Due to extreme popularity, there is a maximum purchase of eight tickets per household, with tickets ranging from $55 to $195.

Hamilton has also brought back a lottery system with tickets for just $10! Digital lotteries will begin each Friday and close the following Thursday for the following week’s performances.

Tickets may be purchased at BroadwayInHollywood.com/HamiltonLA and www.Ticketmaster.com, by phone at (800) 982-2787, or at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre box office. Lottery tickets can be sought after through the official Hamilton app or by going to hamiltonmusical.com/lottery to register.

There’s nothing quite like seeing a full production in person as the lights fade and the curtain opens.

West Valley Playhouse Presents Born Yesterday on Stage

When Billie’s ignorance becomes a liability to Brock’s business dealings, he hires a journalist, Paul Verrall, to educate his girlfriend. In the process of learning, Billie Dawn realizes how corrupt Harry is and begins interfering with his plans to bribe a Congressman into passing legislation that would allow Brock’s business to make more money.

The cast of Born Yesterday includes Gabriella Gonzalez Biziou, Alan Waserman, Mark Youngs, Daniel Krause, Robert Reeves, Ken Solo, Esther Rosen, Marla Miller, McKenna Willis, Paula K. Long and Michael Jay Arnonovitz. The play is directed by Jon Berry.

Esthetic Professional Dental Center: The Best Kept Secret in L.A.Esthetic Professionals (EP) is

located on Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana California.

It was a dream come true for Dr. Bruce J. Crispin. He is recognized nationally and internationally as an outstanding dentist and teacher. In his 23 years as a professor, he started the “UCLA Center for Esthetic Dentistry” a first for universities in the 80’s. In 1997, with his wife of 54 years Vicky, they started EP.

Esthetic Professionals is a one-of-a-kind multi-faceted facility. They have a “Dental Education Center” where they train dentists on the latest and greatest techniques and materials. In their education programs,

they are one of the rare post- graduate centers that actually treat patients. Patients in turn can take advantage of the latest materials, technology and receive

treatment from licensed dentists at significantly reduced rates.

Esthetic Professionals also has a “Dental Laboratory” specializing in fabricating esthetic restorations. In addition, EP has a “Distribution Center”, started

by Bruce’s son Chad, selling the latest dental technologies and contemporary dental materials.

All the dental restorations and materials EP provide are thoroughly tested in the private dental practices of Drs. Bruce and Kristi Crispin (Bruce’s daughter).

Esthetic Professionals is on the cutting edge of almost every area of esthetic restorative dentistry. This translates to optimal treatment for both our private patients and education patients.

Crispin feels that EP is “The Total Dental Solution.” Call for a free “Meet and Greet” to see for yourself. 818-654-7100 (estheticprofessionals.com).

By Janey M. RifkinWhile both public and

private school systems finally opened their doors for classroom instruction last month, multiple problems began to unfold.

Shutting down schools will prove to have been among the

Primary grades faced no exception. Remote learning was as satisfactory as the particular parents who were involved assuming teacher-student status. The McKinsey report indicated that the kindergarten grade, geared for five-year-olds,

most destructive policies of the pandemic. Unfortunately for all age children, whether in grammar, junior high, or high school grade levels, lost learning has been pervasive.

A report by McKinsey & Co. quantifies the harm. The consulting firm examined spring 2021 test results for 1.6 million students in grades one through six across the U.S. and then compared their performance with that of similar students pre-pandemic. They discovered that the pandemic-era children were, on average, about four months behind in reading and five months behind in math.

was sadly eliminated in many school districts. Kindergarten is considered especially valuable as it introduces the school atmosphere and regimen for all entering, especially five-year-olds that have not had pre-school experience.

There will be instances, primarily for middle or secondary and high school classes, where students who took interim assessments in the spring in a school building will show less disruption this month as official school commences.

McKinsey notes that students who move on to the next grade unprepared are missing key

building blocks of knowledge that are necessary for success. Without immediate and sustained intervention, “students who repeat a year are much less likely to complete high school

and attend college.” The report predicts the lost learning could slash lifetime earnings by $49,000 to $61,000 on average.

The damage cost of a disrupted education will be felt

by millions of young men and women nationwide, reported McKinsey and Co.

REAL ESTATE Homeowners Want No Church Expansion of Food PantryBy Alex Farassati

Prince of Peace Church held a community meeting on August 28, 2021 at 10 am. Pastor Ran Resoner shared images and plans for the development and expansion of the church located at 5700 Rudnick Ave., Woodland Hills.

According to Resoner, the expansion will include a 7,500 -square-foot, two-story building with a commercial kitchen, multiple offices, showers, and a commercial size food storage room. The new building will have residential housing on two sides. The church is also located across from a pre-school/elementary school and close to a city park where many kids’ games are held.

The church was built in 1959, and they began operating a food pantry from within the church in 1975 using the limited space they had available. The operation of the food pantry has expanded over the years.

In order to serve their customers, they have had to place multiple storage containers within the parking lot and build permanent sheds. This has reduced the number of parking spaces within the church under the minimum requirement. Currently many of the minimum

required parking spaces for the church users have been taken away and replaced by permanent or temporary structures, not to mention blocking of the federally mandated and ADA path of travel.

Over 11,000 people use the food pantry every month. This creates traffic and parking issues which disturb neighbors. It is not clear whether the food pantry was properly permitted to operate on this property within a single family zone and requires the examination of city records.

On August 9, 2021, Valley News Group reported that the church received a $3.5 million donation from Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel to expand the food pantry facilities. Per the pastor, the West Valley Food Pantry is

a ministry of the Church. The land where the future facility will be built is deeded to the Episcopal Church in Los Angeles.

There’s no subdivision of the lot deeding a portion of the land to the food pantry. The earmarking of taxpayer money by Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, to a religious organization is a violation of federal and state constitutions requiring separation of church and state.

Over 40 local residents attended the meeting on Saturday, August 28th and expressed their fierce opposition to the church

By Neill Simmons The highlight of September

is to see the swiftest planet, Mercury, on Thursday, the 13th. Look west 30 minutes after sunset to spot the brightest planet Venus. Then look below Venus for a small, bright point of light which is Mercury. Mercury is the fastest planet in our solar system moving at over 107,000 mph!

The dazzling planet Venus is a beacon every night low in the west. Make sure to look on the 9th of September when the beautiful crescent Moon is close by, and the two together make a fantastic sight!

The two giant gas planets, Saturn and Jupiter, are putting on a good show in the southeast after dark.

If you have a telescope, the rings of Saturn are visible and quite a sight! As Saturn moves west during the night, Jupiter is close behind. Jupiter is so bright now that your eyes will easily

be drawn to the king of planets. Mark Saturday, the 18th, on your calendar as a the Moon and Jupiter will appear to be close to each other.

Also on the 18th, the famous “Fall Harvest Moon” rises in all its glory after sunset. The shorter-than-usual lag time between moonrises around the full Harvest Moon means no long period of darkness between sunset and moonrise for days in succession.

In the days before tractor

and Scorpius. If you have binoculars or a telescope, scan this area and you can see over 10 star clusters. To see all this with the naked eye, try to get to a dark area with minimal light pollution.

FUN FACT: There is a “Black Hole” near the center of our Milky Way galaxy which is four million times bigger than our Sun.

September is also a great time to sit outside and spot satellites coming over us. One should appear about every five minutes. There are over 40,000 satellites orbiting the Earth. Many of them are no longer used and are considered “space junk.”

If you like to see meteors, sit outside

on the 8th or 9th, where a few might be spotted. Meteors are space rocks that enter the Earth’s atmosphere resulting in friction appearing as a streak of light. Meteors range in size from small grains to meter-wide objects.

Vandenberg is planning to launch three rockets in September. Times of the launches have yet to be announced. Follow Nighttrek on Facebook for updates on Vandenberg and more star gazing.

When not star gazing, Neill Simmons is a Wealth Manager with LPL Financial in Woodland Hills. If you have any astronomy or financial questions, he may be reached at (818) 936-2626 or at: neill.simmons @lpl.com.

lights, the lamp of the Harvest Moon helped farmers to gather their crops, despite the diminishing daylight hours. As the Sun’s light faded in the west, the Moon would soon rise in the east to illuminate the fields throughout the night. Hence, the Harvest Moon name!

Every night in September go outside and look straight up. Behold the giant “Summer Triangle.” The Summer Triangle is actually made by three stars - Altair, Deneb, and Vega - from three different constellations - Aquila, Cygnus, and Lyra - respectively.

All of September is the best time to see the “Galactic Center” of our “Milky Way” galaxy. This center point is between the Zodiac constellations Sagittarius

expansion. According to several participants, the neighborhood is already flooded with homeless people, mentally ill transients, drug addicts and criminals taking advantage of the free mobile shower in the Church and collecting free food. Lines of cars waiting to enter the drive-through food pantry back up over half a mile around the corner to Miranda Avenue, often blocking driveways.

According to many neighbors, this situation (that was supposed to be temporary due to the pandemic) will become permanent if the new 7,500-square-foot building with a commercial kitchen and industrial size storage facility is built on the church property. According to other concerned neighbors, delivery trucks and lines of cars will create unbearable noise and air pollution in this quiet family neighborhood.

Many attendees have supported the food pantry and some have volunteered to help the food distribution. However, they believe that the operation has outgrown the neighborhood and is better suited in a commercial or industrial zone closer to a bus stop. Pastor Reasoner indicated that several other food pantries in the San Fernando Valley have closed since the pandemic started and, therefore, many more people rely on this facility for food assistance.

Some participants have searched the area and have found decent-sized warehouses with available kitchens in commercial zones that can be purchased for this purpose. Some offered financial assistance if this approach is taken. However, the pastor insisted that the new building is needed in the church property because it will serve “a nice number of functions for the church.” The new kitchen is planned to be built next to a community room that is rented for weddings and other social events for a fee.

One neighbor said: “We already have huge lines for the food pantry on weekdays making it difficult to drive into or out of our neighborhood.” Traffic and parking problems will increase with a larger facility with larger demand.”

Another neighbor told the pastor about her experience of walking in the neighborhood, near the congregated homeless encampment around the Church, getting rocks thrown at her. Another resident complained about drug needles in front of the pre-school that her daughter is enrolled in. Many other sad stories were told about the negative impact of having the current food pantry in this neighborhood, and how much worse it will likely get if the new building is approved.

The heated debate ended with the opposition, the neighbors, gathering outside the chapel getting petitions signed, exchanging e-mails and planning to mobilize the larger community to speak up against the church expansion with public funds. The group is planning to hire a land use /real-estate attorney to fight this project, will take actions to freeze public funds in Sacramento that is earmarked to go to a religious organization and elaborated on environmental and traffic impacts of such a facility.

The neighbors have agreed on a common goal: “Due to the negative impacts of the West Valley Food Pantry on the quality of life in our neighborhood, our goal is to have them move to an appropriate location for a facility of this type and size.”

Neighbors fully support the West Valley Food Pantry as long as the operations is moved from this single-family residential neighborhood to a commercial/industrial zone.
