Bonfils Blood Center exists because of your generosity. Ongoing support from our community through blood donation, blood drive coordination, marrow/stem cell donation and awareness efforts, financial contributions and hospital partner collaboration made these and many other notable accomplishments possible in 2011.

We estimate that as many as 437,000 patients needing blood transfusions benefitted last year thanks to the community’s support of our mission. More than half of the blood Bonfils collects is donated through our mobile blood drive program. Our partnerships with nearly 1,000 businesses, civic groups and faith-based organizations enable us to reach donors throughout the state. More than 145,000 blood donations were collected at Bonfils’ community donor centers and at more than 2,200 blood drives last year. Additionally, our Colorado Marrow Donor Program added 3,600 new potential marrow/stem cell donors to the Be The Match Registry® and raised $71,000 in financial contributions to support future recruitment efforts.

Bonfils hosts many events and promotions each year to increase awareness about the need for blood donations in our community. The need for blood is constant, so these programs offer Bonfils the opportunity to recognize our existing blood donors and reach out to new people, encouraging them to make their first lifesaving blood donation.

[ Winter’s Time to Celebrate Life ]

Nearly 13,000 blood donors made a resolution to save lives, including more than 1,200 first-time donors in celebration of National Blood Donor Month in January.

[ Community Lifelines ]

In November, more than 60 blood donors attended the 13th annual Community Lifelines event to meet Dallas Armstrong whose life was saved by their donations. Armstrong was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder in 2010 and received nearly 650 units of blood during a four month stay at Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette.

[ Donate Life Month ]

Bonfils’ Colorado Marrow Donor Program (CMDP) partnered with CBS4 to promote Donate Life Month in April which exists to raise awareness of the need for blood, marrow/stem cell, organ, eye and tissue donations and financial contributions. The month culminated with a special Day4Life event that added more than 100 potential donors to the Be The Match Registry®.

[ Drive for Life XIV ]

Our annual Drive for Life blood drive in partnership with the Denver Broncos attracted 1,500 fans and lifesavers in October.• More than 1,200 units collected• More than 3,600 lives saved• 350 new donors attended the event• More than 30 active players, alumni

and cheerleaders participated

[ High School Heroes ]

Bishop Machebeuf, Fairview and Platte Canyon high schools were each recognized in early September for recruiting the most first-time donors

through our High School Heroes blood drive program.

[ It takes more than blood to save a life ]

For nearly 70 years, Bonfils Blood Center has successfully managed the community blood supply and played an integral role in Colorado’s healthcare system. Yet, achieving Bonfils’ mission of saving and enhancing lives requires assistance from blood donors and financial benefactors. Bonfils Blood Center Foundation’s contributions are secured through grant awards, corporate gifts, planned giving activities and targeted fundraising events. From the smallest gifts to the largest bequest to date of $1 million, the foundation and its supporters help grow and sustain the programs and services of Bonfils Blood Center.

• In April, nearly 200 community members attended the annual Because Life Happens breakfast while another 100 participated in the Chip in for Life golf outing in August to support the blood center.

• On Dec. 6, the foundation received 35 gifts totaling more than $5,600 from the second annual Colorado Gives Day campaign.

[ Military Support ]

Bonfils stood at the ready to support the U.S. military’s blood needs with a shipment in June. Bonfils remains one of eight community blood centers in the U.S. to provide blood products to the military when called upon.

[ Stop and Give ]

The community turned out to support Laurie Sherlock, whose unborn child was killed in a still unsolved hit-and-run tragedy in Denver’s Stapleton neighborhood. More than 1,700 people donated blood with Bonfils during the first annual Stop and Give campaign from Nov. 27 through Dec.10 to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation and safe driving.

[ Three Decades of Saving Lives ]

Eight blood drive hosts including high schools, churches and corporations were honored throughout the year with 30 Years of Saving Lives awards for hosting blood drives.

[ Tis the Season to Give ]

Santa Claus stopped by in December to give his annual holiday blood donation to help kick off our annual winter donation campaign.

HEROISM THROUGHFive lifelong donors reached donation milestones in 2011—four of whom

achieved 60-gallons and one donor commemorated his 65-gallon donation.

Bonfils’ Community Donor

Center Manager Myron Johnson

Bonfils’ Denver West Donor Center staff join in

Medina’s celebration

DENNY DALPEZ: 60-GALLONS“It’s a good community service and I know that it will go to somebody who needs it.” – Denny Dalpez

Golden resident Dennis “Denny” Dalpez celebrated his 60-gallon achievement in high spirits with the Denver West Community Donor Center staff in October. Now a platelet donor, Dalpez’s began donating blood in Milwaukee in the 1970s. He continued donating whole blood after moving to Colorado but made the switch to platelet donations in 1991. We hope others will adopt Dalpez’s sentiments about blood donation in the New Year by making a resolution to save lives.

STEVE MEDINA: 60-GALLONS“There was an Army camp a few miles north of where I lived. The soldiers there needed blood and I wanted to do all I could to help. I’ve been donating ever since.” – Steve Medina

In September, 85-year-old Steve Medina became the first donor in Bonfils history to reach the 50-gallon milestone by exclusively giving whole blood. Whole blood donations can be given every 56 days or six times per year. Having rarely missed a donation interval, it’s been a 68-year marathon for Medina and he’s not about to stop now.

WILLIAM BURNHAM: 65-GALLONS

In July, Bonfils saluted retired U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant and veteran blood donor Bill Burnham for his 65-gallon donation, officially ranking him as the fourth donor in the center’s history to reach this mark. Burnham faithfully gave whole blood for years until he became a platelet donor in 1992, which enabled him to donate more frequently. Platelet donations allow Bonfils to tailor the community blood supply and more precisely meet patients’ needs.

Page 5: Heartbeat Winter 2012

LARRY CLOOS: 60-GALLONS“Knowing that what I’m doing is saving a life, it’s the most powerful thing in the world. The biggest gift you can give someone is time. Time with their family and friends, time to do what they love and that’s what you do when you donate blood, you give people more time.” – Larry Cloos

A 30-year supporter, blood and marrow donor and Bonfils board member, Larry Cloos joined the ranks of only eight other Bonfils Blood Center donors in November by hitting the 60-gallon donation milestone. A fifth generation Colorado native, Cloos began donating in 1981 and credits his father for introducing him to this way of giving back to his community.

Additionally, he’s registered on the national Be The Match Registry®, donating stem cell/bone marrow on three separate occasions to patients suffering from blood-related diseases like leukemia. Cloos has also been on the Bonfils Operating Board of Trustees for one and a half years to provide additional support and guidance to an organization and cause that he is very passionate about.

BRUCE TRAUTMANN: 60-GALLONS“Although commonalities exist among disasters, it is the individual that I think about most often. Each one has suffered a loss of some type and that person could be me at some point in time.” – Bruce Trautmann

Sixty-six-year-old Bruce Trautmann became Bonfils’ seventh donor to hit the 60-gallon milestone. Trautmann moved to Colorado in the mid-1970s and began giving blood with Bonfils. He became a platelet donor in 1993 allowing him to donate every two weeks in support of patients like those undergoing cancer therapies, open heart surgeries and other medical treatments. Trautmann’s heroism

stretches far beyond a more than 40-year blood donation career. Upon retirement from both serving in the military and in civilian government, Trautmann sought to continue benefitting the community and helping those in need. He volunteers his time to contribute to disaster relief work performed across the U.S. and its territories. Earlier in the year he spent six weeks in Tennessee helping to rebuild the homes and lives of tornado victims. Trautmann was also heavily involved in the disaster relief efforts after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and in 2007, devoted a month of his time to aiding the families affected by wildfires in southern California.

Heart-to-Heart Giving Give someone a reason to smile.

Did you know that every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. requires a blood transfusion? Blood donors save lives, but don’t forget about becoming a potential marrow or stem cell donor. Each year more than 10,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with diseases like leukemia for which a marrow or stem cell transplant could be a cure. Joining the Be The Match Registry® through Bonfils’ Colorado Marrow Donor Program is fast, easy and painless. Saving lives doesn’t stop there. Did you know that over 110,000 people are waiting for an organ, eye and tissue donation? Say “YES” to the gift of life by registering to become an organ, eye and tissue donor at donatelifecolorado.org.

Financial contributions to Bonfils Blood Center’s Foundation are also appreciated and critical for supporting the blood center’s programs and initiatives. Visit www.bonfils.org to learn more about these donation opportunities.

February 14th not only represents Valentine’s Day,

it’s also National Donor Day.

Thank you and congratulations to the following organizations and communities that will celebrate 30 and 40 years of saving lives in 2012 through hosting blood drives with Bonfils Blood Center. Together their efforts have improved and enhanced the lives of thousands of patients in our community and beyond.

Puckett’s Perspective – In Gratitude

As I reflect back on my 20 years with Bonfils Blood Center, I feel a tremendous

sense of pride. This feeling of pride is not however because of personal

accomplishments, it is because I have been a part of a partnership with you—

our blood and marrow donors, financial contributors, healthcare and media

partners and other volunteers—that has resulted in the creation of one of

Colorado’s most valuable resources—a readily available community blood

supply and excellence in transfusion medicine services benefitting countless

patients in this state and beyond.

Through the years, I have seen tens of thousands of units of blood being collected,

packed into boxes and shipped to places needing disaster assistance like New

York after 9/11, the Gulf Coast region after hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Haiti

following the devastating earthquake, the U.S. military to provide for our troops,

not to mention the day-to-day blood product support given to our local hospitals

and their patients.

I have also seen tens of thousands of individuals selflessly support Bonfils

Blood Center including people who show up with blue and orange painted faces to

give blood every year at Drive for Life, a young woman from Aurora who donated

her bone marrow to save the life of a Cleveland boy who was a stranger fighting

leukemia, a 50-gallon blood donor who included Bonfils in her will because she

understands that financial contributions to the blood center help ensure that

our lifesaving work will go on and two passionate teenagers who testified in the

Colorado legislature to ensure the successful passage of a bill to lower the blood

donor age from 17 to 16.

The list goes on and on.

Bonfils Blood Center will soon have a new CEO and President and although the

leader will change, the dedication to our social responsibility and the essence

of what this blood center stands for won’t. Bonfils’ Operating and Foundation

Boards of Trustees, Senior Management team and employees are committed

to continuing to guide this organization in meeting the needs of our donors,

healthcare partners and community supporters.

Additionally, I am as confident now as I always have been that the compassion

that each of you shows when you give blood, marrow or monetary donations

or volunteer to promote the importance of our programs and services will help

ensure the success of this organization for another 70 years. I leave Bonfils

Blood Center as its CEO and President and I take with me sincere appreciation

for the opportunities that I have been given to partner with you—the Colorado

community—to make a difference in the lives of so many.

Respectfully,

Tom Puckett

In summer 2010, Bonfils Blood Center embarked on an exciting role to support prostate cancer patients through a partnership with a Seattle-based pharmaceutical company, Dendreon which created a “vaccine” called Provenge® to help treat advanced stages of

the cancer. Bonfils is among the first centers in the nation to participate in this medical treatment whereby a patient’s own white blood cells are collected and later mixed with a drug designed to target prostate cancer cells and then re-infused into each patient’s own treated blood. To date, Bonfils has assisted in the treatment of nearly 60 patients, like James Mester, who have undergone this therapy in an effort to battle their cancer.

For more information about Provenge®, please contact Bonfils’ Donor Relations department at 303.363.2202 or 800.365.0006 opt. 1 or visit http://www.dendreon.com/products/provenge/.

The Gift of Time: Living Life to the Fullest

James Mester is a Golden, Colo. native who continues to live life to its fullest with his latest rendezvous being a trip to Italy with his wife, Johnnie, of 65 years. Mester served in the U.S. Navy from June 1942 – Dec. 1945 where he was assigned to Ford Island in Pearl Harbor in Oct. 1942, then Kaneohe Bay Naval Air Station for two years and Johnston Island for a year. He returned home to Golden where he worked for

the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years as a postmaster in Evergreen, Colo. James and Johnnie have enjoyed their retirement together traveling and spending time with their two children, six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He is also an advocate for prostate cancer awareness, prevention and treatment.

Thanks to the following companies and organizations for being an important part of our lifesaving mission. Collectively, their blood drives (July – October 2011) generated nearly 48,000 units of donated blood for our community blood supply. Their generosity and support is appreciated by hundreds of patients every day. Bonfils Blood Center regularly uses 97 percent of donated blood. When you give blood you can be assured it’s needed and used efficiently.
