RESPECT · OPPORTUNITY · ACHIEVEMENT HEBER HIGHLIGHTS March 2019 www.bishopheber.cheshire.sch.uk Issue 97 Headteacher’s Editorial: As usual, the Spring Term is the shortest of the three terms within the academic year and made shorter by a week this year due to the Spring Break falling before the traditional Easter Holiday. That said, returning to school in mid-April for the start of the Summer Term does provide us with a much better run-in to support those students taking public examinations this summer. So, with such a short five week half term, you’d be forgiven for thinking that not much has happened at Heber since the previous Heber Highlights in February – quite the contrary! The Heber’s been abuzz with great events since our return. It was fabulous to welcome back after the half term break the Netballers from their very successful Barbados Sports Tour, as well as the sixth form physicists who returned ‘charged’ from their visit to CERN (Switzerland). The CCF Royal Navy section has got off to a flying start at Heber since its official opening at the start of the academic year. In fact, both the CCF and 617 Heber ATC squadron have developed equally over the past eight months with more students joining each service. This was reflected in their first joint visit to RAF Mahram to see the new F35 Lightning II aircraft. As I have stated in many earlier editions of the Heber Highlights we are indeed very fortunate to have such a supportive and committed staff and student body. In one week alone in March we had the inaugural Science Fair with over 100 participants from Year 3 to Year 8, followed by the annual Performing Arts ‘Heber Footlights’ concert with almost three hours of high quality performances showcasing the talent we have at Heber across dance, drama and music. This was then rounded off with the bi-annual Careers Convention with over 100 exhibitors from across many sectors kindly providing their time and expertise to offer invaluable information, advice and guidance to our students and their families. I would like to thank Carden Park once again for sponsoring the event this year. The Spring Term is also busiest for Parents’ Evenings with five of the seven in this term alone. The support we get from our families is extraordinary and plays a large part in our students’ success both inside and outside the classroom. Whilst your feedback has been enormously positive, it has also provided us with an important insight into what we could better at Heber to support you further. We will look to develop these in the coming weeks and months. Following the annual Governors Day in School each October and the Governors Seminar at Carden Park each March, the student and parental feedback forms an important part of the evaluation cycle. Actions to address these issues are discussed at the summer term gathering of the Governing Body looking ahead to planning for 2019/20. We say goodbye to two colleagues this term. Miss Cullen (2017 to 2019) joined Bishop Heber High School almost two years ago as a part-time Teacher of Spanish and French from Tarporley High School where she had completed her NQT. Miss Cullen completed her BA Hons degree in French and Hispanic Studies at the University of Liverpool, followed by a PGCE in Spanish with French at Liverpool Hope University. Whilst at the Heber, Miss Cullen has also been a Year 7 Form Tutor and will be sorely missed by students and staff alike. Mrs Hatton-Jones (2002 to 2019) joined Bishop Heber High School over 18 years ago from Chester College where she was a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education. Prior to that Mrs Hatton-Jones had been the Head of Mathematics at Ysgol Bryn Alyn. During her time at Heber she has been a teacher of mathematics, an Assistant Year Leader and Year Leader. Her knowledge of students and her pastoral care has been greatly appreciated by so many students over the years. Her dedication to the students has not gone unnoticed and her unique style, personality and approachability will be missed enormously. We all wish Mrs Hatton-Jones the very best in her return to full-time teaching of maths. Headteacher’s Editorial: As usual, the Spring Term is the shortest of the three terms within the academic year and made shorter by a week this year due to the Spring Break falling before the traditional Easter Holiday.

In fact, both the CCF and 617 Heber ATC squadron have developed equally over the past eight months with more students

joining each service. This was reflected in their first joint visit to RAF Mahram to see the new F35 Lightning II aircraft.

As I have stated in many earlier editions of the Heber Highlights we are indeed very fortunate to have such a supportive and committed staff and student body. TripsConCERNing Physics

An experience of a life time presented itself to 26 Sixth Form students to travel to Geneva and visit the famous CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire) facilities from February 19th to February 21st 2019.

Home of the Large Hadron Collider, students experienced the LHC control centre, the cryogenic testing facilities, and the LHC (ATLAS) control centre. Along with visiting the microcosms and particle exhibitions,

students attended a one hour lecture from one of the engineers on site which enriched students’ understanding of the field of particle physics.

The students, in three groups accompanied by Mr Taylor, Mr Roberts, and Mrs Cooke additionally spent time exploring Geneva, visiting the United Nations, and seeing how chocolate was made at the Favarger chocolate factory.

Overall, it was a truly successful trip thoroughly enjoyed by students which reinforced the understanding of key concepts on the Physics A-level course while supplementing cross curricular elements such as team work during the orienteering exercise and learning about the history of the UN and how Swiss chocolate was made.

Artists in Residence Year 10 Art students enjoyed an intensive weekend at the Conway Centre in Anglesey in early March on the annual 'Raising Achievement at GCSE' course. Leaving after school on a Friday afternoon, work was already well on the way by the time they downed tools on Friday evening. They joined students from other schools in their chosen workshops; which offered painting, printmaking and collage to sculpting in wire and paper.

The theme for the weekend was ‘The Urban Metropolis’ and together with contextual studies, students gained a deeper understanding of how artists interpret the urban environment. Mr Rees kindly volunteered his time yet again to drive the minibus, and rediscovered his artistic side in Miss Harris’ urban maps workshop.

After a full day on Saturday and an intensive Sunday morning, the weekend culminated in a grand exhibition. Responses were exciting and varied and our students returned to School exhausted but armed with beautiful pieces of coursework for their GCSE. Well done, everyone, it was a pleasure to take you to Conway!

Miss K Clulow

History on the High Seas On Friday 1st March, 49 students from Year 8 visited the Maritime Museum for the History department’s annual trip to learn about the Slave Trade and the Titanic. The students enjoyed the experience and were able to develop their knowledge beyond the classroom to assist in their understanding of these topics.

Spanish Exchange 2018-2019 Our 25th consecutive Spanish Exchange came to a successful end on the 27th March as we said a sad farewell to our 16 Spanish friends from Valdepeñas in Spain.

This was the second leg of the trip in this academic year as students from the Heber welcomed friends who they had already met in Spain back in October. A very pleasant week of weather greeted our Spanish friends with plenty of sunshine and gardens in magnificent bloom showing off the very best of Britain in the springtime.

Our guests enjoyed historical, cultural and educational trips to Manchester, Ironbridge, Powis Castle and even a much-anticipated joint trip to Chester Zoo. Time was also well spent with Spanish students spending a morning in school and having a look at how we like to do things here at the Heber.

All in all another very successful exchange trip was had by everybody and students have had a fantastic opportunity to sharpen up their Spanish conversational skills. Congratulations to all students from the Heber who took part in what can often be a very daunting but immensely rewarding experience. Also an enormous thank you to parents for their support and sharing their homes for the duration and making our guests feel so welcome. Muchas gracias.

If you are interested in taking part in the 2019-2020 Spanish Exchange then look out for details after the Spring Break in April when information letters will be coming home to all students currently studying Spanish in Year 8 and 9.

Performing Arts Heber Footlights There have been two major events in the Performing Arts calendar in the last few weeks of the Spring Term. March 12th witnessed our annual Heber Footlights Performing Arts concert. A full main school hall was entertained in the culmination of many weeks of auditions and rehearsals from our students.

The orchestra, choir and Year 11 BTEC dancers were joined by over 30 solo and small group acts who made it through to the final showcase. Songs from shows, pop songs, rock groups, contemporary dance, devised drama and instrumental items combined to create a stunning programme of the best talent the school has to offer.

The accompanying programme (below) conveys the quantity and range of talent on display during the evening. Many congratulations to everyone who took part, representing the school so well and doing themselves proud! And if you didn’t make it through to the final concert this time - do try again next year.

Musical Spotlights

On Wednesday March 20th we welcomed colleagues and students from many of our partner primary schools in a Music Celebration co-ordinated by our music education hub from Edsential, Musical Routes.

We were entertained by musical items from Malpas Alport, Clutton, Tilston and Tushingham-with-Grindley primary schools. Students from Year 11 at Heber also performed, demonstrating the progress that can be made by students who commit to music into and throughout their secondary school careers.

Pictured are (left to right), Marie Clare (11JSy), Hannah Grimshaw (11CWs), Esme Mathialahan (9AJo) and Morgan Tomlins (11JSy) who all contributed high quality items to a thoroughly enjoyable morning of music making.

Success & Achievement Red Nose Day

On Friday 15th March 2019, students supported the biannual Red Nose Day by fundraising for Comic Relief;

Year 7 Students had a cake sale during break time - many thanks to all those Year 7 students who baked and brought in cakes and to the Form Reps for helping to set up, sell the cakes and clear up. The final total raised was £159.30!

The U18 netball squad challenged the U18 Rugby/Soccer squads to a charity game of netball. With the boys slightly out of their comfort zone and the girls on top form having just returned from a successful tour of Barbados, the girls closed out the match 13 goals to six. Even with the additional support of Mr Badley the boys just could not narrow the gap. £90 was raised in donations to watch the game and a lot of fun was had by all.

Cyber Discovery Cyber Discovery, HM Government's Cyber Schools Programme, is an extracurricular learning programme for students aged 14-18 across the UK. Its goal is to ensure that many more people enter the cyber security profession in the coming years.

The programme has four stages. Congratulations to Jack Shone (12SFr), Sam Forster (11JSy), Kyle Owen (10DHe) and Jack Poole (9THa) for successfully completing the first two rounds – CyberStart Assess and CyberStart Game. The ultimate prize is to attend CyberStart Elite summer school where students will be taught by security professionals on cyber security and hacking techniques.

This national competition is sponsored by HM Government and industry to find the cyber security whiz kids of the future. They need to solve complex puzzles by finding holes and security flaws in a number of web sites, cracking codes and using different encryption techniques. For more information about the programme, you can go online at www.joincyberdiscovery.com.

British Physics Olympiad 2019 Year 11 GCSE Physics students undertook the highly stimulating British Physics challenge on the 15th March 2019 whereby they had to apply their Physics and Maths experience in solving taxing problems. The BPhO is regarded as one of the most challenging tests for students and it often sat by students in the independent schooling system. All students achieved a Commendation Award for participating in the tough and stretching challenge.

Awards were presented to;

Gold

Sebastian Armstrong (11JSy)

Silver

Elliott Preece (11AGr)

Bronze 1

Lunchtime News The School Canteen has a special role to play in the education, health and wellbeing of the students that they serve and here at Bishop Heber we take this responsibility very seriously. We know that you need to feed the body in order to fuel the brain and that is our aim.

We provide a breakfast menu from 8:30a.m. to 9:00a.m. where students can purchase a range of products including toast, fresh fruit, bagels, porridge, bacon baps and hot drinks. Prices start from as little as 25p.

At break time there is the opportunity for students to purchase breakfast items plus a range of additional snacks such as pizza slices, chicken nuggets, fruit pots, fruit muffins and a full range of sandwiches and healthy salad options.

Lunchtime is a very busy period and we serve hot and cold food options to approximately 800 students and staff on a daily basis. We offer a wide range of menu items from paninis and pasta to a roast dinner or an all-day breakfast which are all really popular.

We operate a lunchtime rota for all students which means that each year group has an equal share of early and later service times.

As you know we operate a cashless system and each student pays for their purchases using their Smartcard. The easiest way to top up their card is to do so online, if you haven’t yet registered for this then you can request your unique login details from our Finance team by emailing [email protected]. Did you know that by registering you can also see all of your child’s canteen purchases? You can also set up an email alert to remind you to top up their card once it falls below a certain level.

We also aim to cater for all dietary requirements, gluten free, dairy free, vegan, vegetarian and food intolerances and allergies. If your child has a specific food requirement that you would like to discuss then please contact the Catering Manager who will be happy to help.

We do not use nuts in any of the products produced in the canteen however some of the products we buy in may have the following warning on them, 'made in a factory that also uses nuts’. Also some sandwiches in our range may contain nuts but these will all have this stated on the nutritional information label.

Throughout the School we use local services and trades wherever possible to support the local economy and the same goes for the ingredients in our food. We source our fresh meat locally and use other companies local to the area.

Sugar is a big health concern and as such we made the decision to cut down the amount of sugar that we use. So since we came back to school after the February break we have been using 33% less sugar in all the cakes and biscuits that we produce on-site but decided not to tell any of the students or staff. No one has noticed or commentated that these (slightly less) sweet treats taste different so we will continue with the new recipes.

Palm oil is another product that is in the headlines and whilst sadly we cannot totally move away from ingredients containing palm oil we do ensure that we only purchase ones where the palm oil is from a sustainable source.

If you wish to contact the Catering Manager then please do so by emailing [email protected]

Local Events Careers Convention

As mentioned earlier, we hosted the biennial Careers Convention at School on Wednesday 13th March. The evening encouraged students from Year 9 - 13 and their parents to chat to people who actually do the job and explore as many different career pathways as possible. They could also speak with many training providers and Colleges/Universities to research different courses and qualifications linked with many job situations.

Carden Park Hotel were once again our sponsor and generously provided refreshments for guests and organised printing of the brochure for the event. As sponsor they had a range of staff from the Hotel, covering HR Management, Hotel Management, Beauty and Spa Therapists and Golf Professionals to give students an insight into the wide range of jobs involved in the hotel industry.

Over 100 exhibitors attended the Careers Convention covering Further and Higher Education organisations; Gap Year organisations, Apprenticeship and Training companies, Public Services including Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Royal Marines and Police. In addition a huge range of organisations covered job areas including: Accounting, Banking, Finance and Insurance; Architecture, Construction and Surveying; Art, Fashion and Interior Design; Education and Childcare; Engineering; Equine; Food and Beverage; Hair and Beauty; Horticulture and Floristry; Hospitality, Event Management and Travel; Law; Logistics; Manufacturing; Marketing; Media, Drama and Performing Arts; Medicine and Health; Veterinary Science and Nursing.

Over 600 visitors experienced the evening and feedback has been very positive from students, parents and from exhibitors. All the exhibitors volunteered to support the event and help students in researching different career opportunities. We believe it is important for students to access the right information to help them make well informed career decisions. We thank all the organisations who contributed to making the evening a huge success and supporting students of the School.

Sports Synchronised Ice Skating

Alyssa Pridding (10DHe; Captain) and Scarlett Lowe (7C&F; Vice Captain) skating for Deeside Angels synchronised ice skating team finished the season on a high with joint top score in the inaugural Steel City trophy in Sheffield. Unfortunately, they were awarded Silver medals as joint scores are separated by the superior performance score instead of the superior technical score (which would have seen Angels receive Gold medals). However, a Silver medal to go with Bronze medals won at Nationals in Nottingham in January, Cardiff in December, Belgium in November and London in September capped a fantastic season.

Meanwhile, Alice Whatmough’s (9SMc) team finished the season as Silver medalists from Dumfries, Nationals in Nottingham and London, to go with their Gold medal from The Welsh Open in Cardiff. Congratulations too to Jess Hennessey (8T&U) skating for two different teams at Nationals for Deeside’s Gwasyneidar and Dreigiou Tan; securing their best ever scores and positions.

Netball Year 7 and 8 competed in the Chester and District Netball tournaments this month.

Year 7 A Team – 13th March at Kings School

This team have worked really hard all year and have had many good results in the friendly matches building up to this tournament, which was very well attended with all 11 schools competing in very cold and windy conditions. Students played really well in the group stage and qualified for the semi-finals where they played Christleton. Despite a good performance we lost to Christleton in the semi-finals, who went on to be the eventual winners of the tournament.

Year 7 B Team – tournament was postponed due to poor weather and is still to be played.

Year 8 A Team – 5th March at Bishops Chester

This team went into this tournament having only lost one friendly fixture all season. They progressed well in the group stages of the competition and qualified for the semi-finals. The semi-final was against Upton, a very strong team who dominated the whole competition. Students played really well but lost the semi-final to the eventual tournament winners.

Year 8 B Tournament – 12th March at Heber

With only five schools in the district having a B team in Year 8, the competition was tough for Heber. The team showed determination and excellent teamwork in their matches against Tarporley, Upton, Queens and Kings. The winners of the tournament were Upton.

Mrs J Harndon

Year 9 students played in the Chester and District Netball Tournament at Bishops on Wednesday 27th February 2019. The played fast, flowing netball all night and the two matches they lost were close fought and could have gone either way. This squad has much potential for the future.

Sports Season overview 2018-19 This year has been the most successful season in the School’s history. From Year 7 through to Sixth Form we have seen outstanding performances at District, County and National competitions in both boys and girls sports.

Boys Rugby

Congratulations to the Sixth Form, Year 8 and Year 9 Rugby Sevens squads who both won their Cheshire Tournaments held at Chester Rugby Club on their new 4G.

Both Year 8 and Year 9 squads finished undefeated throughout all of their matches. The Year 8 team have also gone the whole season undefeated in the 13-a-side format.

The Year 7 squad also had a great day and performance at the Kings Macclesfield Sevens tournament. Winning two, drawing two and losing one (to the overall winners) in the group to go through to shield final unfortunately losing 10-5 to St Ambrose.

Many thanks to Mr Martin, Mr Badley, Mr Curry, the parents at the School and both Whitchurch and Wrexham Rugby clubs who have fully supported rugby at Heber. A huge amount of gratitude has to go Mr Kelly who has played a key part in the coaching of the teams from Year 7 – Sixth Form in what has been a very busy and challenging year.

Can we also say a big thank you to Mr Walsh and his company Nationwide Franking Sense Ltd. - they have kindly agreed to sponsor three new rugby kits for the School teams.

Girls Rugby After a fantastic uptake to the girl’s rugby this year and with regular training sessions led by Miss Genders and Mr Kelly, the girls have had the opportunity to take part in a number of events.

Two of our U15 girls’ squads took on a number of schools at the Chester Rugby Club festival earlier in the term, winning five out of six games.

The U13 girls also took take part in the Cheshire Rugby tournament and coaching festival, where all the girls fully enjoyed the experience and opportunity to develop their rugby skills.

Handball Congratulations to The U15 Boys who were crowned District Handball champions this term and also represented Chester Schools at the County Finals last week winning the award of ‘Spirit of the Game’. A great achievement to say the boys only took up the sport competitively after Christmas.

Mr M Lindley

Girls Football The Girls U15 side reached the quarter finals of the National Cup, losing out to St. Ivo from Cambridge very narrowly (though we should say there were some very contentious decisions by the referee). Despite this the girls should be very proud of this achievement and their performances this season.

The Girls U14 side once again won the District 7-a-side and reached the County 7-a-side finals, finishing runners up and have also reached the County 11-a-side final that will be played after Easter.

Mr M Lindley

Boys Football For the first time we had four teams - Year 7, 8, 10 and 11 all reaching the 11-a-side District Finals. Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 B boys were all 7-a-side champions and Year 7 also District 5-a-side champions. The Sixth Form also reached the District and County semi-finals.

Year 7 district 11-a-side football champions.

Year 10 district 11-a-side winners.

Year 11 district 11-a-side runners up.

U16 & U18 Netball Tour to Barbados

The U18 and U16 netball teams have just returned from an extremely successful tour of Barbados (14.2.19 – 24.2.19) – our 6th visit to this wonderful country. The girls are all keen netball players who attend training on a regular basis at School, competing at District and County level. Many have been planning and saving for this trip of a lifetime since starting at Bishop Heber in Year Seven.

The girls stayed in self-catered accommodation on the west coast of the island near Oistens, shopping at local markets and cooking for themselves. Barbados is 14 miles wide and 21 miles long and divided into 11 Parishes (districts). We managed to visit seven of these Parishes gaining a flavour for this geographically diverse little island. The group enjoyed a brief visit to Codrington College - the oldest Anglican theological college in the Western Hemisphere travelling on to Bathsheba on the wild North Atlantic east coast. The girls also enjoyed a cruise snorkelling with turtles and tropical fish amongst the coral reef of the Caribbean Sea. At Coleridge and Parry High School the girls were given a tour around the school and an introduction to the Bajan Education System and unique customs and traditions. They then set out to defeat their hosts on one of the hottest afternoons of the tour!

Harbour Lights was an unforgettable evening of Caribbean entertainment where the girls sang and danced the night away. Other visits included a visit to Carlyle Bay and The Boatyard on the West Coast and the world famous Oistens Friday Night Fish Fry where local traders and entertainers kept the girls enthralled all night. The group have been involved in numerous fundraising ventures over the past two years to help finance the trip but are extremely grateful to our main sponsors - Carden Park, Woodlands Ice Cream, Hoots and Axis for their interest and financial support.

I would like to thank the girls for their commitment at training and in matches over the past few years in preparation for this experience. Our fitness proved the winning factor – all the pre tour training and ‘bleep tests’ paid off. No-one can play in 27 degrees of heat over 60 minutes at a furious pace without being fit. With seven wins out of a possible eight it was definitely one of our most successful tours and special congratulations to the U16’s for being undefeated. The behaviour of the girls was exemplary throughout the 11 days. We were proud to receive compliments on a daily basis from hotel staff and residents about the girls’ behaviour and the way they conducted themselves. My thanks also go to Miss Smith and Miss Bidwell for all their support and encouragement with the preparation for the tour and whilst we were away. Photographs will be available on disc after the Easter break – special memories that will last a lifetime.

IMPORTANT P.E. NOTICES KIT Can all students/parents please ensure that all P.E. kit is named and not left in School overnight either on the racks or outside in the yard. The School has been inundated with emails regarding lost kit this term. Please note that the School is community use from 6.00p.m. and unfortunately if items are left visible there is a possibility of being taken. Lockers are available from the Main School Office for a small charge.

MATCH FEES As you will be aware the P.E. department organises a thriving and extremely busy sports fixtures list throughout the Academic Year, with Students taking part in friendly matches, District, County and National competitions.

Coach bookings cost £200+ to the majority of venues, often a lot more. The mini bus is used frequently in addition for small fixtures. Realistically every away match a student plays costs £5 per student. Those of you who have sons/daughters that play for sports teams in the community will know that most clubs charge a season’s affiliation plus around a £5 match fee for every game. If we are to continue to provide matches for our School teams we have no alternative other than to ask parents to contribute a voluntary season’s fee.

Letters will go out to parents after Spring Break regarding the contribution for transport costs. This is £15 for one sport and £20 for involvement in two or more sports from the season.

Please support the School and the Department in ensuring that we can still offer this high quality extra-curricular programme.

Road Safety It has been noted that some vehicles are using the Sixth Form access gate to drop off students in the mornings. This has raised Health and Safety concerns:

• Vehicles are entering pedestrian areas to turn round

• Vehicles are in excess of the 5 mph speed limit

• Vehicles trying to get out are holding up vehicles trying, to get in causing congestion on an already busy road

To alleviate this problem and to reduce the risk to staff and students we have decided to make this a staff only access gate from 8 a.m. - 9 a.m. and an exit gate from 3.45 p.m. - 4.30 p.m. After this time it will be open for leisure centre uses only.

Thank you for your cooperation.
