Welcome to Celebrate 2016Dear Friends,

Tonight, we usher in the Fast of Esther as we prepare for the celebration of Purim that follows on its heels. Esther represents a powerful model of female Jewish leadership that stems from a deep commitment to the

future fl ourishing of the Jewish people. Esther’s leadership was demonstrated not only in the halls of Persian political power, but according to the Talmud, also in the deliberations of the early sages who, as a result of her persuasive arguments, decided to establish Purim as an everlasting holiday and the Scroll of Esther as a sacred book. Esther not only saved the Jewish people of the Persian Empire, she served as a catalyst for a new, post-prophetic Judaism. It is in recognition of the biblical Esther’s legacy that the Hebrew College community gathers this evening to celebrate women’s leadership.

Hebrew College is proud to confer its fi rst Esther Awards on four women who have become signifi cant leaders in our Jewish community. Geraldine Acuña-Sunshine, Winnie Sandler Grinspoon, Sari Anne Rapkin, and Betty Ann Greenbaum Miller z”l have embodied Hebrew College’s motto: Jewish learning and leadership for a pluralistic world. Their achievements as communal and philanthropic leaders have enriched our community through their passion for Jewish learning and living.

Our keynote speaker, Ellen Goodman, is a recognized leader and pioneer in the fi eld of journalism, and has recently focused her entrepreneurial energies into founding The Conversation Project. We hope to gain new insights into women’s leadership from her vast experience and keen observations of social and political change.

Hebrew College takes great pride in the accomplishments of our alumnae, students and faculty who are paving new paths in Jewish leadership, scholarship, education and spirituality. Our fi rst graduating class in 1925 was comprised of ten men and three women. Today, women make up the majority of our students across the various schools and programs of Hebrew College. Their vision and voices contribute signifi cantly to the vitality of Jewish life in North America, Israel and throughout the world.

Thank you, supporters and friends of Hebrew College, for helping to make this evening a success, and for providing the resources necessary for Hebrew College to continue its role as the premier center of Jewish learning and leadership for our pluralistic world.

With gratitude and blessings,

Daniel Lehmann

How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!—Maya Angelou

Thank you, Winnie, Sari and Geraldine for everything you have done for our community. Your leadership and commitment are an inspiration to us all.

Betty Ann, your compassion and commitment to making the world a better place has left an everlasting imprint on all those you touched in this life. We are better people because of you. We love you and we miss you.

A: When I first came to Judaism, I knew nothing. I remember having an indescribable fear in the pit of my stomach that I would go through life as a smart, seemingly accomplished, resume-glowing…zombie. With each worldly accomplishment, I would feed my inner demons who, at the end of each day, would leave me hollower than before. At night, I would pray to whomever might listen that I be shown some reason for being, some deeper sense of purpose and understanding of what it is I came on this Earth to do.

My prayer would be answered several years later in the form of a poem, whose haunting melody stirred something deep within my heart, but whose words I could not yet understand. The song was Avinu Malkeinu, sung at a traditional Kol Nidre service which a Jewish friend invited me to attend. When I eventually chose to follow the Jewish path and continued to grow in communal and spiritual understanding, the prayer came to embody the beauty that Judaism has brought to me, and continues to bring, into my life: a sense of divine love and wonder, an unrelenting education on the importance of justice and loving kindness, and a spiritual liberation born out of the many opportunities we are given as Jews to choose light over darkness and trust over fear.Today, I feel inordinately blessed not only to have found my Jewish path, but to also be a part of a loving Jewish community here in Boston, filled with seekers eager to share this journey with me. Through Judaism, I have finally found depth and meaning. And in our community, I have finally found my home.

A: My children attended a day school during its start-up phase. It was a wonderful school, but it lacked the facilities and sports programs of more established schools.

I remember the day my son visited another day school to play basketball. He came home talking nonstop about that “real” school, with its basketball court, coaches and uniforms. He complained on and on about how bad his school was in comparison.

I let him vent, and then I explained how the “real” school came to be. I told him about the people who raised money to build that gym and hire the coaches and buy the uniforms. I explained that they served on fundraising committees, and they donated their own money. I explained that many people helped that school as volunteers, often after work hours, when they could have been at home watching TV. I let him know that the process took energy and effort. His school would enhance its facilities and programs over time, so long as people valued the school and were willing to dedicate themselves to it.

Our Jewish communities thrive because of the people I was describing. They roll up their sleeves and give of themselves to build and improve our community. They value what our community offers, and they support it.

My fellow honorees are those people. In fact, I attended one of my first day school community gatherings in Betty Ann’s home. It is a true honor to be recognized among this group of women.

A: As a young girl, I remember being introduced to the story of Esther in the Megillah. I was excited to find a hero that was female; perhaps I was looking for my first woman role model. I was inspired by Esther’s unique leadership qualities as she demonstrated courage and took risks in order to save our people.

Over thirty years ago, I moved to Boston and became involved in the Jewish community. At the time, Boston was beginning its renaissance. We were building our new JCC in Newton; CJP was beginning a bold partnership with Haifa; day schools were growing; and innovative adult Jewish education programs were introduced. At the heart of this growing Jewish community, were numerous examples of bold and extremely capable women in important leadership positions. Once again, I was inspired by strong women role models. This was a community that I wanted to be part of.

When I began volunteering, I didn’t think of myself as a leader. I was invited to get involved by several welcoming female mentors. I just focused on using my unique skills in the best way possible to benefit the community, and stepping up when asked. That’s probably a very Jewish approach to leadership! When God puts Abraham to the test, Abraham answers his call with a simple answer: Hineni, Here I am. This is a powerful example; to me, it means having courage to accept responsibility and faith that what I can offer will be enough.

CJP’s President Barry Shrage always says, “We have the right leader at the right time.” This kind of faith in our community is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It allows each person to bring their authentic style of leadership, which won’t be the same as the person who came before. That is the perfection of kehillah, of community; we don’t have to lead alone, but in partnership with others. Together, we give each other balance and strength.

Our Jewish community is filled with unique and inspiring talent. I see it everywhere I go, at every organization with which I’m involved. From the inspiring professionals at our Jewish organizations, to the powerhouse volunteer leaders on our boards, we are blessed with innovators, doers, thinkers and change makers. And yet, we need every single person in our community to say Hineni in order to be the best we can be. As a woman, I believe that I have a responsibility to invite other women to step up. However, you don’t need to wait to be asked. I urge you to add your unique voice to the chorus, and add your gifts to our communal table. Thank you to Hebrew College for celebrating Women’s Leadership and Philanthropy. I am humbled to be honored with the Esther Award together with such outstanding community leaders.

Betty Ann Greenbaum Miller z”l T A P E S T R Y

Betty Ann graduated from Stanford University in 1983 with a Bachelor’s degree in human biology. Her work in philanthropy and volunteerism began at Stanford as a student volunteer for a newly founded quarterly magazine, Surviving, which was among the first publications to address the physical and emotional issues faced by cancer survivors such as Betty Ann.

After raising two sons, Adam and Matthew, her focus turned once again to her interest in Judaism, and in compassionate care: she became involved in the early 1990’s at The Rashi School as a parent and a board member; completed

Hebrew College’s Me’ah program in 1999; was a founding member of the Advisory Council for Jewish Family & Children’s Service’s Jewish Healing Connections; received her Masters in Jewish Studies in 2005 from Hebrew College, where she was a founding member of Journeys on the Hill, the predecessor to CIRCLE, the Center for Inter-religious and Communal Leadership Education; and entered the Clinical Pastoral Education program at Hebrew SeniorLife in 2008. While her health issues did not allow her to complete her chaplaincy certification, she was indeed a chaplain to those who knew her, and was a member of the National Association of Jewish Chaplains.

Betty Ann and her husband Dan met and became inseparable in 1974 while presidents of their respective B’nai B’rith Youth Organization (BBYO) chapters. They were married for nearly 36 years, prior to her death last summer.

I see each individual life represented by a single thread. Each thread is tied on and woven into the other threads that were there before and that come after. The varieties of threads create a beautiful pattern that flow through the fabric as if on the breath of life itself.

When I am closest to the image of the tapestry, all I can see is my own thread and the few threads directly around me. When I stand back and look at as much as I am able, I see that my life thread is but a fragment of a whole whose beginning and end is out of my view. I also notice other things. I notice that the pattern of the tapestry changes and yet feels familiar. I notice there are knots, and frays and warped areas throughout the shawl. I notice vibrant colors, and even deadly colors. Colors that make me weep with joy, and colors that cause my retreat. I notice holes, tears, rips, and uneven weave. I notice patches, and darning, and do-overs.

When I look very closely, I see my thread has many frays and knots and pulls. I see places where it seems that the thread is even broken and then resumes its weave farther on in the pattern. I see when my thread has been ripped. Other times, I can see my thread blowing in a breeze, barely connected with any will and no strength…that is when the other threads around me hold my space in the tapestry.

Even as they weave their own definition of color and texture, they remind me of my place. They share mending materials; they make suggestions for knots. They show me different and new directions of weave, maybe stronger ones and simpler ones. They even might share a piece of their own thread, which can be very close to breaking too. They always pull me back in, when my broken thread is beginning to float away…

This is when the real healing begins and the tapestry repairs its holes. This is when the threads of the many separate lives take on an inexplicable iridescent golden aura. This is when I am no longer afraid and alone because someone has held onto my thread for me with his or her own life. They hold on, while I mend my own thread.

The whole tapestry is once again salvaged and strengthened. Its beauty is calming and comforting. It seems to be life itself, or maybe life’s companions, love and compassion. The golden thread is woven so gently into so many of the single threads. In and out, all over every perfect and imperfect thread of the tapestry, it continues its elegant journey, floating effortlessly and endlessly through time and space with our frayed and broken… and golden threads in it.

Esther Award for Leadership and Philanthropy

Dan Miller, Betty Ann’s husband, o ers this introduction:

Betty Ann’s vision of life—as a tapestry or prayer shawl of intertwined threads—gave her tremendous comfort and strength to live with the challenges of chronic illness. The poem is more than metaphorical; it is her attempt to put into words a vision that came to her during a very difficult surgical procedure over 20 years ago. I find her vision of a community connected through time and space gives me great comfort as well during this difficult period.

Ellen GoodmanEllen Goodman has spent most of her life as keen observer, chronicling the way families, women’s lives, the media and values have been transformed over the turbulent past generation. She has been an innovative force in American journalism, commenting on the tumult and impact of social change.

Ellen began her career as a researcher for Newsweek magazine in the days when only men wrote for the newsweekly. She landed a job as a reporter for the Detroit Free Press in 1965 and, in 1967, for The Boston Globe where she began writing her column in 1974 which was syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group two years later. Shattering the mold of exclusively men writing about politics, she was one of the first women to open up the op-ed pages to women’s voices. Ellen’s Pulitzer Prize winning commentary has appeared in more than 400 newspapers. She wrote her twice-weekly column until 2010 when she left with a column about the virtues of “letting myself go.”

A 1963 cum laude graduate of Radcliffe College, Goodman returned to Harvard in 1973-74 as a Nieman Fellow, where she studied the dynamics of social change, and again in 2007 as a Shorenstein Fellow.

Now, as founder of The Conversation Project, she shares insights and inspiration, encouraging families and individuals to tell their stories and express their wishes for end-of-life care.

Jewish Women’s Philanthropy: An Historical View

Tonight, we celebrate women philanthropists whose generosity and hard work has a great impact on Jewish education in our community. Boston women, it should come as no surprise, have always been ahead of the curve on women’s philanthropy, including quietly founding the fi rst-ever Federation women’s campaign in 1917. Our students are blessed to live and study at Hebrew College where women’s leadership is modeled and celebrated. At the same time, we must remember that such recognition is newer and rarer than we might think.

Though women have been moving American Jewish philanthropy forward for over 200 years, they were often historically blocked from positions of power, even in the organizations they created. In the 1800’s and early 1900’s, many women’s organizations had male presidents or treasurers, leaving women out of ultimate positions of power. This dichotomy - women encouraged and lauded for raising funds, yet cut off from deciding how to spend them - refl ected emerging middle class norms about “women’s domestic sphere.”

Despite being disempowered or relegated to auxiliaries, sisterhoods and sewing societies, Jewish women thwarted those norms in quiet but powerful ways. Under the cover of the domestic sphere were created the fi rst Jewish Sunday school, orphanages, benevolent societies, and national Jewish organizations advocating for Israel and social change for women. In 1920,

inspired by suff rage, American Hebrew columnist Zelda Popkin demanded equality in charity work, “as at the polls.”

Hearing this call over the last century, leaders and donors have worked toward that end. Women are now welcome in Federation’s Young Leadership Cabinet. Jewish women’s foundations throughout the country invest in social change for women and girls in North America and Israel. The campaign known as “Men as Allies” empowers male leaders to refuse to sit on all-male panels, thus ensuring that conferences include women experts. These Jewish community evolutions, in concert with evolutions of social norms around work, family and philanthropy, continue to move the needle on women as leaders and major donors in our Jewish organizations and foundations.

In Parshat Vayakhel, which calls upon “men and women, all whose hearts moved them” to help build the mishkan (tabernacle), we see the power of such an inclusive community to inspire universal generosity. When all are included and encouraged to bring their passions and unique skills, Moses actually has to ask the Israelites to stop giving, “…their eff orts had been more than enough for all the tasks to be done” (Exodus 36:6). Tonight’s work of uncovering and celebrating women’s philanthropy and leadership, and providing role models for future leaders of any gender, continues our community down the path of realizing all of its many gifts.

MISSIONMISSIONHEBREW COLLEGE

Hebrew College promotes excellence in Jewish learning and leadership within a pluralistic environment of open inquiry, intellectual rigor, personal engagement and spiritual creativity. We empower and inspire individuals to contribute their voices and vision to the Jewish community and to bring Jewish values to bear on the critical issues of our time.

Dedicated to building bridges between the academy and the community, we off er diverse educational and cultural programs for youths, adults and Jewish professionals, and seek to invigorate Jewish life through the following core values:

A H AVA T T O R A H : A L O V E O F L E A R N I N G

At the heart of Hebrew College is our vibrant learning community. We share the conviction that education is the key to Jewish vitality, and we are devoted to rigorous study of the full breadth of Jewish religion and culture. Together, we foster lifelong Jewish learning that engages the whole person, challenging the mind and nourishing the soul.

A R E I V U T : E M B R A C I N G C O M M U N A L R E S P O N S I B I L I T Y

Jewish leaders in the 21st century must assume responsibility for both the Jewish future and the future of our planet. Hebrew College promotes learning in a context of communal commitment and concern — for our own local community, for Israel and Jewish communities around the world, and for all inhabitants of the Earth. Through education, activism, service and interfaith cooperation, we seek to bring healing to a world in need of repair.

E L U V ’ E L U : E N G A G I N G D I V E R S I T Y

As a pluralistic institution, we recognize and value human diversity. Within our own k’lal Yisrael community and in dialogue with people from other faith traditions, we actively engage a multiplicity of experiences and perspectives in an environment of mutual respect. The encounter with diff erent points of view prompts us to ask honest and searching questions of ourselves and of one another, and to see this process as a source of wisdom and strength.

Y E T Z I R A : F O S T E R I N G J E W I S H C R E A T I V I T Y

Judaism, at its best, is a creative, intellectual and spiritual encounter among the individual, the community and the received tradition. Hebrew College encourages and empowers learners to see themselves as both inheritors and innovators — active participants in the unfolding story of the Jewish people. We embrace music, literature and the visual and performing arts as sources of inspiration and as vital modes of Jewish discovery and expression.

Ben Zoma says:

•Who is wise? He who learns from every person, as it is said, ‘From all my teachers I grew wise.’

•Who is strong? He who overcomes his desire, as it is said, ‘He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit is better than he who conquers a city.’

•Who is rich? He who is happy in what he has, as it is said, ‘When you eat the labor of your hands, happy will you be, and all is well with you.’

•Who is honored? He who honors others, as it is said, ‘For those who honor Me I will honor.’
