Heights Happenings Winston Heights Newsletter

Dear Parents,
National Young Leaders Day
I had the pleasure of accompanying our school captains and vice captains
to National Young Leaders Day in the city this week. They joined 5000 other
primary school student leaders from across NSW to listen to inspirational
speakers talk about their leadership journeys. Please have a read of their
report in the newsletter.
P&C AGM and Special Meetings for Parent Organisations
Thank you to the many new parents who attended our first P&C meeting of the year. Our school is very lucky to have many
parent organisations all working to benefit our students and community.
The Just One Thing (JOT) form went home last week. Please consider seeing what you and your family are able to assist with
during the year. You are able to volunteer to help out at many different things, if you wish. The first thing on the agenda is
our upcoming Working Bee which will be held on Sunday 15th March.
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) for P&C will be on the 23rd March. All positions will be declared vacant at this time to
elect or re-elect a new Executive Committee. Special Meetings will be held for the Music Committee on the 18th March at
6:30pm and for the Canteen on Thursday 12th March at 6pm. Role statements for the committees will be emailed out soon
to all families.
ThinkUKnow Cybersafety Workshop
Please consider attending the parent workshop on Cybersafety on Thursday 2nd April. This will be run by our Police Liaison
Officer. The workshop is an opportunity to learn about keeping your children safe when they are using the internet and also
to ask questions that you may have with regards to cybersafety. A similar session was held two years ago for parents,
however, we have a different presenter and we all know that the internet is constantly changing and that more and more
social media sites become available. More information is available in the note sent home this week. We have also invited
Winston Hills Public School parents to the workshop as well.
Olympathon
Today all students have taken home a special Olympathon note and sponsorship form. This is our school major fundraiser
for the year. We have teamed up with Motiv8 Sports to hold our own Olympics. This event will take place on Thursday 26 th
March on the school oval between 11am – 1pm. The children have been sorted into groups of 11-12, ranging from
Kindergarten to Year 6. Our Stage 3 students will be leading their group (Country). Each country will compete in 20 fun
“Olympic” sports. Please read the detailed note for further information. Parents, carers and friends are more than welcome
to watch the Olympathon and then enjoy a picnic lunch on the school grounds at the conclusion of our Olympic sports.
123 Magic – Parent Workshop
Our school chaplain, Mrs Bowman, is currently running a parent workshop over 3 weeks. This workshop was very well
attended on Monday for the first session, with over 40 families being involved. We will ask parents to evaluate and will
possibly organise to run this again in Term 2 or 3.
Working Bee
Our first working bee is coming up on Sunday 15th March from 3-5pm. We are hoping to do some painting of posts and steps around the school plus some gardening. If you are available to help please let the P&C know through the JOT form or by email at [email protected] School Photos – Monday 16th March
In just over a week we will have our School Photo Day. All payments and orders are online. If you have misplaced your child’s individual order form, which includes their unique “shootkey” code, please contact MSP directly on: 9831 5505 or through their email: [email protected] Sibling photos will be taken from 8am in the school hall on the same day. If you want a sibling photo please order and pay for
the family photo online. Envelopes can be obtained from the school office. To have a family photo taken all children must be
in attendance at Winston Heights Public School.
Tell Them From Me Survey
I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Educa-
tion initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect aca-
demic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and
effective teaching practices.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au
The survey is a great opportunity for our students (Years 4-6 only) to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what
they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More
than 6 300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing
the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes
to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 16th March and 8th May. Participating in the survey is entire-
ly voluntary.
A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being emailed home. If you do not want your child or children
to participate, please return the form to school by 13th March.
Kind regards,
Margaret Creagh
Principal
National Young Leaders Day 2020
On Monday the 2nd March, Mrs Creagh, Alexander, Will, Haylee and Maya went to National Young Leaders Day at the ICC. We
met very early and went by bus to the city. When we went into the theatre we sat in the front row of the top stand.
The people running the event started off by teaching us some dances and all of the 5000 students and teachers joined in. We
played a few games between the speakers and met other students from other schools in NSW.
Erin Molan was the first speaker. She is a TV host on Channel 9. She talked about her life as a young woman. We were told that
she had moved to many different schools – 16 to be precise. She said that it was hard to make new friends. We were told that
she dreamed of being a journalist. She started to apply for her dream job but she was rejected 98 times. Erin received nasty
feedback on the streets and on social media after her first “real” television appearance but she never gave up. Now look where
she has ended up – a major TV presenter for Sports Programs.
The next speaker was Bianca Chatfield. Bianca told us her life story and how she got into netball. Her story was really inspira-
tional with a lot of motivating words. In middle school Bianca was very insecure about her height and always wanted to fit in.
Bianca started doing gymnastics but because she was too tall it just wasn’t the right fit for her. She was watching her sister play
netball so she decided to try it too. Shortly after starting netball she realised how much she was suited to it and it became her
passion. When Bianca turned 18 she became part of the Australian Netball team. She is a strong person who tried her best and
never gave up.
Rove McManus is a comedian, author and illustrator. In school Rove always drew on his work in the margins. He loved drawing.
In high school he was lucky to write and draw comics and wrote his own comic book in Year 7. He still has this book today. Rove
has written two books – Rocky Lobster and Disgusting McGroseface. We had a photo with Rove and he autographed one of his
books for our school library. His most important message to us was to do what you love.
We had a great day meeting people, listening to inspirational speakers and learning some important messages about what and
who a leader is. It was an awesome experience.
