Residents of the David Nkanti ar- ea in Lwandle broke down the near- by permanent toilets and blocked Onverwacht Road with the rubble. According to a Lwandle resident, Nkosinathi Ralarala, the protest- ers do not have permanent toilets in the David Nkanti area and have to make use of the permanent toi- lets in another area. He says only one of the eight toi- lets there was in a usable condition and the rest were broken or blocked. According to Constable Mtho- kozisi Gama, spokesperson for the Lwandle police, the protesters then proceeded to the home of local ward councillor, Tongidumo Maxheke to share their grievances. Maxheke says he received an ur- gent phone call on Sunday while at a meeting in Worcester, informing him that protesters were in his house. He says he immediately drove home to see what the problem was. On arrival at his house he saw that protesters were still in his house, but his neighbours protect- ed his property so nothing had been damaged. Maxheke told protesters to come and see him in his office the follow- ing day to discuss their grievances. When the protesters arrived the following day “in numbers”, they explained their need for perma- nent toilets. “Only then did I realise what the problem was,” Maxheke said. Residents were supplied with temporary toilets until the City of Cape Town could repair the stand- pipe toilets demolished during the protest. Maxheke says there are plans afoot to supply permanent toilets in the David Nkanti area. The City had not commented on the issue at the time of going to print. Gama says no arrests have been made, but a case of public violence is being investigated.

IN MEMORIAM: Well-knownand respected Strand residentLabieba Davids (seated on theleft) died of a sudden heart at-tack on Friday 27December. Asco-founder of the HOW (Hones-ty Open-minded Willingness)rehabilitation centre and theWestern Cape TherapeuticCommunity Centre (WCTCC) inStrand, Davids (68) will be re-membered for her love for peo-ple and contributions to the up-liftment of the community. Dav-ids also became a householdname for the indulgent, delicious samoosas and pies that she sold from hershop in Strand. She was buried according to Muslim rites on Friday around21:00 in Strand. Her funeral was attended by hundreds of people who cameto pay their last respects. Davids is survived by her husband, six children, grand-children and great grandchildren. permitte hernu en een nuwe permitis uitgereik.Tydens ’n dringende vergadering

tussen die Weskus- lynvisvereni-ging en die departement van land-bou, bosbou en visserye op Dinsdag7 Januarie, is daar toegegee dat lyn-vissermanne wat voorheen permit-te gehad het en meer as 300 dae tus-sen 2007 en 2012 visgevang het, tyde-lik kan visvang totdat dieappèlproses afgehandel is.Die besluit is wyd beskryf as ’n oorwinning

vir lynvissermanne en hul bemanningslede,maar Eugene Niemand van Strand sê hy issteeds onseker oor sy en sy tien bemanningsle-de se toekoms indien sy appèl nie slaag nie.Niemand was een van vele lynvissermanne

wat op Oujaarsaand die slegte nuus ontvanghet dat sy permit nie hernu is nie.Niemand verduidelik dat vissermanne eers

met die appèlproses kan beginwanneer die de-partementvanlandbou,bosbouenvisseryediepuntetoekenning aan lynvissermanne se aan-soeke en redes hoekom hulle aansoeke onsuk-sesvol was, oorhandig.ShaheenMoolla, ’n konsultant vir die visbe-

dryf, sê die puntetoekenning aan die aansoekeis “verdag”.Hy beskryf die departement van landbou,

bosbou en visserye se toewysing van permitteas “onwettig”. Alhoewel Moolla die tussentyd-se permit enappèl-prosesverwelkom,meenhydat lynvissermanne steeds regsaksie moetneem.Volgens homkandie besluit oor permit-te nie op ’n ministeriële vlak omgekeer wordnie en sal dit slegs in die hooggeregshof uitge-daag kan word. Hy verduidelik dat die stappenodig salwees omdat, volgenshom, slegs 18 ap-pèlle toegestaan kan word.

Niemand stem saam dat die puntetoeken-ning verdag lyk, omdat een van die vereistesvandie proses is dat diegenewat aansoek doenvir permitte ’n boot moet nomineer. Niemandsê van die nuwe permithouers het nie toegangtot bote nie.In ’n persverklaring verbind die departe-

NSRI helps tangled turtleThe Gordon’sBay NSRI re-cently rescueda sea turtle, af-ter it becameentangled in awater-ski rope.On Sunday 5

January, theNSRI was in-formed by theDepartment ofEnvironmen-tal Affairs -Oceans andCoasts, that aturtle was indistress closeto the harbourwall at the SANaval BaseCollege’s side of Gordon’s Bay har-bour.Paddlers were at the scene trying to

assist the turtle. The NSRI Gordon’sBay sea rescue craft Spirit of Surfskiresponded to assist to try and free theturtlel.

When theNSRI crewarrivedat thescene, theysaw the tur-tle had a wa-ter-ski ropearound itsbody andaround oneofits flippers.It appeared

that the ropehad beenthere for awhile as theit had fleshon it andthere werebarnacles onthe rope.

The rope was cut off very carefullyand the animal was freed.“On being released the animal swam

awayandseemedtobefine,”saysCraigLambinon, spokesperson for theNSRI.“NSRI is cautiously optimistic that

the animal will survive.”

Gordon’s Bay NSRI helped to rescue this sea turtle.

Stad ondersoek verblyfby Kay’s karavaanparkDALEEN FOUCHÉ

Die Stad Kaapstad gaan ’n ondersoekspansaamstelomdie“ingewikkelde”verblyfsi-tuasie by Kay’s Karavaanpark te onder-soek.

Dit volg nadat ’n brand op 13 Desember agthouthuise in die karavaanpark verwoes het.Skoonmaakpogings duur voort, met die StadKaapstad wat hand bygesit het op Nuwejaars-dag om dié proses te versnel.

Raadslid Garreth Bloor, die Stad se burge-meesterskomiteelid vir ekonomiese omge-wings en stadsbeplanning, sê dit wil voorkomof verskeie strukture ’n paar jaar gelede son-der toestemming in die karavaanpark opgerigis.SedertdienhetdieStaddiestruktureonder-soek en bevind dat die strukture nie perma-nent is nie en die bouregulasies dus nie hiervan toepassing is nie.

Bloor sê dit lyk egter asof inwoners perma-nent in die strukture woon, wat bedoel is om

slegs tydelike verblyf te verskaf en dat dít pro-blematies is. Hy het gesê die Stad sal die saakmet die eienaar van die park, Marcel Strump-her, bespreek.

Strumpher meen dat solank die strukturenie permanent is nie, maak dit nie saak hoelank die inwoners in die strukture woon nie.Hy sê as die Stad sy strukture wil verwyder,moet hulle al die Stad se informele nederset-tings verwyder. Die inwoners in die park hetgeen ander heenkome nie.

Strumpher sê hy het van sy vakansie-staan-plekke aan die inwoners wat hul huise verloorhet beskikbaar gestel. Dié inwoners het noutoegang tot water en elektrisiteit.

“Ek het ’n groot deel van my vakansie-in-komste verloor om die mense te akkommo-deer.”Die Burger het berig dat inwoners wat hul

huise verloor het nou gaan begin om hul huisete herbou. Alhoewel hulle reeds boumateriaalhet, is dit egter nie genoeg nie om hul huiseweer te bou nie.

Soccer academyhosts Mali teamThe Young Bafana Soccer Academy inSomerset West had the privilege ofhosting one of the teams competing inAfrica’s largest soccer tournament,the African Nations Championship(CHAN), for a training session on Sat-urday 4 January.

According to Bernd Steinhage, headcoach/founder of Young Bafana SoccerAcademy, the nationalMali teamarrivedby police convoy. He says that the acade-my, which is based at Hottentots-HollandHigh School (HHH), was initially goingto host the team for the entire durationof the tournament.
