Where we know what it is to be a learner

‘I want to give something back to the school.’

‘I hope to make my family proud.’

‘I really want to make a difference.’

‘I’d like to try and help make our school better.’

‘I think I’m a good role model for our younger students.’

Helensville School - Where we know what it is to be a learner

These were typical of the comments we heard from our

prospective school leaders during the recent interview process

for Head Boy and Head Girl. Needless to say, we were

impressed. It’s difficult when you have a group of students

wanting to take on a leadership role for all the right reasons,

and you can only select a certain number: it was our students

who made this job a little easier.

In schools today, we often refer to ‘student voice’. This

applies to all aspects of learning, the way things happen at

school, how our playgrounds run and also to the selection of

our student leadership team. It’s about listening to students

and being responsive to what they have to say. I was

particularly pleased to see that our students, in their voting,

selected the same students for these senior leadership roles

as our staff did. I’ve asked several of our senior students,

not who they voted for, but how they chose. Their answers

reflect a genuine respect for their peers and a willingness to

go outside their own friendship group to acknowledge those

who have demonstrated true leadership qualities.

I’m delighted to announce that the team our students, and

also our staff, selected for 2016 are:

Head Girl – Angelina Sipa

Head Boy – Regan Neville

Deputy Head Girl – Jessi Wells

Deputy Head Boy – Moses Phillips-Ryder

Our thanks go to all those students who put themselves out

there, took a risk and tried out for a senior leadership role.

Many were successful, as you will also see further in our

newsletter, all got some votes, which is encouraging for them,

and all will benefit from the learning which occurs when you

go through a process such as this. I appreciate how gracious

students were when they heard it wasn’t them who had been

chosen on this occasion; of course they were disappointed, but

it was good to see them allowing others their moment in the

sun. You all did us proud, Senior School.

Our special congratulations to our new student leaders: arohia

Good luck to all the Years 5-8 that are

The CEC programme ‘Life Choices’ will begin again in Years 1-2 (Junior Team) and Years 3-4 (Lower Middle Team) classes on 11th March 2016. This programme maintains a biblical basis and utilises the key competencies and Values of the NZ curricu-lum, retaining a distinctly unique NZ perspective, including famous NZ’ers stories, like Sir Edmund

Hilary, Kate Bush and Tarore. There is a specific learning outcome for each session, for example The Good Samaritan story looks at Relating to Others – students are encouraged to think about the idea of who a neighbour is – looking at Values of Integrity, respect, equity, and how we can help others in trouble. The programme is presented in a fun, open, non-judgemental way appropriate for all children in a school environment, no matter their belief system. This, by teachers who receive professional development and undergo police vetting and are overseen by the class teacher. If you have any questions or queries, there is a website – www.cec.org.nz or you are welcome to ring Waldon Ellett on 09 4208238 or contact Yvonne Harland on 0291200641 [email protected] Offers of support would be welcome. As a student workbook will be purchased for your child, it would be appreciated if you could contact your child’s teacher as soon as possible, if you will be withdrawing them or if you have withdrawn them previously and would now like them to be included.

Helensville School - Where we know what it is to be a learner

This morning Room 6 and 7 went on a

pirate ship adventure. On the adventure

we went looking for treasure to keep and

to take home. Hoist the sails. Then we

sailed away to an island. At the island

we hunted for treasure.

By Raya

Room 6 have been learning to write recounts.

Here are some of the adventures we have been on.

On the weekend I went on a pirate ship.

It was stormy. I saw a sea monster. I

saw a shark. The waves were bumpy and

fun.

By Adrienne

Today Room 6 and Room 7 went on a

pirate ship. We saw a shark and a sea

monster and then we saw an island. We

sailed to the island and we dug for

treasure. In the treasure there was

gold and jewels and diamonds.

By Dana

This morning Room 6 and Room 7 went on

an alien spaceship. I saw a lot of aliens.

They were friendly. We saw the moon

and a rocket ship and asteroids. I like

the aliens.

By Ollie

This morning my class went on a pirate

ship. We made my teacher walk the

plank. We got wet. We jumped in too

because the boat was sinking. Then we

saw heaps of

fish.

By Kadin

In the morning we went on an alien ship

and we crashed on Mars. We built it

again. We went back again. The alien

went to the moon and they had a party.

They came back to give us a ride around

the moon and we had

another party. I loved it.

The Upper Middle Team had a fantastic four days away at Camp Adair, just outside Hunua. The amazing experience included fun, (often challenging) activities that brought us all together as we worked on our teamwork and personal abilities. Check out these few snaps from our memorable time away.
