Hello, ladies! I hope that all of you are off and running with our programs. Each unit does not have to try to do every ALA program to the full extent. Select the ones that your members are interested in and do those well. Make an impact in your community. Get the ALA'S name out there! As per Rosie the Riveter, we can do it! October was an exciting month. Fall Conference was held October 910 in Louisville. It was wonderful to see those of you who were able to attend. We have so many terrific chairmen with great ideas for this year. Be sure to read their bulletins. On October 16 and 17 I attended Red, White, and Blue Days in Martin. What a good time! Commander Schutz and I participated in the parade, attended the flag raising ceremony, and the Veterans Memorial Dinner. On the 18 we went to Jenkins for the District 10 meeting. On October 26 I was invited to a meeting at the new VA nursing home in Radcliff with state officials and members of other veterans' service organizations. What a beautiful facility that is going to be. Israel Ray, the administrator, will be a speaker at Winter Conference. You won't want to miss that. Keep up the good work with membership. Let's push hard to make our goals. We are so close, and I have faith that we can reach them. November will be hectic for most of us. I wish each of you a happy and blessed Thanksgiving. Try not to stress over it. Relax, enjoy family, and remember how lucky we are to live in America the beautiful, home of the brave. Historian

I would like to thank each of you for entrusting me with the duties of Department Historian.  I will do my

very best to make you all proud, telling Kentucky’s story in a way that represents all of our hard work.  I

would also like to apologize for this being my first bulletin.  The National Historian’s Plan of Action was

just published in October.  I did not want to start anyone down a path that would change if the program

drastically changed.

Many facets of the program remain the same.  I do hope each of you are working on writing your

histories.  They should begin with your election of officers.  I would like to be able to write our history as

we go so if I have questions there is opportunities to ask you for clarification.  As such, this is my

request.  Monthly could you send me what your unit has done; who participated, etc.?  If you have

special visitors, please let me know that.  What happened and where did your district meeting occur?

Did you have special guests and what did you do?  This gives me the opportunity to tell all of Kentucky’s

story.  If you present at a conference or convention, please give me a copy of that.  I would love to have

your newsletters and any other information you want to give.  Since I would like a mid‐year report by

December 15th, you can do all the first half of your year with it then start in January doing the other way

if you prefer.

Get your juniors involved as you participate in the Veteran’s History Project and the Members

Remembers History Project.  Both involve speaking with people they may not normally speak with.

Have them talk with Veterans and record their time with them.  The Members Remembers project

allows them to talk with members who have been a part of our organization for a long time.  Have them

video record the interviews as they travel down memory lane and then post them to the internet.

New this year on the National level is the History Committee.  This allows the Historian and the

Cavalcade of Memories Committee to work together.  The historian is a member of this committee.

What better way to preserve our memories than with a visual history from cavalcades coupled with

written history from the historian?

In the next bulletin I will include the rules for creating your history books.  I look forward to working with

each of you.  Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.  The best method is

via email then cell phone.

HOW TO RECORD AND POST TO “MEMBERS REMEMBER” Committee:

National Historian Submitted by: Debra Noble, National Historian Cathi Taylor, National History Committee Chairman Contact Information for Questions: [email protected] or National Historian (See Plan of Action for contact information) Objective: Record the ALA’s history through the eyes of its members Background Information The history of the American Legion Auxiliary begins back In November 1919 and continues with you. The Organization’s history, like any other history, is more than names and dates. It is about its membership and how it developed the ALA’s programs and projects to fulfill our mission of serving the veterans, service members, and their families who sacrifice much for this country of ours. A written history can only tell so much. However, when an organization’s history is told through the eyes of its membership, everyone learns a great deal more about who we are, what we do, and why we matter. Step-by-Step Instructions Here are some tips: This is a two-person project so find someone to assist. This is a good time to enlist the help of

your junior members and/or college students due to their experience with technology. Find long time members of the Auxiliary and ask them to share their stories in a video. These

stories can be about:

a special project,

a particular highlight during her membership

how many generations of her family have been members and why

if a chartered member, her experience in starting the unit Find a location where it is quiet and where there will be no interruptions Record with iPhones/Smartphones. Please keep in mind that your video file must be either a

.mov; .avi; .mpeg; or a .wmv file extension Each recording should be no longer than five (5) minutes in length. You may make more than

one. Cover one topic in each video. Post the video on YouTube. An instructional video on how to upload is located at

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O7iUiftbKU.

Go to YouTube at https://www.youtube.com

Give the video the following title: ALA Dept. of __ (two letter abbreviation for your state) Unit ____ Members Remember.

Provide a description and tags that will help people locate the files easily. These will make it easier for others to locate the videos.

Department of Kentucky Bulletin November 2015

The Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF) is a national grant assistance

program that provides temporary emergency help to eligible members

of the American Legion Auxiliary who have suffered a significant

financial setback as the result of an act of nature or other personal

crisis.

The Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF), established in 1969, was made

possible by a generous legacy gift from Helen Colby Small of

Burlington, WI. Funding for AEF grants comes from generous

contributions from units and members, and can be awarded to

members who have exhausted all other personal and community

resources due to financial hardship, natural disaster or the need for

competitive job skill education.

National Chairman Beth McGinn, Department of Delaware and the

Southern Division AEF chairman is our own Lana Goley. At the

Conferences and conventions, I will have a ½ and ½ raffle and feed the

piggy bank again. Please come and participate. I will also have

brochures explaining the program and applications. I will need a mid

year report to me no later than December 1, 2015, all I need is a short

narrative explaining if your unit participates in the AEF program and

what money that they have donated so far. Each Unit that attends the

conferences and conventions can report that they participated in the

½ and ½ raffles and feed the piggy. My address is:

[email protected] 305 Good Hope Cemetery Rd., Oak Grove, KY 42262

The purpose of the Leadership program is to develop and prepare knowledgeable and capable leaders at all levels; grows membership and mentors of all ages. We can develop future leaders by mentoring and attending workshops to learn about tools and resources that are available on www.ALAforVeterans.org under the leadership section (Leadership Course). There are courses for senior and junior members. I will have citations for all members that take the course; you must mail me the answer sheet with your name and unit to get credit. Nancy Moses and I will have a Leadership/Membership Workshop on Saturday, Nov. 14th from 11-2 at Fort Campbell Post 233, 14633 Ft. Campbell Blvd., Oak Grove, KY 42262. Hope to see you there! To be a knowledgeable leader in our organization, it is important to be familiar with our history, unit guidebook (knowledge of programs), constitution & bylaws, and Roberts Rules of Order. Most importantly, remember these tips for effective leadership when interacting with others: Do Not Interrupt, Listen, Respect Others, Practice Kindness, Generosity and Gratitude, Pay Attention, Be Civil, Keep Your Cool, Say Thank You, Think Positively, Promote Decency and DISCUSS IN PRIVATE AND PRAISE IN PUBLIC. At State Convention, I will present trophies for best overall senior and junior Leadership programs. Mid-Year report is due December 1, 2015. Year End is due to me on May 1, 2016. Leadership Reporting: As part of your narrative report, please include answers to the following questions: • How many unit and/or department trainings did your department hold? • Total number of members attending all of these trainings? • What topics or presentations were included in your trainings? • Did you hold training on nurturing a culture of goodwill? MEMBERSHIP NOVEMBER BULLETIN

"Keeping the Promise" - National Theme "Marching Towards Increased Membership Heights" - Dept Theme

We have started out with a bang and the momentum is continuing. 38% of our Units have met the November 11th promise date of 45% membership. Woo-hoo!!!! If you have a small unit and haven't submitted membership, even 10 members count toward our goal. Large units, encourage your members to submit their dues early and have a drawing for a prize. Let your members know that for every new member and gift membership they obtain they get a ticket for drawings for Pandora bracelets with an American flag charm or $100. Two separate drawings, one for new members and one for gift memberships. So if you have 7 new members and they are all gift memberships, then 7 tickets for one drawing and 7 tickets for the other drawing. This will be drawn at June Convention. (Form attached) Make sure you like our Dept. of Kentucky Membership Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/alakymembership where you can visit for contests, membership resources and status updates. Please like this page and share with others so we can spread the good work of the Auxiliary. Lisa Norvall won a prize for posting pictures of the October Conference. Post 20 channeled their inner Rosie Riveter by hosting some Veterans from the Fort Thomas VA and one of their members dressed like Rosie. (Sounds like a prize opportunity to me). Share events with the membership page of your Veterans events and your Unit channeling their inner Rosie or if you don't have a Facebook, send me a picture and a short summary of what your Unit is doing to 2188 Treetop Lane, Hebron, Ky, 41048 for a chance to win a prize. Check out our fabulous newly designed Membership webpage at http://kyamlegionaux.org/membership/. Resources available are the bulletins, the New Member kit, Unit, District and Department membership standings, ALAMIS links, and more! Paula McGowan is our webmaster and she has rocked our entire Dept. of Kentucky webpage with a fresh new look. Thank her for all she does when you see her! November 11th is the next Promise Date and it is for 45% by October 12th for our Unit and Department promise "I promise to thank a veteran for their service to our country". Wearing an Honor Their Service button is a great way to recognize the veteran whom you are eligible. At Conference I snapped a picture of some hardcopy photos and sent the photo to [email protected] with the name of the member submitting the form. That way when the form and money is sent it is paired up and the button is made and sent to the member. I am available at all Conferences to do this for you. At Veterans Day events, make sure you wear your Auxiliary shirts and pins and talk about how great our organization is. Hand out brochures to encourage people to join. December 7th Promise Date is 60% and it is "I promise to honor those who gave their lives to save ours". A great time to give the gift of membership for Christmas presents. We can do this. 100% membership was obtained under Sara Robey's president term. To all the Unit Membership Chairmen - your Unit can sign up for online membership submission. For clarification, you cannot pay your Unit members dues online, you can change addresses or make name changes but you must send your dues to Department. Each individual member can pay their dues online when they create an online account by going to alaforveterans.org and clicking on "Sign Up if you don't have an account" on the right-hand side of the homepage. To all Unit Presidents - assessments are due as of December 31, 2015. $30 plus .15 per senior member and .25 per past president on your membership roster. A Membership narrative is due to me by December 15th describing what your Unit is doing to attract and retain members. Posting on the Membership Facebook page counts as well. Certificates will be given for Units that submit a narrative. Keep on rocking and marching Rosie's!!!!
