Storyboard

A storyboard is a visual interpretation of what will be filmed in a production

GTA V’s script had over 3000 pages. This would of been given to PEGI. When PEGI would of got this script, they would of used this chart to mark it

You are required by law to make a script and hand it in, so it can be edited and be given an age

Page 6: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Storyboard

When I was making my Snickers advert. Making a storyboard was very helpful

One reason why it was helpful was because it gave me an idea of how many shots time I’m using

When I was drawing one scene, sometimes it gave me an idea for the next scene

The storyboard was also very helpful when it came to the actual filming of the ad. Makes me remember what is needed to be filmed next

Page 7: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

StoryboardA professional storyboard of an episode of the Simpsons.

A storyboard that I have made for my Snickers advert

Page 8: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Storyboard Strengths

Can be very good for generating ideas

Very helpful when it comes to filming the advert

There’s loads of storyboard styles.

Page 9: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Storyboard WeaknessesEven though the art isn’t the most important bit. If you struggle to draw, people won’t know what the shot will have

You need to include a certain amount of detail in each shot

Storyboards can be massive, have around 30-40 pages.

Page 10: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Storyboard

I’m not a fan of making storyboardsFirst reason is because I’m not that good at drawing. In both my Snickers and my Marmite advert, both sets of drawings lacked detail

The second reason why I don’t like storyboards is because if you delete one scene, you might have to redo the entire storyboard

Page 11: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Shot List

A shot list is effectively a log of every shot that will be used in your production

The main point of a shot list is to give your production a proper sense of direction and efficiency

Page 12: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Shot List

When I was making a Shot List for my advert. I considered a couple of things

It made me consider how many of each shots I had, at first I realised I mainly had loads of medium shots, but not many others

Page 13: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Shot List

This is a shot list that I found onlineYou could also make a shot list and attach the storyboard to it

Page 14: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Shot List

On the left is a shot list that I made for my Snickers advert. There was 5 rows in my one

Page 15: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Shot List Strengths

The shot list is the bringing together of 2 pieces of information, script and storyboard, stores 2 pieces of info in 1 place

Can be helpful when it comes to summing up information

Page 16: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Shot List Weaknesses

It can be hard to predict the duration of a shot

Can be tough to make

Page 17: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Shot List

I don’t have a problem with making shot lists.

The first reason why I don’t have a problem with them is because there are putting 2 pieces of info into 1

Page 18: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Shooting Script

A shooting script is where you combine the shot list with the script

The main point of a shooting script is that it breaks down the information of each relevant shot

Page 19: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Shooting ScriptThis is what a shooting script usually looks like

Meanwhile, here is a shooting script me and my friends did for a Marmite advert

Page 20: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Shooting Script Strengths

A place that holds both the shot list and the script

There are loads of different templates to making a shooting script

Page 21: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Shooting Script Weaknesses

They can hold loads of information

You must include every single detail of the shot in it

Page 22: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Shooting Script

I don’t have a problem with making shooting scripts because it is basically transporting 2 sets of information to the same place

Page 23: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Script The script is basically the tv show, the movie or the advert on a sheet of paper

Scripts contains dialogue, stage directions etc.

The official font for scripts are Courier New

Page 24: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Page 25: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Script This is the script of the 872nd Eastenders episode, it contains 63 pages

This is a script I’ve made for my Snickers advert, it is 3 pages

Page 26: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Script Strengths

They are easy to make

Page 27: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Script WeaknessesScripts can be absolutely massive. It is rumoured the script of GTA V contains 3500 pages.

Also that Eastenders script contained 63 pages, they have done 5041, so if every episode had 63 pages, they would have produced 317,583 pages worth of scripts

Page 28: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Script

Scripts are very helpful when it comes to making the advert

The reason why is because they contain all of the lines to the movie, the advert, the script.

Gantt Chart

A gantt chart is a schedule of how long it should take to produce an advert.

The gantt chart covers everything from pre-production, to the filming, to the editing of the production.

Gantt charts are seriously important, some people don’t realise the importance of them.

The reason why they're so important is because they are basically a timetable of when we should focus on a specific part of pre-production

Page 31: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Gantt Chart

Below is a professional Gantt chart Below is the Gantt chart for my Snickers advert

Page 32: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Gantt Chart Strengths

If you make this online, you can store links to your documents

Helps when it comes to time-keeping

Gantt charts are a way of demonstrating that you know what you’re doing

Place it somewhere everyone can see it, so people can see your progress

Page 33: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Gantt Chart Weaknesses

They’re not the easiest thing to make

Gantt charts need to be updated constantly

Gantt charts can be massive, they could represent time over a couple of months, maybe a year

Page 34: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Gantt Chart

I enjoy making and looking at gantt charts

The reason why is because they can be represent progress with a project

A 2nd reason why I like gantt charts is because it gives me an insight into how long it will take to make a tv advert

Page 35: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Finance

Page 36: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

BudgetThe budget is the calculation of how it will cost to make an advert, tv show or movie

The budget includes everything wrong renting a camera to the price of an editing suite

Once you have compiled the budget, you need to work out the contingency fund

The contingency fund is 10% of what the budget is, so lets say the budget is £2000, the contingency fund would be £200, so the overall budget would be £2200

The contingency fund is backup money

Page 37: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

BudgetHere is an example budget, it contains everything from scriptwrite, to camera hire

This is a budget that I made for my Marmite advert, note the contingency fund at the bottom

Page 38: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Budget Strengths

Easy to make

If you make them online, you can put a hyperlink to where you are getting the specific equipment

Page 39: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Budget Weaknesses

It can be time-consuming to make

Can be tough to find certain equipment

You need to look on multiple websites for all equipment, to make sure you get the right deal

Page 40: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Budget Weaknesses

I enjoy assembling the budget because it involves using maths, which I enjoy doing

Page 41: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Call Sheet A call sheet is basically a contact book, that holds the contact information for all the actors, production crew etc.

Call sheets are very helpful because if there is a cancellation of filming for any reason, they can contact the cew

Page 43: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Call Sheet

On the left is a call sheet from the James Bond movie Quantum of solace

This call sheet was used to know which actors and crew had their vaccinations before they filmed the climax of the movie at the ESO Hotel, which is right in the middle of the desert

Page 44: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Call Sheet

Here is a call sheet that was made for my Snickers advert. Obviously the Mobile numbers wouldn’t be censored in the real one

Page 45: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Call Sheet Strengths

Makes it easy to contact members of the crew

It designates everyone's specific role

Page 46: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Call Sheet Weaknesses

The information is confidential, it contains private information, phone numbers, email addresses, so it has to be kept secret

Call sheets can be massive

If there is one mistake, you might have to type out the entire thing again, all of it

Page 47: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Call SheetI don’t enjoy making call sheets because they can truly be massive, also all it really is writing down email addresses and phone numbers

I also don’t like the pressure of it because 1 mistake could mean you have to retype all of it

Page 48: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Location Release

The location release is a form where you give consent for production to occur on your premises.

You need a signature from both the owner of the location and the head of the production company

Obviously you are required by law to get this done, this is because this is permission to film on the site

Page 49: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Location ReleaseBelow is what a location release usually looks like This is the location release for my Snickers

advert

Page 50: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Location Release Strengths

Gives you the right to film at a specific location

Page 51: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Location Release Weaknesses

You can’t film if you don’t have permission to film there

Page 52: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Location Release

I don’t enjoy getting these location releases signed

The reason why is because you need to chase the person up just to get there signature

Page 53: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Actor Release

The actor release is a written consent to film someone for an advert or tv show

Obviously you need to provide an actor release by law, the reason why is because it is a sheet of paper declaring that he/she is allowed to be filmed

You need to get an actor release for every actor

Page 54: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Actor ReleaseThis is what an actor release looks like

Page 55: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Actor Release Strengths

Gives you entitlement to use someone in a production

Gives you entitlement to use someone in a production

Page 56: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Actor Release Weaknesses

You can’t someone in your advert if they haven't signed the permission form

Actors under 18 needed to be signed for by their parent/carer.

Page 57: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Actor Release

I don’t enjoy assembling these actor releases because I usually have to chase people up to get them

Page 58: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Location Recce

A location recce is a recon of an area where filming is going to take place.

Crew:Location ManagerAssistant Location ManagerLocation ScoutLocation Researcher/CoordinatorLocation AssistantLocation Production AssistantParking Coordinator

Location recces need to be provided because the crew need to know what the area they’re filming in is like

Locations recces are the main way that information is gathered for a risk assessment.

Page 60: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Location Recce

This is a location recce I found onlineThis is a location recce which I made for my Snickers advert

Page 61: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Location Recce Strengths

Gives the crew an insight into what the area is like.

Loads of different layouts to make one, you can make them in a table or as a written report, you can include pictures

A location recce makes the risk assessment a lot more easier because you would of already found out the risks

Page 62: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Location Recce Weaknesses

You should include images to back up your findings

Everything you collect in the location recce can be made irrelevant by the weather

You are required by law to assemble one, if you don’t provide one, the production can not continue

Page 63: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Location Recce

I enjoy compiling location recces, because they involve stuff they taking pictures

However you need to collect a lot of information for a location recce, you need to collect a description of the area, risks etc.

Page 64: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Overhead Diagram

Overhead diagrams is a birds-eye of where an advert or tv show is going to be filmed

The main point of the overhead diagram is to show the actor, camera movement from the sky

There is a key for an overhead diagram

This is the way of representing the camera, the triangle is the direction of the lens

This is the way of representing the character

Page 65: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Overhead Diagram

You can make an overhead diagram in Photoshop, Illustrator or you can draw it

This is an overhead diagram that I made for my Snickers advert

Page 66: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Overhead Diagram Strengths

There are loads of ways to make an overhead diagram

Shows the camera-man how much he will be moving

Page 67: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Overhead Diagram Strengths

You need to create an overhead diagram for every location, you could end up with a massive amount

They can be tough to understand

The more camera shots there are, the more complicated it will be to understand it

Page 68: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Overhead Diagram

I don’t enjoy making overhead diagrams because they are tough to make and they can be confusing to read

Code Of Practice/Regulations

Page 70: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Risk Assessment

A risk assessment is where all the risks of a production are stored and evaluated

Risk assessments are important for everyone in the production, so they know what risks they will face in this production whether it is a production crew member or an actor

Risks can be anything from tripping over production equipment, to injuries which can be caused by the weather

Risk assessments have to provided by law. The reason why is because people need to be aware of what risks they might face during the production.

Page 71: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Risk Assessment

Here is a template for a risk assessment that I found online

Below is a risk assessment that I made for my Snickers advert

Page 72: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Risk Assessment StrengthsMakes the team aware of what risks they might encounter whilst making an advert, or filming a tv show

If you are making the risk assessment online [i.e. Google Docs] you can have hyperlinks to the images that you took in Location Recce, once again to back up your findings

Page 73: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Risk Assessment WeaknessesRisk assessments vary in size, they can be massive, they can be small, depends on how many risks there are

You need to include every single risk, even the smallest things can generate big problems

If you don’t hand over a risk assessment, production can’t continue

Page 74: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Risk Assessment I’m not a fan of making risk assessments because it makes me think how many risk there are for this production

Page 75: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Post Production

Page 76: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Footage Log

The footage log is where you log every single bit of footage that you have filmed

The company might want to see a footage log, just so they can see how much you have used the camera you have borrowed from them

Page 77: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Footage Log

You can create footage logs on Excel I created mine on Word for my Snickers advert

Page 78: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Footage Log Strengths

A way of knowing how much filming you have done

You can look at the log when looking for a specifc clip

Page 79: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Footage Log Weaknesses

They can be massive

You need to put down loads of information

Page 80: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Footage Log

I liked making a footage log because it makes it so much simpler to find a specific scene when it comes to assembling the advert

Page 81: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Asset Log

Asset logs is a log where you put footage that you are going to use that isn’t yours

Asset logs can included anything from pictures to songs, to videos collected off of Youtube

You need to provide an Asset log so the producers know which footage isn’t yours

Page 82: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Asset Log

This is an Asset log that I found onlineHere is an Asset log for my Snickers advert

Page 83: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Asset Log StrengthsMakes people aware of what footage you're ‘borrowing’

Makes you remember what footage isn’t yours

Page 84: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Asset Log WeaknessesNeed to include everything you have taken from the net, even if it is just an image

Page 85: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

Asset Log

I don’t mind making asset logs, after it is just noting what footage isn’t yours

Page 86: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

EDL [Edit Decision List]

The EDL is basically a time log of every scene in a sequence

EDL’s aren't really needed anymore thanks to new tech, however back in the day, they were very popular

Page 87: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

EDL [Edit Decision List]

This is what EDL’s use to look likeThis is my EDL for my Snickers advert

Page 88: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

EDL [Edit Decision List] Strengths

Edit decision lists make it easy to know how long each specific scene is in the sequence

If you have the appropriate technology, the EDL can be very easy

Page 89: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

EDL [Edit Decision List] Weaknesses

They can have loads of information

Page 90: Hello. Welcome to my presentation about Pre-production tools

EDL [Edit Decision List]I like making the Edit decision list, the main reason why is because it actually makes the editing of the production rather simple

However one annoying thing about them, is that if you cut down one scene, every number will change
