signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing

and keep looking as you cross. Put electronic devices down and keep heads

up and walk, don’t run, across the street. Teach children to make eye contact with

drivers before crossing in front of them. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there

are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.

Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

Trick or Treat With an Adult Children under the age of 12 should not be

alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.

tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.

Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can ob-struct a child’s vision.

When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

Excerpts from the National Institute of Mental Health. Visit their website for more information.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hy-peractivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. Inattention means a person wanders off task,

lacks persistence, has difficulty sustaining fo-cus, and is disorganized; and these problems are not due to defiance or lack of comprehen-sion.

Hyperactivity means a person seems to move about constantly, including in situations in which it is not appropriate; or excessively fidg-ets, taps, or talks. In adults, it may be extreme restlessness or wearing others out with con-stant activity.

Impulsivity means a person makes hasty ac-tions that occur in the moment without first thinking about them and that may have high potential for harm; or a desire for immediate rewards or inability to delay gratification. An impulsive person may be socially intrusive and excessively interrupt others or make important decisions without considering the long-term consequences.

Inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity are the key behaviors of ADHD. Some peo-ple with ADHD only have problems with one of the behaviors, while others have both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. Most children have the com-bined type of ADHD. In preschool, the most common ADHD symptom is hyperac-tivity.

It is normal to have some inattention, unfo-cused motor activity and impulsivity, but for people with ADHD, these behaviors are more severe; occur more often; and inter-fere with or reduce the quality of how they functions socially, at school, or in a job. While there is no cure for ADHD, currently available treatments can help reduce symptoms and improve functioning. Treat-ments include medication, psychotherapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments. Resources: CHADD: The National Resource of ADHD Online Workshop: 5 Solutions to Common

EFMP FAQ: CoL

OCTOBER is ADHD

Awareness Month

Q: What is Continuation on Location?

A: Continuation on Location (CoL) refers to the stabilization of the family and does not require the Marine to remain in a geographic location. CoL allows the family to remain in the location of the last fully funded PCS as-signment, while the Marine accepts assign-ment at a new duty station. In all cases, ef-forts will be made to maintain the family unit. CoL decisions are made to facilitate the con-tinuum of care for enrolled families.
