The Herberger Theater Center has undergone major renovations over the summer as a result of the 2006 voter-approved bond. The new look of the theater will be unveiled to the public during the grand re-opening Grand Re-Opening Weekend on October 1 & 2, 2010.
The most dramatic change in the lobby will be the addition of a new lighting feature in the center of the rotunda. The lights are individually suspended glass balls with LEDs in each one to create sparkle inside and outside the lobby. Another change will be the creation of a new second floor Gallery Lounge located off of the existing art gallery space called The Bob’s Spot Gallery Lounge, named for the late Bob Herberger, whose finan-cial support was critical in getting the Herberger Theater built.
The black box theater, currently the home of Lunch Time Theater, will get a new entrance that will provide
shade for patrons and backlit translu-cent panels to help enliven the space. The space has been renamed The Kax Stage, in honor of the late Katherine “Kax” Herberger.
Be the first to see the theater at the
Grand Re-Opening Celebration on Friday, October 1, 6:30pm. The event will feature entertainment by Bad Cactus Brass Band and Dennis Row-land and the Jazz Experience, cuisine, re-dedication ceremony, raffle and tours of the theater. Tickets are $100
per person. Presenting sponsor is D.L. Withers.
The inaugural Herberger Theater Fes-tival of the Arts is Saturday, October 2, 10am-6pm. The festival will fea-ture theater and dance performances from more than 25 Valley arts groups, food, artists, live music, film festival shorts by the Phoenix Film Founda-tion and an interactive children’s activity area. SRP is the title sponsor of this year’s festival. Admission is free for kids age 12 and under and $5.00 for age 13 and up. Free parking for attendees at the Arizona Center’s parking garage.
Built in 1989, the Herberger Theater Center is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support and foster the growth of the performing arts in Phoenix as the premier per-formance venue, arts incubator and advocate. Scarlett Johansson is in talks with Marvel Studios to reprise her Black Widow character from “Iron Man 2” in a solo spin-off film. However, Johansson will first reappear as the character in “The Avengers,” slated for release summer 2012.
Production will begin next year on “Reincarnate,” M. Night Shyama-lan’s successor to “Devil” under his Night Chronicles banner. “The Last Exorcism’s” Daniel Stamm will direct “Buried’s” Chris Sparling’s screenplay about a jury haunted by supernatural forces.
Be among the first to get the latest scoop from Joseph J. Airdo at Examiner.com, where you can also find out how to “de-mand” that Phoenix win a free advanced screening of “Paranormal Activity 2.”
‘Buried’ Frightfully psy-chologically disturbing…
Interview/Review by Stan Robinson
I can’t remember a movie that when it ends, I just sat in my seat, stunned and overwhelmed with feelings of ex-treme anxiety. Three factors needed to be in place: a very good script, a director with vision, and an actor who can deliver a ‘tour de force’ perfor-mance. ‘Buried’ is that movie…
Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) is a U.S. contractor, a truck driver working in Iraq. After his convey is attack by a group of Iraqis, he wakes to find he’s buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone, it’s a race against time to escape this claustro-phobic death trap.
I learned early on in film school that the basis for a movie starts with the ‘printed word’. Our professor’s favor-ite line ‘If it isn’t on the page, it won’t be on the screen’, takes me to Chris Sparling, the screenplay writer for ‘Buried’. One can write a story with the key factors of locations, actors, and a projected budget as perimeters.
Chris answered my question with a chuckle! “I wish I could say it was creative, it was actually more finan-cial. I tried to come up with the most contained story I could possibly tell, in addition to being one that involved as few actors and locations as pos-sible. Once I had the basic concept of being buried alive as the premise, I didn’t want to go the horror route. After researching the dangers so many civilian contractors are facing in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the unimaginable conditions those of them who are kidnapped endure, I knew right away I had the base for my story.”
The next aspect is the director’s vi-sion of the printed words. “Rodrigo (Cortes) and I talked a lot! Having directed a few projects myself, I really got keen insight as he talked about shots to create the claustrophobic feeling of being inside a coffin. He really had a firm cinematic vision on wanting to psychologically put view-ers inside that box!”
In the title role with more than 95% of the scenes inside the coffin, actor Ryan Reynolds delivers a wide range of emotions that are riveting. Not since “Sleuth” with Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine (1972) and the re-imaging with Michael Caine and Jude Law (2007), which featured only two actors for the whole movie, has there been such a compelling performance. There’s more with screenplay writer Chris Sparling and ‘Buried’ at www.ScreenScene.org 5 of 5 stars
Starring Ryan Reynolds, José Luis García Pérez, Robert Paterson, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Samantha Mathis.
Directed by Rodrigo Cortés, written by Chris Sparling. Lionsgate release. Rated R for language and some vio-lent content. Runtime: 95 minutes.
‘Frozen’ A spine-chilling Sophie’s choice
By Joseph J. Airdo
If one ever finds himself stranded on a ski chairlift, the correct course of ac-tion is to first remove one’s ski boots and then jump to the ground, break-ing one’s ankles in the process.
“If you break your ankles, you can still pull yourself down the moun-tain,” explains Adam Green, writer and director of “Frozen,” a psycho-logical thriller that made its DVD debut this week. “If you jump with your boots on, it’s going to straighten your legs out … and you’re going to compound fracture your legs.”
In “Frozen,” Kevin Zegers, Shawn Ashmore, and Emma Bell star as three snowboarders who get stranded on a ski chairlift taking them to the last run of the day. Once frostbite and hypothermia begin to set in, the snowboarders come to terms with the fact that they must take desperate measures if they want to have any chance of escaping the snowy moun-tain with their lives intact.

It is a movie that forces us to weigh our will to survive against our fear to die in the worst ways imaginable. And Green, whose horror flick “Hatchet II” also hits theaters in select cities across the country this weekend, ac-knowledges that the scenario reflects a spine-chilling Sophie’s choice.
“I would just cry and probably freeze to death, to be honest with you,” Green says.

‘Let Me In’ a chilling vampire story
Review by Stan Robinson
Movies and television series featuring story themes of vampires and were-wolves have been prominent the last few years. Admittedly, the only one that has peaked my interest including TV and movies is the television series ‘The Gates’. Why, because the theme encompasses so much more than the younger generations’ characters and ‘teenage angst’.
This retelling of the multiple awards winning Swedish language movie including Best International Film and Best Foreign Language Film catego-ries “Let The Right One In” (2008), which was an adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s book, is a story of innocent love entangled in murder,
mystery, and horror.
A young boy who is frequently bullied by other boys his age, befriends a young girl that moves in next-door and lives in secrecy with her guardian. A slow but firm friendship develops between the two, with the ultimate revelation to the boy, that she is a vampire. After losing her caretaker, she is forced to leave in order to survive…
The two young actors carry the movie. Kodi Smit-McPhee as the boy demonstrated his talent in ‘The Road’ (2009) starring Viggo Mortensen as father and son in a story of survival in an apocalyptic world. ‘The Road’ made my top movies list of 2009. Chloë Grace Moretz as the girl, co-starred with Nicolas Cage in this year’s ‘Kick-Ass’ as his daughter and the young martial arts crime fighter. 4 of 5 stars
Starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, Chloë Grace Moretz, Richard Jenkins, Cara Buono, Elias Koteas, Sasha Barrese, and Jimmy ‘Jax’ Pinchak.
Directed by Matt Reeves; written by Matt Reeves & John Ajvide Lindqvist. Overture Films release. Rated R for strong bloody horror violence, language and a brief sexual situation. Runtime: 115 minutes.

‘A Film Unfinished’ is ultimately finished!
By Stan Robinson
A film about an unfinished film. In 1942, one of the only known films of the people behind and before the camera in the Warsaw Ghetto was shot. Scenes of Jewish life were documented. For decades after World War II, this footage was presented as truth, until 40 years later when a missing reel was discovered, exposing the extent of the cinematic manipula-tion forever changing the way we look at historic images. Now, the opportu-nity to see it in its entirety is here!
Wonder what movies we movie reviewers look forward to in October 2010? There’s Joseph’s ‘Fall Pre-view’, and Stan’s ‘Most Anticipated Movies’! For Joseph J. Airdo’s list visit Examiner.com/Phoenix ~ For Stan Robinson’s list visit ScreenScene.org

Scottsdale International Film Festival Celebrates Ten YearsBy Randy Montgomery
Attending a film festival is a unique experience. You meet others who have a passion for film, are treated to the best in world and independent cinema, plus have the opportunity to discover that true gem that will stick with you for years to come. The Scottsdale International Film Festival is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. A small event that was born in the shadows of 9/11, has grown into a well respected and well attended fes-tival. “Ten years ago, I seriously ques-tioned whether it would last more than a year, it was a true experiment. I have taken it one day at a time. Here I am ten years later,” says founder and festival director Amy Ettinger.
What has made the festival stand the test of time and made fans come back year after year? “An eye on quality,” says Ettinger. “The quality of films, the quality of the experience and the quality of the vendors and partners. The community responds favorably.” Each year the festival receives hun-dreds of submissions from filmmakers and studios around the world hoping to get their film showcased during the five day event. Ettinger, along with a panel of volunteers screen the films looking for the best. They look for “…an interesting story, told well.” Diversity is the key. This year there
are a number of Oscar® contenders, Arizona premieres, action films and selections from Mexico, France and beyond. Ettinger adds, “At the end of each festival, I want the audience to say ‘that was pretty eclectic.’” While many patrons spend the entire weekend taking in numerous movies, there are still those that are new to the festival scene. To those folks, Et-tinger says, “All I ask is to commit to see a film. Just one.” From past experi-ence, those that attend and purchase a single ticket end up staying for other selections and become loyal fans. You never know what you may see. As Ettinger explains, “There are a lot of films screening this year that may be a while before they make it back to the states.” Many of the selections may never make it back to the market, while others are being remade by Hol-lywood to be screened at your local multiplex.
While Twilight was making millions, another series of films based on popular novels was creating an equal amount of buzz at the indie box office; The Millennium Trilogy. The Swedish films based on the books by author Steig Larsson released internationally to critical acclaim and audience buzz. Here in the U.S., the first two films were equally well received. The much anticipated third and final installment The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest will open the 10th Annual Scottsdale International Film Festival Friday, October 1 at Scottsdale Center for the Arts. The festival will continue Saturday, October 2 through Tuesday, October 5 at Harkins Camelview 5. The festival will close with the Hillary Swank/Sam Rockwell indie Conviction Tuesday night. A remake of the Millen-nium films is in the works with Daniel Craig. See the original at the festival.

“A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET”You can’t keep a good movie villain down, especially if he has memorable appliances such asthe knife-like fingernails of Freddy Krueger, the fiend of many unfortunate teenagers’ dreams.Jackie Earle Haley (“Watchmen”) inherits the part from Robert Englund in this often graphic –but only moderately effective – reboot of the original thriller, with Rooney Mara (who will star inthe Americanization of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) as Freddy’s main target. DVD extra:“making-of” documentary. ›› (R: AS, P, GV) (Also on Blu-ray)
“BASEBALL: THE TENTH INNING”Rarely does an existing documentary get an update, but genre titan KenBurns has done that – in collaboration with filmmaking partner Lynn Novick– by adding an additional chapter to his ode to the sport. Hitting video theweek after its television debut on PBS, it covers relevant events that havetranspired from the 1990s to now, one of the most notable being thebreaking of the alleged Boston Red Sox curse that enabled the team tobecome World Series champions. Joe Torre, Bud Selig, Bob Costas andKeith Olbermann are among those who offer comments. DVD extras:deleted scenes; additional interviews. ››› (Not rated: P) (Also on Blu-ray)“THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FIRST SEQUENCE)”Properly reputed as one of the most disturbing horror movies of recenttimes, writer-director Tom Six’s melodrama got plenty of word-of-mouth onthe film-festival circuit. It lands two stranded college coeds (Ashley C.Williams, Ashlynn Yennie) in the lair of a former surgeon (the wonderfullynamed Dieter Laser) who is conducting a secret, cringe-inducingexperiment. He wants to physically link several people to create a literalhuman centipede, and the young women are the latest candidates to ... er,“join.” DVD extras: theatrical trailer; “making-of” documentary; audiocommentary by Six; deleted scene; alternate posters. ››› (Not rated: AS,P, GV) (Also on Blu-ray)“SPLICE”Messing around with science or nature always is dicey, as the charactersplayed by Oscar winner Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”) and Sarah Polley(“The Sweet Hereafter”) discover anew in this thriller. They play scientistswho combine DNA taken from different animals with human genes todevelop a new life form – and when the resulting creature (DelphineChaneac) takes a shine to her male creator, it’s trouble time. Solid actinghelps overcome too-familiar conventions of the genre here. ›› (R: AS, N,P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)

You call yourself a dog lover, butyou’re not allowing them to be dogs, becausethey’re always in a bag. Hurting a dog is notjust fighting him; it’s denying him the abilityto just be a dog.”

Jake Weber stars as Joe Dubois, whose wife communicates with the dead to help Phoenix police solve crimes, in “Medium” Fridays on CBS.
Tony Danza may be the most earnest man on television. He’s also fun, enthusiastic and determined, all evident in A&E
Network’s documentary series “Teach: Tony Danza,” airingFridays.
Danza’s intentions are noble. He can “smell 60” and wanted todo something worthwhile, so he taught for a year.
This show raises many questions, especially: Is desire to teachenough? And are there limits to reality?
“This was respectful reality,” he says. “That’s alliteration, by the way.”It’s that cocky and funny attitude that makes Danza so likable. Still,
the kids are on camera, which must compromise learning, yet they seemcompletely oblivious to cameras. Danza acts the same whether he’s infront of a class or with one reporter: He talks animatedly and a lot.
He’s trying so hard his sincerity is palpable. But can his greatintentions trump the fact that he’s not certified?
Philadelphia’s Northeast High School, where 3,500 students speak57 different languages, got around the certification problem byteaming him with a master teacher. Still, it’s Danza in front of the10th-grade English class, tap-dancing (literally), explaining what aprotagonist is and sometimes getting shown up by smart kids. It’salso Danza encouraging them: “Make the best of a bad situation.”

A year ago, Ben Rappaport was carrying trays of miniburgers and miniquesadillasat Manhattan fashion industry parties. “I was walking up to models and they wouldgive me death looks, like, ‘You think I will eat that?’ ” he says.
He had recently graduated from Juilliard and was a struggling New York actor.Today he’s the lead of NBC’s sitcom “Outsourced,” airing Thursdays.“I can’t wrap my head around it,” he says of his new status. “It’s just absolutely
the right part; it’s that the universe lines up and seems like it was written for me.”Last winter he went on 10 auditions a week while working odd jobs. He had an
off-Broadway play to his credit. Rappaport read the script in the subway on his wayto the audition.
The show is set in a call center in India, which Rappaport’s character, Todd, issent to manage. He was in management trainee school for Mid America Novelties, which sells fake vomit and mistletoe belt buckles. He returnsto an empty office; his boss explains they “right-sized.”Todd’s choice is to move to India or become unemployed.
“A lot of Todd is paying homage to my father,”Rappaport says; his dad works in the plastics industry andtravels around the world as a consultant. “I imagine myfather in India and being in the same situation. He wouldtry really hard, and it felt right.”
Todd does try really hard, and though there is a narrow-minded American as a support character, Todd is respectfulas an expatriate. The show, likely to anger those whoconsider it racist toward Indians, is essentially anoffice comedy, Rappaport says.
“I think people will be surprised as to howrelatable these characters are,” he says. “It is aworkplace comedy, and it is about these characters.”

NFL Football Star and Sophisticated Scottsdale Chef Team Up for a Cookbook That’s Got Game
Given its title, au-thors and content, The Quarterback Killer’s Cookbook surely won’t be confused with the overly precious culinary guides of Martha Stewart. This is a manly man’s cookbook, written for out-doorsmen who’ve got game (so to speak) and would like to prepare something sexier than venison steaks and elk chops.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback and big game hunter Jared Allen teams up with Scottsdale chef Aaron May, who nimbly moves from Spanish tapas at Iruña to hearty guy food at The Lodge to write a game-lover’s cookbook for people who love good food but would rather spend hours in the wild than in the kitchen.
May, who spent childhood summers in the woods of Wisconsin, applies the French cooking techniques he learned as a young chef in Paris to the reci-pes here, asserting, “You use the same skills, experience and knowledge, whether it’s rack of lamb, walleye or venison. What you do with lamb chops, you can do with elk chops or venison. What you do with pork, you can do with wild boar or javelin.” It’s a matter of adaptation and opening the mind to delicious possibilities.
The 100+ page book offers 30 wild game recipes with woodsy fl avor and urban appeal, as well as serious macho tone, thanks to chapter heads such as “Badass Men, Better Meat” and hunting tales, told in Allen’s irreverent style. Cooks and cookbook readers will fi nd straightforward dishes such as fi sh tacos, buffalo meat loaf and steak sauce as well as downright sophisticated recipes, including duck confi t, wild boar ragu with fettuccine, cocoa-crusted venison with coffee sauce, elk Wellington and trout Veracruz. In a nod to The Lodge, (May’s cozy Scottsdale restaurant and bar which evokes the hunting lodges of the northern Midwest), there’s even a recipe for his famous Sas-quatch Burger, the patty fl anked on both sides by grilled cheese sandwiches instead of burger buns.
The Quarterback Killer’s Cookbook (published by Game Day Sports) is avail-able online at www.qbkiller69.com .Hard copies are also being sold at The Lodge, 4422 N. 75th Street, Scottsdale, 480-945-0828. The $16.69 price tag refl ects Allen’s jersey number: 69.

It wasn’t until 1889 that cheese was fi rst added to pizza in Italy, when fa-mous pizza chef Raffaele Esposito made a pizza for Queen Margherita using tomato, basil, and cheese to represent the colors of the Italian fl ag. Today, the simple margherita pizza remains one of the most popular pizzas in the world.

Street and Glendale in Phoenix doesn’t buy in to that concept. With a menu of fantastic sushi (ask for the underground menu) as well as great noodle and rice dishes it sounds like a typical sushi bar. Well they also have a buffalo burger and rib eye steak, and something called an Exit Wound bowl (don’t want to know about that). This is one of the few sushi bars that I have ever seen that have been able to pull of an all you can eat sushi deal (on Saturdays) and actually make it work. And beer, they have great beer. Sure you can usually get a Japanese named beer, but check out the other handles. There is usually something from Avery or Ballast Point on tap. And, on a fairly regular basis, they clear off all taps and put on a selec-tion of amazing beers as part of an event. The events are incredible at Moto. They usually start at 4:00 PM and go on until close, they usually feature at least one rare beer, and they always draw a full house of people enjoying great beer and great company. Located just of Route 51, they are easy to get to, and you will never leave disappointed.
For years TT Roadhouse, located on 68th Street just north of Thomas, was known as a great dive bar. Well new ownership brought on a new at-titude. Don’t worry, its still the same
Roadhouse you’ve always loved, but now with craft beer. Walk in and look anywhere at the bar. You will fi nd a selection of beer that will make you smile and decide its time to settle in for a while. Bell’s Oberon, Ska Modus Hoperandi, Big Sky Moose Drool and a bunch more make this a
fi ne place to relax for an evening, or afternoon, of casual drinking. Shoot some pool, watch a little television or chat up your neighbor at the bar. It’s a comfortable place to have a few beers, and they have an outstanding juke box.
Cave Creek is all cowboy bars and Mexican restaurants, as far as you know. Sure there are a couple of nice wine bars like Brix. But Cave Creek is also home to some fi ne dining… Kevin Binkley has his namesake restaurant in town, and Cartwright’s does pretty well for itself. What locals have discovered is a relative newcomer named Cody’s. Located at Street and Glendale in Phoenix

Hidden GemsWe all know some of the great places to fi nd beer in the Phoenix area. Of course there are all the places that are supposed to have good beer. Places like Papago, Taste of Tops, Sun Devil Liquors and all of the great local breweries. Most of you even know that Whole Foods, Sun-fl ower, Sprouts and AJ’s Fine Foods have great beer selections. You may not know yet that the Whole Foods in Chandler just added about 20 taps to their tasting bar, but you probably will fi nd that out soon.
What about those places you wouldn’t expect to have great beer? How about restaurants where you just wouldn’t expect good beer or that really out of the way place? Are there places like that in Arizona that have great beer? I think you know the answer or we wouldn’t be talking about it here. So let’s take a look at some of these hidden gems.
Everybody knows that sushi de-mands pale lagers, preferably with a Japanese name, even if they are brewed in the United States or in Canada. Moto, located at 16th

2010 Off-Centered Experience
This Saturday the Scottsdale Plaza Resort will host what promises to be the craft-beer enthusiasts “cul-tural event” of the year. This event is organized by the Beer For Brains Foundation and benefi ts the Barrow Brain Tumor Research Center in Phoe-nix. This center is part of the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital which is internationally recognized as a leader in neurological research and patient care. This is the cause....
Here’s how we can help. Come drink some great beer, eat some great food and enjoy some of the top local bands around. Some of the beers that will be available include unique brews from Founders Brewing, Three Floyds and NOLA. Sam Calagione of Dogfi sh Head and honorary chairman of the event will be sending a variety of beers as well as some special aged kegs.
Our own local brewery, SanTan, has promised “something special” for this event. The menu will have a “mid-Atlantic” theme and feature Maryland Crab Cakes, Steamed Shrimp, board-walk fries and funnel cakes. On top of all that, live music will be provided by three top local bands. The Bad Cactus Brass Band is a New Orleans-style second line street jazz band. Gooder, having recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of their fi rst performance,
has a new single out titled “Wasted”. Rounding it out is La La Lush. With a name like that, it was obviously a perfect choice for this event.
Also going on will be raffl es, auctions, indie fi lms and more! All proceeds (less nominal expenses) will be donated to the cause. All workers volunteer their time to The Beer For Brains Foundation who is an organi-zation named and designed by craft beer enthusiasts who are dedicated to enhance awareness, compassion, hope and research for those affl icted with brain cancer.
This wonderful event promises to be extremely entertaining and TONS of FUN! The Off-Centered Experience will be held October 2 at the Scott-sdale Plaza Resort from 5:30PM to 10:30PM. Regular tickets are $75 per person and include access to all beers a hat and your own special drinking glass. The VIP pass at $150 includes regular ticket amenities plus unlim-ited food and more (limit of 100 VIP tickets).
Get your tickets at www.brownpap-ertickets.com. For more information go to www.thebeerforbrainsfounda-tion.org or fi nd them on Facebook.com:The Beer for Brains Foundation. See you there!!!

Cheers to Women and Craft Beer! by Maureen Basenberg
I’m excited to join the AZ Weekly Magazine Family as a writer about women and craft beer. Earlier this year I started AZ Girl’s Pint Out, a women’s beer education group focused on providing social and educational opportunities for women to experience craft beer with friends and make new friends. While the craft beer industry contin-ues to grow, women have yet to feel fully comfortable enjoying a pint with the gals. Pubs are largely a male domain and the basis of under-standing about beer is still largely rooted in mass pro-duced beer ads (this goes for men and women). The goal of AZ Girls’ Pint Out is to build a bridge between women and craft beer and enjoy a pint or two while crossing! It has been my privilege to start the chapter of Girls’ Pint Out in Arizona. Origi-nally founded in Indiana, there are now chapters growing across the coun-try. My motivation to start
the group comes from my own love for craft beer. My husband and I are home brewers and I have travelled all over the world learning about dif-ferent styles of beer. The AZ Girls’ Pint Out column will discuss craft beer from a woman’s perspective, industry news and updates on our upcoming gatherings. Our next event will be volunteer-ing at the Arizona Home Brewer’s Oktoberfest October 23. For more in-formation check AZ Girls’ Pint Out on Facebook or e-mail [email protected]. Cheers!

6032 East Cave Creek Road, this restaurant serves cowboy food with a unique twist…Green Chile Mac and Cheese, Sonoran Crab Cakes and a Barbecue Chicken Salad are a few of their signature items. With entertain-ment regularly including comedy on Wednesday nights and unique musi-cal acts, some of which tour nation-ally, on other nights, Cody’s puts a unique spin on entertainment as well. And owner George Duerr puts on some incredibly unique events as well. Do you notice a “unique” theme here? But we’re here for the beer, so how about that? It’s pretty good by our standards. While not a top notch beer bar, its still a refuge for folks in that part of the Valley to be able to enjoy some great beer with a meal. Look for Papago Orange Blossom, Grand Canyon Amber and Big Sky Trout Slayer on tap, and a decent selection of bottles as well. A hidden gem within this hidden gem are the cans of Grand Canyon Black Iron IPA cans. Check it out before or after the Taste of Cave Creek event on Wednesday or Thursday of this week.
Okay, maybe this one isn’t a hidden gem anymore because they have received a lot of word of mouth about their beer selection but Stogie Cutter still deserves to be on this list just for their approach to offering fi ne cigars and fi ne beer. Tucked into a small strip mall at 833 North Cooper Road in Gilbert, it feels more like a corner tavern than a cigar bar. Ask Richard, the owner, to pair you up with a cigar to go with one of the SanTan beers on tap, or fi nd something with a rich fl avor to go with The Lost Abbey Ten Commandments. If you look care-fully you will see a bottle of Sonoran 200 behind the bar. A snifter of that with a cigar goes mighty fi ne together as well. Always check out the ever changing bottle selection in the cooler to the right of the bar.
Nobody expects to walk into a family chain pizza restaurant and fi nd great beer, but that’s exactly what you get at Mellow Mushroom. A fun environment whether you’re there with the kids or showing up with a group of friends to drink some beer. The bar area is separated from the
dining room but is open and well lit. The menu is full of interesting pizzas, sandwiches and salads. And the beer…well Mellow Mushroom features 40 taps, everything craft and import and all of it good. Abita Purple Haze is one of their best selling handles, but you can fi nd Papago Orange Blossom, Wyder’s Pear Cider, Grand Canyon Pilsner, Left Hand 400 Pound Monkey and on the nitrogen tap, its far from the usual, Left Hand Milk Stout served nice and creamy. Mellow Mushroom also has probably the best selec-tion of canned beer available at any restaurant in Phoenix.
Not too much breaks up the drive to Rocky Point, but you have to slow down as you enter Ajo. Which is okay, because shortly after you enter one of the last towns you go through in Arizona, a little package store called Indulgence appears on the left side of the road. Do yourself a favor, you’ve been driving for a while, take a break, stretch your legs and wander inside. Indulgence has quietly built a very nice selection of craft beer in this remote part of the state. Pick up some bottles of Grand Canyon or some SanTan cans to take with you to Mexico, or ask about some of the specialty bottles that Indulgence accumulates. If Tom is there, make sure you spend some time talking good beer with him because he knows his stuff, and he may have something even more special hidden in the back. It’s always nice to treat yourself to a couple of special beers in between the Tecate and Corona in Rocky Point. If you’re hungry go a little further to Tom’s other place, 100 Estrella, the name is the address, and try a burger with some good beer.
Every few months we should look at some different hidden gems, because after appearing in these pages they may not be hidden anymore. So whether you’re eating sushi, or in the mood for cowboy food or head-ing to Rocky Point, it’s always nice to know that you don’t have to forego craft beer. So now that you know you can enjoy yourself anywhere, get out there and do it.

Max Sports Grille7134 E.Thomas Rd.ScottsdaleThe Offi cial Huskers BarGO BIG RED
Huskers N. Arizona is a group that was started in June of 2009 by three people: former Cornhusker defensive
coach Charlie McBride, Jayne Vipond and Jean Carhart. The intention of this trio was to bring together the numerous Nebraska Cornhusker fans and alumni, give back to the commu-nity, provide a place to cheer on their team plus have A LOT of fun in the process! The owner of Max Sports Grille, Duke is a huge Cornhusker fan and previously owned a “Nebraska bar” in California. When he heard
of the trio’s intentions, he was one of the fi rst to jump on the “BIG RED bandwagon” and offered his sports bar as a home base both for Huskers fans and for the Husker N. Arizona club. With over 40 high-defi nition televisions, a Husker in every chair and “GO BIG RED” in surround sound, Max Sports Grille is a perfect place to call home on Husker game day!
Philadelphia can be a tough town on visiting athletes.Weirdly enough, it can be even tougher on its own.
Philly fans have been known to abuse – both verballyand physically – their own players and coaches, hurlingeverything from idle threats to garbage.
But there’s a new sheriff in town this year as theEagles have moved Kevin Kolb (pronounced “Cobb”)into the starting quarterback position after the tradeof longtime regular Donovan McNabb to theWashington Redskins.
So what makes us think he has any betterchance of garnering respect than former ProBowler McNabb? The fact he hunts wild boarwith little more than a couple of dogs and aBowie knife. That’s right, a Bowie knife. Andwhile we don’t expect a 12-inch blade to deterall of Philly’s angry fans, the thought of Kolbgutting a boar just for fun should slow downmost long enough to give him a fighting chance.
Since joining the Eagles in ’07, Kolb has shownmoments of brilliance. Most notably, last season hebecame the first quarterback in NFL history to throw formore than 300 yards in his first two starts while filling infor an injured McNabb. No doubt those performanceshelped pave the way for McNabb’s departure.
And this season, with a young team surrounding him,Kolb expects to feel the pressure to keep the Eagles in theplayoff hunt. With that said, experts still pick the team towin 10 games thanks to an expected breakout season froma man you might say is dangerously close to a wild boar.

Wonka A Birthday Celebration: W Hotel Fri Oct 1st Mark your calendars for Friday, and prepare yourself to experience The W in Scottsdale like never before. It’s a birthday celebration and they are not holding back. With the theme being Willy Wonka, you can already imagine the elaborate display but also expect the unexpected. Need a place to stay after such a sugar filled night? Oh wait, your already at a hotel and staying gives you the chance to be the lucky winner of the golden ticket! The prize won’t be a chocolate factory but instead some adult goodies, redeem-able for those 21 and over or two tickets to the New Year’s Eve event at W Scottsdale, a complimentary night stay in a suite, or a complimentary cabana with bottle service are just some of the possibilities! This event will ooze with creativity and provide an amplified ambiance, tasty treats, awe-inspiring acrobatics and how can you forget the Oompa Loompas. As Wonka would say, “so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.” 480-970-2100
Sushi Roku turns 2! Sept 27th-Oct 1st Who doesn’t like to celebrate their birthday all week long? That’s what Sushi Roku had in mind when they de-cided to embark on a 5 day celebration starting September 27! The guest of honor will actually be…us. This posh restaurant is generously offering 50% off the entire dinner check, in honor of its two-year anniversary. Tempting and exotic aromas fill the air as you indulge in succulent seafood items such as: yuzu-drizzled octopus, king crab or my favorite, the oysters with uni and caviar. For the less adventur-ous and more traditional taste buds there are more grounded items with a Roku flair. Miso soup and spicy tuna rolls are always a classic favor. After a delightful meal, feel free to ascend the staircase that will lead to the new outdoor bar Red Sun Lounge, which
opens to the public September 27th.
Two venues in one location, offering the best of the best. Don’t be left out and make sure to stop by on or before Oct. 1st to take advantage of the 50% discount on the dinner delicacies ! It’s a celebration! 480-970-2121

It takes an agave plant approximately 8 years to reach a maturity level that makes it suitable for harvesting and using in tequila production.
Mature harvested agave plants can weigh between 80-175 pounds.
Tequila was fi rst imported into the United States in 1873 when the fi rst load was transported to El Paso, Texas. In 1973 tequila sales in the US topped one million cases.

Michael Feinstein is on a mission, and we should thank him. He’s saving a vital part of America – our music. His work, divided between performing familiar favorites
and collecting music, is woven into a three-part documentary, PBS’ “Michael Feinstein’s AmericanSongbook,” beginning Wednesday, Oct. 6 (check local listings). It continues the next two Wednesdays.
Like most people with a guiding passion, Feinstein started young. By 5, he could hear a song and play iton the piano. At 54, rock is a more likely influence, but his tastes run toward Frank Sinatra.
“We are all responsible for preserving our heritage and music,” Feinstein says. “It exists because it is passedon from one person to another. I hope people will have a greater awareness of this music and not throwaway anything that could be valuable to a future generation.”
Wearing jeans, a crisp white shirt and a navy blazer, Feinstein relaxes on the terrace of his Los Angelesmansion, explaining why sheet music and original recordings must be saved. He travels the country, meetingwith the children of musicians, and leaves toting shopping bags of 78s and yellowing sheet music, theephemera that make for a history of song.
All his life, Feinstein has been rifling through dusty stores, thumbing through LPs, then lugging hometreasures to catalog. A center in Carmel, Ind., is under construction to house his collection.
Feinstein’s affinity for these songs led him to the masters. As a young man, he worked for Ira Gershwin.“Everything is a continuum,” he says. “Elvis Costello and Billy Joel have a sense of history and have taken
past music and created something.”This leads to the big question: Just what is the American songbook? Is any American song automatically in
as a birthright?“The songs I consider standards are primarily made up of accomplishments of writers most active from the
’20s through the ’50s,” he says. “Time is the arbiter. Time determines what is classic, what lasts. Many songsthat are hits today won’t last. Time does clarify the essence of everything.”
Inarguable, yet a bit of a mystical approach; Feinstein, though, is quite direct in embracing a song.Watching him onstage is to see the missionary of music at work: He loves spreading the word.
Sure, he sings old songs, but this is not an oldies concert. Instead, it’s a celebration of music for peoplewho appreciate the romance in a lyric.

The Temptations 1964 classic hit “My Girl” was written by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White of The Miracles. Robinson wrote the lyrics, which he later said were inspired by his wife, Claudette. They divorced in 1986.
Roy Orbison’s highest charting album did not come about until after his untimely death in 1989. “Mystery Girl” reached #5 and was eventually certified platinum.
From 1969 to 1970, Jimmy Buffett was a staff writer for Billboard magazine in Nashville.

Jonas Brothers aren’t bothered about Bieber The Jonas Brothers aren’t afraid of Justin Bieber’s success. The pop trio – siblings Joe, Kevin and Nick Jonas - aren’t worried their fans might start sup-porting the ‘Baby’ hitmaker instead of them. Kevin said: “I think there is room for every-body. We’re not afraid of anything or worried about anything. We’re just being who we are and making music that we love. We’re proud of the guys that are following their dreams. As long
as they’re doing it for the right rea-sons, we’ll totally support them.” The brothers have always had a lot of female fans, and their girl admirers were seemingly relieved earlier this year to learn that Joe, 21, had split from his singer-and-actress girlfriend Demi Lovato.
Adam Levine finished with model songs Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine wants to stop singing about women. The ‘Misery’ singer admits it is “abso-lutely ridiculous” how many models are featured in the band’s songs, vid-eos and album covers, and is planning
for the group to take a new direction. Speaking of the situation, Adam said: “I need to find something else to harp on about, you know? I am aware of that. I don’t think anyone on planet Earth wants to see me kissing another girl. It is absolutely ridiculous at this point. We’re ready to change that.”
Jay-Z nearly leaked himself Jay-Z almost accidentally leaked his ‘The Blueprint 3’ album on the internet himself. The US rapper - who released the album, his most recent, last Septem-ber - admitted he worried the album could leak at any moment for months after accidentally leaving an iPod containing all the tracks on a plane. He told Forbes.com: “The day I flew in from Hawaii, where ‘The Blueprint 3’ was largely recorded, I was doing some recording, and I had an iPod in my pocket on a commercial flight from Hawaii to New York. I had on jogging pants, and the iPod, with all the music I had recorded, went miss-ing - it was on the plane somewhere. So every day I would wake up and check all the internet places, for like
three months.” Luckily Jay’s album was never leaked - however fellow hip-hop star Dr. Dre has not been so lucky, and the long awaited release of his forthcoming ‘Detox’ album has been beset by tracks leaked on the internet. In re-sponse, Dre has now said he is revis-ing the album and it will not feature any tracks which have already leaked on the internet.

If there was ever a World Series of zombie killing, I’d have to imagine that it’d be a lot likethe 2006 Capcom blockbuster “Dead Rising.” And if they were to hand out MVP honors toone overachieving ghoul destroyer, they would definitely go to the game’s protagonist, photojournalist Frank West. Well, that was four years ago, and a new heavy hitter has steppedup to the plate looking to steal the title of creative zombie bashing while saving his daughterin the process. The man is Chuck Greene, and the name of the game is “Dead Rising 2.”
Motocross champion Chuck isn’t the luckiest man on the zombie-infested planet. Sadly, hiswife has been killed, and his 7-year-old daughter, Katey, has been infected. In order topurchase the medicine that will stop Katey from turning into an undead little kid, Chuckmust now compete in a game show that awards money for surviving zombie-filled arenas. Ifhe fails, he loses the only family he has left.
“Dead Rising 2” plays much like the original, placing you in the role of our hero as youslash, slap, crush, shoot and burn every zombie you see. This third-person actioner has beengiven quite a few upgrades, not only in the weapons of undead destruction but with thegeneral gameplay and story. In the past, you would find a baseball bat and bash as many ofthe shambling horde as you could. Now, thanks to the inclusion of Combo Weapons, you cantake two items and a roll of duct tape and create an off-the-wall zombie-slaying device. Thiscan be anything from the simplistic Electric Rake to the more bizarre Drill Bucket.

I promise you darling, you will not remember the name of the great cigar your buddy gave you at the bar. Even if you just save the cigar band you’ll do yourself a great service the next time you want to smoke that same cigar. Keep track, you’ll be glad you did.

Ed Westwick’s improving fashion sense
Ed Westwick thinks his fashion sense has improved since star-ring in ‘Gossip Girl’. The British actor - who plays Chuck Bass in the teen drama, admitted he has had to “step up his game” after learning about different looks and styles from various designers and industry experts. He said: “My fashion con-sciousness and self conscious-ness have definitely grown over the course of being on the show. All the exposure and all the experi-ence I’ve had of different sides of the industry means I have a better knack of how to put things together. We’ve all been to fashion shows, we’ve worked with designers in different ca-pacities, on fashion shoots. You learn
about different looks and colours. I’ve definitely stepped up my game.” The hunky star explained his favorite look out of the recent shoots he has done would be an English country gentleman style that made him look as though he was “going shooting with Prince Charles”.

Colorful Milan Fashion Week
Vibrant colors have already proved a key trend at Milan Fashion Week. With Gucci kicking off proceed-ings, the iconic Italian brand showcased its vibrant spring/summer 2011 collection based upon “grown up glamour”. Prada followed this trend in its runway show, with a whole host of bright and jewelled colors being a key feature of the col-lection, which also included a playful, banana print and bold stripes. Elsewhere, Dolce and Gabbana proved the floral trend is set to make a re-emergence next summer, with a number of feminine floral pieces featured. However, it’s not just bright colors that will be popular in the spring/summer 2011 collection - Al-berta Ferretti and Luisa Beccaria both
opted for romantic, ethereal-looking pieces, with pretty lace dresses and sheer chiffon tops. Additionally, the Fendi brand show-cased a completely different style from the other collections previewed at Milan Fashion Week, opting for a more ‘70s feel.

Give Us The Shirt Off Your Back…
Let’s not pretend that dressing Jaime King as a richclotheshorse is anything but a designer’s dream job.
At 5 feet 9 inches and with a killer figure, the model andactress on ABC’s “My Generation,” airing Thursdays, is aknockout.
Kicking off 5-inch Stuart Weitzman heels, King says, “It’sinteresting because there are so many ideal body types now. It’sreally unfortunate that so many women struggle when they arenot a size zero. I love when women just love themselves.”
Her character, Jackie, is not that enlightened. “MyGeneration” chronicles nine alumni of the class of 2000 adecade later. Jackie, a failed actress, returns home to Austin,Texas, and marries a wealthy guy.
“Jackie’s look is very prim, very conservative,” King says.“She wouldn’t wear a zip-up black mini like I’m rocking rightnow.”
While King describes her style as “Grace Kelly meets street,”she says Jackie “wants to dress for her husband, for her father.”
King, as Jackie, is a dream to dress, says Kathleen Kiatta, costume designer.
“I can shop for her, and if we haven’t discussed it or had afitting, I can look at three dresses and know she will work it,”Kiatta says.
“Jackie is a bit of a chameleon now and has a bit of an L.A.background, and married to money now, and can get whatevershe wants as far as clothing,” Kiatta says. “That gives us a lot offreedom. That she can buy what she wants gives us free range.”
